Witch's Winter Holiday

I think Beak might have run out of AoO's due to using Bodyguard against the prior attacks, but it doesn't make a difference right now because all it took was Beak's first AoO and Kramac's first AoO. XD

Beak and Kramac knock the swinging madman from his vine and send his blood-spattered remains careening to the floor below. Flyn moves in and snipes the warrior with Kramac's blood on his spear, sending him falling to the afterlife as well. Fendel follows suit against the land-bound man and Mvumbu finishes the job while Kiboko stands by her side and watches. With only one opponent left, Zaarah flies forward and plies her hex once more...

Dashed Green Will vs DC 22: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

...but somehow the man fights off the fog that threatens to swallow up his thoughts and stays conscious. The deep cut and bite from the half-orc and his bird makes sure he stays awake. The lone man's voice echoes from the rocky walls of the room, still painfully loud to Fendel's enhanced senses as he jabs at the mounted Kramac...

Witch's Winter Holiday

The gorilla does not respond to Kiboko's magical hooting, but you see her arms begin to tense in preparation of movement.

Kramac, Beak, and Zaarah round the corner to see an ape the size of the one they fought in the Maze, though below its heavy armor this one looks like a desiccated corpse with glowing red eyes. Above it, carved into the wall, rises a statue of Angazhan that reaches from the rocky floor to the vine-choked ceiling. At the demon lord's feet stands a candle-laden altar, upon which a humanoid woman lies bound. Two massive murals flank the statue, painted with what looks like mud, blood, and more unmentionable substances. The northern one depicts a giant red ape standing atop a mound of corpses that resemble dozens of deities within the Golarian pantheon, while the second shows several human-like apes emerging from a river of blood and driving throngs of enslaved humanoids before them.

The vilest of souls wishing to extend their lives turn to the necromantic arts in search of immortality. Most perish or lose their minds in the process - but a few separate themselves from their life-force and seal it away in specially-made containers known as phylactery. What remains is a lich - possessing all the skills and abilities it wielded in life, as well as a touch that paralyzes those unfortunate mortals to draw the creature's wrath.

Knowledge (religion), Inspiration: 1d20 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (19) + 6 + (5) = 30

The vilest of souls wishing to extend their lives turn to the necromantic arts in search of immortality. Most perish or lose their minds in the process - but a few separate themselves from their life-force and seal it away in specially-made containers known as phylactery. What remains is a lich - possessing all the skills and abilities it wielded in life, as well as a touch that paralyzes those unfortunate mortals to draw the creature's wrath. Dark power permeates their leathery skin and protects them from harm, though weapons blessed by the power of heaven can pierce through this warding - or even with a basic magical enhancement.

Undead creature with a touch attack that deals negative energy damage and can cause permanent paralysis (Fortitude negates). DR/good or magic.

@Fendel - I don't think you can see the lich from your current position unless you've got some sort of periscope. Did you have the movement to travel one space further forward?

The lich laughs at Kramac's boast. The harsh, screeching sound is followed by a flurry of jabs from the tree-sized spear and a swing of one massive fist at the minuscule Zaarah as if swatting away a fly.

With the lich's demise, the runic barrier dissipates like a bad dream. The sudden lack of shouting and other noises makes the silence deafening - broken by the sound of soft moaning from the altar.

Upon closer inspection, it is clear that something is terribly wrong with the bound woman. She looks similar to the lady in the portrait the Seekers used to travel to the Mwangi Expanse, but her brow is noticeably enlarged, her arms are half-again as long as normal, and a thin coat of fine blonde hair covers her chest and arms beneath her once-fine dress. Two rings still adorn her fingers: one of simple gold and the other of polished silver bearing the familiar sigil of the Glyph of the Open Road. At her waist hangs a wayfinder, with the tip of a clear ioun stone peaking out from its slot. A eviscerated corpse of what appears to be a shaven baboon lies at the foot of the altar, drained of all bodily fluids. Surrounding the woman are the melted remains of four candles - red, green, yellow, and black; one for each corner of the stone slab.

"You are certain, Zaarah? We must hope her mind is intact, else we likely face a further battle."

"Kyalla." Kiboko calls to the woman. "Kyalla. Is it you? Can you speak?"

Kiboko still has a few rounds of Speak With Animals otherwise :o

"No, Zaarah's quite right. Whatever transmutation has befallen her is beyond established arcane theory and practice. Still, there may yet be hope. We need to return with her as soon as possible in the off chance something can be done."

The detective scans the room for any other details.

Flyn nods to both Zaarah and Fendel. ”I doubt neither of you as you know far more than I in arcane matters…but I advise you not to state that when we return her to the Grand Lodge. I can just hear Aram Zey now,” the Elf pauses, gathering himself before continuing in his best mock-Zey voice. ”Flyndyngylyn, you ignorant scoundrel, speak not of such things you know nothing about; it amazes me yet that you walk upright on two feet, much less express a knowledgeable notion concerning the arcane…keep silent and let your betters discuss it amongst ourselves…”

He sighs, muttering, ”Master Zey’s quite fond of me, you know…”

After they search this chamber, Flyn will gather the arrows he fired in the previous chamber and then search there…and any other chambers they might’ve missed…

@GM: Did I need to cast my dispel Magic?

Nope, Flyn finished the lich off before anyone else could act. XD

As Fendel and Flyn examine the murals and the lich's oversized spear, Kiboko turns his attention to the bound woman on the altar. As expected, her wayfinder and the clear spindle ioun stone held within it radiate a pair of intertwined magical auras. The signet ring also registers as faintly magical, much in the same way as the ring in Eddington Keel's bedroom had resonated with the portrait-portal it activated. The woman herself shies away from the half-orc.

Kiboko:
Through the lingering effects of Kiboko's mystical connection with animals, he understands her soft hooting and whimpering. Most of what she says is gibberish even still, but a few words come through now and again.

Nononononono... New body... Want Eddington... No more hurting...

Eventually she begins to repeat herself, the phrases "Nononononono" and "Want Eddington" being the most frequent.

What do you do?

"Little of Kyalla remains - but she is not entirely gone." Kiboko tells his fellows.

speak with animals:
With the last of the scroll's magic, Kiboko tells Kyalla: "We will take you to Eddington, and keep you safe from harm. There is a long journey ahead. You must trust us now - we are Pathfinders."

"Kiboko should learn that spell when we return. Kyalla is distressed and wants Eddington Keel. Kiboko has told her that we will take her to Keel. We must return to Woodsedge. But first, we must discover the whereabouts of Adril Hestram."

Kiboko focuses on soothing Kyalla's distress.

If appropriate, Kiboko can use Handle Animal or Wild Empathy should Kyalla be that far gone.

Flyn nods at Kiboko. ”Aye, my friend…but I fear that traitorous bastard Hestram is staying a step ahead of us. I recall a passage we left unexplored in the previous chamber…perhaps we’ll find a clue there. I wonder who is next target might be?”

He’ll head back and gather his arrows and then warily check the passage to the south…

Zaarah yawns.

”I have to admit that this is becoming a little bit annoying and frustrating! I mean I really have no issue with solving all these puzzles but can we just get to the conclusion?! I mean where is this guy Hestram so that I can finally kill him!“ she says with a stern look on her face.

”And what do we do with this woman? I mean look at her! She’s an animal! Like, wouldn’t it be better to just release her from this misery?! I mean she can’t be turn to a human being anyway anymore!“

"You think animals deserve death, Zaarah?" Kiboko growls.

"Kyalla still calls for her love, still recognises his name. And even were she to regress farther, animals are better and purer than humanoids infected with the corruption of civilisation. Does living in a city make you better than an ape, a bird - a hippo? Does making words, sleeping in a bed, or holding a sword, make you better?

Kiboko's existence in the Expanse with Mvumbu is a greater, purer joy than anything offered in Absalom. You would do well to release yourself from corruption, Zaarah. Your mind is clouded."

Zaarah frowns.

"Well Kiboko, you might be right. My mind is clouded! But if I knew the freedom of thought that I know today and even had such strong, differentiated emotions like love ..." and she has to stop speaking as Kiboko's words moved something inside of her, "... then I would rather die than look like this and never be able to get back what I had!"
