As Rhu lights the lantern, he can hear the sound of a latch clicking open.
Another thing that the party notices about the light from the lantern is that while it provides light just like a normal lantern, the flame seems to bend and shift strangely. It just happens to cast it's light and shadows in such a way as to illuminate the edges of the door frames.
One function of this lantern is that it provides a +2 competence bonus on Perception checks to discover hidden doors.
Behind the door is a narrow staircase leading down.

"Right. Lets go." Hskoro heads down the stairs.
Grax, Son of Dray

Grax follows Hskoro down the stairs, but not before he pulls out a mutagen Javon has brewed for him. He drinks it and instantly, his muscles are more sharply defined and his eyes have a dull, flat look to them. He draws his greatsword and heads down.

A winding downward staircase empties into the center of a chamber with four circular alcoves. Each of these alcoves glows with a different colored translucent barrier: red, green, blue, and white. With the exception of the alcove behind the white barrier, a variety of items are on display beyond the barriers. Among these curiosities are books, scrolls, figurines, urns, and tapestries. The alcove behind the white barrier, however, is mostly blocked by rubble, as if it had been ransacked in the past. Four gemstones sparkle atop a stone altar along one of the chamber’s walls.
Below the barriers there are words written in one of the elemental languages next to a round slot where one of the gemstones can be fitted. Each of the stones has an obvious elemental connection: the garnet contains a small flame; the opal contains a miniature cyclone; the pearl is filled with sloshing water; and the diamond has several visible gray rocks inside of it.
Its a puzzle! Does anyone know any of the elemental languages or have access to comprehend languages?
Rhu Entekh
|
At the sound of the latch, Rhu pauses and frowns slightly, then shakes his head and follows the party through the opened door. He looks around the chamber. "If one of us copies the writing, perhaps the azata can translate for us again."
GM Badblood
|
The words “wet the sky” are written below the white barrier in Auran.
The words “fan the flame” are written below the red barrier in Ignan.
The words “spark the earth” are written below the green barrier in Terran.
The words “fill in the sea” are written below the purple barrier in Aquan.
The only one the party needs to get into is the air room.
Placing the pearl into to the slot on the altar causes the white barrier to go down and opens the way into a small alcove. In this small room is a table loaded down with a pile of books. There is also a long wooden trunk that has had the lid smashed open. Inside is a chain shirt with a blue and gray tabard and an elixir in a skinny pink bottle.
The party can make a Perception or Knowledge (Planes) check when they search through these books.

Therin identifies the armor as a +1 chainshirt of cloudburst and the bottle as an elixir of forceful exhalation. Rhu sees that there is a design of a cloud with a lightning bolt on the front of the tabard.
Looking around the room Therin quickly finds a book that has the sigil of Ranginori on the cover. As he flips through the book he sees that it is written entirely in Auran. He feels the magic from the scroll wearing off and realizes that he needs to find whatever he is looking for within the next couple of minutes.
Therin can attempt a Knowledge (planes) or Perception check. Other party members can also make attempts if they are capable of speaking Auran.
Javon
|
After the items are removed from the alcove, Javon picks up one of the remaining gems and places it to the corresponding alcove niche.
We'll do fire, then earth, then water if it matters. He'll stop if there's anything that happens other than the barrier coming down.
GM Badblood
|
Javon checks out the other alcoves but only finds piles of books, mostly in elemental languages.
Therin tries to puzzle his way through the Codex of Fundamental Dominion but has trouble finding anything that references the Untouchable Opal. As the magic of the [i]comprehend languages spell fades, several voices can be heard coming from the stairs.
Four dark-skinned humanoids dressed in chain shirts and brightly colored tabards descend the stairs. They are tall, muscular and have heavy looking saps in their hands. One of them shouts out to the party, "You are wanted for questioning regarding the murders of Z'eliak and Marskaduk Fandellopi. Please come with us peacefully or we will be obligated to bring you in by force!"

He raises his sword in a guard position, but still not actually threatening them with it.

The guards shout back at Therin, "We serve Sultan Zafer XXXVIII, the divine and munificent ruler of Armun Kelisk. There are witnesses who have reported that you people were involved in an altercation with some visitors from the Plane of Fire. You will submit to questioning now!"
When Grax questions their appearance, the guard that he addresses stammers helplessly, as if unsure of what to say. Then one of the other guards screams, "Silence! You are the ones to be questioned, not us! Come with us now for your last chance to receive any mercy, If you delay us any longer I will see to it that you receive the maximum punishment possible for your crimes!"

The suli in red glances at Rhu, then shouts something to his allies in Auran. He hops off the steps and draws a multi-colored vial of liquid from his belt as he moves forward. When he moves, his form turns into a vague blur but then returns back to normal as he stops to lob the vial at Grax. The vial shatters all over him, drenching him in burning liquid. Some of the liquid also gets on Javon and Therin who is standing nearby. A little also strikes Rhu, but harmlessly slides off his fiendish flesh.

As he moves, he also draws a similar vial and tosses it as Hskoro. Having witnessed what it did to Grax, the fighter nimbly jumps over the vial and it crashes on the ground. This time arcing electricity leaps from the vial. Even though he dodged the majority of it, one small electric arc manages to strike his calf.

The green garbed suli ducks under Hskoro's axe as he moves into position to throw his vial. Therin leaps forward and strikes the guard in the chest with his morningstar, but the man's chainshirt absorbs the impact of the blow. The guard in red is not quite so lucky as one of Rhu's arrows hits him in the hip.
The guard in fuschia rushes down the stairs and past Hskoro, who is recovering from his swing at the other suli. This one has also taken a bottle out of his pouch and tosses it at Grax again. The unfortunate fighter takes another direct hit, this time finding himself severely shocked, with other arcs of electricity striking out at his nearby allies.

Hskoro, stairs are generally difficult terrain going up. This matters more for the enemies actually, especially since Hskoro doesn't have multiple attacks and wasn't being threatened by any foes.
Hskoro walks up the stairs and strikes at the suli in blue, slashing them with his axe.
Javon flies out of the splash radius of the guards' bombs while Grax tries to decapitate the closest enemy to him. The suli steps to the side and the blade flies past his head.
Smiling, the guard in red clicks his fingers and his arms begin to drip with acid. He steps forward and swings his sap at Rhu. The sap strikes him in the side of the face, causing his head to swim from the pain.

The one in green sprays a blast of slippery liquid all over the ground. Hskoro suddenly finds himself sliding on steps, struggling to stay on his feet.
Taking the opportunity the one in blue hops off the steps and runs behind red. He reaches out and heals his ally.

Just realizing that all these suli guards are female. I didn't think they specified the gender for these enemies.
Therin's blows continue glancing off the guard's chain mail, while Rhu's attempts to shoot a different guard go astray. One arrow slides off the suli's armor and the other flies right by her.
Chain links fall to the ground as Hskoro catches the guard in blue with a backhanded axe swing. If it wasn't for the chain coif hanging from the guard's helmet, they may have been decapitated by the blow but they manage to get away with a mere injury.
Missed the confirmation, although not by much. They're going to direct that healing spell on themselves rather than red due to the attack of opportunity hitting.
The warrior in pink repositions themselves to strike at Grax. With a flick of her wrist, acid begins to pour down their arms and off the sap in her hands. The suli moves in and strikes at the fighter. The sap strikes him hard in the side of the neck, causing him to gasp in pain.
