"She's good," Talia answers over her shoulder. "She'll climb that hillside like a king mountain goat."

The party hoists themselves laboriously up the cliff face hike over the course of nearly an hour. Using trees and rock outcroppings as hand and footholds, the party shows surprising facility at climbing despite none of them having any real training in it. Portia especially has an easy time of it, as her hands and feet stick with no problem to any surface that she touches them to.

when the party reaches the top, they find a massive nest built into the cliffs. Within the nest are hard-shelled yellow eggs approximately the size of a human. Guarding the nest are the two owlbears that fled from the beginning of the last attack and one more owlbear -- though this third owlbear is awe-inspiringly massive.

The creature screeches a shriek of motherly rage and defiance before hefting two monstrous boulders into the air. With each paw that could lay a man flat in a single swipe, it sends the boulders down the mountain face towards Pavo and Wulfgar, who stand in approximately the front of the group. One of the boulders smashes into pieces striking Wulfgar with a painful crunch, but Pavo is able to avoid the other part of this opening salvo.

1. Giant Owlbear
2. Tanu
3. Blue Owlbear
4. Talia, Pavo
5. Red Owlbear
6. Portia, Wulfgar

Because of climbing, everyone's hands (except Tanu, whose horse climbed for him) are currently empty, and Wulfgar is wearing no armor. 10 minutes remain on the duration of spider climb. After the giant owlbear, Tanu is up next.

To move on this map, a DC 10 Climb check is required, and all terrain is difficult terrain for the party members, but not for the owlbears.

Tanu's eyes widen in alarm as the giant owlbear makes its opening salvo. "To arms, everyone, quickly! Just a bigger version of what we've already done. Let's do it again!" He raises his flag high, and fixes his intense gaze on the owlbears. He quickly takes in the terrain and the distance to the owlbears, frowning slightly. "Anybody have anything to stop that beast from lobbing boulders at us? It would be best to let them come to us if we can, this terrain doesn't look pleasant."

Move action to start up Inspiring Command, Standard action to use Tactician to grant Harrying Partners to all allies within 30 ft for 5 rounds. As per usual, if any adjacent allies get melee attacked (sucks it doesn't work for ranged too...), I'll use an AoO to aid their AC for +5 for the round. For future reference, do banner and inspiring command bonuses apply to aid rolls, since they are attack rolls? And if I have at least a +9 bonus, meaning even with a 1 I still beat the 10 AC for an aid attack, do I still need to roll? Or is a 1 an auto-loss even if my bonus is high enough to beat the AC?

Aid rolls if needed:

Aid 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Aid 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Aid 3: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Forgive my lack of verisimilitude, but a creature with an intelligence of a dog is picking up rocks and throwing them at us?

OK, a smarter than average owlbear. I'll stop whining now. So move action @ half speed and requires a climb check. Is there cover nearby to avoid the thrown rocks?

A 1 is automatically a miss, regardless of what your bonuses are.

As Tanu begins his inspiring oration and presence once again, one of the owlbears starts to barrel down the mountain towards the group. Though it is too far for the creature to begin snapping and attacking, it approaches directly into combat with Wulfgar and Pavo.

Talia and Pavo are up.

'I think this seems like the best tactic, considering how big the Mama Bird-Brain is. I hope it works.' Portia Porphyria-Jeggare reaches into her enchanted Haversack, nodding thanks at Talia for the Spider Climb, and pulls out her Scroll of Silent Image.

Casting the spell from behind her allies, imagines a frighteningly-massive, beak-foaming, blazing-eyed Figment of a GHOST-Condor, silently and hungrily creeping up to the egg-filled nest, maybe 25-30' behind the nest.

I cast a Silent Image of a spectral, ghostly predator -- a really giant one, trying to sneak up behind the giant Owlbear to steal its eggs. It looks like a Ghost, hopefully the Owlbear will, at least on some level, recognize why it has no scent or sound. But more importantly, some kind of Varisian Condor, a natural predator, will trigger a natural reaction from 'Mama' -- as long as I concentrate, and keep the Silent Image in 'Long Range,' I can manipulate it to retreat and advance, retreat and advance. At least until our front-liners deal with the smaller ones. ....If it's possible, can you provide a Miniature for my Silent Image-raptor about 20 or 30 feet behind the nest? Summon Monster is a 1-round cast time, and will be finished as a standard action on Wulfgar's next turn. Also, summoned creatures attack enemies to the best of their abilities unless otherwise directed, and can only be directed as the caster is already able to do -- Wulfgar will need speak with animals to give commands to animals in general.

That's cool, I initially thought that it wouldn't be able to act until the next round but I read. "It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn." in the PFSRD so I wasn't sure. That will be it's action in the next round. Sorry about the confusion I don't play a lot of casters. Talia nocks an arrow to her bow and lets it fly towards the beast up on the rise. The arrow makes its mark -- hard to miss a target twenty feet high -- but simply becomes buried in the owlbear's mass of feathers and thick skin. After a moment's rustling, the arrow falls out.

Meanwhile, Wulfgar begins to cast a spell. Praying to Gorum for aid, he uses the powers of conjuration. Nearby, the outline of a huge bat begins to take shape...

Wulfgar still appears to be on flat ground, so he didn't need to take a move action to move 5 feet. His spell will conclude at the beginning of his next turn.

Portia figures that it's time for some artillery. With her allies' ranged prowess leaving something to be desired, the huge creature was about to descend on her allies at full strength. As soon as they get close enough, Tanu lifts forward and sends his lance singing in toward the very large side of the creature, then out and back again in a quick double strike.

Reaching into his pouch again Wulfgar mumbles a prayer. "dukhovnoye oruzhiye" Out of thin air a greatsword appears beside the large owlbear and begins chopping at the creature.

I'll edit the map again later to add the sword and bat.

As Pavo and Tanu stand menacingly and swing their weapons -- to no avail, of course, for the owlbear stands tantalizingly out of reach -- Wulfgar and Portia employ magic to strike at the massive creature from range. A sword and bat appear from nowhere, the sword managing to bite into owlbear flesh, while viperlike missiles collide with the creature's chest.

Shrieking, it lashes out with long clawed limbs and a great lunge with its teeth. Its claws bite deep through Pavo's armor, even with Tanu's protection. Tanu's armor and defensive posture save him for a moment from the other claw, but soon the owlbear bites deeply and near-fatally.

It's been more than a day, so we're moving on.

In the face of a cliff that he's not trained to climb guarded by a massive beast, Pavo decides to take the long way around. Talia's performance is for naught if nobody could get over to the other side of the creature, but he also doesn't want to be attacked. Pavo runs north, stopping just inside the creature's reach.

Red Owlbear Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

The remaining owlbear starts to meander -- blindly -- towards the group and the sounds of his mother's roaring, but still cannot scrape the glitter from his eyes.

Talia, Tanu, Portia, and Wulfgar are up.

Tanu gives a muted shout of pain as the cursedly huge owlbear finds a way past his armor and sinks deep into skin beneath. The bottom beak just barely catches on his armor, luckily, or it would have been much worse; the upper beak still comes away dark red with Tanu's blood. Curses that hurt! Got to be more careful.

He spares a thankful glance at Wulfgar as his healing magic takes hold. "Thanks, comrade! Bloody beast hurts when it bites!"

Tanu's lance then dips back toward the owlbear in another quick double jab. He is being noticeably more careful with his motions.

Hearing the Vudrani's voice break a little as he remarked how badly the Owlbear bit him, and not knowing enough of healing skills to determine how badly her allies are faring against the creature -- especially with the third smaller one approaching and getting that much closer to the end of a blinding spell duration -- Portia Porphyria-Jeggare unleashes her most powerful spell. It's about all she has left, but it will easily get both Mama and the smaller one. The question is whether she can aim it to get both of them without getting her allies OR the valuable Owlbear eggs.

(Putting the Fireball around the red Owlbear (There're a few intersections that work.) I can get the large Owlbear, the red Owlbear, none of the PCs, and none of the eggs.)

Continuing her oration, a classic Brevic ode to bravery and strength in battle, Talia pauses between stanzas to summon another wizard's flashbang, multicolored lights springing into their reality between the two owlbears, coating both with more firecracker dust and - hopefully - blinding the mother owlbear.

Casting another glitterdust. Not sure if a currently blinded creature like the baby owlbear needs to save vs. blindness, but Talia can target them both just in case. Save DC is 17 with a boost to Cha from Talia's performance.

Tanu's second attack is at -5, so it's a 16.

Giant Owlbear Reflex (18): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Red Owlbear Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Red Owlbear Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Wulfgar and Tanu's attacks are ineffective against the giant creature, whether because of the giant owlbear's thick hide or because the owlbear is able to wrestle the weapons arrayed against it away from any position of lethality.

Talia and Portia unleash powerful spells against the owlbears, but the creatures seem unnaturally resilient -- at least while defending their home. The burns they suffer are not lethal, and both are able to resist the glitterdust spell.

The mother owlbear, in response to the mages' attacks, steps closer -- close enough to strike at the back line. Using its extended reach, it strikes first at Portia, then at Talia, then finally at Tanu once again with its beak. With its size and strength, all three of its strikes easily meet their mark, cleaving flesh and leaving impressive, deadly wounds.

The giant owlbear savagely takes advantage of an opportunity to strike Pavo as the Hellknight approaches it. Then Pavo chops savagely into the creature's side, eliciting a howl. The owlbear is starting to slow down now, but it looks like a great deal more must still be done to slay it.

The other, younger owlbear, badly wounded though it is, continues to meander closer to the group. It does not know that Talia's spell will soon expire, but it continues to struggle with the glitter blinding it.

Talia, Tanu, Wulfgar, and Portia are up.

Portia Porphyria-Jeggare sees Wulfgar hold aloft his holy symbol and realizes he's channeling divine energy from his god; involuntarily she winces as the positive energy radiates through her and she closes her eyes hoping Asmodeus isn't watching her if her eyes are closed. But healed, claw lacerations no longer bleeding, she opens up her eyes and nods appreciatively to the Cleric of Gorum.

She's down to her minor cantrips, yet is ready to continue the fight. Backing up another step she conjures a small burst of acidic energy and unleashes it at the huge Owlbear.
