Yigrig Moneymaker, the powerful goblin merchant, slumps in a large chair. His face, normally so proud and assured, looks troubled. “It’s good to see you, Pathfinders! I have a lot of respect for the Society. You’ve been good to me in the past, and my family has aided you in return. But today I come before you, my hat in my hands, in need of help. “My family and I have almost brokered a trade agreement between the cities of Solku and Oenopion. It’s a beneficial deal, one where Solku gains the materials it needs to defend itself, Oenopion gains a new trading partner, and everyone stands to make a heap of coin. There’s only one issue standing in the way of the negotiation being finalized: a bridge must be constructed over the Elemion River to facilitate safe travel between the two cities. My family is responsible for building and maintaining this bridge. It should have been a simple
job… easy to pull off."
“It has been anything but easy.”
The old goblin leans forward. “Every morning at the work camp, it is discovered that more of my children have been pulled from their beds in the night, presumed dead. Every shipment of aid I send gets attacked. The last one I sent did not even arrive.
“There is a lot of money riding on this deal, but I admit this isn’t about money anymore. This is personal. Someone is harming my family and I can’t sit by and let that happen.
“I have contracted the Pathfinder Society to protect the bridge and surrounding work camp while construction is completed. I have a caravan ready to leave, filled with new workers and supplies for the bridge site. I want you on it. When you see it safely to the bridge site, I need you to stop the attacks on the camp by any means necessary until the job is complete. When you get to the work camp, you will meet my son Zig, the overseer of the project. Sweet kid… takes after his old man. He’ll be your liaison with the workers and see to your needs.
“Nothing is more important than family. Nothing. And so, I’m
asking you to take care of mine. Our future is in your hands.”
Manuk Gagak

Manuk stood in her customary position – at the back of the group and slightly to the side. Her leather armour was not visible, given she wore a dark robe – albeit with the hood down, revealing her short dark hair.
She listened intently to the goblin merchant, many questions buzzing around her head. But she held her counsel, wanting to see if others would ask them and therefore allow her to remain as inconspicuous as possible. It was not an act of shyness, but rather she preferred anonymity as it often worked in her favour. The figure in black that you can’t really remember – let alone describer her face. And as for a name? No chance of recollection.
On the face of it, a routine assignment – but Manuk head learned already these were often the most challenging. And as the story unfolded, she realised her initial assumption was correct. Abductions and robbery. But to what end?
But for now, she stood silently, allowing others to hopefully ask the burning questions she had. In terms of helping, there was never a question on that score. She was already committed to being on the caravan.
Ingmar Cloudseeker
|
Ingmar was looking around somewhat awkwardly. The brawny dwarf hated these social situations; too often had he managed to just somehow find the wrong words and someone always seemed to end up offended.
Guarding a caravan and a work camp against attackers was obviously easy enough work. His trusty pick had already helped him fell an undead giant once; whatever would come against the party this time would surely meet a similar fate! And if it helped the Society, so much the better.
He sized up the goblin in front of him: clearly the old fellow was in need of some exercise. In fact, he looked like he could barely even lift a dagger! No wonder he needed to hire help to protect his own. But at least his heart was in the right place if he put his clan ahead of his money. That was a sentiment Ingmar could fully understand - nothing should ever be allowed to sully your clan's name!
"You were right to come to the Pathfinders for help, Yigrig of the Moneymakers! We will guard your workers, strike down the enemies of your people and help you recover what is left of your clan's honor!" he said, trying to give the goblin his most reassuring smile.

Manny was busy reading a small book, while his squirrel-looking familiar turned the pages. At first it seemed as though he hadn't heard a word of what was discussed. However, without looking up from the treatise, he says softly. "Good, Sir Moneymaker... Might I inquire if you have any suspects of note? Anyone you can think of who might gain from either the kidnapping of your family, embarrassing you our your clan, or would particularly find loss in such an agreement between the cities of Solku and Oenopion? I only ask this, as such blatant targeting of your family, suggests increased likelihood that you, or your kin, have had contact with the perpetrator..." Manny closes the book he is currently reading, and his familiar proceeds to slip it into his bag while Manny turns to look directly at the Goblin, his golden scales brilliantly reflecting the light of the room as he fixes Yigrig with a direct stare. "I also must attest to the possibility your own son may be deceiving you. After-all, as you state, your family are "being pulled from their beds." This suggests no body, no blood, no sign of extreme violence. The simple fact no-one is noticing the disappearances suggests either magic is involved, or those who are taken trust the perpetrators involved... As such, I must press you the difficult question of: 'How much do you truly trust Zig?' And please, for the sake of brevity, be honest. Also, know I mean no insult. Just stating the facts."
Ylen Vartok
|
Ylen stood in the center of the group. Ygrid Moneymaker didnt look like someone who'd ask for help unless the threat was real. He sighed. This was not going to be an easy assigment.
"The assignement is clear. As Manny said, any clues on who, or what, might be behind theses attacks would be useful. Did the attackers leave anything behind that could help us identify them ?"
| DoubleGold |
He looks at you all for a minute Yes, I trust Zig very much, assuming Zig is motivated.
I somewhat know what to expect. Since the attacks began, information has been spotty getting out. However, I know that some sort of large animals have been attacking the work camp during the night, and something else has been aggressive toward anyone that tries to leave or enter the site, no matter what time of day. Bandits? Animals? Accounts have been conflicting, but whatever they are, they’re dangerous. I couldn't tell you about other dangers.
Other things you need to know, well, I have already tried to help as much as I can, and what I’ve done has proven insufficient; that’s why I need you. If you can’t protect the bridge, then the only option left is to close the site and abandon negotiation on the trade agreement before any more goblins in the camp die or go missing. Now, if you want to protect the camp, “Zig will give you more information, but so long as you can prevent goblins from being killed or abducted, the bridge can be built on schedule. If the threats to the goblin workers persist, the builders will remain too scared to finish the job. Personally, I can’t blame them for that.
Nature checks. This is a secret check, so post your modifier if you want me to roll it.

Ingmar thinks to himself "Sure, bandits exist everywhere, but animals? That's weird, a normal animal wouldn't usually attack a camp repeatedly, unless these goblins act like very weak prey and seem like an easy snack. Then again, I've never been here before, I wonder what unusual beasts roam these strange lands?! Have I heard of anything here that would do such a thing?"

Having gotten his confirmation that Yigrig trusts Zig. Manny turns away again, motioning for his familiar to pull out his notebook. He takes careful notes about the information Yigrig gives, leaving large swathes of paper empty between lines. Far too incomplete information... Until I know more this is all likely quite useless... However, what animal is likely to attack in such a manner, and why?

Manuk listened and digested. One things she’d learned as she received her training was that you had one mouth and two ears for a very good reason. And given knowledge may not necessarily be power, it was at least something to give you an edge. And as others spoke, she mentally ticked off any questions she had for herself.
She was very much an urban girl. Her entire life had been spent in one city or another and so her first formal assignment being in the wilderness was something of a shock to the system. Animals? Bandits? In the city, she was very much at home and felt this gave her the advantage but out in the wild, creatures and even bandits would have the upper hand, so she spent half of the time wondering what she knew that could leverage something to balance out the equation.
She came up with nothing. And for the first time would be relying on others – something she knew would take some getting used to. She cast her eye over the assembled group. The Pathfinders must have chosen them for a reason and so she found herself nodding agreement with what was said and her coalescing thoughts. And finally, she spoke, “So, unless anyone has any more questions, I suggest there is no better time to head off than now. Maybe our presence alone will be enough? If not, I’m sure whatever information Zig has will stand us in good stead.”
Ingmar Cloudseeker

"I find that sitting around in an office never solves any problems. Let's meet this caravan of yours and get going! If there are any beasts looking to give us trouble, they'll find themselves at the sharp end of my pick soon enough!" Ingmar grabs his massively oversized weapon, easily hoists it on his shoulder and heads towards the door.
Let's get this show on the road! I have no more questions, slotted boons and school items (assuming we still do this, since the game started before the newly revised guide was released) are in the character profile.
Manney My-holey-knee

Manny nods and lifts his pack onto his back, "While I do not share my compatriot's enthusiasm. His point is still sound, there is little more to be gained by dithering here. Off to the caravan we should head, keeping our eyes peeled for any number of large predators, such as lions, panthers, dire wolves, etc." He nods a curt farewell to Yigrig, and then follows Ingmar out, his familiar close behind him.
I, too, have nothing more to ask, boons to slot, etc.
Ylen Vartok

Ylen makes a mental checklist, making sure he is fully prepared for the trip.
"Okay, I got everything I need, let's go." He turns towards the goblin "Yigrig, you can count on us to figure out what's going on. We'll make sure your camp is safe." He then leaves following Ingmar and Manny.
Manuk Gagak
|
Manuk follows in turn - her head now contemplating the prospect of fighting all manner of beasts. Unlike people, you can't reason with them and she'd have no chance of smooth-talking her way out of trouble if faced with a dire wolf.
"So long," she says to Yigrig as she leaves before saying to Manny, "You really think we'll face those animals?"
| DoubleGold |
Yigrig turns to Manuk. I'm sure you'll encounter some animals, whether you find them or they find you. I'm confident you can take down those ferocious beasts.
After the PCs finish talking to Yigrig, he leads them to a goblin caravan. The goblin caravan consists of 4 Huge wagons and 20 nervous goblin workers. It also contains a trove supplies including wooden beams and food. The leader of the caravan is a goblin named Muckmuck, who remains terrified of his responsibilities and fearful of what could happen on the ensuing journey. He is very quiet.
Muckmuck laughs to himself. “You longshanks think you can protect us? You can’t save Muckmuck. You’re weak. Face facts. We’re all going to die. “You sit there in the back and talk to the workers. We’re all scared. Doesn’t matter what we do. We’re all going to die. “Tell you truth, I don’t want to go. Yigrig reads too many books. He’s lost his mind. We all think about leaving before he gets us killed. Not help that the minstrel lost hand in teethbrushing accident. Much blood. Can’t play lute anymore.
"Tell you what. You want to help? You be the minstrel. Make fancy music. Make goblins feel less likely to run away. Convince them we’re not all going to die.”
It is time to prove Muckmuck he is wrong and make the goblins believe in you all. Skill checks. Athletics to show them you can climb. Acrobatics to do some amazing tumbling stunts. Deception to impersonate Muckmuck. Performance to sign a good song or tell good jokes. Everyone can do two checks, but everyone must attempt at least one. No check can be tried more than three times.
Ingmar Cloudseeker

"YOU may be weak, but we're not! Noone is going to die on this trip, if I can help it." "Unless of course you don't stop whining, then there might just be one more death..."
Ingmar checks out his other party members and decides that if anyone is going to demonstrate physical prowess, it'll obviously have to be him. And as a proud member of clan Cloudseeker, climbing a nearby cliff should be an easy feat.
Athletics(T) check 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Skillfully using his pick as a climbing aid, from below it appears to the goblins as if he was almost able to actually reach the clouds!
Bolstered by his success and having already bested the most difficult cliff around, he's going to further demonstrate his strength by doing some bench presses using a log and having Muckmuck sit on it for an "extra challenge"
Athletics(T) check 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
"There, I hope that convinces you. Don't ever call me weak again!" grunts Ingmar before getting some well-deserved rest.
Manuk Gagak

Manuk wonders to herself why Muckmuck is even on this journey, given his apparent nerves. Maybe he is braver than he seems, or perhaps he has a sense of duty? Regardless, she decides this is not the time to find this out and decides instead to follow Ingmar’s lead and show that the group are not the pushover he seems to think they are. Unfortunately, Ingmar’s prowess actually intimidates Manuk slightly – as she doesn’t want to undo all of his good work. But she takes a deep breath and begins to tumble around the caravan.
Acrobatics (T) - Check One: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Bolstered by her success, she mimics holding a lute and recites an old ballad she remembers from her past in a voice she hopes sounds a lot like Muckmuck.
Deception (T) - Check Two: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Even to her own ears, it was OK, but you would not believe it was an impression of Muckmuck, so she decides instead to share a slightly lewd limerick in his voice instead.
Deception (T) - Check Two: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Smiling at her success, she says to the goblin. "If you let me borrow the lute, I can knock out a song or two on the way to the bridge if you'd like."
Ylen Vartok

"I'm assuming you've never worked with Pathfinders before Muckmuck, otherwise you would know that we can keep your caravan safe." Ylen takes a look at the goblin workers who seem fascinated by the prowess and performances of Ingmar and Manuk. They seem a bit less scared, but to regain confidence, they need a leader who's not afraid. Maybe a bit of discipline will strengthen their resolves
Moving next to Muckmuck, Ylen yells at the goblin crowd imitating Muckmuck's voice.

Manny waits for the rest of the party to demonstrate their abilities. Taking note of what they are proficient in, and elects to fill the missing components, as is standard for him. Carefully picking a blade of grass and slipping it between his claws just right and blowing into it, he starts to play a wailing, haunting tune.
Performance: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Enjoying how his haunting yet melodic song goes, he starts to dance, showing off his own athletic prowess at the same time as a reminder he is more than he appears.
Athletics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Once finished, he turns to Muckmuck and tilts his head, "You will find that I possess prowess in the vast majority of talent fields. If you are astute, you will remember this and heed my words in times of trouble." He turns to the rest of the party I hope they all remember this as well. He then drops the blade of grass and wipes off his scales carefully and approaches the back of the wagon while addressing Muckmuck once more over his shoulder. "I trust our performance was sufficient to prove we are more than adequate to any challenges we may face." The tone in his voice suggesting it is more a statement than a question.

As you are on the move, you come to this desert site not with pyramids, but with other statue objects like a sphinx and whatnot. And an Oasis. Everyone roll either perception or Stealth, or whatever you use for init. Normally I'd roll it, but I never asked what exploration mode people are using

"What a strange country this is. Is this giant winged man-lion the type of beast we're going to face here? Looks like a truely monumental challenge. Bring it on!"
Ingmar's standard exploration mode is search. Being on guard duty, he'll generally have his weapon drawn and be prepared to fight, which due to the pick being oversized causes Ingmar to have the clumsy 1 condition (-1 to all Dex-based checks and DCs, including reflex saves and AC) while wielded. I'll keep his stats updated to reflect any changes while affected by various conditions.

Manuk took in the sights. There was so much to see - especially for a city-dweller like her. The desert was a first for her, as was the huge statue. And before she knew what was happening, they were stopping at what appeared to be a lake. What one was doing in the middle of the desert she had no idea - and so she was intrigued and wandered over to it - peering into the water.

"Watch out, wild animals are attacking! Time to earn our pay and make our ancestors proud!"
"Not quite the challenge I had hoped for, but still better than sitting around all day!"
The following is assuming that I can get to the nearest wolf with a total of 40ft. movement, 6xE, 1xSE, 1xS. If there is difficult terrain or I need extra movement to get off the wagon, I'll use another Stride action instead of the Rage, lowering damage by 6(12 on crit). If I cannot get to the wolves even with three Stride actions(60ft.) I'll delay instead until after they've come closer.
Ingmar, who was just just a second ago peacefully riding on the wagon suddenly goes very calm, reaching for some unseen power deep within himself. Only moments later, his eyes go wide and then focus on the wolves that have shown themselves. Nostrils flaring, he shouts "To Glory!" and races towards the nearest foe, bringing his mighty pick down on the animal with even greater strength than you would have believed possible.
{1 action} Rage (+4 temporary hp, +6 melee damage, -1 AC)
{2 actions} Sudden Charge (2x Stride + 1x melee Strike)

Manny makes a note of Ingmar's sudden personality change. "We shall have to keep special notice of that one, Squeakers O'Malley... However, to the task at hand I suppose."
Manny will climb off the wagon so as to not have shot obscured by the contraption, then launch a Ray of Frost at the farther wolf, the one not attacked by ingmar, assuming the closer one is even still standing.
Ray attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 Ray damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Oh my, a crit I see. In which case that's not only 12 damage instead, but also a -10 ft. speed modifier to it's movements for a round.
Squeakers then takes his Independent action and follows after Manny.

Manuk readies her bow at the presence of wolves. She spots two away to her right and stands in the wagon she was sitting in, so as to get a better view of the attackers. damage in case of critical hit: 3d12 + 20 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) + 20 = 28
Nice, if last round's attack roll of 24 was almost a crit, I'm hoping these should be enough to completely rip one wolf apart and kill the other :).
Should that be the case:
With his rage slowly ebbing away, Ingmar looks down at the carnage at his feet and picks up a slightly fire-singed fang that has come loose from the shattered jaw that once held it. "You didn't stand a chance, but you still gave it your all and chose not to flee even when your defeat was all but inevitable. A spark of valor for which I shall remember you!" With that he pockets the tooth and returns to the carts: "Are you alright? Is anyone hurt?"

Clearly, damage to any of her comrades was never going to be a good thing, but Manuk was invariably a pragmatist and saw the fact that Ingmar went down as her opportunity to strike. Ingmar can use Treat Wounds on himself if needed, but would prefer treatment by someone better trained.

She looked over at Ingmar, “Sorry, I could have a go, but I think you’d prefer someone who actually knows what they’re doing to lend a hand. But I can go take a look at that statue.”
So, she duly walks over and takes a good, long look at the effigy and close attention to the stairs.

dirt and sweat, Zig stands tall and straight among them. He
pours over maps of the surrounding area before speaking.
“It is good to see you. They call me Zig. I’m glad my father
asked you to come here to help. “We have been building a very important bridge. But every night, the big cats attack our camp. We leave out meat for them and they saunter right past it. Instead, they seem bent
on filling their bellies with goblin flesh. If we move camp
across the river; they cross over it overnight. If we light fires
around the camp to scare them away, the goblins workers
burn themselves in the flames. It’s a lose-lose situation.
“Every few nights, the cats come back to hunt us. Everyone
is terrified and that’s bad for business. With all this talk of some
saber-toothed whatever coming for us in the night, we’re all
too scared to finish our work. If someone doesn’t take these
furballs out, I suspect the bridge isn’t ever gonna get built.
“These kitties aren’t natural. Whatever you need, you got
it. I can give you workers to build fences. But fences alone
aren’t going to be enough. Either the cats go, or this bridge is
history. The only other answer is death.”
