"You will stop killing these good folk right now, and die now in their place!" Ny'a slices at the dretch, and begins slowly stepping around it to keep its attention focused away from the prisoners.

Actions:

Free: activate Martyr's Shard boon on longsword
Standard: attack dretch
5' step

+1 longsword, martyr's shard: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 1 = 20
Damage, S, martyr's shard: 1d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6 Bypasses DR as cold iron & good alignment

Martyr's Shard 2 wrote:
If you are a paladin or lawful good character capable of casting divine spells, as a free action you can check the box that precedes this boon to grant one weapon you wield a +1 enhancement bonus that stacks with the weapon’s existing enhancement bonus, if any (but not with similar additional enhancements, such as that granted by a paladin’s divine bond ability), and grant it the ability to overcome damage reduction and regeneration as per a cold iron, good-aligned weapon for 1 minute.

Wraith tries to keep up the pressure on the planar horror. She keeps step with it and slashes twice with magically enhanced swiftness.

+1 Cold Iron Curve Blade {Bless Weapon/Flank/Haste/PA}: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 2 = 13
Damage {PA/Sneak Attack}: 1d10 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 7 + (4) = 15

+1 Cold Iron Curve Blade {Bless Weapon/Flank/Haste/PA}: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 = 25
Damage {PA/Sneak Attack}: 1d10 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 7 + (5) = 19

Wraith's strike is enough to bring down the Brimorak, and the Dretch swiftly falls soon after.

Even though Ny'a didn't drop it with her first hit, it would need 20s to hit her and couldn't do enough damage to drop her.
FYI, the high tier with 4-player adjustment would have had a single advanced Schir instead of the two Dretches, and the Brimorak would had both the Giant and Advanced templates.

The surviving prisoners are all unconscious from non-lethal damage, but all seem to be stable.

You hear a distant battle cry, as Sir Ilivan charges.

You don't know how much time he can buy you, and these prisoners are not yet able to move.

I think Ny'a has one LoH left, you have the two potions of healing, any potions you may have of your own, and your wands. You do not need to get everybody upright, but at least 4 of the 7 remaining.

What is the plan?

The ninja snaps her blade out wide, flinging off most of the gore. She wipes the rest off before sheathing the elegant weapon. Wraith then spends a few moments tending to the prisoners with her divine wand.

UMD Wand of CLW vs DC 20: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
UMD Wand of CLW vs DC 20: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 Healed for: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

UMD Wand of CLW vs DC 20: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 Healed for: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Hey, 3 out of 4. Not too shabby. Two more with the potions is five. If N'ya use her LoH, that's six. Anyone have one more? If we are tracking time, that is only four rounds.

In 4 rounds Ny'a can:

Free: drop shield
Move: retrieve wand of cure light wounds
Standard: cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Move: to next prisoner
Standard: cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Move: to next prisoner
Standard: cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Move: to next prisoner
Standard: cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Move: put away wand

And she still has her Lay on Hands for swift healing of herself in combat.

We can each save a charge if we hand off the potions we received. We would also be done in three (3) rounds instead of four.

Feel free to do that. 2 charges off Wraith's wand, 3 from Ny'a's.

You hear the clashing of steel, battle-cries to Iomedae, and screams of pain from both man and horse. You cannot see what is going on, but that also means the demons can't see you. However many demons there are - and it sounds like there are a lot - Sir Ilivan manages to fight long enough for you to get the wounded to their feet and make your way out of the gulch.

Bringing along the body of Ny'a's riding dog, the party heads back to Fort Portolmaeus.

The Wardstone Patrol wrote:
So long as the PCs don’t engage in any reckless heroics that would surely get the surviving crusaders killed, they return to Fort Portolmaeus without further trouble.

There are cheers at Fort Portolmaeus as you return with the rescued soldiers, though also some murmurs.

"You have returned!" says Commander Manaria Wardroxan, "but what of Sir Ilivan?"

Ny'a, the wetted streaks of dusty tear-flow staining her downcast face, answers as best as she can.

"Sir Ilivan single-handedly held off a demonic assault so that we could escape with your men." She looks up at Commander Wardroxan. "I don't expect we'll see him again, but I expect he's found his peace." She moves to the make-shift litter they used to carry her dog back, sits, and drops her head into her hands. Was it worth it, my lady? Please, let me know that it was all worth it.

"Last we saw him, he rode off to face the horde alone. He bought us the time we needed to save the others. Unfortunately, we have not seen him since the battle. Though I fear he is yet one more soul taken from us this day, we should not give up hope until we are certain of his fate."

”He put up a brave fight, it seems. Without him distracting the others, we’d have never been able to rescue the men,” Pau admits.

Upon returning to Nerosyan, Venture-Captain Jorsal and a representative of the Mendevian military ask you to give a full report.

For your rescue of the cavalrymen, you are hailed as heroes. Jack and Ithindar are mourned. Either player could expend Prestige for a body recovery, as at some point the Vermleks will abandon those bodies.

A few weeks later, word reaches you that an expedition has recovered Sir Ilivan’s body. A Speak With Dead confirms that he fell in that battle, and is grateful to you for giving him the clarity of vision needed to redeem himself. Sir Ilivan was buried with full honors, and you are to be presented with his weapons and armor. That is, they are on the Chronicle Sheet for purchase.

Silgil slumps in relief when the final battle ends.

"Shouldn't we go help Sir Ilivan?"

I assume he gets the response that they need to rescue the prisoners, or that this is what Sir Ilivan would want, Silgil agrees, recognizing the suicidal fatality of joining the knight.

Silgil also attempts to heal, though his skill in using a cleric wand is almost non-existent.

He does manage to get off one spell though! Save one of you a charge?

It is a bittersweet victory and for the first time Silgil has names to visit at the wall that he knows personally.

Unfortunately, I think the nat 1 you rolled disabled your wand for the day.

Missed that. No UMD for Silgil then.
