Torku grabs a scroll for walking on air before the trial, taking deep breaths and putting the payment on the counter rather than throwing it in the shopkeeper's face like he wants to. Idiots - the whole town. And here we are going along with them. Can the venture captain fund these expenses to keep the Society from looking like incompetent fools? No, of course not - "That's what we pay you the big bucks for". Hog shit.

Outside the grand arena, the tiefling pulls out his freshly-procured scroll and reads through it carefully. "Clerics and their need to overcomplicate everything," he mutters under his breath as he holds the scroll in one hand and draws complex sigils in the air with the other.

Purchasing and using a scroll of air walk - at minimum caster level (7), it should be good for 70 minutes (which was why he paid extra rather than just a scroll of fly - well, that and for the shock value to his opponents should he step on a pit trap and the sand beneath him falls away but Torku remains standing firmly on thin air above it (it's the little things, you know?)).

Caster Level vs DC 8: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Torku carefully takes a step up into the air, then back down to the ground. "That ought to do it - and if what the priest said was true, it'll be good for over an hour." He puts a hand on the hilt of his blade and a thin green film covers him momentarily before fading into his skin. "And there's that. No guarantee they'll use acid, but never hurts to be prepared." At least as prepared as one can be with such a lousy situation.

Casting resist energy (acid) (good for 40 minutes) and ready to enter. I'm assuming using something like Legacy Weapon would be treated like activating a magic item, so he won't use that until we're out in the arena.

Makras awakens with a groan, mildly depressed that a night hag didn't kill him while he was sleeping. He fumbles on the floor for what's either leftover spiced wine or the chamber pot, and rinses his mouth with the contents. "Today could be the day the world ends," he thinks to cheer himself up, and heads over the arena.

Your match against Helkit headlines a long day of battle. In the late morning, a handful of naked, convicted criminals are led into the arena. You recognize one of them as one of the pirates who tried to board your skiff.the pirates who tried to steal your skiff. This group of prisoners get to earn a chance at freedom. All the have to do is “fight” a gelatinous cube. This serves to warm the crowd for more brawls to come. After herding the skeleton filled cube offstage, numerous one-on-one matches fill out the schedule as up-and-coming gladiators face off.

By the time the final match rolls around, the crowd is rabid with excitement; the return of a retired gladiator is a rare treat. As the challengers, you enter first through the western gate.

The master of ceremonies roars an introduction for each of you through a bullhorn, announcing each by name and reputation.

"Entering the Arena of Aroden at this time are the challengers. First, don't judge him by his crimson red skin ladies and gentlemen. While of demon-blood, this warrior has been know to try and disable an opponent first rather than kill them out right. He must have learned that from his mama. Let's hear it for...TOORRRRKUUUU!!!"

"Stepping in next, a true master of elements and beast. Whether summoning creatures from distant planes or fighting side by side with a fierce and bloody dinosaur, this lowly dwarf rises to any occasion. Put your hands together for...SADAF KAAAAARGAR and DAAAAANNNNN-DUUUUUUNNN!!!"

"And now, the heavens themselves have sent their own representative. She's part-angel, part archer, and full-time cat lover. In any case, she's guaranteed to put an arrow through your hearts. "We have a real treat for you entering next. After the crowd settles down, the announcer points to the far side of the arena.

"And now ladies and gentlemen, the reason you came here today. A woman who earned her freedom in this very pit. She's killed, she's vanquished, she has outright destroyed every obstacle placed before her. All she knows is how to win. And today she comes out of retirement for this very special match. Leading the Silver Slayers ...a woman who need no introduction. You know her...you love her...your home town hero...The Arena of Aroden Assassin...the best of us...the one...the only...HEEELLLLLKIIIT SIIIIIILLLLVVEEERRRRR BAAAAANNNNNNE!!!!!"

As one would expect, the crowd goes absolutely rabid as Helkit and her team step onto the sand.

"And of course, she's not alone. Making his debut tonight, a ferocious beast of fangs. Some call it a thylacine, others know it as a Sarusan wolf, in Tian Xia it spreads fear as a blood cougar. Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight you can call him BRIIIIIMMMMM STOOOOONNNNNNNE!!"!

Either that or their background checks were very thorough.

The eastern gate opens, and Helkit leads a group onto the floor. She wears a patchwork assortment of armor, scuffed and showing signs of many battles. Nevertheless, it is clearly custom-fitted and in excellent repair. She holds a chain, attached to the collar of a pony-sized beast resembling a cross between a wolf and a tiger. Completing her team are a number of men and women clad in oiled armor and tabards of silver and crimson. They come to a halt. Helkit unchains her pet, then brandishes her greataxe aloft to the vocal pleasure of the crowd.

As the Silver Slayers walk on to the pitch, the announcer continues. "“Now, Tymons, here’s the match you’ve waited for! It’s been years since she earned her status as one of our finest, but she’s lost none of her skill or style with an axe. Let her know how glad you are to see her fighting again—you certainly don’t want to be on her bad side!"

Vulpina notices that each Slayer has a few javelins. She also believes their shields are designed to be thrown at close range. Helkit also has a javelin. Vulipa does not see a dedicated archer. Perhaps because it is less exciting for the bloodthirsty crowd.

"A pity," she chuckles, tossing it into the sand.

She will Gunslinger's Dodge if attacked at range (+2AC) or Dodging Panache in melee (+4AC). Worth noting, she is fighting defensively, and will be gaining an additional +4AC either way.

The aasimar's shot strikes true, giving the Pathfinders first blood!

Helkit sneers at Vulpine, "You'll regret walking into my arena." The gladiator pulls a flask from her pouch, bites the cork and spits it to the ground. She then drinks down the contents before casting the flask to the side. A moment passes, before Helkit begins to grow. In a matter of seconds, she doubles in size!

Torku taps his arm with his blade and conjures his translucent disk of force once more. He also takes a few steps forward, feet not crunching on the sand as he floats just above the surface of the arena.

Casting shield, activating Sudden Speed as a swift action, and moving.

The slayers move in unison, holding their shields up defensively as they move forward. They stop between the pillars and hurl their javelins, splitting their efforts, half at Torku, the other pair at Vulpina. One comes close to hitting the tiefling, but it skitters off Torku's defensive aura. Vulpina waits until the last moment before spinning to the side as a javelin nearly hits her. Yay for Shield and Gunslinger's Dodge!

Sadaf casts a spell and suddenly stone falls on their opponents!

Stone call, bludgeoning damage to every creature in the area. This damage only occurs once, when the spell is cast. : 2d6 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8

A rain of dirt, gravel, and small pebbles fills the area.

For the next four rounds, this debris covers the ground, making the entire area difficult terrain. At the end of the duration, the rocks disappear, leaving no aftereffects (other than the damage dealt).

Stones materialize in the air above the arena and then plummet to the ground. The slayers try to get their shields up, but the entire sextet is pummeled by falling earth.

One unexpected side-effect is that you see some of the stones splash instead of sending up dust. This reveals the location of many 'shifting sands', as well as give some clue to their quicksand-like nature.

Torku prepares his blade as Makras casts a spell, showing the Slayers what awaits all men. Most of them are shaken by what they see. Doran's arrow strikes true, nearly dropping the man. In response, the foot-soldiers move forward.

It is clear that the stone debris is hindering their progress. Still, these men are professionals. Two hurl javelins at Doran, the last last one at Vulpina. Unfortunately for the Slayers, all fail to find their mark.
