The Dragon's Demand

The party closes in on the remaining undead creature and systematically tear him into pieces. Everyone's weapons, including the teeth and claws of the animals seem to have their full affect. With both vampires not only dead but decapitated, all it will take to put them fully at rest is a blessing from a non-evil cleric and perhaps a few drops of holy water. Either Arbiscar, Therin or even Munn could do the job.

With the vampires slain, Ordelia flickers then comes fully into existence.
She opens her mouth and then clasps a hand to it in surprise when words come out.

"Oh my voice! Its so good to hear my voice again! The actions of these vile creatures have weakened my connection to this world and your actions have restored it. Gather around and feel the healing grace of Desna!"

Channel Healing Energy: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 1, 5) = 16

Channel Healing Energy: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 2, 2) = 9

As her healing energy fills the room, Davorge and the blue man with butterfly wings begin to stir awake. As the collect their bearings Ordelia presents the party with a glass picture frame holding a tiny, gold plated four leaf clover.

Luvyire’s wings shimmer in the light of the waxing moon as he speaks, heedless of the blood drenching his white robes, “Thank you for your assistance, heroes. I’d definitely have been slain if not for your help. I heard bits and pieces of your investigation from here while I rested, and I believe I have the answers you seek.'

"You see, I am a servitor of the True Spark, Ashava. Along with two of my dearest friends, I watched over the Glade of the Silver Spark just outside your City of Monuments, longer than the Arvensoar has stretched toward Magnimar’s sky. Two weeks ago, our home was attacked by a malevolent will-o’-wisp called Tulvhatha. She and her servants called upon dark powers to corrupt the glade, and they tore my friends apart,”
Luvyire stops, tears welling in his eyes. After a pause, he shakes them free and continues. “I knew they were after the Soul Spark. It is a relic, a magical effigy that serves as a beacon for souls. Once the Soul Spark draws in wandering spirits, it is a simple matter for Ashava’s servants to guide them to the great River where they can find peace. I knew I couldn’t protect it alone, so I fled to Magnimar to seek aid. But my injuries slowed my flight, and the cultists tracked me down. They meant to kill me, and they nearly succeeded.”

Luvyire continues, stopping briefly to gesture to Ordellia. “If Ordellia had not come to my aid, I would have met my end at their hands. I am the one left to defend the Soul Spark, but I cannot defend it without help.”
“Of course,” Ordellia interjects. “By Desna’s grace, we shall all do our part to quell the evil that lingers in the Mushfens.”

Hope fills Luvyire’s eyes. “That’s excellent! Together, I just know we can,” Luvyire’s excitement is cut short as he winces in pain, fresh blood oozing from his wounds. “I... it might be better if you go without me. But remember, heroes. Though alone you might dance, the True Spark is forever your audience. I believe I can give you a blessing in Ashava’s name, should you choose to accept it.”

I am assuming everyone is on board with helping Luvyire and/or receiving Ashava's blessing.

Luyvire has the party take his hands one at a time and when he lets go a tattoo of a full moon appears on the top of their hands. When they touch the tattoo, they receive a vision of themselves dancing in Magnimar under the light of a full moon, and slowly transforming into a silver furred werewolf.

"Then it's settled," Luvyire finishes solemnly. "By the light of the next full moon, you shall hunt."

Several weeks pass as the party waits for the next full moon. Several days after finishing the investigation, a servant of Mayor Grobaras comes to the lodge, bearing ribbons and a commemorative certificate claiming that the Pathfinders were hired by him to investigate the monument disturbances and acknowledging their service and support to his rightful regime.

Loose Ends...The Conclusion to Part I

Davorge meets with the party shortly after the events of the investigation to thank them once again and to fill them in on some of the local gossip happening in Magnimar. He is looking rather healthy and besides the fact that he has traded his blue great coat for a mauve colored one there is no evidence that he was energy drained by vampires and injured to the brink of death less than a week ago.

"The Lord Mayor taking credit for hiring you has caused quite a stir in Magnimar. The Varisian Council is wondering if the Pathfinders are going to disavow Grobaras's claims or let his claim that he was the one to solve the city's problems stand. Either way, you're going to make some people unhappy."

"I would have loved to see Theodorus's face when he found out that you folks were going to get all the credit for his 'precious' investigation. He still thinks there is a greater vampire behind the whole plot, but honestly, I think these were just servants in search of a master and Tulvhatha fit the bill. Anyways, as we speak, he is shaking down any Varisian too slow or stupid to avoid him. He's desperate to find any evidence he can that there is a vampire problem in this city and he's found some people that are willing to give eye witness testimony. Poor man! He never learned how to lose gracefully!"

There is just one more choice to make before I can give you guys chronicle sheets. You need to decide if you're want to keep the ribbon and commemorative plaque that Lord Mayor Grobaras presented to you or if you'd rather destroy it and disavow that he hired you. You can decide this individually or as a group.

Kala awkwardly accepts the ribbon and plaque with a mumbled "Uh, thanks." Staring at them in her hands, she is completely unsure of what she should do with them. Her nomadic Kellid upbringing urges her to discard useless stuff, and that is certainly her first impulse (especially since they're symbols of a bunch of baloney). Still, Mun has a point... She's dealing with politics more often now (Groooan!), so they may come in useful. But... Would she actually use them? That's not how she prefers to handle situations. Arrrgh! Why can't decisions be easy?!

Stuffing them under one arm, she digs her fingers into the coarse fur of Stinky's neck, scratching deeply for a while before returning to her dilemma. Which choice would bug me less? Hmm... If I keep them, they'll always remind me of this choice I have to make and all the reasons it's so hard. But if I get rid of them, I'll forget about all this eventually and be fine. Yup. They gotta go. ...But how? I really don't want to make the Lord Mayor an enemy... I guess I'll hang onto them for now, and "accidentally" lose them after I leave Magnimar. Yeah. That'll work. Kala nods to herself, finally satisfied with her course of action.

We surely did the good deed here. Would it harm us in letting the mayor get the honors? Not really. I wouldn't care if it was the real truth. But the fact is, it's a lie. A political one. So I should answer with as much diplomacy as possible. Diplomacy is the art of the polite, articulated lies and half truths.

Scratching Lybna's head, Eredur comes to a balanced conclusion, and gives back the mayor's offerings

Tell the mayor I'm honored, but I don't feel I've done enough for Magnimar to deserve such public recognition. I'm more a "do the good thing and keep quiet about it" kind of dwarf.

"It is simply not true. I cannot accept this ribbon Lord Grobara's" Arbiscar outright rejects the ribbon when it was presented and remains loyal to the Varisian Council whatever it costs to him.

"Theodorus seemed to recover very fast. Don't you find that suspicious? I hope he is not part of this vampire problem he so heartily states to be persecuting" the dwarf is happy to sum up the results of their investigation in a chronicle for the Pathfinder Society he also passes to the Varisian Council.

Still, the idea that something is to happen at the next full moon puts Arbiscar at unease for the rest of the month.

The Dragon's Demand

There might be some confusion here. Theodorus was the uptight investigator and he was NOT present during the Souleater and vampire attack. Davorge is the helpful occult expert you met in the Rose and the Rake tavern and he was severely injured and energy drained during the fight. But Ordelia's ghost happens to be a level 9 cleric, so she was able to help heal him up. In fact, if any of you did get afflicted with mummy rot, she would have healed it for free. So there isn't really any reason to be suspicious of Davorge or Theodorus at this time.

Everyone's chronicles should be in here. Give me a shout out if something is wrong with them, though. Usually there is a mistake or two for me to fix.

Part 2: The Howling Dance

Several weeks after the investigation into the supernatural events happening at various monuments within Magnimar, the Pathfinder team is summoned once again to meet with Sheila Heidmarch.

Sunlight streams through the dining hall’s windowpanes, illuminating the numerous dishes of food set on the table. Among the selection is a salad of fiddleheads, wild mushrooms, and herbs, a tray of grilled mackerel dressed with fen pepper, a plate of stuffed cabbage leaves, a bowl of maize porridge, and a tray of cheeses, nuts, and plums. A blue-skinned man with solid black eyes, pointed ears, and butterfly wings stands nearby. He casts a curious gaze at the display while Venture- Captain Sheila Heidmarch strides forward with a warm smile.

“Thank you for joining us for luncheon, Pathfinders.” She gestures to the array on the table with a proud gleam in her eyes. “I thought we might chat over some quality Varisian cuisine. Please take a seat and help yourself to whatever you like, though I do recommend trying the mackerel—it’s freshly caught this morning.” Settling into her seat, Venture-Captain Heidmarch pours herself a small glass of chilled white wine and reclines.

“As you know, your investigation into the recent necromantic activity in Magnimar traced the attacks back to a will-o’-wisp named Tulvhatha, who has taken control of a holy site of Ashava known as the Glade of Silver Sparks. From what you’ve already seen in the city, along with Luvyire’s account of what occurred at the glade, it’s clear this creature wields power that surpasses most others of her kind.” She flicks her gaze toward the blue-skinned man and inclines her head toward him.

“Luvyire here has already offered Ashava’s blessing to transform your party into holy emissaries of the True Spark—something which can only be accomplished by the light of the full moon.”

The venture-captain pauses to sip her wine and idly runs a finger across the rim of the empty plate before her. “Tonight will be the full moon, and with it the chance to seek out the will-o’-wisp Tulvhatha and end her destruction.”

Luvyire perks up from the assortment of food and glances longingly to the window before looking back. “I’m sorry I won’t be able to join you, Pathfinders. After recently being on the receiving end of Tulvhatha’s wrath, I fear I’m still too weak to make the journey. May Ashava watch over you and keep you safe.”

“I’m glad you’re finally seeing reason, Luvyire,” says the venture-captain. “You’ve already helped enough, and Magnimar is safer for it. As for you, Pathfinders, given the unique nature of the blessing Luvyire has bestowed upon you, you will need to exercise discretion. Your transformation will draw unnecessary alarm if witnessed by civilians. With this in mind, please be sure to be at the Mushfens by sunset. Take the time to prepare yourself for this evening however you need. Luvyire and I are here if you need our assistance. Remember, you have only this one night to discover the Glade of Silver Sparks and destroy Tulvhatha. Be quick, but be careful—you go against a formidable foe.”

"I assume these delicatessen are part of the payment" Arbiscar extends his hand to pick up a goat cheese slice, picking up a dish of grilled mackerel afterwards.

After listening attentively at the whole exposition, the dwarf speaks up "Allow me to put it bluntly, but why we need the transformation in the first place?"

"Also... what makes Tulvhatha different to other will-o'-wisp? Hum vilovisp, did I said it correctly?" the dwarf picks up a spoon of porridge and devours it eagerly.

Luvyire responds to the Arbiscar, "Even with my directions, it will be nearly impossible for you to locate the glade without the blessing. Furthermore, Tulvhatha is not your typical will-o’-wisp. She stands above her kind, and she now harnesses considerable necromantic power. You will need Ashava’s guidance to succeed. If you fail, the people of this city will be in grave danger. Please think of them, Pathfinders.”

Heidmarch interjects. “She is a vicious will-o’-wisp possessing great supernatural strength beyond the capability of most of her kind. She’s
likely taken control of the Glade of Silver Sparks to usurp its power and use it to her advantage. Beyond this, we know very little about her.”

Eredur knows that many people assume that will o'wisps are undead but they are actually abberations. They are highly intelligent, although like many abberations their thoughts and motives can be hard to understand. They normally glow with a strange light but they can deactivate this at will, becoming completely invisible. They are also completely immune to magic, with the notable exceptions of magic missile and maze.

Mun expresses his determination to serve Ashava so directly and Therin offers to lend his full support. Finnius is less eager, having concerns about what will happen to his equipment.

Luvyire responds, "Lycantrophy is similar to other magical transformations. Your equipment should not be damaged by the change but may become unavailable if the new form is incompatible with it."

Tsk tsk tsk, Arbiscar. I didn't say anything about will o'wisps having an electrical attack. Have you been checking out d20PFSRD?

Luvyire answers Kala sorrowfully, “The glade is... was a holy dancing field dedicated to Ashava. I maintained and guarded it with two of my dearest friends, who died protecting it. The site also held a sacred relic called the Soul Spark—a mystical orb that helped draw in wayward spirits so that we might lead them to their final resting places. I don’t know what has become of it or the glade now.”

The party makes their preparations then begins their journey into the Mushfens. As the moonlight washes over them, they begin to slowly change. Silver hair the color of moonlight sprouts from their flesh and they feel their senses begin to sharp and their muscles strengthen as the change takes over.

Moonlight streams through the forest’s thick canopy of dark branches. The chirps and gurgles of nocturnal critters echo in a soft, steady hum, interrupted only by the occasional snapping of a twig or low hoot of an owl. In the distance, fireflies flicker in the shadows. The scent of wet moss and dirt clings to the misty air. Several damp paths branch off, each leading deeper into the swampy woods.

A sharp breeze cuts through the night, rustling loudly through the trees and brambles. Shadowy figures emerge from the undergrowth. The husky voice of the tallest figure calls out, “Halt where you are, monsters! “I knew there was darkness inside you, Pathfinders,” the man continues, his gaze a steely fire of determination and fury. “Does the rest of the Pathfinder Society even know what foul beasts walk among them, or do they know and harbor you nonetheless? Maybe it’s even worse than that, hmm? Perhaps this paltry cabal of you represents the true face of the entire organization. Be assured that I shall find out. But for now, I see the truth of your malignant nature, and the ruse ends here—along with your lives!”

Eredur and Mun are up!

All the green squares and the bog squars are difficult terrain. The only spots that are NOT difficult terrain is the path. The gray section in the southwest corner is a spider web.

Mun holds a hand out to Selune, trying a diplomatic tactic first.

"Do you forget so quickly? We are not monsters! What you see are manifest blessings of Ashava, The True Spark, empyreal lord of moonlight. Look to the sky! See Ashava's moon in her glory!" He fishes into the breast pocket and retrieves the ribbon given to them by the Lord Mayor. "We are the heroes that defeated the vampiric cabal that was haunting Magnimar's monuments. The Lord Mayor has honored us for that work, and we go now to finish it and defeat the evil forces that were ultimately behind it! Do not harry us; we can brook no delay."

Diplomacy, extremely fashionable: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 14 + 1 = 34

One of the guards jumps out of the bushes with sap in his hand and takes a swipe at Selune. Selune hits him with her bite but the warrior is undettered and beats the top of the bear's head. He strikes Selune in the nose with the sap, screaming "Abomination! Die!" The attack is clearly meant to both injure and demoralize the beast, but Selune stands firm.

Showing the ribbon actually makes Theodorus even more angry. "How dare you mock me with the symbol of your stolen glory! I will exterminate you just as I rooted out the vampiric threat from Magnimar!"

Remember, the Lord Mayor Grobraras originally hired Theodorus to investigate the monuments, but the Pathfinders ended up solving the problem and getting all the credit. Showing Theodorus the ribbon is just rubbing in his failure.

To be fair, you never said Theodorus. ;)

The Dragon's Demand

That's super fair. I read through the boxed text a couple of times and missed that they don't actually give Theodorus's name!

As the Pathfinders join in battle they can see that the tall figure with the intense square is the Investigator Theodorus, decked out in armor and wielding a bow. He cries out in fury when he sees Mun hold up the ribbon and his men begin to rush forward to attack.

"Believe me, no one is more pissed off by this curse than myself, and we will get rid of it as soon as we destroy Tulvhatha once and for all. Stay down and help us, or at least do not get in the way" the dwarf calls the inquisitor bitterly.

Arbiscar gets into full defense.

Kala and Stinky stumble out of the woods and into the thick webs of some massive spider. As the companions struggle through the sticky webs, Kala sees that there is a seven foot long alligator wrapped up in a cocoon. As she looks around she sees other cocoons that look like they may be holding the corpses of racoons, squirrells, and another large one with antlers poking out of the silk casing.

Kala, this area is like a web spell with a DC 13. You and Stinky will need to make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist to avoid becoming grappled by the webs right now.

Arbiscar and Therin push through the brambles to get closer to their foes. The two warriors draw blades and move in to attack.
