"Aye, I can. Make room." The centaur heads down the staired tunnel. When he gets adjacent to Kaia he grabs her and backs out.

Still has his shield ready without weapon in hand. Move 40ish down. Bonus Action to grab Kaia, and Dash out.

Athletics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Hi guys going to have to retcon some actions here. Kaia is not dying she still has 4 HP. 1st attack 6 pts, 2nd attack 9 HP. PLEASE read the posts more thoroughly. We have to spend an inordinate amount of time retconning.

As far as burning the door / temple... Only one way to find out :-).

Coronus While your action is brave it's really not possible. The stairs are difficult terrain for you, and you have to move through multiple characters to even get too Kaia. 40' of movement would get you to the square just behind Lysander in the latest map. In addition Kaia is still stuck to the door, and still alive. So pulling her out would only offset the disadvantage to the grapple check she would need to pull away. If she were dead it would take an opposed STR Check to pull her free, and retreating with her would evoke an AoO if you had any movement left to do so.

Kaia You are not dead, just grappled. If you wish to attack with a light weapon you may. If you wish to try to escape the grapple you may. Or you could hold action, and hope someone with movement left can offer you assistance so you don't roll with disadvantage to escape.

Seeing Kaia still moving, Coronus stays in the temple.

Current Map Heidmarch Manor God Infinity........

Okay. I guess I'll move things along. Tactacile map is same as last round, except Kaia is not in the square on the steps in front of Mateo.

@Aristieds, Mateo, and Coronus>> Stand around and look at the surroundings, nodding at Proteus as he emerges to tell you that there is no door at the bottom of the stairs.

@Novyn>> Pulls forth a flask of oil, and tinderstick, starts to hand it down the stairs, and realizes there is nobody to hand it to be taking it from her.

@Kaia>> I'll use your first roll as an Acrobatics check for a total of 15. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 Acrobatics check to pull free. With a sudden lurch Kaia is able to pull free of the Doors adhesive touch. 1d2 ⇒ 1 The door snaps at her again 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 as she tries to retreat, but only snaps at the air. Kaia escaped the clutches, then used her move to retreat up the stairs.

The creature then sends out an adhesive pseudopod at the only character still in reach... Lysander. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Pod attack but is unable to score a hit on the armored warrior.

Lysander up... then everyone else.

Since I'm used to PF2, mostly, I forget. In 5e, at this level the only eay I get an extra attack is with ym Action Surge, rigt?

I've better things to do tonight than get eaten by a door." Lysander says, mostly to himself then calls out. "Novyn, think you can light some of your arrows on fire?"

With some effot in the close quarters, the big man attacks the seeking tendril of Definitely-not-a-door as an obvious target.

Makhaira: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Slashing Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Yay, we're doomed!

Ready for the NotADoor's next attack, Lysander lifts his shield to take the brunt.

The Exchange

"Yeah. I can light my arrows on fire. But at this angle the only thing I can hit is you."

This stairway situation sucks for pretty much all of us, we need to do some battlefield control here, imo. Yeah, one person can stand there and solo melee it. But I was thinking maybe it would move out of its hidey camp spot if we lit the ground on fire beneath it. Or perhaps someone could take the Shove action and push it through into the adjoining chamber.

Aristeides thinks carefully about the fire idea. He slowly tries to show his head and get a glimpse of the animated door or the place nearby, and waits patiently to do so. When he finally achieves it, he quickly conjures a puddle of oily substance right under the Notadoor.

Casting Grease when able to do so, in case the NaD stumbles or someone sets it on fire.

With Kaia out of the way, Mateo moves in closer to strike at the attacking door with his blade in hand. Lysander's spear keeps it distracted as he aims for one of the wounds upon it, striking at the mimic's weakened points.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Whether he hit or not, the scout pulls back, clearing the way and ensuring that his allies cpuld move in to replace him.

Disengage action as a bonus action to move away without provoking.

The Exchange

Novyn works her way closer to the door, grabbing a torch from the wall.

Can only get about half way there I think. Will pour oil and light next round.

Coronus looks around the temple for some large fuel that can be leaned against the NotADoor and set on fire steadily burning, like wooden furniture. If he cannot find anything, he'll ask Proteus.

Current Map Heidmarch Manor God Infinity........

@Aristiedes>>: Aristiedes holds action to cast grease if the opportunity presents itself. {Not sure where you're planning on casting it as you don't have Line of site. Please clarify}.

@Mateo>>: Technically you don't have enough movement to move in, attack, then move out along with using the disengage action... which doesn't include movement, but this battle is so long I"m going to allow it. You'll just end up between Lysander and Kaia on the staircase.
Mateo quickly dashes down the stairs dodging past Kaia, and Lysander to score a nasty oozing wound adjacent to Kaia's arrow wound. He then nimbly darst back behind Lysander.

@Novyn>> Like Aristiedes I'm not sure wher you plan on throwing the oil, as you don't have line of site. I guess you could attempt to throw it over Kaia, Mateo, Lysander... and maybe Aristiedes head to explode on the floor in front of the door, but you don't have line of site on the door. Novyn pulls forth her oil trying to decide how to get to a place to light a fire. Technically you could use a double move to get to the space right in front of the door if that's what you want?

@Coronus>> Coronus questions Proteus about flammable objects and learns that short of any wood outside, the only other nearby source of wood is the furniture in the Acolytes chambers... which if he feels is necessary to rescue the Oracle is freely offered.

Kaia UP then the door

To All I'm not usually a stickler for movement and position in PbP, but the environment is a major part of this encounter in this case.

Coronus thanks Proteus and heads toward the Acolytes chamber to find the best fuel for the fire.

I meant to cast Grease of I can find a gap in the front line, so I would be squeezing there to get a better angle. Also, I do remember stating Aristeides was passing the oil flask to the next one in the line, but it seems this was ignored.

The Exchange

Ari, I noticed but DM said no one took it so went with that.

DM, I don't want to throw the oil, I want to pour it on the 5 ft square at the bottom of the stairs in an effort to get the thing the fudge out of there. My assumption is that it will not enjoy standing in the middle of a fire and might move. I didn't think I could make it all the way and pour and light in one turn, so I tried to move halfway there during my turn. Can I move the rest of the way and do it now? Maybe you should just tell me how I can accomplish that, or if I can't.

Oil Flask:

Oil usually comes in a clay flask that holds 1 pint. As an action, you can splash the oil in this flask onto a creature within 5 feet of you or throw it up to 20 feet, shattering it on impact. Make a ranged attack against a target creature or object, treating the oil as an improvised weapon. On a hit, the target is covered in oil. If the target takes any fire damage before the oil dries (after 1 minute), the target takes an additional 5 fire damage from the burning oil. You can also pour a flask of oil on the ground to cover a 5-foot-square area, provided that the surface is level. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 5 fire damage to any creature that enters the area or ends its turn in the area. A creature can take this damage only once per turn.

That bolded effect was what I was thinking might help here.
If it doesn't move, she has 4 more flasks and maybe we can just kill it that way.

Kaia will just get out of the way.

@Kaia>> Bloody, bruised and covered in acidic blisters, Kaia stumbles up the rest of the stairways, and reclines against a wall in the upstairs hall. She arrives just in time to see Coronus gallop down the hallway and disappear into another door, followed closely by Proteus.

@Novyn and Aristiedes>>It was not up to the DM to decide if anyone took the oil flask, it was up to whoever was in next in line to say they took it. :-) 1d2 ⇒ 2.

Novyn. The problem was that until Kaia moved the only vacant square within your movement range was the one directly in front of the door. Since Kaia moved there is now a vacant square within a quick toss of the oil. (Remember you have to end your movement in an unoccupied square.) Novyn and Arisitedes

Novyn and Aristiedes both start for the closer spot on the stairways as the blooded Kaia passes them by on her way to safety. Novyn is just a little quicker, and is able to reach the area just behind Mateo and Lysander. "Duck". she screams, as she tosses the oil to the floor directly in front of the door where it lands shattering and coating the whole area with oil. I'll allow you to use your rogue bonus action to follow with a torch, or dash back up the stairs. If you throw the torch I'll need a ranged attack roll to keep from accidentally hitting a party member DC-7

The door robbed of it's delicious morsel turns it's attention to the armored bug diagonal to it, and slings out another pseudopod.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Slam attack on Lysander... but as it moves a shattering glass sound appears, spoiling it's oily aim. Lysander is up with his oil coated shield. (No Mechanical Effect).

@Aristides>>You realize that the grease spell would also coat the square that Lysander is currently combating from. Do you wish to still cast the spell?

Lysander up, then I'll reset the map and the party will be up.

Current Map Heidmarch Manor God Infinity........

@Coronus>> You gallop down the hall closely pursued by Proteus. Lysander strikes out with his Makhaira at NotADoor's pseudopod before bracing behind his shield to give the others a chance to move behind him.

"We're too tight in here. Novyn, Kaia, can you shoot down some flame to where the oil struck? I'll leave my shield behind if needs be. The rest of us, let's clear the stairway so we can maneuver in and out."

With the oil covering the door finally, Aristeides sees no point in using his spell, which might also be dangerous for Lysander. Instead, he shoots a fiery bolt at the oil, wishing it helps sprout flame.

Fire Bolt: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Damage: 1d10 ⇒ 4

The Exchange

The cursed rogue dashed back up the stairs faster than flame.

Current Map Heidmarch Manor God Infinity........

@Lysander>> Lysander strikes out at the door, once again leaving a deep bleeding wound in it's surface. You're shield is splattered with oil. Your shield is not drenched in oil. Only some splatters from where the flask broke. No mechanical effect.

@Coronus>>If you look at the tactical map (Acolyte Chambers) in my profile you'll see that the first door is open, and you see the description in the post above.

"Well I'm not sure why you would want our best furniture, but it is all equal. Only the doors, the bedframes, and a chest in each room is made of wood".

After you sling open the first door, right in front of you, to a simple 10' x 10' square chamber, you see a simple wooden bedframe bed, and a chest at the foot of the bed.

"This is my room. You are welcome to anything in it".

@Aristiedes>>: Technically if you ready a spell to be cast you have to name the spell and the triggering action. I realize this is a new rules system to many of you, so instead of casting the grease spell, I'll not penalize you the spell slot this time.

Readying a spell:
When you ready a spell, you cast it as normal but hold its energy, which you release with your reaction when the trigger occurs. To be readied, a spell must have a casting time of 1 action, and holding onto the spell's magic requires concentration (explained in chapter 10). If your concentration is broken, the spell dissipates without taking effect. For example, if you are concentrating on the web spell and ready magic missile, your web spell ends, and if you take damage before you release magic missile with your reaction, your concentration might be broken.

Next Round... Party up.

@Aristiedes>> Aristiedes squeezes down the staircase, and releases a fire bolt hoping that it will strike true in the oil splashed area... and with a whoosh fire erupts in the space between Lysander and the door. The heat nearly singes Lysanders eyebrows, as it ignites.

Mateo stands back a bit, watching the coordination of his fellows in a more difficult circumstance. The mimic was wisely placed; only a few could actually engage it at all. With flames in front of the door now, the rogue stays behind Lysander's shield, ready to assist.

Round 5

Current Map Heidmarch Manor God Infinity........

Beyond the flaming entrance

Just a note to clarify readied action. In 5E the "only" way this can work is that you declare a triggering action, then declare what your reaction to this action will be. You must declare the action, and the trigger, or the held action is wasted. In this instance Mateo held an action to attack the creature if it pulled within reach, but since that never occurred his actions for this round are finished. In this case not a big deal, as it's his turn anyway.

@Mateo>>: Mateo is surprised when Lysander avoids the flame and jumps through the flame into the other room. He freezes for just a second, then shrugs, and follows the warrior through the flaming area. He bears the heat of the flame with bravery, and steps though quickly assessing the situation, and dealing a vicious wound to the Not-a-door, which slumps to the ground unmoving.

Take 5-points of fire damage for passing through the square.

There is no save for this. The not-a-door saved last round to see if he took any damage, as he actually wasn't in the square that was flaming. I ruled that due to his anatomy, and the surprise of the tactic he took damage anyway.

End of Combat.....For now anyway.

@Coronus>>: Coronus arrives at the top of the stairs with the others, the smoke now thickening in the hallway as something causes the smoke to suddenly take direction and head up the stairs. He carries a wooden chest and inquires about the situation.

@Novyn>>: You saw the same thing as Aristeides... so you can still act this round... then we are out of initiative.

We are now out of combat... It takes the fire another few seconds to die down (1-Round) with no further fuel. Mateo and Lysander are in a large chamber with a stream running through it. There is an island with some carpets and blankets lying on it in the center of the chamber. Mists, and vapor rise at random points in the cave. There is a dark opening on the South side of the chamber that the stream disappears into.

The remainder of the party waits at the top of the stairs, except for Aristeides who's about 15 feet from the opening that Lysander and Mateo jumped through. The slowly clearing smoke in the stairway keeps him from seeing anything beyond the opening.

Actions?

Once the fire extinguishes, or at least diminishes enough to allow safe passage, Aristeides crosses the doorstep and joins Mateo and Lysander.

His xiphos strikes true and deep, hitting one of the already injured parts of the amorphous blob. It shudders and seems to flatten, the life fading out of it. A sigh of relief escapes Mateo's lips as he looks back at his friend, stepping closer to look over his wounds.

"You were badly burned my friend. It doesn't look like it was anything too permanent except..."" He would lean in closer for a moment before slapping the mighty soldier on the side of the head. "Jumping through fire? Is your might only countered by your dim-witted nature? Thankfully the creature choose to imitate the door; if it had taken your form its mind would've blanked out!" With his scolding done, the slightly smoldering warrior would sit beside his friend, looking at the ruined thing. "...well...I can't say much. I jumped in after you."

"The way is clear, the thing is dead!" Mateo shouts back up, hissing lightly as he moves his burnt elbow. Next time he'd let the godblooded burn, he lied to himself. Pushing himself up and off of the ground, he looked at the room ahead of them.

"The fight isn't over yet. Unless you're too tired now after being so heroic." Mateo teased, rolling his shoulders before getting back into the mindset that they were still in enemy territory.

Lysander grins as he stands back up and resettles his shield on his arm. "You know better than that. There's scores of dumb things I haven't tried yet."

When Aristeides starts down the stairs, Coronus sets the chest down and follows the scholar into the cavern.

He breathes deep when he reaches the open cavern inhaling the additional space more than anything else.

Do you want to short rest? Or should Coronus spend healing spells to heal Lysander? Healing potions?

The Exchange

Looks maybe too bright for stealth, but will if possible. Reminder Nov can do it in only light obscurement with Skulker.

Novyn crept forward along the wall, keeping her eyes peeled for danger.

Also, do we see the mimic corpse?
