Having been calmed down by Chulyin's ability to empathize with animals, the birds disperse. Many still circle over head, if not most, but they are definitely not looking hostile.
As he has gotten close, he does notice where their nests are.
Hero Point to Chulyin for non-murder-hobo solution!
Yaegren Goldflask
|
"Wonder what had them riled up. Hopefully it wasn't us," Yaegren says, taking surreptitiously his hand from his axe. "Can they talk back to you? That sort of perspective would work wonders in map-making."
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
Well, that's the first time in all the game systems with Wild Empathy that I've been able to use Wild Empathy.
"Yes. I wonder. Maybe there's a clue near their nests," Chulyin says, moving closer to investigate their nests. "I can only understand them on a primal level, naturally. I do have the capability to speak with them, but it requires the use of magic. It is something that I have to prepare for."
Nina Jaribu
|
"Aren't birds usually protective of their nests? I would think that we should do the exact opposite - route the path around where they would attack passers-by."
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
"Not that protective. Something may be amiss that we had best know about," Chulyin says. "Besides, the route is not marked by our footsteps. Better to document what creatures live where. However, we do need a way across this stream if you're afraid of the birds."
Junior Peppers

JR watches the flock disperse and seems pleased. "That went better than expected, great work crow talker Chulyin." A smile creeps into the sides of JR's mouth.
"So, cross the brook or continue skirting it? Lots of great herbs grow around brooks. Not to mention trout." A hungry growl erupts from the man's stomach on cue.
Nina Jaribu
|
"Unless there's a rush, why not do both? We'll see if something triggered the birds first, and then look for a place to cross?"
Nature +6, Survival +6
Chulyin the Spirit Talker

"I am not certain why you think we are not (other than the extemporaneousness of PbP)," Chulyin comments.
GM Silbeg

That should stick... Chulin Crow Talker :D
Survival to check out the raven's roost.
Nina survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Nina looks around, and notices some scuff marks on the trees, and flat footprints of what appears to be bipedal creatures. It is pretty clear that something disturbed their nests. While Nina checks that out, she finds that the birds have collected some shiny bauble, and that at least a few of them look to actually be worth something! Treasure Bundle!
The river itself merits some investigation, as it would definitely be an obstacle to any caravans. It can be swam across, but it is pretty swift moving, so, you can:
- Identify local wildlife (survival or nature)
- Identify local plant life (nature or herbalism)
- Chart the terrain (Cartography or Scribe Lore, Crafting)
- Find the best place to ford the stream (Nature, Hills, Mountains,
- Scouting Lore, or use Acrobatics for trial and error)
- Select a good location for a bridge (crafting)
Every body give me one of these checks, please
Nina Jaribu

Nina will look for a place to ford. (nature +6)
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
Considering that chulyin is Inuit for raven...
Chulyin takes time to scout the area around the stream and make notes on the nearby wildlife.
Nature (E): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Yaegren Goldflask

Yaegren walks back and forth along the river's bank. "I've helped build a bridge or two in my time. But I suppose I'll leave that for the Chelish, and give them some pointers instead."
Crafting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Very fitting Chulyin!
JR sets off to hunt up some of his favorite herbs and wild remedies. "If I find some good stuff they're super helpful in treating injuries. I'd be happy to provide any lessons if you wanted."
Herbalism Lore: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Natural Medicine: Prerequisites trained in Nature
You can apply natural cures to heal your allies. You can use Nature instead of Medicine to Treat Wounds. If you’re in the wilderness, you might have easier access to fresh ingredients, allowing you to gain a +2 circumstance bonus to your check to Treat Wounds using Nature, subject to the GM’s determination.
Ror’Ryk
|
Ryk will help out in any survival or scouting tasks if need be. If not then he will be on guard while the others do their tasks armed with his bow.
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Acrobatics for trial and error: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
GM Silbeg

All, also, please be specific about which task you are undertaking, and make only ONE check please.
Chulyin goes out and learns about the local wildlife... does not seem to be any dangerous predators around!
Yaegren finds what looks to be a good spot for a bridge
JR discovers that the site is safe for caravans to rest... no poisonous plants!
Going to take the nature roll for Ror'Ryk... but in future when a list is called for, choose only one, and be clear about which check you are making. Thank you.
Ror'Ryk contemplates fording the river using "barbarian trapfinding" methods, but then decides to use his knowledge of nature, and finds a fordable spot!
Nina, please choose a different check, and please make the roll... this is not a secret check
- Identify local wildlife (survival or nature)
- Identify local plant life (nature or herbalism)
- Chart the terrain (Cartography or Scribe Lore, Crafting)
- Find the best place to ford the stream (Nature, Hills, Mountains, Scouting Lore, or use Acrobatics for trial and error)
- Select a good location for a bridge (crafting)
- * NEW * Improvise a bridge (crafting, requires 2 50' lengths of rope, which are left here)
- * NEW * Move boulders to make the ford safer (Athletics)
Waiting on Nina to make a check, then others may go

Nina will chart the terrain.

JR is untrained in the rest of those with a +0 bonus. I'll pass on making any more checks.
"Oh man, why didn't someone remind me to bring some fishing equipment along." He looks at the swift river and heavy boulders and shakes his head. "I've got a climbing kit but I'm not sure its best to use it on a bridge, we'll probably be needing it later. Maybe you can just cut down some trees and drop them across?"
Nina Jaribu

Do you have any powers to move or alter the flow of water?
Junior Peppers

Do you have any powers to move or alter the flow of water?
Not at this point no. Just damage spells for the most part and healing.
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
"We would likely need more rope than that if we plan to make the beginnings of a bridge," Chulyin comments. "We might be able to move some of those rocks to make the ford that Roryk found easier to cross. I could help move them."
Yaegren Goldflask
|
Yaegren uneasily tries to improvise a bridge, shimmying along the edge of the water while he sets the ropes. "I dunno how long we should take on this," he calls over. "Cutting down trees and such might be for the building crews that come after."

Athletics, Animal Form: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Chulyin speaks a string of words infused with primal power while gesturing arcanely. His form becomes blurry and then expands into the form of a dark haired gorilla. He lifts a boulder and lumbers over to the ford to help shore it up alongside Ror'Ryk.
Nina Jaribu

Do I go again? Are there other options opened from charting the terrain?

Who has the second length of rope?
Looks like JR has a climbing kit, Nina has rope, and Ror'Ryk has rope.
The team has completed every task here that they can think of. No more new tasks opened.
Having found a safe place to camp and cross, the team moves on.
At this point, I will need everyone to make both an Athletics and Survival check, to show how well you are navigating the rough terrain, and foraging
Each of you must make the checks
Chulyin the Spirit Talker

Athletics (T): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Survival (T): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
"This is nice, compared to the Balgirdtrek," Chulyin comments as they trudge through the wilderness. "No, Nina? Not a single bear has attempted to rip our arms off nor is the weather so bad."

Athletics Untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Survival Trained: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
"Now I remember why I always stuck to the rivers and the lowlands... this mountain climbing stuff is hard work." He pauses for yet another break.
"I hate to say it, but damn, I'm outta shape."

Athletics (T): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Survival (T): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
"I learned to walk on such slopes. Trust me, this is nothing to a dwarf," Yaegren says, just before nature enforces its karmic balance. The dwarf comically trips on something and lands hard. He stays mostly quiet after that, putting extra attention to the task of foraging.
Nina Jaribu

Nina will give up her rope for the bridge.
Athletics: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4

"For some reason it was easier for me to navigate through the snow than these woods!"
Embarassing, especially since she picked up a druid dedication between adventures!

Looks like we're just waiting on Ror'Ryk. Of course, the assumption is posting once per day, not many times per day :D
Ror’Ryk

apologies, work has been hectic with folks out sick
Athletics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
As good as the warrior does with his negotiating of the rough terrain, looking nimble on his feet, he messes up simple foraging tasks
GM Silbeg

The team struggles a bit in navigating the terrain. However, no major mishaps happen. After several more days of travel, you move out of the mountain forest, cross the tree line, and approach the snow line. You realize that without cover from the trees, the freezing temperatures will soon turn deadly, requiring heavy winter clothing, or the endure elements spell.
I assume you all put on the winter clothing you have received
You have been traveling upward and approach a wide valley that’s a clear pass over the mountain range. You come to an area where the wind has built up the snow over a layer of scree, which looks particularly hazardous.
Athletics check to climb up the slope, please, and/or describe how you would like to approach this climb.
Nina Jaribu
|
Can we intentionally collapse it?
GM Silbeg
|
The only paths you can see are up the snow and scree, and go up for several hundred feet.
You can give me a survival or mountain lore check, if you want
Nina Jaribu
|
To see if we can collapse it safely:
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Junior Peppers

"I can't say I'm as enthusiastic about this endeavor as I originally was. This is cold, miserable, tiring work." JR stops to catch his breath and look at the beauty before him, at least before he starts swearing at the difficulty again.
Survival: Best way to proceed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Yaegren Goldflask
|
"Cheer up, it won't be more than a few weeks," Yaegren says, loud enough to be heard over the din, but not enough to disturb the ground.
The dwarf then lends his eyes to Nina's endeavor. "I suppose this is better than knocking it down while we walk over it."
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Chulyin the Spirit Talker

Chulyin considers the slope and ponders a safe way upward.
Survival (T): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Ror’Ryk

Ryk sees Nina eyeing the slope and understands her thinking, he too checks the area out to see if he can help decide the best course of action to follow...
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
and not seeing anything that is helpful but not wanting to appear to be confused Ryk picks a random spot along the slope and suggests that way hoping the others do not notice is lack of terrain awareness...then he stands back and guards the others with his bow hoping to stay out of the way and not further complicate the situation...
what a horrible roll
GM Silbeg

While you are pretty sure that you coudl knock down the scree, the real problem here is that you are below it, and it would likely fall down upon yourselves. Ror'Ryk doesn't think that this would be an issue, as it would all fall down around you.
Nina notices that there are multiple paths you could take up the mountain side, should you want to split up into multiple groups to have less risk of triggering an avalanche.
Nina Jaribu
|
"Let's split up and climb."
Yaegren Goldflask
|
"I say we pair off. One good climber and one elf to each group." Yaegren chuckles, pulling out two brews. He hands one to each designated "weak" climber in the other two groups. "Worry not, you'll do fine. I got nothing to make it easier, sorry, just drinks for the aftermath."
No bestial mutagens, but I'll dole out my two minor elixirs of life.
Junior Peppers
|
JR is about to protest the dig from Yaegren, but he's right. "Yes, pairs would be good. Let me get on some of my climbing gear and maybe we can join our ropes up just in case?"
He refuses the brew "I can heal myself if needed. If I'm unconscious just feed it to me please."
+0 Athletics isn't great for this scenario! Not sure this climb is steep enough for most of the kit's usefulness, but it could probably help with the crampons maybe, and the rope.
his satchel includes 50 feet of rope, pulleys, a dozen pitons, a hammer, a grappling hook, and one set of crampons. Climbing kits allow you to attach yourself to the wall you’re Climbing, moving half as quickly as usual (minimum 5 feet) but letting you attempt a DC 5 flat check whenever you critically fail to prevent a fall. You gain a +1 item bonus to Athletics checks to Climb while using an extreme climbing kit. A single kit has only enough materials for one climber; each climber needs their own kit.
Nina Jaribu
|
Nina feels left out, as she's neither a good climber nor does she have elf heritage. She pulls out her climbing kit.
"Do the good climbers want to head up first, and then use a rope to help us up?"
GM Silbeg
|
Just need to know who the pairs are, and how you are handling the climbs.
You know that it will be easier to climb if you tether team members together. +1 circumstance bonus
Also, anyone left at the bottom if an avalanche triggers will take the same damage as those falling from above.
Nina Jaribu
|
"I don't think it'll matter who's at the top and who's at the bottom, if this landslide goes off, we'll all take the same damage. But we should pair up."
What kind of check is it to climb? Athletics? And someone pair up with Chulyin's companion, or do Chulyin and his companion need to go together?
Chulyin the Spirit Talker
|
"We will take that path," Chulyin says indicating one of the routes up the unstable hillside. "But give me a moment to make a note of this problem and our thoughts on solutions."
The Sarkorian quickly jots down notes in his journal before stowing it back in his pack. He and the jaguar wait for the others to choose their paths before beginning their ascent.
Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Athletics (Cat): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Yaegren Goldflask
|
"Here, JR, you're with me," Yaegren grins. "Glad each group has at least one climber and someone to patch us up."
Once JR is ready, the dwarf ties them together and starts making his way up.
Athletics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Nina Jaribu
|
Nina will pair up with Ror'Ryk.
Athletics: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
