Diplomacy +8, I'm assuming you're making secret checks offline. I wanted to make sure you knew that, despite the hints of violence, Nina is trying Diplomacy to Make an Impression. At some point, if things become more hostile, she will be using Intimidation (+8) to Coerce, but not yet.

While the others drink the hard stuff, JR breaks out some ration snacks in an attempt to keep everyone semi sober and in a good mood. "Been camped here long?" He asks.

Bad things would happen if JR got into the sauce, I'll leave it to the others for now.

I'd petition to make this less black boxy. Nina's actively engaged in conversation with them. Do they expect her to drink with them? Can she roll Perception to gauge their reactions? If she declines at first, do they insist? I don't think the roleplay on this should be skipped.

The default answer is no - Nina's Fortitude is her weakest save. But she should be able to gauge whether 40% of the party opting out is a disappointment to thr orcs - or at least have some opportunity to tell.

Ryk downs his drink without a problem, and so does Yaegren.

Grakcha, the orc woman, looks at both JR and Nina as she slams down her gin, coughing just a little. "You gonna drink, or just sit there?" She nods her head, smiling, at Ryk and Yaegren's attempt.

I am not saying JR should drink, but this is what you notice.

After a little goading the entire team decides to try the Urglin gin. Chulyin and JR both find it a bit harsh for their tastes, and their stomachs. Neither are able to get it down, considering how much it burns their throats. What little does make it down, doesn't stay their long. Grakcha laughs, saying how the "weaker races" cannot handle their drinks, winking at Yaegrin and Ryk.

Nina hesitates at first, and finally does try it. This stuff is definitely strong, and as harsh as her pickle juice on a bad day, but she chokes it down. This earns her a healthy smack on the back, as the orcish chief seems to accept her sacrifice.

Once the team has drained the bottle, and start in one some of the orcish spirits, Grakcha seems to have grown far more friendly.

"So, there we were, minding out own business, in our little cave. Then this ogre comes along, kills a few of my guards, and takes over our home as his own. The filthy giant kicks us out, warning that he will kill any of us that he sees.

"Between this, and warding off other orc tribes in the area, we are in pretty sorry shape. So, if you lot are able to head in and liberate our home, you will have the support of the Shattered Fang tribe in establishing your caravan route. Of course this is contingent on us being able to profit from the caravans ourselves. Do we have a deal?"

"Yes, sounds great," she chokes out while she struggles to retain some dignity - and balance.

"Does the ogre want shomething ... something? Can we reason with it?"

"You're welcome to profit from the caravans but not to extort them," Nina warns. "Remember, if we can get rid of the ogre that got rid of you, we can enforce this agreement."

She offers her hand.

"We'll head out as soon as the ground stops rocking back and forth."

"And what's the deal with the other orcs? They don't sound as friendly you. Their loss. Perhaps you'd like them talked to, or dealt with as well?"

Chulyin coughs a few times to clear his throat. When he speaks, he is hoarse. "Yes. We can help you with this."

It goes down and it comes up. JR's stomach is like a really short roller coaster. All he can do is spit it up into the bushes and mutter a quick "Nope." Wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his coat, then rinsing his mouth out with water.

"There's a reason Elves stick to wine and ales, and I think I just found it." He mutters back, settling in as 'negotiations' transpire between the expert drinkers.

Perception: Sense Motive +4, make sure this is legit and not a death sentence.

"How many ogres are we talking about here?" Man I wish I knew more about ogres...

"Don't worry about the other orcs." she says. "We can handle them. Once we have our stronghold back, we'll be able to call back our patrols."

JR:

You believe she is telling the truth, that she will honor the agreement.
Remember what you know about the Shattered Fang orcs.

"The ogre started attacking us several weeks ago. It was too strong for us, and killed several of the tribe. We did not have enough numbers to overcome the beast. As far as I know there is only the one. I do not think it is one that plays well with others."

She says something in orcish, and one of her warriors runs off on an errand.

You notice that many of the orcs here are wounded, and that they are lacking a lot of gear. In particular, you only see three orcs that would be formidable combatants, and all but Grakcha are wounded still.

The other orc comes back, handing a sack to Grakcha. "It is not much, my new friends, but it is all we have. Please, use these trinkets to hel defeat the ogre, that my people can return home."

In the satchel are two minor hearling potions and a lesser tanglefoot bag, She removes the twisted leather braid from her neck, and you see a beautiful pendant of a crying angel.

"If you do this, you will have the Shattered Fang as your friends. Thank you."

The orcs bring out a meager feast, mostly small game and forest tubers, as well as their own backwoods whiskeys. "Stay with us tonight, and share our fire. The ogre hunts at night, so perhaps if you leave in the morning, you can catch him off guard."

Man I hope these guys don't bully the smiling tusks and their pet birds... Best we steer clear of orcish politics though.

"We have no interest in fighting an ogre in the darkness. Your offer sounds fair, count me in, so long as I don't have to drink more of that stomach melting gin!" He chuckles, an honest, good natured laugh.

"I can help with wounds also, if you prefer the more herbal remedy route."

The team spends the night helping out the orcs. It does seem that they have not faired well as of late, having lost their healer to the ogre. By morning they are looking much better!

At night, Nina will spend some time listening to the orcs. She will ask them about the aspects of their culture as a whole and strengths as a tribe.

Assuming we are successful and friendly with the orcs at the end of the adventure, Nina will spend her downtime back here, creating orc dances and teaching them about human manners/expectations so that they can peacefully share their culture with passers-by.

This has little mechanical bearing on the scenario, I am just trying to tie Nina's Downtime with the adventure for my own amusement.

In the morning, Nina wakes up and prays to Iomedae.

"Let's go," she says, after breakfast.

Is she teaching orcs to dance? Or are they fighting.. its hard to tell exactly... either way it makes me a bit nervous... JR keeps his distance from the mosh pit developing in the camp, instead doing what he can to show any interested orcs herbs that help the healing process.

The next morning he's packed and ready to leave as soon as the others are. Orcs make him nervous. "Yup, let's find us an ogre.. lovely."

Following Grakcha's directions, you easily find your way to the cave. Just outside the cave's entrance are several animal carcasses, which have attracted large swarms of black flies. The stench is only just bearable.

The ceilings are 15' high in the chambers, and 10' high in the corridors.
The light is dim throughout (enough for darkvision and low-light vision, but not enough without).

The smell in this low‐ceilinged chamber is nearly suffocating. The stench of rotten meat wafts in from outside, and the smell of excrement comes in through the tunnel to the north. Shelves and racks that once held equipment now lie smashed on the ground. Other tunnels exit to the west and south.

Yaegren mixes up his usual assortment of brews. Expecting more blows to the head today, he holds a juggernaut mutagen in the hand not occupied by his axe. The dwarf also reminds everyone of the elixirs they found after fighting Odvar.

Now in the cave proper, he becomes even less stealthy as he breathes through his mouth, peering up the western path while preparing to plumb its depths.

JR covers his mouth and nose with a wet piece of cloth, swearing in Elven as it doesn't seem to really help "Good gods, its either dead and rotted or it doesn't have a sense of smell... let's hope for the first." He plods along in the rear of the line with quarterstaff in one hand.

I thought JR was in the middle. If he's in the back, Nina will spam Detect Magic instead. If Nina is in the back, she'll spam Shield.

I didn't realize tbat. I thought Repeat a Spell was a legit activity. I guess Nina will just Search then, no matter where she is.

JR, it's up to you, since you're the most physically vulnerable. If we get ambushed from the rear, Nina has an extra level's worth of HP and AC.

Not 100% sure the time it takes now to identify something, but I assume it still requires casting detect magic so I'll wait for now.

I think I answered my own question. It looks like Detect Magic isn't Repeat a Spell, but its own exploration activity, so the 10 minute limit doesn't apply? Weird, but whatever. Nina will spam Detect Magic.

10 minutes, and you have to be trained in the school of magic that it is, e.g., Arcana for arcane magic, Nature for primal magic, etc. This came up in a VTT game last night where somehow we ended up with a group where nobody was trained in Religion. :\
