Is the yellow just the shallow bog or is it also the yellow mist that we think cause disease and is being emitted by the plagueborn? Does there appear to be anything on the trees causing the milky white film on them? A pulsing pustule or such?

Tanbu looks at the white trees.

Lyrio hears his colleagues, and quick moves sideways with Radagosa, keeping some distance between them and the companions. As he starts to check for ranged weapons or tools, he pronounces magic words and touches himself. He commands Radagosa to move West if it's threatened by the swarm.

Lyrio moves and casts barkskin for AC+2. Radagosa moves with him, stays on the distance he points, and readies an action to move West in case one of the swarms tries to share the square with her.

Night of the Gray Death

Lyrio I was about to object to such a complex command, but I remembered you have "speak with lions" up and that Radagosa has an increased intelligence, so you're good!

Tanbu sinks an arrow into the approaching plagueborn, his poorly aimed shot still able to graze the unthinking ooze, while Lyrio casts a protective spell and talks to Radagosa in their own feline language.

For their part the oozes move slowly but inexorably out of the muck toward the Pathfinders. As they approach Zailus and Gillie the fine mist that surrounds them starts to surround them. It smells faintly of rotten eggs.

Zailus and Gillie both need to make a fortitude save against disease

Sorry Gillie that was my mistake. You recognise the swarms as plagueborn swarms, smaller versions of the larger ooze. Being bitten or being next to one can cause disease, and they are resistant to acid but vulnerable to fire. I also forgot one other thing:

After Eldrin destroyed the first swarm, the slick mass coating the nearest tree started to pulse and writhe in a most disconcerting manner.

DC 17 Knowledge (dungeoneering), Knowledge (nature) or Perception:
The tree appears to be trying to give birth to another ooze. Any fire damage done to the tree will delay this process (even being hit with a torch), and enough will permanently put an end to that trees capacity to create them

Anyone can make this check even if it's not your turn

Gillie steps back from the ooze that had approached him and throws another bomb at an approaching swarm. This one also strikes true, but this time the fire catches and burns away the constituent blobs much as Eldrin's flames did, destroying the blue ooze.

Almost as soon as it does however, another tree starts to pulse and writhe. Tanbu misses the ooze, but not by much. He prepares

I've marked the writhing trees on the map by inverting them

Night of the Gray Death

GM screen:
r: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (19) - 5 = 14

Yes we can retcon that Gillie as you ought to have know about the trees when you took your turn. I've updated the map to hopefully be clearer. There are 5 trees numbered 1 to 5, and currently only number one is pulsing and writhing. I inverted its colour to make it even clearer. Black on white trees = normal, white on black = creating an ooze

Gillie is about to target the blue swarm but changes his mind at the last second as he suddenly realises that the true threat is the trees and throws at that instead, just hitting and burning away some of the milky filth. Some of the splash even goes on the swarm that's next to the tree. The tree is pulsing much slower now, it looks like it might take another minute to complete the birthing process. Gillie thinks that another blast like that ought to be enough to destroy it.

Night of the Gray Death

Zailus takes a deep breath and steps in to strike the larger ooze that has moved up to threaten her and her allies, striking it square and carving a large chunk of it off.

Holding your breath gives you a 50% chance to avoid having to make a fort save against the mist surrounding them. If you'd like to roll it yourself that's a d100 and 1-50 means you don't need to make the save

Zailus looks at the trees and frowns in digust. "Shelyn's Love! I'm going to have to climb into that damnable muck, am I not? Ugh, If I colaspe of something, someone heal me up please!"

She then hoists her dress up to around her upper thighs, showing she hasn't been shaving on the trip, and then slowly plods trough the muck to be in a proper position to use her innate passionate fire to burn them down. "I've got these two, someone get the other trees!"

Assuming something doesn't stop her, Zailus will use her burning hands on the two trees in front of her next round.

Tanbu tree 2 is 45 feet away from you, but as tree 1 is 35. I'll assume you mean tree 1, but let me know if that's not right

Eldrin and Lyrio take the brunt of the explosion, while Zailus and Gillie are able to dodge out of the way of most of it. Tanbu throws an alchemists fire at the nearest tree and scores a direct hit, dousing it with flames which continue to burn.

You still need an attack roll Gillie in case you roll a 1 in which case it will definitely go somewhere else. The rules are a little unclear on targeting empty squares. Aiming at an intersection is AC 5 so I'll go with that. The trees do not appear to attempt reflex saves :)

Gillie bomb at empty square, range: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 2 = 24

Gillie adds more fire to the fight, throwing a bomb to target two of the trees Tree one and two and splashing them both, which causes the southern-most one to slow down its writhing to match that of the first one. Tree one has taken so much fire damage that it looks very close to "death".

Zailus hoists up her skirt and trudges into the mire. It is truly repugnant, black mud with the consistency of porridge, occasionally belching forth fetid yellow gas and slapping back together with an audible clap. It's slow going but she's able to get up to the most burnt of the trees and examine it from up close. Even through the stench of the mud the tree's odour is overwhelming, it's vile putrescence not something to be forgotten soon.

With no apparent threats remaining, the only question is if the party can burn the infected trees before they birth any more monstrosities.

The map got a little messed up this morning, Gillie and Eldrin you've both moved into the difficult terrain (even though you might have thought you hadn't), so I've updated your positions based on how far you could have gotten

Zailus destroys the tree adjacent to her, fully burning away its foulness. The one beyond that even gets a solid taste of fire and looks rather worse for wear. Meanwhile Gillie throws a bomb at the westernmost tree and hits it squarely, slowing its birthing process and dealing a considerable amount of damage to it, while eldrin trudges through the mud

Night of the Gray Death

The Armenian man and Tanbu both throw their alchemist's fires at trees, with Tanbu having more luck despite Magdh's blessing. Tanbu strikes true and burns the tree, slowing down its writhing, while The Armenian Man's falls well short.

In the minutes that follow, the Pathfinders are able to kindle enough fire to put an end to the remaining trees before they birth any more monstrosities, and having done so it becomes clear to everyone that the source of the corruption here is no more. Even though it is still a soggy mess, the true foulness must have been contained in the trees, because now they are burned to ash the place feels so much cleaner.

Combat Over!

While technically you do need to do 10 points of fire damage to each tree to destroy them, doing even 1 point of damage slows them down for a minute, so you had another 13 rounds of actions before anything else would have happened, so I'm happy to say you'll be able to finish those those trees off, even if it's just by sparking kindling around them!

Looking around the area to confirm that the blight is truly destroyed, you come across an old rusted chest. The lock is rusted closed, but a bit of hacking will open it up to reveal some treaure:

We could head for the original town, get Melket and have her come with us to meet Dolok and reconcile it all. We could then get all the stories and history we need and it would be fastest for cures to disease (maybe?). If we just head towards Dolok's place, we head for our cave of last night and then see what tomorrow brings. If it is disease afoot, we head for town fast. If no disease, then we go tell Dolok we did not and hear his information. I don't know but our current location may to directly away from the original town and Dolok's village and we have to pass through the broken village anyway.

"Back to the cave then? We can determine a better course tomorrow." "Or do we rush back to town and look for a priest?"

Zailus grabs up the cape, almost before The Armenian Man gets a chance to examine the garment. "This doesn't work with my clothes, but I will NEVER give up the chance to accessorize! And just look at how the silver flows, so majestic. I knew I needed my silver bodysuit. I knew it. Why didn't I pack it? Argh!"
