Four Flavors of Heaven
"Every eighty-eight years, the Celestial Court graces Yuanzi with their presence. As their Garden on the mortal realm, it gives them great joy to visit their handiwork and mingle with those who reside there.
During the sixteen days of their visit, they challenge any mortal with a contest of wit, skill, and courage. Winners are granted a most auspicious gift; a touch of divinity. This blessing grants longevity, strength, and wisdom and when the gift-bearer is ready, it also grants them a place at the Celestial Court's side as their champion.
For nigh eighty-eight years, Old Soeji has bemoaned losing the previous competition. Now in his early hundreds, he's convened his friends, family, and anyone he knows who he thinks might even be remotely interested in succeeding where he failed so many years ago. Whatever the Court's challenge, Soeji is ready to put his heart and soul into making sure he is a part of the winning team.
Amid the raucous celebration that accompanies the sixteen-day challenge, the players will face challenges both mundane supernatural, make friends and foes, and discover what belief truly guides their heart.
Concept
In Four Flavors of Heaven, the PCs will journey across the micro-setting of Yuanzi. As the Celestial Court's Garden, the world draws heavy inspiration from Asian mythology, geography, and themes.
As friends, family, pupils, or simply acquaintances of Old Soeji, the PCs will aim to succeed where their sponsor failed 88 years ago. They will travel the breadth and length of Yuanzi to complete the task put before them.
Expectations
Character Creation
Background Lore
For the purpose of designing your characters, I have included some preliminary information on the setting. Feel free to ask for more advice.
Yuanzi: Setting name for the world. It is essentially the Celestial Court’s garden, crafted long ago and now left to blossom and be shaped by mortal hands. Yuanzi is a large island nation.
Settlements
Major Landmarks
The Celestial Court
The Celestial Host is composed of the five creator deities who formed Yuanzi. Each is associated with an aspect needed to maintain their garden and is represented by a different creature.

Are we using traits/drawbacks? If yes, how many traits do you want us to have? How many drawbacks can we have? I may also be leaning toward samurai instead of fighter...
Montreal is a beautiful city. I think I'm going to go to those gardens next time I go.
Two traits, as per the norm. No drawbacks. I can't update the first post, and I always forget to mention this so hopefully I'll be able to refer this to people here.

| The Archlich |
Hey GM! Archlich back here. Here's what I came out with (more details to develop as I better understand the setting):
Xi Fong is a young vigilante that, at nights, assumes the identity of Huli Jing. As a Kitsune, his shapeshifting abilities are extremely handy for such activities, but some believe he's blessed by the Kami themselves.
The young adventurer was adopted still young by a family of farmers, who don't know his true heritage and race. He still lives humbly with them - father, mother, and siblings - on their rice farm on the outskirts of Qiao.
Xi Fong was raised playing in the large bamboo forests and is very agile and skilled. At 17 years old, he also has a (super)natural charm, which makes him not too shy when dealing with the other teenagers. He isn't a troublemaker for the local law enforcement, but he's not the most polite around.
As a vigilante he lets his true chaotic side out. He usually assumes his full kitsune look (sometimes varying to pure fox, and when infiltrating, Human) and usually tries to seek justice for the local issues of his small village. He's good hearted and naive, but knows how to play dirty when needed.

So...what’s the endgame plan? Assuming we win, do we ascend to divinity and that’s it, or continue playing as the gods’ troubleshooter, something else entirely?
Ascending to divinity is one of the possible endings for your character. If you succeed and win, each character will get to choose how their personal story ends.
When we finish, I will either run a new module sized adventure or perhaps run a second group through the module for more feedback.

Farukon Sora, grew up in Piaofeng in the Farukon family. As a young child he remembers playing alongside the cliffs of the mountains, watching the mountain goats hop along the sheer earth and the birds of prey fly he dreamed of one day moving as agilely as them. When he came of age, Farukon became disillusioned with his position as the youngest of the Farukon’s and wanted more for his life and against the great familial bonds of Yuanzi, Farukon Sora left for Shuisang to become a sailor. He wanted to see the world more than he wanted to please his family, a fact that has essentially ostracized him from his family.
It is on the sea that he learned not only the sailors life but began training in firearms (is this a new thing? Is it established?). He quickly became accustomed to it and began combining his agile mountain climbing youth with this new form of combat, creating a style never seen before.
I would like to know more about Old Soeji as well to incorporate that better into the backstory. This is a super cool setting and I must admit my ulterior motive in potentially joining this is because I am also developing a asian themed fantasy setting and I’m interested to see what others are up to.
Cheers!

I'm working on the backstory now. What do we know of Old Soeji? Is he human? Where does he live?
Is it alright if Shiro is related to him (I assume one of many grandchildren)?
Old Soeji is a cranky, venerable human male. He currently lives in a ramshackle house on the Lower Tier of Xin. He's spent the better part of the last eighty-eight years planning for the next Celestial Court's arrival.
He is 110 years old, so he has dozens of descendants, hundreds of friends, and almost everyone has met or heard of him by now.
He's hoarded every tidbit of lore or information that could be of use in his cluttered house and is ready to win this challenge once and for all.

Firearms are totally fine. Gun-fu is more than welcome and would be a traditional weapon at this point. It's not brand new, but it's not exactly commonplace either (emerging, same as PF). Fireworks, firearms, and gunpowder are available in Xin, Shuishang, and Piaofeng.
See above for more information on the old man.

Alright! here's Shiro's story, hopefully it fits into the setting.
The “Masked Boy” was awkward with others at first but eventually came to be accepted amongst the farming community. He was even sweet on one of the girls. They would play together often and seemed to be inseparable. One day though, in private, she asked him to take off the mask. Despite his father’s words, Shiro did so revealing his face for the first time. She screamed and ran, believing him to be some form of undead, like the rumors from so long ago. Shiro, heart broken, ran away from home.
As he ran, the young boy came across an old man on the road. Unbeknownst to Shiro, Old Soeji had finally come to see his grandson for the first time. The old man smiled and asked ”Why are you crying, little boy?”. The crying boy told Soeji his story and the old man dried his tears, giving him a hug. ”They are just afraid, Shiro.” the old man said. ”It’s not you who is wrong. Your appearance is only a small part of who you are. Your heart is what matters.” The young boy had calmed and was struck by Soeji’s words. Together the two of them returned to the Heida farm where Old Soeji was treated to a farmer’s feast.
Shiro tried to continue his life amongst the farming village, but it was difficult for him. Eventually he took on the job of a courier, hoping to visit Old Soeji in Xin. Throughout his early teens, the young Shiro would travel all over Yuanzi, meeting people and getting a lay of the land. So long as the mask remained on, Shiro was actually fairly popular especially with the poorer folk. Eventually, the teenage Shiro was picked up by a cell of imperial agents, recruiting him to act as a spy. He was assigned to Xin, where he would listen in on dissidents and criminals.
He would visit Old Soeji on occasion, though the old man was typically busy with the more prominent members of his family. However, when Shiro first joined the imperials, his grandfather got him a special present. The dog “Gou”. Gou was a loyal dog and was unafraid of his master’s appearance, much to Shiro’s delight. Him and his dog were never very far apart a since then. Still, it came as a surprise when Old Soeji called him to participate in the Celestial Challenge.

Appearance and Personality
Lung is a tall, imposing youth, already having grown a bit of a wispy mustache and goatee. His eyes are piercing, and appear to flash when he witnesses a celestial injustice that would dishonor The Celestial Court or Their earthly subjects, down to the lowliest beast. He carries a sizeable scroll in an iron cover, containing the holy writings of Jinyan. He smells, not unpleasantly, of ink and hay, reflecting his predeliction for plopping down in the nearest field or haystack to write down his observations or transcribe a book. It is at these times that he is most peaceful.
Background
Lung, the third child of his family, was sent to the ancient Yinxu Monastery to study the teachings of Jinyan, the Dragon of the Heavens. He proved to be a heady intellectual student, throwing himself into academic study and calligraphy, and did not appear to have much in the way of martial aptitude, nor a desire to become a healer. His teachers were perplexed, until Mistress Librarian Weifang suggested he study in the way of the Iron Scroll—an esoteric technique that combined reading with combat. Lung took to it with a fervent zeal, and studied under Weifang and other teachers, and found that his intense reading had garnered him the Dragon’s Stare as well—the ability to invisibly bruise an opponent from afar merely by looking at them.
Lung would have happily remained in the libraries and high oxen fields of Piaofeng, if Mistress Librarian had not come to him with a task. ”You are one of our finest students, Lung Shanyang. My former teacher’s teacher, Old Soeji, has requested my recommendation to represent him in a competition. I have chosen you. You are to pack your bags and go to Soeji at once.”
Lung looked up from his writing, bits of hay in his hair, startled. ”Me? But…I…I mean…yes! I shall do as you say, Mistress Librarian Weifang. I will do my best to live up to your expectations.” Lung sprang to his feet and bowed to his mentor, and ran off to fetch his things.

I am curious about what the common folk know. Do they understand the Celestial Court and its workings? The government and everyone elected and what they do? Do they know about the ringing of bells to go into the spirit world? Trade? The distance of travel in the world? Or is it just the simple poor farmer is more concerned with his field and what the leaders of his thorp/city/village tell him to believe? Is there much corruption?

Aw shucks, thanks! I saw the other great submissions and felt challenged!
I wanted to try something different than the usual wizard types I've been playing lately...and the Intimidate stacking started to look better and better...and being able to become 'Master of the Iron Scroll' is so wonderfully bad kung-fu movie, even though it's not a really optimal weapon by any means.
Also, Smooshed, I'm pretty sure I've only seen the word "thorp" in the original Dungeon Master's Guide. Are you old like me? :D

Everything in the Setting Guide is common knowledge. There is no real corruption, primarily because the Gods have a habit of descending regularly enough.
There is, and always will be some, as well as crime, but not to a high extent.
People tend to live a little different when the creators of your world have a tendency to come visit every now and then.

Wow, what a neat world guide! I take it people aren't very fecund, thanks to some sort of um, "gardening" by the Court.
A bit of that, and a bit of "some people spiritually ascend from time to time before they grow old."
EDIT: Also thanks for the kind words about the guide. It provides a lot of much needed grounding for me, and hopefully for the players too.

I'm probably older than some, yes. I also enjoy history, which refers to thorps more often, and I think I learned it there, but may have seen it in a Dungeon Master's Guide as well--for city sizes.Everything in the Setting Guide is common knowledge.
