Please Dot in with an entrance post.

Your group has been summoned for a very important meeting.

Venture-Captain Amara Li is waiting in a well-maintained private garden behind a house on a quiet street in Ramparassad, the capital city of Dtang Ma, a nation in eastern Tian Xia.

There are chairs enough for each of you and a servant pour each of you tea as you arrive.

Kahwen has made a point of being on time for this meeting. So much of a point that he is actually early.

It was a requirement, however as he could easily have lost himself in the wonders of this place. Though he was born and raised in the Shackles, he firmly believes that his people originally came from this distant land. He's even heard rumors that there is a whole nation of Tengus somewhere in Tian Xia, though he was disappointed to find that this was not it.

Still, when he heard the Pathfinders had need of agents here, he was quick to sign on.

Since arriving, he's been wandering, largely aimlessly through the city, taking in all the sights and wonders.

But now, the bright-eyed, quick-motioned tengu takes a seat and a cup of tea. He drinks from the cup with his pinkie finger extended because he's sure that's the way you drink tea in high society.

While wandering the city, Kahwen came across an old woman sitting on a mat in the market who told fortunes by tossing a bag of small bones. Not sure why the Tengu stopped for a moment. The fortune teller voice cackled as she threw the bones "Ah, an adventurer! Danger follows your path like night follows day! Take all precautions and prepared for the worst only then will you find safety!" As Kahwen ponders the old woman's words he is distracted by a momentary market place disruption draws his attention away. when he looks back the old woman, mat and bones are gone.

Later having arrived first, VC Amara Li smiles at the Tengu as tea is poured for him, "Thank you Kahwen for coming on such short notice. I will explain the purpose of the meeting after the other arrives."

A dark cloaked dude stays hidden among the shadows and foliage of the private garden, observing Amara Li from a distance. Recently back from a mission a fiery plane, he has found his first venture to Tian Xia equally strange. Seeing a familiar face, the rogue steps forth from the shadows, pulling back the hood from his cloak to reveal dark wavy hair and a face with sharp Elven features. He bows deeply to Amara, saying, ”Greetings m’Lady, Daedîn at your service.”

He nods to the Tengu. ”Kahwen...looks like we’ll be sharing another adventure in a strange land...”

Starling steps inside the private garden. She wanders around a bit, looking at the plants and flowers, humming to herself. After a few moments, she pulls out her lute and gently strokes its strings, singing a quiet song along. She then turns to Daedin and Kahwen, nods and smiles.

Wow. I thought I was doing good with a +16 Stealth bonus.

Kahwen did not even know Daedin was there until he announced himself. The Tengu was in the motion of taking another sip of tea. The surprise of hearing the man's voice causes him to throw the cup in the air, sending tea everywhere, including on himself.

He spins, drawing his sword. He recognizes Daedin a moment later, though, fast enough the cup is still falling. He makes a hands free cartwheel to close the distance and catches it before it hits the ground.

Setting it on a nearby table, he makes his traditional bow to Daedin, his free hand over his chest, his sword held put parallel to the ground as he lowers his torso to the same angle.

He hears the lute music coming from another direction and turns and gives Starling a bow as well.

"Friend Daedin! Friend Starling! So nice to see you both again! I am pleased that we will be working again."

Any sign of poise he might have is betrayed by the fact that all of his feathers are still standing on edge, making him seem half again as large as normal.

The Grippli looks quite strange as the right half of his face is completely burnt and this part of his face looks like black coal!

On top of the Grippli’s head you see the bones of a tiny animal which has been fixed like a crown or crude helmet to his head.

The medium sized bird is a Roc and its beak is hooked like an eagle’s and designed for slashing and tearing. The bird’s feathers appear black currently but seem to change colours.

Prior to the meeting, your faction leaders communicate additional instructions.

Grand Lodge mission (Kahwen, Daedîn, Starling):

Pathfinder,
In the past, I have expressed skepticism of Amara Li’s push to expand the Pathfinder Society’s activities into Tian Xia, but it seems her efforts are finally coming to a head in a way that will greatly benefit the Society. As a result, her mission is your mission. Do everything in your power to ensure Amara’s negotiations with the Way of the Kirin conclude successfully, follow her instructions closely, and ensure that any enemies that threaten the mission are soundly defeated.
Yours in loyalty, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin

Silver Crusade mission (Aaftaab):
Righteous Pathfinder,
Kirin are noble and majestic creatures of the clouds, and I am most interested in an organization that seeks to emulate these creatures. While you are meeting with the representative of the Way of the Kirin, establish a good rapport with him and explain the mission of the Silver Crusade in the Society. Get him to agree to meet with me in the near future so that we might discuss our common interests.
Truth and honor, Ollysta Zadrian

Scarab Sages mission (Feybella):
Servant of the Ruby Prince,
The Ruby Prince’s condition has stabilized, but he remains weak. Nonetheless, our best physicians are optimistic that in time they might banish this affliction.
Before the fall of the Lung Wa Dynasty, the Way of the Kirin was known to have extensive libraries. The Way of the Kirin is a shadow of its former self, but perhaps some of their libraries survive. See if they still exist and if so, try and secure access to these libraries for agents of the Ruby Prince. An exchange of knowledge between our cultures should be mutually beneficial, and perhaps in their foreign libraries, we shall find insight into the curse that has befallen our prince.

As Daedîn approaches the private garden he spots a young person outside who trying to be inconspicuous and seems to be taking a keen interest in the comings and goings at the Venture-Captain’s residence.

Amara Li seems unsurprised at Daedîn’s sudden appearance ether she hides her surprise well or she knew you were there, she smiles "Welcome master Daedîn, your skill at moving unseen is quite impressive. Tea?”

No sooner does Daedîn sits and is poured tea, then the soothing sounds of a lute proceed the arrival of Starling. Amara smiles "Beautifully played my dear, from your excellent skill with music you must be Starling the Swift. Your reputation precedes you.”

Having arrived via the front door, a servant leads both Aaftaab and Feybella to the private garden where Venture-Captain Amara Li and the others already await.

Once everyone is seated and has had an opportunity to enjoy tea VC Amara Li begins. “When first I arrived in Absalom two years ago, I had a simple but nuanced mission: to increase communication and sharing of resources between the Pathfinder Society and its counterpart in Tian Xia by establishing the Lantern Lodge’s position on the other side of the world.”

She pauses briefly to sip her tea, before adding, “More than a year ago we successfully purchased and restored the house known as Hinojai, which was once a base for the Way of the Kirin. When we acquired Hinojai, it was as much a gambit to attract the attention of the remaining agents of the Way of the Kirin as it was an opportune acquisition of real estate. And indeed, a man claiming to be an agent of the Way recently contacted me by leaving me a message here.”

“Although the Way of the Kirin fell into ruin with the fall of Lung Wa a century ago, its far-reaching resources remain valuable, and it still commands great respect. If the Pathfinder Society could ally itself with the Way, the relationship would be of immense benefit to both organizations.”

Amara’s voice reveals her satisfaction as she says, “Pathfinders, we are on the cusp of just such an alliance. In a day’s time, we shall meet with this representative from the Way of the Kirin, and you are to act as security for me and ensure that the meeting is a success. I do not expect any trouble from the Way, but after all of the betrayals and double-crosses that the Society has experienced over the past few years, I worry that this is an elaborate setup by the Aspis Consortium. I have arranged for us all to be transported to the site early tomorrow morning, so take care of any errands you have in Ramparassad this afternoon. There are no settlements near our destination, and we will be spending the night there. I expect you understand the need to be fully prepared.”

Amara Li stares into the dregs of her tea as though she were attempting to discern some lost thoughts in the green leaves floating at the cup’s bottom, then looks up. “Ah yes—before the negotiations begin in earnest, I will host a formal tea ceremony to set the tone. I encourage you to participate, though doing so is not required. I would, however, expect you to dress appropriately for the event.”

With that, she stands and waits to accept any questions.

Daedîn groans at the prospect of formal attire

Starling ask about the plans of the league or consortium. The Venture Captain sighs ”What is the Golden League? Much as the Society has gathered rivals in the Inner Sea, the Way of the Kirin has made many enemies in Tian Xia. The Golden League is a powerful criminal organization with influence throughout Tian Xia. They are masters of subtle manipulation, bribery, thuggery, and assassination. Their enforcers are called Xun— merciless thugs who don't hesitate to maim or kill a person for the league families they serve. They are easy enough to spot by the nearly full-body tattoos that they favor. Should you see any Xun here in Ramparassad, keep clear.”

Excited about shopping, Feybella ask for more information about the Way. Amara Li thinks for a moment before replying “Slightly more than a century ago, the Lung Wa Dynasty collapsed, plunging much of Tian Xia into chaos. During this time, a once-powerful military and trade organization known as the Way of the Kirin also crumbled and disappeared from the public eye. At the height of its power the Way of the Kirin held great wealth and had small private armies defending its interests. A century later, the Way has not entirely vanished, but the organization's influence has waned to the extent where its very existence is kept secret for the sake of its remaining members. What remains is a shell of its former glory. The few extant members of Way of the Kirin have access to vast stores of wealth, information, and magic.”

Kahwen reassures Amara Li that they will get the task done.

Daedîn inquires where the tea ceremony is to be held. Amara Li replies to Daedîn “To ensure the utmost secrecy, I will not reveal that until after we have left in the morning. There are too many curious ears in Ramparassad.”

Aaftaab agrees to participate in the tea ceremony. Amara Li smiles, Excellent, I look forward to your honeyed words.”

The next morning, Amara, the Pathfinder group, and a pair of servants are teleported to the island where the meeting will occur. Amara tells you that we are now on a small volcanic island at the northern end of the Minatan Archipelago.

A black stone pier juts out from the beach, though years of pounding surf and use make it impossible to discern whether it was magic or skilled hands that constructed the pier. Igneous black sand peppered with chunks of dark gray rock makes up the beach. Further up the hill, the landscape is filled with strange shapes eroded from the charcoal-colored stone. Wild basalt beasts, bizarre pumice chimneys, igneous archways, and twisted stone snakes line the winding mile long path that crawls up the steep hillside.

The black tiles of the lighthouses’s rooftop is just barely visible between two of the more serpentine stone menhirs. A light mist dampens the docks and darkens the stone to a glossy black.

The mist and light rain on the island, doubles the normal penalty for vision to –2 for every 10 feet. In addition, creatures further than 50 feet away benefit from concealment, and creatures more than 100 feet away have total concealment.

A lighthouse towers above a two-story house. Both structures are made primarily of the local soot-colored basalt. The lighthouse appears to be intact, but the manor has fared less well—its windows lack screens and its roof sags, suggest it has suffered badly from decades of neglect. These structures perch at the edge of a cliff, with the north-facing side of the house supported by tall stilts anchored deep into the cliff.

The strong wooden door at the entry can be barred from the inside and makes a formidable barricade, but the large windows make the house difficult to defend as they now stand.

So far there are no signs of life on the island.

Amara Li turns to your group, ”I plan to have the tea ceremony in the great halll when Iko Tsuneo arrives at noon until then you do what you deem necessary to insure the meeting is secure.” She orders the two servants to clean the the great hall and has laid out the vessels and utensils for an elaborate tea ceremony.

How do you go about exploring the house and lighthouse. You have about 2 hours time. Searching takes a person 5 minutes for most each room. The first two map slides show the house layout. If you have a plan for searching the buildings let me know, or just place your icon in a room and make a perception check.

Kahwen yawns and scratches under the unfamiliar collar of his fancy clothing before rubbing his sleepy eyes. That sleepiness disappears the moment they are teleported. Not only is the teleportation itself fascinating, but also the location where they end up.

He pauses long enough to sift some of the black sand through his fingers, watching it's ebony particles slide past his own ebony feathers.

Then, dusting his hands off but still looking around at the fascinating stone shapes, he hurries to keep up with the group.

When she announces that they have some time before the tea ceremony, he shares a glance with Daedin then starts exploring the rooms, looking for any signs of danger.

"Make your preparations, Madame Li. We'll make sure that there is no danger," Kahwen calls as he begins to search.

Kahwen will start on the bottom floor and go clockwise to each room, searching them. When he completes that circuit, he'll go up to the next floor and do the same then the same for the tower. I'll take 10 in each room to make things easier which will give me a result of 21 and I'll aid Daedin if he searches, as well.

I’ll post the exploration in 15min chunks so to try and keep everyone in temporally in sync.

In the first 15 minutes, Kahwen searches the bottom floor of the house. Down stairs Kahwen discovers the Kitchen has several large, empty chests that once served as pantry space, an oven with openings in the top for pots of various sizes, a sink, and a single wooden stool. Kahwen also notices a family crest stamped into the tiles of the oven.

Knowledge (nobility) DC15 or Linguistics DC20:
The family crest on the oven tiles belongs to Iko Tsuneo’s family

Searching the Great Hall Kahwen imagines this large room served as the great hall that once provided Way of the Kirin members a place to meet and socialize, as well as a library for research. Two massive bay windows with window seats topped with ruined silk cushions face north and offer a spectacular view of the ocean and a cluster of smaller islands. He figures barricading these windows will takes 15 feet of material each. Turning his attention to the immense fireplace against the southern wall he discovers a concealed panel in which a small stairway leading to a lava tube that snakes through the island’s stone core below. Could make a handy escape route if things turned dire.

The other room is an unremarkable dining room.

Feybella quickly notices that there is plenty of furniture in the house that can be dismantled or moved to barricade most of the windows with properties equal to that of a good wooden door. All told, there is enough material to available to block 12 5-foot sections of open space. She estimates it would take a person about 5 minutes to barricade a 5-foot section.

creating a barrier that has the properties of a good wooden door (hardness 5, 15 hit points). Setting up barricades takes a person 5 minutes for every 5-foot section.

Starling heads to the second floor to search. The first room is devoid of furniture, but because of the room’s position immediately above the main door, Starling believes murder holes could be cut in the floor for firing arrows down on intruders or even pouring dangerous substances on them. There is a fire place where water could be boiled to pour down. She estimates it would take 20 to 30 minutes to create murder holes and an hour to boil water.

Starling searches two more bedrooms, but doesn't find anything of interest.

Daedîn stealthily joins the search starting in the bottom floor of the lighthouse finding that it contains a jumble of old supplies. He finds two rusty bear traps and 20-gallon barrel of whale oil meant to fuel the lighthouse’s fire. He also notices that many of the old pieces of lumber and iron fittings are actually what remains of a disassembled catapult. Not all of the pieces are present, but functional replacements could be fashion.

The second floor of the lighthouse is empty except for the slightly arched covered bridge connecting the the room to the house. A wooden spiral staircase winds its way up to the tower’s top. A trapdoor at the top of the stairs exits to a narrow walkway with a railing that encircles the middle of the small foom housing the lantern. The lighthouse lantern is still functional, but the lens and half of the glass panes what would have once protected and focused the flame are now broken from ears of bad weather. Before it can be lit oil must be added to the lanter’s 2-gallon reservoir. Daedîn estimates it would shed normal light in a 100-foot radius.

Kahwen, Starling and Daedîn spend 10 minutes each finishing the exploration of the upstairs. Most of the rooms are unremarkable, but the master bedroom is dominated by a large rotting bed and a relatively well-preserved desk and chair. The ceiling sags from water damage and the floor in the center of the room slants alarmingly. They believe sawing away at the floorboards could create a trap such that anyone traversing the room could fall through the floor like a pit trap.

Kahwen barely pays any attention to the family crest, far more interested in more practical matters. He makes sure that everyone knows about his rope upstairs and the secret tunnel out so that they have two good methods of egress should things go wrong.

As the group gathers again and shares what they've found, it becomes apparent they can turn this place into a fairly defensible location. It's just a matter of whether or not they should.

"What do you think, Companions? Mistress Li said not to ruin the tea ceremony. Will our guests be offended if they find that we have turned this place into a fortress? Should we only do what changes will be difficult to spot or go for as much safety as we can manage?"

He puts the question to Amara Li as well, or includes her in the discussion if she is available.

In any case, he goes about the task of creating the murder holes first. They'll be relatively difficult to spot, after all and will likely go unnoticed.

Starling passes near the kitchen and comments, "That crest... I believe it belongs to Iko Tsuneo’s family!"

She then busies herself in making several makeshift barricades, which she uses to block the windows. These are marked on the map, unless the windows can be barred in which case I'll relocate.

Also, I assuming Starling can't start boiling water and go do something else while it heats up?

Kahwen shrugs off the family crest, and makes sure everyone knows about the rope at the top of the lighthouse and the secret tunnel. When asking Amara Li she about turning the place into a fortress, she merely replies ”Do what you feel is necessary to insure the success of this meeting. I don’t think guest will be offended.”

Kahwen efficantly completes the murder holes above the front entrance.

Daedîn works on building the pit trap in the master bedroom. After which he whips up replacement pieces for the catapult and reassembles it. He even has time to take practice shots if he would like. Operating the catapult requires 3 people working for 3 full rounds actions to load and fire it.

Aaftaab hops on his Roc companion and takes a flight around the island. The mist and light rain that hampers the view continues to cover the island and is unlikely to let up anytime soon. Nevertheless, Aaftaab sees the back stone pier, the igneous black sand beaches, and bizarre pumice chimneys that make up most of the island. The many rocky outcroppings provide ample material for constructing deadfalls, anchoring tripwires and so on.

Inspecting the cliff side of the house Aaftaab sees the large bay windows have a fairly rough 60 foot cliff below them which is also slick from the rain and surf making it difficult to scale. The water below is deep and choppy which would be hard to swim in.

(The mist and light rain on the island, doubles the normal penalty for vision to –2 for every 10 feet. In addition, creatures further than 50 feet away benefit from concealment, and creatures more than 100 feet away have total concealment.)

Starling easily recognizes the family crest of Iko Tsuneo. She works to barricade the lower windows of the house, then gathers the fuel, pot, water, and lights the fire needed to boil the water, as well as tending it.

Feybella helps Starling build barricades. Due to the mist and light rain visibility is limited to 100ft.
