Season of Ghosts

We're Not All Bad

As an undead army pushed forth by the Whispering Tyrant stirs in the Southern Fangwood, driving the local animals to flee in terror, the goblins of the Crookedtoes tribe suddenly find their bellies empty and growling for food. Worse, the tribe's best scout has gone missing, and the chief has tasked the four brightest members of the Crookedtoes to go out into the woods and find out what happened. While searching for the missing scout, the goblins stumble across a wrecked farmhouse on a hill and discover a group of knights camped nearby. Though the knights have retreated from the undead army menacing the area, they have decided to make one last, desperate stand: an endgame doomed to wipe out both the knights and the Crookedtoes settlement. Now, the four goblins must test their mettle—will they emerge as victorious heroes, or fall to the might of the undead scourge?

Season of Ghosts

We Be Heroes?

The Crookedtoe goblins are a small tribe that was nearly wiped out during the Goblinblood Wars that engulfed the Chitterwood 20 years ago. They only managed to survive after the more aggressive, violent members of their tribe were killed and the remaining goblins fled far to the north, finally settling in the southern Fangwood, where they took to hiding in the deeper sections of the forest. In a remarkable change of long-held tradition, the surviving goblins intentionally chose to curtail their ancestor's violent ways. A young and energetic leader named Velkik claimed to have visions of the sun speaking to her, and soon came to hold sway over the tribe, preaching the ways of redemption and peace. She subtly turned the tribe's obsession with fire into veneration of the sun, effectively creating a community devoted to Sarenrae, although because Velkik has no formal religious training, the communities faith is far from mainstream. Over the years Chief Velkik has introduced radical reforms; instead of being caged, goblin young are merely leased, for instance, and reading and writing are not outright forbidden, although there is still much nervousness around the practice.

Perhaps most significantly, Velkik changed the way the Crookedtoes kept their voracious appetites sated. Instead of raiding nearby settlements, the tribe turned to hunting and gathering for subsistence. Under her leadership, the tribe has managed to avoid conflict with any nearby humans and have even made peaceful contact with a few traveling merchants who pass through the area. While the occasional rogue element arises in the group, Velkik keeps a close eye out for anyone who displays too many 'classic' goblin behaviors.

But change is in the air. A foul miasma of death and decay has crept into the lands of the Crookedtoes and food has become scarce. Animals in the forest seem to have fled, and the tribe's scouts have reported a rise in undead sightings. Worse, the tribe's best scout, Grimeye, has gone missing. This is where your story begins...
______________

The sun is high in the sky, the light barely filtering through the branches of the trees to the game trail below. Your group has been following the tracks of an animal spotted in this area, and your stomachs grumble at the thought of meat. Just this morning you were approached by Chief Velkik and given a desperate mission.

"You're our only hope. All tribe is very hungry. Chief Scout Grimeye supposed to bring back food, but now he missing. He said he saw tracks of food animal, maybe pig wandering woods near here. You go find pig and maybe Grimeye too. Remember we trying to be nice now, so be nice to any longshanks you see. At least don't kill them. Find food, and you be heroes!"

Survival (DC 10):

After 10 minutes of searching you are able to locate animal tracks and determine that they head north, where you recall there to be a longshank farmstead.

If you study the tracks and make a DC 12 Nature check, open the spoiler below.

Spoiler:

Excelsior! The tracks seem to be those of a pig or large boar.

Season of Ghosts

Though Chuffy, Crimsi's amazingly identical twin, is skeptical that there's anything of interest to find amid the numerous tracks that run along the animal trail, the rest of the group ignores them as they conduct their own search. And sure enough, after studying the game trail a bit more closely Crimsi's keen eyes and Mitzi's equally keen nose pick out one set of tracks in particular that seem promising, leading away towards the north. The news gets even better when Crimsi and Siathorn confirm that said tracks surely belong to a big, fat, juicy pig (or boar)!

Cheered by this bit of good news, Pizazz sings a little ditty as you all quickly fall into line and turn your sights northward. After maybe 15 to 20 minutes of following the tracks you see, up ahead, what appears to be a single-room cabin standing amid a copse of trees on a flat hill, its door smashed open. Next to the cabin is a small vegetable garden as well as an animal pen. You all can see that the rough-hewn corner post of the pen nearest the cabin's front door is askew, and the thick wooden rails once connected to it are in pieces - now no more than large wooden splinters scattered about on the ground.

But the most chilling thing of all about this scene is the half-eaten goblin corpse that lies just outside of the pen. Three pigs with mottled, rotting flesh stand over the body; a single goblin ear sticks out of the mouth of one like a leaf. Another stares straight ahead, unblinking, as it mechanically chews on part of an arm.

Somehow, they don't seem to have spotted the party - yet.

Siathorn draws her weapon and swiftly circles around the well, commanding Mitzi to keep her safe. Teeth bared in a snarl, Mitzi interposes herself between her dear mistress and the nasty, stinky zombie pigs, ready to tear into the first one that gets too close!

Offended to his core by these undead swine and their temerity to dine on the flesh of a fellow goblin Grenek flies into a rage and charges Green, swinging his enormous greataxe down in a powerful blow. The blade slices cleanly through Green's neck, sending a shower of rotting flesh and bone flying into the air as the beast collapses to the ground!

With Green now down Crimsi steps forward and fires a bolt from her crossbow at Orange, calling for vengeance for Grimeye. Unfortunately, the bolt whizzes past Orange - though not by much - and whizzes off into the trees on the other side of the clearing. Less concerned about the dead goblin and more about the taste of the pig meat, Pizazz sings a little ditty to inspire himself and his friends before also taking aim at Orange and firing a shot from his hand crossbow.

*THUNK*

The bolt slams into Orange's flank, piercing deeply and causing the zombie pig to stumble slightly though it gives no other reaction. Since Green has already been felled so nicely by Grenek, Chuffy shrugs and fires upon Orange as well...

*THUNK* *THUD*

...and scores a direct hit into the skull! Orange's legs buckle and then the zombie pig thuds to the ground, dead once more. The remaining pig utters a terrible, haunting squeal as it charges towards Grenek, who stands closest! As it comes within reach of the goblin it attempts to gore him with its still-sharp tusks...

Luckily there doesn't seem to be anything or anyone else lurking in the immediate vicinity. Meanwhile Mitzi bounds up to the zombie pig and attempts to take a bite out of it but the pig remains rather difficult to strike even in undeath and the 'wolf's' teeth snap down on nothing but air.

Frustrated by her earlier miss, Crimsi hastily reloads her crossbow and tries again to skewer the piggy. Even with Mitzi now up in the pig's face and providing a screen from the shot, Crimsi manages to nail it squarely in the shoulder this time! Chuffy follows this up with another crossbow bolt of her own and brings beast down at last! With the three zombie pigs dead (again), the area grows quiet...except for the sounds of Pizazz's singing and Grenek's angry grunting and huffing.

Behind the Scenes:

Pizazz Sneak: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Satisfied that the coast is clear for the moment you begin to spread out a bit as you search the farm for threats, food, more zombie pigs, food, longshanks...oh, and food. Food is very important.

Both Siathorn and Crimsi move to have a look inside the longshanks farmhouse, noting that the door has been smashed open somewhat recently. Judging by the deep gouges, it seems likely that the zombie pigs must have been responsible. The house contains little but the simple possessions of the longshanks who built it; a few cups and plates, wooden utensils, and an iron pot, as well as a single straw mattress, and a few blankets. The answer as to the longshanks' fate lies in the few chewed bones and bloody pieces of clothing that are scattered about the interior.

On the bright side, there are a few vegetables tucked away on a nearby shelf that seem to be relatively fresh!

Outside, Pizazz finishes his performance with a little song of victory and a morsel of rotting pig flesh before slipping into the shadows and moving towards the empty pig pen to look around. Unfortunately there's nothing of value within the pig pen or the shed attached to it besides a few buckets and a shovel.

Silver goes to take a look at the vegetable garden while Grenek stomps about in a huff, hoping to impress and intimidate anyone that might be secretly watching and thinking of attacking. The vegetable garden has been torn up and destroyed by the zombie pigs but there might be a few stray tomatoes and some carrots that can be salvaged with a little time and effort. Further investigation of the farmstead also turns up a half-eaten sack of corn and a bag of flour. Together, this food isn't enough to last a long time, but it should help fill the bellies of the tribe, at least for a few days.

Closer examination of Grimeye's body reveals his gear to be mostly intact, including an Eagle-Eye Elixir and a Feather Token (Bird) that he had in his possession.

Other than what you've found there doesn't appear to be much else here at the farmstead.

The sickly sweet odor of rotting meat flows upon a fetid breeze from that direction. Clearly visible at a great distance to the north, massive columns of skeletal troops of all sizes, their torn banners held high, march in lockstep beneath a clouded sky, moving from the northeast to the southwest. Outriders robed in shadow sit upon pale horses, scouting the area around the main body of troops, flitting about while their robes seem unaffected by the wind.

The Crookedtoe goblins dwell in a squalid village of individual houses and a central meeting area. There is a small stream nearby that functions as a source of crude irrigation, a sewage dump and drinking water.

As you make your way into the village Chief Velkik greets you with open arms. Although she is partially blind thanks to her bad habit of staring adoringly at the sun , she still holds complete control over the tribe. "You back! You find food?" she asks. Then she stops, sniffing at the air.

"What smell? Smell worse than time Gluts' thumb get all black and mushy! Fell off, too. Very stinky."

"Yes!" says Pizazz.

He proudly holds up the zombie-pig-carcass.

"Not too old even!" he adds, as if that seems to matter to him.

"Also, we see big undead army heading in kind of this direction and kind of not in this direction. Pizazz get turned around a bit in forest."

Siathorn pulls out one of the vegetables. "Yes! Have vegetables. Not pickled but probably safer than meat that might start moving again."

Pizazz again presents his dead boar.

"Pig we eat is normally dead. This even better. Dead twice!" he says proudly.

"Why eat plants when good dead pig here?" he adds in a competitive manner.

He looks over his shoulder, nervously at the forest.

"But like Pizazz said. Lots of more dead things moving in kind-of this direction..."

Season of Ghosts

Chief Velkik sighs and shakes her head. "Thought you smarter than that, Pizazz. Undead meat is no good to eat. Vegetables okay though, good fiber."

"But this army you saw is getting too close for us to stay. If we just run off, Tyrant's army is sure to wipe us out. Maybe there is another way." Velkik turns and faces roughly southwest. "Vulture scouts spotted many, many nasty flying birds closing in on us, but they also saw a group of longshanks in shiny armor trapped in a valley on the other side of this hill." She indicates the steep, rough mountain to the east. "If we could get them to come here and escort us, together we might be able to make it south and be safe."

"Once again I need you to do big job. No time to go over mountain, and our last vulture scouts barely made it back after they were attacked by undead birds. They're not eager to test their luck a second time - and longshanks are too heavy for vultures to haul out anyways! But there is secret way."

Velkik grins broadly. "There is tunnel we have not used for years that leads to valley where longshanks are. They probably think they cornered. You go through tunnel and get longshanks to come back here and save us all, and you become biggest heroes our tribe has ever known!"

She digs around for a moment in a pocket then pulls out a handcarved wooden statuette of a woman with feathery wings, her arms outstretched at her side. She holds it out before you and says, "Show the longshanks this and maybe they listen better."

Religion (DC 10):

This statuette is a representation of Sarenrae, a good aligned god of healing, honesty, redemption, and the sun.

"Oh! Almost forgot," Velkik adds as she digs into her pocket again and pulls out a small jade statue of a cat. "This for doing good job and finding food and finding Grimeye. What was left of Grimeye, anyway."

"Got questions? Ask now if so!"
