That, only I thought maybe all of us could come along for the prisoner transfer: the more "guards" around, the more reassuring for the staff at the prison, I imagine, and with our new wand on top of Pellius' skills, I think everyone could be disguised pretty neatly and drastically.

Kira, Pellius and Adonara you head back to the facility, the guards have changed and the two on duty eye you suspiciously.

"Hold citizens, what do you want?"

Just one last thing first, before we head out. As the Ravens prepare to enact their latest daring plan, Adonara produces two small figurines for the latest recruits, explaining their use. silver raven figurines of wondrous power, naturally. :) I’m guessing we would have reclaimed them from the others before they left the party. “Mind, if things go awry, it’s far more likely that we’d send a signal out into the street, if you didn’t hear us from inside.”

The courtesan does hope that everything goes smoothly, not least because the idea of serving the agents of the law with disguised impertinence twice in one afternoon is too delightful for words.

* * *

Once everyone’s in position, Adonara meets the two guards with a gentlewoman’s assurance, barely looking up from her animated conversation with Kira and Pellius, though she smiles politely as she shows the two letters with the Lord-Mayor’s prominent seal, “We have business to discuss with your captain.”

“It’s most tiresome,” she complains to her companions as the credentials are examined. “I don’t mind doing Ligeia a favour, especially if she’s working with his lordship, (Hint, hint, lowly doormen. ;) ) and I was going to be southside anyway, and I know you can’t all be the Villegre Voice, and of course I’m not blaming you – but you tell Baylis –”

She breezily dreams up both a patriotic play in the works by an aristocratic acquaintance, as well as an editor at the Kintargan Gazette. “– that if he doesn’t shape up before he sends his people out, his subscribers will reconsider which papers they patronize. Empty threats from me, to be sure, but if this keeps up he won’t want to hear what the Court of Coin as a whole have to say.”

She turns back to the guards, and assesses them frankly and approvingly, telling Kira, “There are distinct possibilities. I’m still not entirely convinced that a contemporary setting best suits the theatre, but your corresponding article can hardly go wrong. And with his lordship masterminding the entire unified plan for the people to learn about the condition of the whole archduchy, the disloyal and traitorous can only tremble.” Apart from the Wildean question of the social possibilities of a profile, Adonara’s not above playing something like the first couple of minutes of the patter here for her own advantage.

“Everything in order?” she asks sweetly, before dropping a last few names for now, and indulging in a patrician plural. “Everyone’s bound to be arriving at the Delronges’ in little more than an hour, and we were planning to go in with the Sarinis.” If a Diplomacy check is in order at this point: Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 With the usual additional +4 if her obedience applies. And yikes, but we certainly hope it does! Or someone needs to step in to calm the waters for a very demanding princess, whether by a better Diplomacy or a Bluff check, as appropriate. :)

Kira steps forward, eyes slightly narrowed. "From your expressions and your question, I'm guessing your predecessors in the watch did not tell you to expect our arrival." She sighs, rubbing her forehead. In a mutter that is definitely meant to be overheard, she says, "I knew we should have insisted on talking to someone higher up the chain of command."

Forcing a smile onto her face, she looks up at the much-taller guard. "I stopped by earlier to make an appointment so her ladyship," (with a gesture towards Adonara), "could speak to your commander. We're collaborating on a project to help the citizenry of this fine city recognize the good work that you dottari do, and a brief interview would be most helpful."

Sorry, guys. I swear there’s something under these mattresses! Couldn’t get a wink of sleep last night. ;)

Adonara can tell from the guard’s hesitation that she’s laid it on a bit too thick, possibly overwhelming the guard with details that might all demand corroboration. Mercifully, Kira steers the conversation deftly and firmly back to where it should be.

She decides to follow Kira’s lead and fall back on the Chelaxian tendency to respect authority. After all, these guards don’t actually need to like her, just to let her and her friends in. She can’t resist the opportunity to choose her words to acknowledge Kira’s quick thinking with a self-deprecating double meaning, though.

“Thank you. I’m glad someone knows what they’re doing.” Adonara narrows her eyes as she considers the hesitant guard again, as if memorizing his face. “I’ll have to suggest that Ligeia include a comic gatekeeper.”

It’s a subtle threat, but the last thing any ambitious dottari would want is to be taken as a model for a figure of fun at the theatre, closet drama or no.

The guard stammers, suddenly unsure of himself.

"....Cccertainly milady, please come with me, I will take you to see the captain."

[i]He leads you into the captain's office. Standing behind the desk is a middle aged woman wearing a breastplate. She looks at you with a piercing gaze.

Adonara tries not to squirm as the threesome is led inside the prison and the walls close around them. She notes the closed doors they’re led past, counts the visible guards and keeps an ear open for what must be their off-duty colleagues in the barracks, and tries to match all that to Vendalfek’s scouting report in case she and the others need to get out in a hurry.

Probably right through there, actually, she thinks, her glance sliding past the other door out of the office. Oops. If we’re in B3, I imagined taking the long way around, but that might be right for a “no funny business” message from the guards. Anyway, notoriety: trying to beat 3(%) again: 1d100 ⇒ 83 The rewards of a subtle approach continue to pay off. :)

“Good afternoon, Captain,” Adonara says with a gentler smile, taking the opportunity of a new person to deal with to try to recalibrate her diplomatic approach as she hands over the first letter, her introduction. “I apologize for the confusion: these two’s escort must have been delayed, and I just happened to be in the right place to assist the lord-mayor’s office with sorting things out.”

She elaborates on the pretext while the captain scans the letter: the supposed propaganda drive Thrune’s setting up, the interview for the Kintargan Gazette by Kira and Pellius, the commissioning of a new play with a patriotic theme, for which a glimpse at the workings of the prison would revitalize a representation of the terrible efficacy of Chelaxian justice in correcting and making an example of reprobates, traitors, and other lowlifes, by Adonara’s friend – probably leaning to the latter half of frenemy actually, but who’s counting – Ligeia…

“… the younger Sarini daughter, you know. So talented. Anyway, along with that, the Right Worshipful Lord-Mayor had the brilliant idea of having the press publicize the excellent work of his most trusted officers in defending Kintargo from the schemes of subversives, malcontents, and treasonous rabble like those Torrent creatures. Is it really true that they fell so low as to turn heretic thieves? What could possibly be a suitable punishment?”

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 Possibly +4, &c. Although she’s all wide eyes, Adonara's animation betrays that she can all too easily imagine the gruesome, sadistic details, and probably provide some of her own, as she leans forward on her chair, ready to devour the raw material while Kira and Pellius take notes for their article. While that’s only fitting for someone with friends into the Theater of the Real, it sits uneasily with her attempted veneer of gentility.

OK, shutting up now. The dice have obviously turned against Adonara and then some for this part of the plan, at least as far as not suggesting something utterly depraved every time she opens her mouth goes. Yikes, Ado, you're not technically on the clock at the moment!

"Well, that would be up to the Lord Mayor to decide, i suspect probably doghousing would be an initial start. I should stress that they have not been convicted yet, at the moment they are merely 'helping us with our enquiries.'"

Having said I would keep quiet, let me revise that to not touching any dice again before it becomes necessary. :) But as for nudging the conversation back to easier, more general conversation…

More subtle than that concerned citizen flunky in the first temporary jail, Adonara concedes grudgingly, but all the more dangerous for it.

After all, if the captain doesn’t seem exactly eager to swap ideas for torture, neither does she seem to be particularly appalled by her guest’s apparent taste for cruelty. Said guest is under no illusions as to the nature of the ‘help’ being extracted from the captured Hellknights, but she is careful not to let her distaste show as searches her memory for the primer in the Asmodean Disciplines she received before heading to Cheliax, trying to recall how torture justifies itself in infernal law. Ah, yes.

“Naturally, naturally. Though there will be the matter that they are obstructing the progress of a legal investigation (by the very fact of resisting, I imagine!), and therefore, in due course, I’m sure – but I’ve already leapt far over the beginning, and I’m not a professional storyteller. And there is one other brief matter, but I hope you’ll forgive us if we wait on your complaisance as to our interview first,” Adonara-as-sponsor graciously condescends to leave off a discussion of the finer points of the procedures and techniques of excruciation for now to cede the floor to the journalists of the paper she and her ilk support.

Which is to say, she’ll try to leave the rest of the interview – for any last intel we might be able to wheedle out – in Kira and Pellius’ more capable and hopefully luckier hands, and let them decide when to hand over the second letter / set of forged orders, cast suggestion, and hope for the best. Phew! This conspiracy business is hard work! ;)

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Still, it was good while it lasted. Ah, Pelberry! Truly, he was the best of us. :)

Adonara manages to keep her jaw from dropping as Pellius manages to get the captain aside for a quick word. After all, she’s well-trained in brazen effrontery: she doesn’t get hired on the strength of her ability to blush. Well, mostly. She does have a couple of stories, but she only kisses and tells for a very good reason.

This is almost definitely one of those times, Adonara thinks, switching to Infernal for Kira’s benefit.

“Oh, I like that!” she exclaims approvingly in deviltongue, the merest shade of pallor flickering over her features as she thinks she sees – for an instant – the foe’s bone structure lurch as she gets shoved to one side. “You’ll have to show me how to do it.”

Watching warily for an opening as she gathers her whip into her hand again, Adonara sketches out a mental map of what she knows of the jail. Ryker and Valekar will be coming in behind us, through two guards. Then that passage must be to the cells, but narrow and past the barracks, so… She considers how happy Kira and Pellius might be about trying to dodge past the warden as long as she’s still armed and ready. *Writhes in anxious anticipation.* I’ve got some ideas, but I’ll keep quiet and not try to call all the shots. Apparently, it’s not the lizard people folks need to worry about, it’s the sneaky elves trying to pull all the strings. :)

Err, anyway, something in character in the interval:

Keeping an ear out, Adonara estimates how long it will take for the off-duty guards to arm themselves and arrive. Supposing heavier armour – or they would just relax in it – and a handful of guards, and depending on their willingness to risk rushing the usual last adjustments… She estimates the Ravens have got at most about a minute, likelier half that.

No time like the present to start putting the fear of the goddess, and her servant, into them, then.

“Get up – if you can,” Adonara taunts the warden, switching back to Common for the benefit of any guards close enough to hear. “Or I’ll put you down like any other of your master’s dogs.”

Only her appreciation for the way these things are done prevents her from putting the boot in. Memo to self: be sure to avoid getting into a situation where one might reasonably fear provoking multiple attacks of opportunity at once.

halberd on Valekar: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Meanwhile Sabo tries to attack Adonara from the floor.

mace: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 8 - 4 = 5

damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

And back to you guys

Right where I want you!

Although he's unable to avoid a wicked halberd chop, Ryker manages to line up a severe thrust with his sword as the guard predictably closes with him.

"You doing alright over there?" he calls over to Valekar. It'd be unprofessional to use his name, but we never discussed codes either. He's not looking so hot after that!

Confirm?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 202d6 + 14 ⇒ (6, 4) + 14 = 24 :)?
Move to study, standard to hopefully obliterate the guard, 5ft back. GM, is there an obvious key ring on the guard's person?

@GM: I think we may have missed Valekar’s turn this round that just ended? Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

Adonara easily avoids this swipe at her legs, at least, dancing back only to keep pressing her own attack. Attack, using power attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 27 Damage: 1d3 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 + 2 = 7
To confirm crit threat: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 22 Add damage for crit: 1d3 + 3 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 2 = 9 And while Sabo's prone, she takes a -4 penalty to AC. Feeling pretty confident about this. :)

She doesn't have to wait too long before she spots an opening, and she brings her whip slashing down with more than a hint of a cold, alarming smile tugging at her lips. If she can only keep this up, she rather wishes the warden were foolish enough to try to get up, and give her another opportunity to strike.

Well, seeing Ryker's rolls, the dice are certainly running hot this morning, looks like!

Ryker deals the guard a mighty blow, slicing him in two with his greatsword.

Meanwhile, in the office, Adonara also deals Sabo a mighty blow.

Valekar moves up to the second guard and attacks.

spear: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 15

damage: 1d8 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 3 = 9

@Ryker- yeah the guard has a set of keys on his belt.

"It's time to end this," Adonara says in Infernal, balancing lightly on her feet, ready to exploit every advantage ruthlessly.

It occurs to me that she didn't use her move action, so she'll happily take a 5'-step to set up some flanking if Kira's not planning on casting another spell this round.

Adonara's probably of the school of thought that there's no such thing as overkill - only questions of efficiency. o.O

Kira is planning on casting another spell, but if you take a step north Kira will move to help you flank her.

Well that didn't work. Sabo easily resisted the cone of colors, although she was still on the ground after Adonara's attack. But this one did...

Her fingers start moving in that odd jerky fashion again. Anyone looking closely can see Sabo's skeleton shuddering beneath her skin in an extremely disturbing manner. Then she takes a step closer, dagger clutched in her hand.

Boneshaker: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 4, 4) = 17

Casting Boneshaker. Fortitude DC17 to halve the damage. If she fails, (and Adonara moves north), I will also move her 5 feet east so she's between Adonara and Kira.
