The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

“Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Feel free to now introduce your characters and ask Janira any questions while I review character sheets and the last two players check in.

When I present knowledge checks like this in Play-by-Post, it indicates that you may roll 1 roll for the indicated skill and may open all of the spoilers for which you have met or exceeded the DC. In this case there are two skills: Knowledge (geography) and Knowledge (history).

The rolls in this post represent background information that you might have that pertains to the mission briefing.

Knowledge (Geography), DC 10+:

At the center of the Isle of Kortos stand the Kortos Mounts, the points on the island.

Knowledge (Geography), DC 15+:

Entire tribes of centaurs, harpies, and minotaurs constantly vie for territory up and around the Mounts, with harpies being the most common at higher altitudes and centaurs controlling the lower slopes and foothills.

Knowledge (History), DC 15+:

Also known as the Low Azlanti, the gillmen are an amphibious humanoid race believed to be the last descendants of the ancient Azlanti people.

Knowledge (History), DC 20+:

During Earthfall, the Starstone struck Golarion and destroyed the human empires of Thassilon and Azlant. It is said that gillmen’s ancestors survived the cataclysmic event because they received the blessing of an aquatic entity that allowed them to breath underwater.

Knowledge (History), DC 25+:

Most scholars believe the terrifying aboleths were responsible for the gillmen’s transformation. Any alliance between them appears to have fallen apart over the millennia, however, and the gillmen are now an independent people.

"Well," Janira begins, "We will be hiking across Kortos and spending at least two nights out in the open, so you'll probably want something to sleep on. Food or a way to get it. Water, of course. There are streams, but it's important to be prepared for adversity, and being lost or trapped without water is a fast way to die--not that any of you are going to die on my watch!

"Then you will be descending into a cave, so spelunking equipment may be important. I'm not sure. I didn't go inside the cave, so I don't know how deep it goes or how hard it is the traverse. If you can't see in the dark, then some way to light your way.

"Oh! And most important--well, not as important as water, of course--writing tools and paper to document your notes so that you can write an accurate report once we're finished!"

She smiles cheerfully at you all. "Does anyone need to go shopping?"

"No? Alright," Janira says, gathering her things. "Let me know if you think of anything you need to buy before we hit the city gates."

Janira expands upon the details of your mission as you march through the streets of Absalom, “After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.

“The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.”

If there isn't anything you want to leave behind that would lighten your load, just note it. Yes, although I will adjudicate that it will take 2 Full Round actions to retrieve it off of Pink. You might find Table Variation on how they handle that without a specific trick devoted to that; however, there is no defined trick for that and animal companions wear all kinds of jewelry. Pathfinder trick: carry your backpack (or waterskin) on one shoulder most of the time and drop it as a free action during combat.

You all can back post any purchases.

The spunky halfling leads you north through the surrounding farmlands and then into the Cairnlands. Here there are many ancient, abandoned siege weapons left from past, failed attempts to take the City at the Center of the World. The journey thus far is uneventful, and Janira fills the time by reviewing many of Master Shane's lectures on history. You begin to wonder how the woman's mouth does not go dry.

Eventually, you make it into the wilderness surrounding the Kortos Mountains. The woods become gradually denser, and the forest floor darker as the canopy thickens and the sun drifts down in the sky.

"This looks like a good place to camp," Janira announces. "Let's clear a place for a fire and prepare supper. Oh, and who's volunteering for digging the latrine?"

Interpreting the writing afterward can sometimes be a challenge, sadly; the spirits don't give me insight to the words they use my hands to record, so often I am left confused as to what they say. It also requires some time to do, so it's no good when a quick decision is needed. But if we find ourselves stumped about what to do, or where to go, this may become a useful option."

Using the automatic writing (linguistics) skill unlock takes 1 hour, and provides insight as per the augury spell with a success rate of 60% plus more depending on how much I exceed the DC of 20 by. Most of the second day of travel through the woods passes uneventfully as well. The trees towering overhead begin to shield most of what remains of the day’s sun and the vegetation beneath grows denser. Janira pauses a moment and pulls out an intricate silver compass emblazoned with the Pathfinder Society logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. “I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well.”

She flips open the device and holds it in front of her; the initials J. L. are engraved into the inside of the device’s lid. After studying the compass inside for a moment, she remarks, “We’re on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead.”

The next day, Rega is keeping stride with Paltair. "Why move them and stir whatever may be resting underneath when you can climb them and get the lay of the land?" She says as she bounds toward the rocks, practically jumping to get atop them.

Pink, thinking Rega was initiating a race, would bound after (and probably ahead of) the Kitsune.

You pause in the woods so that you can get your bearings. While Janira stares down at her wayfinder, tapping it a couple times with her finger, Pink lets out a low growl, staring toward the north. The warning comes to late for the rest of you.

Two chitinous beasts the size of dogs leap out of the bushes at you!

Knowledge (Nature) (DC 10):
These are giant fleas. They are vermin. You may ask for 1 detail + 1 additional detail for every 5 by which the roll beats the DC.

The creatures move through the air like a bolt fired from a crossbow. One slams into Janira and latches on with its sharp mouth parts. "Ow!" squeaks the surprised halfling. The other lands just short of Jon Rooi, frustrated.

Combat! Round 1. Bold may act.

In PbP, we often smooth combat or other initiative dependent encounters by allowing groups within the same stretch of initiative to post at the same time. The standard way to format who is active is to bold those who may act.

Rega Nin
Pink (requires Handle Animal check)
Ao
Janira (-4 hp) (since you're allies and all in a bunch otherwise, I will slip her action in when appropriate to avoid delays)
Jon Rooi
Paltair
Flea 1 (Red)
Flea 2 (Blue)

Know(Nat): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 1 detail please!

Rega will put some space between herself and the vermin, shouting, "It's a Giant Flea! I've read about it, it... let me recall"

She draws her bow, takes a deep breath, and looses an arrow on the exhale.

Longbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Action Economy:
Move action: 5 ft shift & draw bow
Standard action: Shoot

Could you give me the short version of how this works if the check is failed? Most GMs I have ran with don't do much with Handle Animal

Handle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Especially since I failed

EDIT: I forgot the +4 from Link, so with a new total of 12,

"Pink, attack the flea!"

Jon Rooi lifts a brow in amusement at Paltair's boast of strength, and outright smiles at Rega and Pink's race. "Something tells me that being a Pathfinder isn't quite always so carefree. But it is a good day to enjoy." His eyes scan the landscape, clearly appreciating the natural beauty they find themselves in this day.

His reverie is broken merely moments after his words foretold the danger they found themselves in! He quickly jumps back, hoping to avoid any attacks from the fleas that suddenly appeared on both sides of the lightly-armored Shoanti!

Catching his bearing behind Ao and Paltair, Jon gently grasps Paltair's shoulder. "This will protect you! Let one of those fleas try to hurt you now!"

Targeting Paltair with the mesmerist trick shadow splinter; Paltair must be a willing target to receive the trick. Don't know why he wouldn't want it, but he can resist if he'd like!

Actions:

Move: 10' at half speed to avoid AoOs
Standard: implant shadow splinter trick in

Acrobatics to avoid AoOs (DC = CMD): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Shadow Splinter wrote:
The mesmerist protects the subject against an attack and redirects the harm to someone else. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject takes damage from an attack. The damage the subject takes is reduced by an amount equal to 3 + the mesmerist’s Charisma modifier (to a maximum of the total amount of damage the attack deals). Another creature within range of the original attack, other than the attacker, is affected by a shadow illusion that makes it appear as if the attacker is attacking that creature instead of the attacker’s actual target. This second creature takes an amount of damage equal to the amount by which the attack’s damage was reduced. This shadow doesn’t require a roll to hit and ignores cover and concealment, but the target can attempt a Will save to disbelieve the effect. If it succeeds at this save, it neither takes the damage nor believes the attacker targeted it. This trick can’t be triggered if there’s no eligible second creature within range to take the redirected damage. This is an illusion (shadow) effect.

Jon Rooi will trigger this trick if a flea damages Paltair and the other flea is in range of the original attack. Will DC 14 to resist the damage from the trick.

Giant Flea:
Giant fleas are mindless vermin and immune to mind-affecting spells and powers. They have often pass disease in their bites (Constitution damage, Fortitude DC 11).

Rega: When the Handle Animal check fails, the animal continues doing what it was doing. In this case, Pink continues to heel since you were marching through the wilderness. He will follow your movements, waiting for a (successful) command to attack.

EDIT: Leaving the above for reference. Yes, Link is very important!

Since talking is a free action, am I allowed to share the Giant Flea information in character, or do I need to wait until next round?

You are allowed to share it as long as you are not flat-footed, which you are no longer, so share away!

@GM: just wanted to call your attention to the fact that I edited my post, above, to include my actions for the round. I didn't notice that I'd cross-posted with the start of combat.
