Dungeon racing rules and FAQ

The Malaki Shrine
Your group descends into the Qadiran cave, intrigued by the few valuables scattered here and there on rotting corpses. You journey hundreds of feet into the dark caverns until you come to a great stone door barricaded shut from your side. Strange markings cover the door with one symbol in particular repeated over and over. Surely great danger and treasure waits inside.

DC 25 K rel:

The markings are the symbol of Mazzmezz, demon queen of Vermin.

Matin walks up to the door, standing in his gleaming spiked full plate, his tower shield hefted in his second right arm, his long bardiche held loosely in his right. He grabs a small vial from his belt and downs it. His muscles bulge and his skin hardens and he says, ”Ah, that’s better. Anyone know what this symbol means? I’ll go through first.”

I still need to fix up my header. I’ll get that finished tomorrow.

Pyuvir remains distant from the door, and avoids looking at it directly. His steady gaze focuses on the ground, and then the walls beside the door. Swirled in the shadows of his cloak as he is, he appears as more of a shadow than a person. He calmly remarks "I know not what it could be. But I doubt it would be untoward to suspect danger." Advancing to Matin's position, he inquires "Perhaps some magical assistance would be appropriate?" While waiting for an answer, he begins to weave magic over himself. His quick hand gestures result in a growing field of energy around him.

I got bull's strength, blur, fly, haste, enlarge person, invisibility, and greater invisibility. Any requests?

For himself, he's using mage armour, shield, eagle's splendour, fly, and displacement. I'm saving displacement until right before we kick the door in because of the shorter duration though.

Once they decide to open the door, Matin pulls a wand from his belt and hands it to Pyuvir and says, "Here, use this on me. It makes me bigger without you having to use one of your spells."

Also that AC is ridiculous Calardan, I love it even though I'm getting shown up. I'll have to keep that combo in my back pocket.

Rhodoh watches the group but mainly the man in the spiked mail. He preferred the more comfortable breast plate that he wore but did recognize the greater protection offered. When the question was presented about the strange symbols he just shook his head and raised his black sword. "No idea, but probably a warning from some glory seeking monster. After we kill it perhaps we should scrape the walls?"

On the subject of any magic cast he nods, "Just be ready with any magics that you notice might help. I think we're all protected and enhanced but short term magics like elemental resistances might matter." When he hears Matin mention Giant size he looks interested, "How long does that last? I can do my own, but only for a minute with each use. I usually wait until I need it...."

No light down here, btw. How are those without darkvision seeing?

You open the door easily enough from this side and you all walk into a large chamber. After a few seconds, the door you came through slams shut. You can't seem to open it from this side. Apparently, it has been enchanted by those who fled this temple to keep... something... in. It seems the sound of the door slamming has awakened the inhabitants of this chamber as you hear a buzzing sound in addition to several clicking noises. A huge, moth-like creature rises up out of a pit north of you while from a pit on the far southeast of the chamber strange, insect-like creatures rise up from a shaft.

K nat for the two different species on the map. Active perception as a move action can tell you something about them from a more common-sense perspective but you may or may not guess as to the importance of the information.

Pyuvir was the only one who won init. Pyuvir, GO!

Before entering, Pyuvir takes Matin's wand and draws out the magic to the best of his ability. He nods at Rhodoh's assessment, and remarks "Perhaps it is better to remain flexible."

He remains cautious as he enters the room, keeping an eye out for trouble. His caution is rewarded, and thanks to his quick reflexes, he takes off running the instant trouble starts. Iv flutters out from under his cloak and acts as his eyes, allowing him to neatly pivot and emit a wave of magical force. Grasping tendrils erupt from the ground, pinning two of the moths and waving angrily at the rest. "Cover the big one, I'll lock down the small ones!" he exclaims.

Can we retroactively declare that Pyuvir cast light on something of Matin's before the shooting started?

Yes that's fine. Teaching in less than an hour so I'll update later today. Just fyi, Pyuvir, there's only one moth-like creature. The rest look kind of like giant termites.

Two of the termite-like creatures are grappled by the tentacles. The moth flies slightly forward and bites at Rhodoh, grabbing him in its great mandibles (14 S/P damage and 8 acid). It attempts to sting him as well but can't penetrate his armor. The termites then move closer toward the struggle. One of them enters the tentacles and is grabbed. The others seem to learn from this error somehow and begin moving around the tentacles.

Rhodoh, it's a standard action to break a grapple, even if you're hasted, so you wouldn't be able to attack as well. I'll assume you still want to go with the escape attempt, which succeeds, leaving you with a swift action and/or move action remaining.

Can you not? I completely read over it if that is the case. I don't recall the FoB ability specifying that you cannot. Just that you cannot gain extra attacks for wielding two weapons. Dungeon racing rules and FAQ

Edit: Ninja'd by Matin while editing. ;)

The description of flurry of blows for a normal monk specifically states that secondary natural attacks cannot be appended to a flurry of blows but unchained monk removes this restriction in its description of flurry of blows. I'm going to assume this is intentional and allow it. It looks like Calardan is appropriately only using 1/2 str to damage as well.

I'm reading over the fly rules and I don't think I need a check for anything I'm doing. 45 degree turns for 5 ft movement, 45 degrees up for half movement, but here's one just in case you think i need it.

Fly check: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

apologies, forgot to state the style strike, which lets me move my monks bonus speed before/during a Full action FoB attack. the movement is 30ft. Doing so again!

Calardan moves towards the closest beetle before trying to stomp it like the bug it is.

He moves up with Matin once ready.

Calardan ends another insect and leaps upward as it explodes in fire, evading the flames. More rush up from the shaft but Matin cuts two down. One, however, closes the distance with him. Somewhere in that shaft, many, many insects are coming to attack.

Sorry. Forgot to say "Everyone GO!" You guys are up again. You can try to find the source of these bugs, flee the room, or try to sit there and outlast them. Up to you.

"OK guys what do we do?" Yells Matin as he fends off the near bug with his shield.

Matin again takes off with a flap of his wings (AoO from one close to him) and flies around the eastern side of the east most pillar landing on the other side of the bugs and attacking the 2 ones that had just emerged. As he lands, he hacks at the 2 bugs with his Bardiche to try to stem the tide of creatures however briefly.

And deactivates his boots to save some strength for later.

Matin, how do you fly and take a full attack as well?

Ah, severe rules violations are my preferred method. Sorry, I’m not really used to having multiple attacks at all (I’m used to low level play) so I was just on autopilot happily using all my glorious attacks every round no matter what. I guess ignore my extra attacks from this round.

Ok thanks for clarifying. No biggie. Pyuvir, Calardan, and Rhodoh may still go this round.

Pyuvir takes to the air, held aloft by the bonds of his fly spell. He drifts casually towards the centre of the room, about 10 ft up (Pretty sure I don't have to roll for that, if I'm reading these rules right), continuing his bombardment. "Perhaps we should move on. It would seem that the bugs will keep coming."

Magic missile damage: 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 2, 1) + 5 = 14 Whichever target seems weakest.

My vote is we move on. Pyuvir has bigger goals than blowing up bugs. He does still have all his high level slots though, so I'm fine to stay if that's what everyone else wants.

Rhodoh moves around the room toward the door. "I agree. Unless someone can cap that hole with webs or more tentacles lets get out of here. Those things hurt when they die and I don't have any healing wands or such with me...."

Move action to open the next door. Calardan still to go.

Calardan shrugs.

I'm fine either way, their explosive deaths don't hurt those quick enough.

Calardan will move towards the door after several others voice their desires to move onward.

Pyuvir, please put your current AC in your status line.

One of the termite-like creatures rushes Pyuvir and bites at him but misses. Another rushes toward Matin but is cut down while another comes out of the hole and meets the same fate. A second new insect emerges from the nest or whatever is down that shaft and closes the distance with Matin and is about to bite him.
