A great time will be had at the caravan. You'll see! You'll wish you were there!

Arin slowly paces around the stopped caravan. Finally he looks at Pai and Kazrin.

Hey! Who wants to learn abyssal? When I get into stressful situations it would help you communicate with me!

Pazacku dismounts Tono and retrieves a pack of trail rations from his bag.

Usually Ori handles the feed. However, I have some rations right here. He then breaks a piece of the travel bread in half and approaches the worg.

With a piece of bread in each hand he tries is best to talk to these thing. "Easy pups. Not here to hurt you. Just trying to figure some things out."

He then ask over his should, but keeping an eye on the worgs. "I wonder why these two would be out her alone. We have not ran across any goblins."

"You are a strange pack."

The worg says in common as clear as any person would talk.

It yawns loudly, revealing teeth yellowed with age but still sharp and deadly. The worg looks at the food.

Diplomacy checks please

Both creatures ears perk up at the mention of food.

"I am old, but have no wish to die this day. Your pack is the stronger, and your trade accepted."

The worg rises from her haunches and approaches closer.

"I am called Feren. That is Mola."

Mola rises as well. "The hunt fares poorly. The hungry take what they find." The worg sniffs indifferently.

Feren comes nearer. "The great packs from the past buried their long dead here."

Feren sidles up to the rations carefully, before wolfing down the offering. The second part she threw to Mola.

"Now a new hobgoblin pack comes, one I do not recognize. Yes, Hobgoblins, this I know. They turn ... turn the land and take the dead, human, goblin, they care not what it is and the stinking corpses walk."

Yes, that was it. I... cannot say exactly why it happens. It seems to be a curse that accompanies my divine abilities. I can invoke a limited set of spells, but I'm not a priest or follower of a specific diety, per se. Let's see... what words might be useful for you to know?

He ponders thoughtfully for a few moments, with his hand on his chin. Then some ideas come to him.

Let's start with these...

The abyssal for undead is....:
mgn'gha

The abyssal for lightning is....:
mgn'ghftor

The abyssal for food is....:
bthnkornah

The abyssal for magic is....:
r'luh

The abyssal for good night is....:

The abyssal for nightmare is....:
fhtagnshogg

The abyssal for aeons is....:
Syha'hnahh

The abyssal for dreams is....:

The abyssal for death is....:

He bellows the harsh, guttural utterances and then looks to her to see if she can repeat them.

Innocently presuming that she agrees with his choice of words, he confirms with There you go! Some basic conversational starters.

Giovanni hoofs it back to the camp with the others.

Earlier, during Arin's lesson:

It takes a lot of practice for Pai's bubbly voice to bend enough to properly utter the harsh sounds of the Abyssal language, but eventually she gets it. She carefully writes down all the words so she be sure to remember them. "Who knows? This might come in handy some day."

Currently, responding to Giovanni

"Oh! Yikes. Hobgoblins are making skeletons? Huh. That sounds bad. Yeah, we should totally take them out. I'm all about live and let live, but undead and their makers cross the line! They get no mercy in my book."

Assume we're all on the same page and will move as a group to rout the hobgoblin camp.

The path winds its way through the Chitterwood until it forks at the foot of a large and mangled tree.

A large tear runs the length of its trunk, splitting the tree nearly in two.

The southern half of the tree hangs awkwardly to the side, casting a shadow over a small dip in the land.

A small cave entrance lies partially hidden beneath the southern half of the tree.

The forest path leads the you to the entrance of an old cave network.

You assume that Goblinoids once used these shallow caves as a supply point during the Goblinblood Wars.

This might be subject to GM interpretation, so happy to play it as you deem appropriate but the flat-foot description suggests that you lose your DEX bonus until you have you first "regular" turn in the initiative order. It has been interpreted both ways that "regular" is to suggest "non-surprise round" or any action taken. Here is the verbatim text from the handbook. Again, happy to do as you like. Emphasis mine, below.

PHB wrote:

Flat-Footed: At the start of a battle, before you have had a

chance to act (specifically, before your first regular turn in
the initiative order)
, you are flat-footed. You can’t use your
Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) while flat-footed. Barbarians
and rogues of high enough level have the uncanny dodge
extraordinary ability, which means that they cannot be
caught flat-footed. Characters with uncanny dodge retain
their Dexterity bonus to their AC and can make attacks
of opportunity before they have acted in the first round
of combat. A flat-footed character can’t make attacks of
opportunity, unless he has the Combat Reflexes feat.

Perception Pai : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

Reflex : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Pai walks forward to avoid cover but she doesn’t see the pit trap in front of the group. Her reflexes save her and she is able to hit the skeleton anyway and incinerate it!

Giovanni can feint and his attack stabs the backbone of the skeleton letting the bones fall to the ground.

Combat over.

Giovanni makes double sure no other attackers are present and sheaths his rapier for a moment. Well then, I suppose it's going to be dangerous down here. Best be on our toes. Is anyone injured?

Giovanni wanders over to the western door. He gives it a look over before moving on.

Wow, good job Pai! You sure know how to handle the undead.

The other gnome walks over to the pit and looks down.

Good footwork too.

Then, acknowledging Van: For lack of an objective idea, I say we go west, and not straight ahead. This trap tells me it would be going straight into danger.

Staring down into the pit that she almost fell into, Pai mutters."Huh. Wouldn't ya know! Jerks." Brightening, she quips: "Sure, let's go west! ...I'm just gonna make sure to go around the giant hole in the ground this time. You know. Just for fun and all."

You give each other the nod to open the door.

Inside, you see that the southern half of this room appears to be furnished as a dining area, complete with a long wooden table, several chairs, and shelves sporting a collection of crude pieces of crockery.

A large altar of stone dominates the northern half of the room. Rusty chains set along the northern wall and the dried bloodstains covering the stone altar hint at this room’s function.

More importantly, three armored figures occupy the room, one standing amid the bones laid out on the table, towering over the room, and two with bows ready on the far side of the table.

"More bodies for the mistresses ranks!" the hobgoblin on the table crows. His form is hazy and indistinct around the edges as he hefts a scythe.
