Society - Night in Nightarch

Please dot and introduce your characters. You will be starting on Absalom Station!

Since we are in Absolam Station, I am going to assume we are likely to meet in the Lorespire Complex, probably in a waiting room...if not just excuse the comments about the waiting room.

A tall human gentleman strides purposefully into the waiting room. Looking around, he sees that he apparently was the first to get there, that or maybe his assistant app had the wrong time or day.

"Ellen, am I at the correct time and place for my meeting?", he says to his wrist computer.

"Affirmative. You are apparently the first one here," a cheerfully perky female voice comes from the wrist comp.

Sighing, he looks around. Seeing that the coffee maker has not been set used in a few days...that or maybe the coffee the Starfinders are preparing is supposed to have that green tint to it, Ray decides to forego getting anything to drink.

With that he quickly looks around, realizing there is only chairs in here, and no tables. Shrugging, he goes over to one chair, reverses it in front of another, sits down in the 2nd chair and puts down a toolkit on the first chair. With that, He drops his tote bag carrying all the weapons and armor he thought he might need to bring on this mission next to him. He then he pulls out some tools from the kit and starts to tinker on some kind of mechanical item that might be useful to help with his research missions.

Muttering to himself, "A grappler...probably should have one of those. I am certain that will be useful in some of the missions they send me on..."

I know that he needs a workshop. Just figure he is lightly messing around with gears and such. Plan on buying a grappler after this scenario "pretending" he made it...burning your Downtime/Day Jobs Roll to build items is annoying, but I can see the action economy of it. Plan on starting to do that for important equipment.

Only a few minutes after Rayburn started tinkering, a short human woman joins him in the room. Her dark hair is tied back away from her face and she's wearing a sleeveless vest. At first glance, it looks like her arms are bare. It quickly becomes clear that she's wearing a second skin close in colour to her own reddish skin, as the fabric ends at her left wrist to show a metal prosthetic hand.

She finds a chair near to the other person, putting her backpack down on the ground before taking a seat nearby. He seems to be tinkering with something, and it's a struggle for her to not look too curious. She soon gives up and leans closer to him, partly to get his attention and partly to get a closer look at what he's doing. "You here for the meeting too?" she asks, holding out her metal hand for him to shake. "I'm Zybrie."

Doing a quick glance up as the other human in the room speaks, Rayburn realizes he was pretty engrossed in making the gears.

"Why yes, I am here for the meeting, at least that is what Ellen verified for me." He motions to the wrist comp on his wrist as he mentions Ellen. "I am Rayburn Giordano. Friends call me either Ray or Geo. Nice to meet you, Zybrie."

Just noticing how Zybrie eyes seem to more stray to the gears he is working on than his face, he chips in," I am a xenoarcheologist by trade, so knowing that the items I use are both in top condition, and how they are constructed is very important in the field. I am attempting to build a grappler. I figure that something like that would come in handy in many situations that the Society seems to put me into. Care to take a look at what I have done so far?"

With that, he holds out the gears and pulleys that is the beginnings of the mechanism for the grappler to retract back the cable when it is activated.

A lithe, strong-looking young elven woman walks in on the two humans as they are examining the device between the two of them. She watches them briefly from the doorway with wry amusement, remembering the team that she went through her Commencement with not too long ago. She wears her dual-colored black and red hair back out of her face into a neat, but attractive tie, looking both aesthetic and practical at the same time. Her armor looks like a basic Freebooter-style, and she has a small pistol holstered under her right arm. Everything else seems to be contained in a sparsely packs backpack.

"Hello. I'm M'linda Songshine, formerly from Castrovel. It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintances." She offers her hand in greeting to each in turn. "I'm afraid I don't know much about building or maintaining tech, but I can generally hold my own in a fight. Hopefully it won't be necessary, but I'll be ready, should it come to that."

"Nice to meet you too, Geo," Zybrie says with a grin, looking down at the gears and pulleys in his hands. "And yeah, thanks, I can never turn down the opportunity to take a look at someone else's tech." She leaned slightly closer to get a better look at the mechanism-in-progress. "I prefer working with circuitry myself, but I've dabbled with all sorts of creations. It looks like that'll be handy when you've finished it."

She didn't notice the new person in the room until they spoke. Zybrie looks up at M'linda's 'hello' and reached out to take her hand and shake it. "It's always good to be prepared," she says, nodding at the pistol under M'linda's arm. "I'm Zybrie."

A woman in a form-fitting armoured suit moves through the doorway, eyes flicking at inhuman speed as she scans the room and assessed the occupants.

She moves over at a steady pace and tilts her head slightly, causing her fibre-optic hair to cascade to one side.

Hello. I am Valkyr thirteen. I assume you are the designated team for this mission. You may call me Val.

Her voice sounds like it is modulated, measured, with hardly any inflection. She does not blink.

She gestures to the large, wide-barrelled laser rifle strapped to her back.

I am a first-line combatant, trained field medic and pilot. Who are you?

She flashes a smile but it seems a few milliseconds too brief.

Another human quietly walks into the room. His short black hair is a bit messy and it doesn't look like he's shaved in a few days. He takes a moment to look over the group as well as the layout of the room, noting where all the doors are. He finds a seat so that his back isn't to a doorway.

"The name's Max. Nice to meet you all. I have a variety of skills that may be useful and can handle myself in combat if needed," he says, patting the pistol at his side. "But given the chance, I'd rather talk my way out of a problem than resort to violence. Not to say I wouldn't be the reason for the problem," he says with a laugh.

"Zybrie, so do I normally, Ellen here is something I worked on that has a lot of circuitry. But needs must, as they say...and being out in the nowhere lands looking at ancient civilizations means having technological items, both circuitry and mechanical."

As people start to meander in, Ray realizes his quiet time to work on his project is over, so he quickly stashes it and the tools away. Getting up he quickly moves towards the two new ladies.

Realizing it is time to let his charm shine, he flashs a smile at both of them, "Ladies, I am at your disposal, so let me introduce myself. I am Rayburn Giordano...though my friends call me Ray or Geo. I am a Xenoarcheologist, a tinkerer and a bit of a dabbler in the mystic arts."

Looking towards Val, he looks over her equipment and smiles even broader,"Guessing that you might be preferring ranged combat. If we deal with something big, stay near me....I can juice up your rifle to well beyond anything it is spec'ed for....just have to touch it for a moment."

As the next person coming in interrupts his talk with the elf and android, Rayburn walks over to the new person. "Hello there Max, welcome to the team. Looks like whatever mission the VC's have cooked up here must need specialists...we seem to have a variety of fields here. Names, Rayburn, though friends call me Ray or Geo." With that he holds out his hand to shake Max's.

Zybrie nods along as Rayburn speaks to her, but more people arrive in the waiting room before she has the opportunity to reply. As Rayburn stashes his tools away, Zybrie looks over at the new arrivals.

"Hey," she says, raising her hand in greeting. "I'm Zybrie Eovalla, but I prefer just Zybrie. Most days I'm an electrician, but I thought I'd branch out and sign up for whatever this mission is. Geo. I am glad you have shared knowledge of your abilities. I will ensure to recall what you have said if combat ensues.

She glances around at the others, nodding at M'Linda, eyes lingering momentarily on Max's pistol and Zybrie's rifle.

Indeed it does appear that a diverse group of differently skilled individuals have been assembled. This makes me recall a recent film I watched called 'The Revengers'. Next we will have a small red wise-cracking and angry alien appear that gains power when they are angry!

She glances towards the doorway and seems almost sad that no such alien appears. She turns to Zybrie.

It is good to meet you Zybrie

She offers her hand to Max, Geo, M'Linda and Zybrie, seeming to revel in the experience of shaking hands with each of them.

Analysis of your facial articulation would indicate that either you are the 'guy' of which you speak or simply that you very much enjoy the grey areas of this socio-ethical interaction. I will add the designation 'scoundrel' to my internal dossier of you Max Deverell, I hope you find this appropriate and agreeable

Society - Night in Nightarch

The doors to the east of the waiting room which you have all gathered in, finally open as a very rushed lashunta comes running in. He checks his device on his wrist and taps it trice. Darn thing forgot to adjust the daylight saving's settings. I am so sorry to keep you waiting. I had forgotten...er, was consumed by preparing the important mission details for you all. The man adjusts himself and looks everyone over. What fine Starfinders stand before me. Thank you for being so patient with me - a promising tenant of every good field agent. I see that you are all eager to begin, please follow me.

The doors to the office slide open with a soft pneumatic hiss. Inside is a well-lit and blue-carpeted office. Venture-Captain Arvin, a handsome and determined-looking damaya lashunta. He moves to sit behind a desk, his eyes riveted on a glassy display. After a heartbeat, he glances towards the open door and motions everyone to enter. Be seated if you like, although this shouldn’t take long.” Arvin taps a button on a console and murmurs to a digital assistant, “Croyd, put everything on hold for a few minutes. If anyone calls, please explain I’m in mission briefing and I’ll get right back to them.” He then darkens the display to give his full attention.

“Right. I have an assignment for you. This one is a little a different than others you might have received.” He pauses before he explains, “It’s an internal matter. You’re probably aware that after the Scoured Stars incident many of our colleagues elected to leave the Society. That is unfortunate, but not surprising. We hate to lose good field agents, but no one is conscripted into our ranks. Normally we wish them well and that’s that. In this case, the defector, former field agent Reynald Talbot, stole an artifact from the Lorespire Complex before departing. Theft is where the Society draws the line; I need you to get that artifact back." He gives you a hard look. Those of you who have met Arvin before recognize that he is serious about this.

“Unfortunately, Talbot left weeks ago and we only discovered the theft in the last 24 hours. We launched an immediate investigation to determine the identity of the thief and their last known whereabouts. It’s our bad luck that Talbot was smart enough to get off the station and head to Akiton, where there’s no central government or law enforcement to easily call upon. I need you to track him down and recover the artifact. We know Talbot caught a shuttle to the Akitonian city of Maro, so that’s a great place to start. The Society will, of course, cover your travel expenses.”

Culture, DC 10:

You know basic information about the Pact World of Akiton. It is smaller than the Golarion standard with ×1/3 gravity and a thin atmosphere. This means non-acclimated people, like you, can jump three times as high and carry three times the normal weight, although you gain no additional movement speed. Likewise, unless you wear any type of armor, you must succeed at hourly Fortitude saves or become fatigued. You also know Akiton suffered an economic crash when the revelation of Drift technology rendered the numerous pre-Drift fuels mined on Akiton virtually worthless.

Culture, DC 15:

Akiton is generally lawless, except for whatever laws a local authority might impose. Akiton survives on trade and commerce. Strangers find loyalty hard to come by, especially in the big cities. Newcomers are consequently likely to be observed and watched, especially if an organization believes it can take advantage of the strangers. If Talbot acted or did anything at all out of the ordinary, someone is likely to have noticed. To avoid being found, it is unlikely he stayed in Maro for more than a few days.

Culture, DC 20:

Wealth is hard to come by on Akiton. If Talbot fled to the red planet, he did so for a reason. It’s likely the ex-Starfinder had a plan, and that plan involved gaining a large number of credits. Given Akiton’s unstable economy, such a surge should be identifiable for those who “follow the money.”

Talking to Val after her comment about Max. "Val, dear, Max is just trying to tell me he has channels to possible tech that might prove useful to me. And as you say, he might be a 'scoundrel' but he is a Starfinder Society 'Scoundrel'. Our society needs all sorts of people, and trust me, while some might find the grey sector 'distasteful', sometimes the society needs to deal with that. And I, for one, am grateful to have somebody who knows their way around the...shall we say shady side of life.

Rayburn walks in following the VC. He doesn't really worry about sitting--as he has sat enough already. He casually leans against the wall, looking over Arvin's office. When Arvin starts the briefing, Rayburn hits the record on his wrist comp....always useful to have the briefing to review.

Culture: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Rayburn's 'artifact' senses start to tingle. [b]"An artifact you say. From our vaults? Do we have any sense of which artifact was stolen...just using a little of my abilities, I know that a lot of those artifacts are beyond dangerous--to others, and especially the user."

And sighing in hearing where they are going, "Ahh, Akiton. Vast majority of that place is a squalor. A good place for people who want to hide though. There are numerous towns, and also wrecks of all kinds across the planet. Been to a few of the starship wrecks myself, on archeological digs looking at ones that happened during the Gap. Because of that I know the planets language...well as well as a non-native of Akiton can at least."

Zybrie is intrigued by Max's comment about getting materials at a good price, and she grins at him. "Sometimes, things need to be a bit grey," she adds once Rayburn finishes speaking, but before she can say more, the Venture-Captain arrives.

She follows the others into the office, choosing to stand, hands in her pockets, instead of taking a seat. While the Venture-Captain talks to his digital assistant, she glances around the room and takes in the impressive decoration, but once he begins the briefing, her full attention is on him.

Zybrie's eyebrows rise as they receive more information about the mission. She's tracked people down before - although usually on the behalf of less respectable institutions - but it's been a while. At Rayburn's question about the artifact, she looks curiously at the Venture-Captain. She won't be surprised if he doesn't tell them what it really is, but it sure would help if he does. As for the thief's escape to Akiton, well, she had hoped she wouldn't be returning to Akiton so soon, but at least she'll be able to communicate with everyone. "I grew up on Akiton, so I'll be able to make conversation there as well. Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Maro. The only time I visited was to get a shuttle off planet."

Valkyr13 turns to Rayburn and tilts her head as she listens to him talk about the necessity of grey areas.

Geo. I understand. Nuances are important, knowledge of grey areas is of high value when operatives must navigate multiple systems and laws. I did not intend to cause any concern or offence.

She whirls on Max and fixes him with softly glowing eyes

Max. The designation of scoundrel is equal part acknowledgement of your experience 'knowing the shady side of life' and also your debonair demeanour which indicates a happy go lucky adventurer. It is an informative designation and not meant to cause concern or offence.

She flashes a smile at Max, then turns back to Rayburn but further discussion was halted as the VC enters and speaks.

Following the group in to the office she stands still and listens to Arvin.

Reynald sounds like 'Renard', one translation of which is 'fox'. This is a fitting designation for someone now to be hunted. What an interesting syzegy.

She nods as Rayburn reels off his own experiences of Akiton.

It is good you can speak the native tongue Geo, Zybrie. This will make things. Easier.

She stares in to space for a split second

I have only superficial knowledge of the Akiton planetary object and will be of limited use navigating its social dynamics, however I am told that in such places fortune favors those with the largest armaments

She flicks her head back, her hair rising like a tidal wave that breaks on and for a moment outlines the large gun on her back. She smiles and pans between everyone with a slight grin.

So. If the society are able to lend us a ship I can fly it. If not that is also fine. Either way I am ready to leave now.

After greeting the others with a firm handshake, M'linda blends into the background and listens to the others as they converse. This is why I fight, she thinks to herself.

The arrival of Venture-Captain Arvin stirs her from her muses and she follows the others into his office.

On hearing the details of the mission, M'linda finally pipes up "I'm afraid I have no further information to share. Having only recently come from Castrovel, all I know about Akiton is no more than common stories. Hopefully my skills will be of more use once we arrive."

She turns to the Venture-Captain and ask "Is there anything in particular we should know of this Reynald Talbot? What are his particular skills that could make him difficult to capture?"

Arvin looks to Valkyr13 with a smile. "That is a really good pick up. Interesting name for this man. His file lists no known connections on Akiton. Of course, our data isn't perfect, but I expect he is working on his own. Unless he used the artifact for some foolhardy plan." He shrugs his shoulders and continues. "As for Akiton, it has a thin atmosphere, and we don’t have the luxury of giving you weeks to get used to it. It would be smart to make sure you some way of coping with it, or some armor. Any armor, even the lighter sets, offsets the difference.”

The venture-captain then turns to Rayburn with a serious expression. “Good question. Taking on a mission without full understanding is reckless." He pauses a moment to think, then continues. "But the answer is complicated because it’s actually two questions: what the artifact is and what Talbot thinks it is. We’re operating under the assumption that Talbot thinks he’s stolen an object from old Golarion called a philosopher’s stone. Legend has it that the stone could transmute matter, among other properties. What Talbot actually stole was recently re-cataloged as a charlatan’s stone. It does something similar, except the effect is a potent illusion and only temporary. We think ancient con artists used to make false gold.” He laughs, setting his hands down on the desk.

"Talbot is smart, capable, a bit brash, and a reasonable field agent. He is also self-entitled and ambitious. After the Scoured Stars incident, he expected to be promoted to venture-captain, but the Forum felt he needed more time. He got angry. We think this theft is retaliation. Maybe he hopes to use the stone.”

”I want the stone back. Talbot’s not worth the expense of dragging back here, so you can do whatever you think is necessary with him. That said, you don’t have a license to go on a mass killing spree. Don’t make the Society look bad. It might be tough to do on Akiton, but don’t take that as a challenge." He looks at each of you individually, making sure everyone knows he means business.

"Interesting item, a false philosopher's stone....the 'charlaton's stone'. Very nice name. It seems a very nice item for a brash, capable field agent to take, especially if he didn't know it was only temporary. It is also a dangerous item, to himself and to the others he uses to scam. This item does need to get back to the safety and security of our vault."
I successfully resisted the urge to say "It belongs in a museum!"....Yeah, Rayburn is slightly a Indiana Jones/Han Solo mismash, but I am trying to keep his tropes to a minimum (somewhat) :-)

Seeing that Arvin means business on Talbot's life, or lack there of, Rayburn nods. "I don't normally condone killing, as it is hard to get information from a dead person normally. But it might have to come to that. And I have no desire to be in the same shuttle with him on the way back."

Max listens intently to the answers, although his mind wanders a bit when he hears what the artifact can do. "Imagine what I could do with that," he thinks to himself.

When the Venture-Captain locks eyes with him, he snaps back to attention and gives him a salute as a sign of understanding. "He did said not to go on a killing spree, right? Yeah, that has to be it. A VC wouldn't tell a group of Starfinders to go on a killing spree," he thinks as he tries to recall what was being said while he was daydreaming.

When the last of the group joins them, Max gives him a nod and then returns his attention to the Venture-Captain. Not coming up with any other questions, he waits for the others to finish. He takes a moment to do an inventory check in his head to determine if he needs any equipment before the mission starts.

Don't worry too much about boons if you don't have any. They don't really matter much in my opinion anyway.

After a few hours to prepare, the group reconvenes at the ship. Settling into your favorite spot on the standard Starfinder vessel, you get ready for lift-off. After a couple days in the Drift, your shuttle goes back to regular space, outside the observation windows floats Akiton, a world the color of blood, rust, and red clay. A thick shell of white caps both poles. The shuttle descends toward the planet, and a barely perceptible shift in gravity occurs as the ship’s artificial gravity begins to lessen and the planet’s natural gravity begins to take hold.

From suborbital heights, a handful of small towns, large complexes, and industrial sites that spew noxious fumes into the thin atmosphere surround the trench city of Maro. A spidery web of dirt roads scratched into the rust-colored ground by regular traffic connects these sites to the metropolis.

Maro, the so-called City of Lights itself, comes into view as the ship begins its final descent. The city occupies more of a vertical space than horizontal, built into a six-mile-long section of trench that is half as deep and a half mile wide. Entire neighborhoods and business districts are built into the walls, accessed by patio entrances. Lights, neon signs, and holographic advertising bejewel either side of this urban canyon, while an active spaceport and industrial zones occupy the ground level. As the shuttle lands, it does so beneath the backdrop of an immense mural of brightly glowing neon-green graffiti that reads in Common: “Git Out! Planet’s Broke!”

How do you want to proceed in investigating Talbot’s arrival? Some suggested skills are: Gather Information, Culture or some Profession checks. But good roleplay may allow some substitution skills.

Zybrie made sure she had everything she might need packed in her backpack before meeting the others at the Starfinder vessel. She claims a spot near the observation window as her own for the duration of the flight, and spends the days in Drift calibrating her weapons and the custom rig she'd built into her brain.

She gazes out on her home planet as the shuttle descends. She hadn't looked back when she left, so she's never seen Maro from space. The lights look beautiful from above, but she knows that the city itself isn't as pleasant as it looks.

Before leaving the shuttle, she slips her battleglove onto her left hand and makes sure her other weapons are easily accessible. She doesn't plan on fighting anyone, but she knows the dangers of Akiton. Backpack on, she exits the shuttle and chuckles at the graffiti. "Well, they're not wrong," she mutters.

When the others are out of the shuffle, she turns to them. "So, where do we start? Just ask around and see if anyone knows anything?"

I'm untrained in Culture and not sure if Profession (Electrician) will be any help. Gathering Information is probably a good place to start.

Thankfully, you know Talbot’s time of arrival and the specific shuttle he flew in on, so you have a solid starting point from which to poke around. You split up in your groups for about an hour to see what you can find out. And although some of you aren’t so lucky, Kellus and Zybrie are able to find some critical information. Kallus tracks down one of his connections through his line of work, who is very helpful. Zybrie manages to fix the engineering problem and make some friends who are more than willing to share what they know about the man you’re looking for. You soon discover that Talbot departed to small mining town called Tasch a few miles outside of Maro.

Now that you have determined where Talbot headed off to, you can head to the nearby mining town of Tasch. Getting transportation to Tasch is not difficult, only taking an hour to find a dune buggy for rent. The Starfinder Society pays for your travel expenses, so you get the luxury model! (All four wheels included!)

The elongated dune buggy transports the group from Maro into the red dunes of Akiton’s surface. The journey only takes two hours, with the buggy driver stopping just outside the city limits to let you off, before continuing to other peripheral towns.

A long dusty road, lined with single-story dwellings, runs through the town of Tasch. Some powered vehicles rest chained to their owner’s homes. A small general store stands near the center of town, illuminated by flickering white lights. Another building, full of locals, hosts a signpost that reads “Digger’s Dive”—clearly the town bar. Although the sun beats down on this desert town, its citizens meander around the bar in good cheer. Most are ysoki and humans, with the occasional lumbering four-armed shobhad mingling among them.

Where to next gang? I hope everyone is enjoying the pacing.

A good choice!

You approach the center of the town’s social life, the bar! Digger’s Dive is a single-story structure built using imported wood. There are no windows, but there are small rectangular openings in the exterior walls at ceiling height to allow for ventilation. The front entrance is a swinging waist-high wooden half-door.

Passing through the door, you are assaulted with the smell of spilled bourbon, sweat and dried blood. Faint electric lights dangle from the ceiling, while the open sky is visible from cracks between the planks that serve as a roof. The floor is solid wood. The interior walls and ceiling supports are mud brick, the latter being carved in a rare attempt at ornamentation. The tavern is divided in two halves by an energy field with an opening on the northern end. The bar lining the southern wall is open to either side, with a wall of half-empty bottles behind it. The tables are wooden and makeshift, but solid. The east end has square wooden platform about a foot above the floor. Two sets of double doors are built into the northern and southern walls on the west end, both ajar. A single closed door provides an exit behind the west end of the bar. Through the backdoor hums a power generator and water condenser which keep the bar running.

As you enter, a loud cheer rings out from the several miners and their families who occupy the bar. "Huzzah!" A female ysoki slings drinks behind the bar, calling out to you. "Hey there strangers! Come to share in our good fortune?"

DC 14 Perception:
