Witch's Winter Holiday

You have been summoned to the Pathfinder Lodge of Katheer, the capital city of Qadira. The lodge is a high-ceilinged estate with elegant arches and colorful tile mosaics, and a young man brings you cool tea for drinking and water for washing away dust before leaving you to relax and introduce yourself to your compatriots while he notifies the venture-captain.

Cirri continues scribbling into her notebook. Various animals, birds, fish, especially coastal stuff.

And of course, she has drawings of harpies. Plenty of them. Different colored feathers. Various Plumes. Lengths and stripes of all kinds. So much scribbling!

She finally notices you and slams her book shut before pulling out her spellbook. "Oh hi. I'm Cirri! Good to meet you." She shakes hands as needed before pointing at a faerie dragon. "And this is my good friend, Riddywhipple. Say hi, Riddy."

The tall man enters the room with a strong regal presence. His belt was full of potions, vials and other concoctions that made a tinkling sound as she strode across the room, without a care in the world. ”This is my first mission in some time. Must be a doozy to call me out of my job. Cirri, eh? I’m Fahd. I suppose I’m the muscle for this little oeperation.”.

He sipped at his tea, eventually drinking it all down, before waving over the server for a refill.

Out of nowhere, a glass filled with to the brim with mead slams down in front of Fahd. A Tian man clumsily seats himself in the chair opposite of Fahd—a black monkey’s tail swishing hypnotically behind him as he does so.

”Tea is the drink of the weak! The man pulls out a flask—embedded with the image of a stone monkey—with his tail just flavor, he can’t actually do that. ”That oughta get your buzz going!”

He takes a swig from the flask before staring curiously at the faerie dragon. In one motion, he jumps up and gets uncomfortably close to the familiar and his master—the odor of booze becoming much more apparent as he does so. ”Riddywhipple? I’ve seen you before, haven’t I? But not with this chick. Servin’ around, have ya Whippley? How many masters have ya got, eh?” Noticing Cirri and Riddywhipple becoming extremely uncomfortable I assume, he lets out an obnoxiously loud laugh and flops back into his seat.

”The name’s Masa…” A loud belch bursts forth an echoes throughout the estate. The man clutches at his right breast. ”Ooh! Nasty heartburn!” He takes another swig from his flask. ”As I was saying: the name’s Masayoshi.”

A fair-skinned masked woman with electric blue hair and eyes, dressed in loose-fitting silks enters the room. Her mask is white and covered in glowing blue runes, with strange angular projections off the back.

Perched awkwardly on her shoulder is a strange quadripedal creature covered in white fur, with a long snout and whose front legs look like folded-up wings. On the tip of its right wingtip, it wears a ring.

"Hi there, everyone! I'm Ninlil, and--oh, those are interesting!" she says as she catches a glimpse of drawings of feathers.

"Anyway, it's a pleasure to meet you. I am Ninlil, of the esteemable land of Dilmun. And this is my emissary of that land, Snaggletooth." She gestures at the animal on her shoulder.

The masked woman returns to reading a book she brought in with her: "The West Winds of Ninshabur."

The tiny animal says, in a surprisingly articulate voice for something with so many tiny teeth sticking out of its snout, "I am pleased to make your acquaintance. While my powers are weak here, I may be able to assist you in some small ways. I can certainly see well enough through this --" its voice breaking up as its image flickers and wavers "--turgic projection."

A Shoanti man with broad shoulders and tribal tattoos stands motionless in the room and looks at you intently.

When he starts speaking with a thick Shoanti accent and deep voice the satisfaction to be able to compete is clearly evident.

"A test of blood and sweat awaits us and I am ready for it! I will enjoy this mission if the rage in my heart can meet the cunning of the plane of air. My name is Crowe! And you should be happy to have me with you - the gods blessed me with primal energies of air that no one can stop ... especially not the enemies of the Society!"

The servant approaches the gathered Pathfinders. ”If you will follow me, the venture-captain is ready,” they say with a bow.

As the door opens to Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi’s office, he sits behind an imposing desk and concludes an elegantly penned letter with a flourish of calligraphy. He smiles, stands, and spreads his arms in welcome. “Welcome, my guests and colleagues. Let my family’s hospitality be your pleasure in this time we have together.” He fans the wet ink on the letter before setting it aside and taking a seat.

“To an outsider, it may seem that gold drives Keleshite society, but in truth it is a complex network of favors and patronage—who you know and how you have helped them are key. The Society is in a position to pay a very dear favor to a powerful and righteous demigod, yet our leaders require extraplanar expertise in order to perform said favor. Through my family, we have found such an expert who lives on the Plane of Fire. Her name is Qalkami Mishalq, an efreeti information broker in exile who also prefers favors to gold. The fire genies are notoriously shrewd negotiators, yet I believe the Society has secured a fair deal: four tasks of her choosing, and additional support thereafter to help her reestablish herself in the City of Brass.

“The Society and I ask that you fulfill these favors and earn Qalkami’s assistance. Kelesh maintains a significant embassy in Zjarra, the trade city Qalkami currently inhabits. With my family’s connections, I have secured you passage to the embassy and the assistance of a liaison to help you get settled. From there, meet with Qalkami and do what you can to fulfill her requests. Please report to the palace first thing tomorrow so that you do not miss the departure.”

”In the meantime, perhaps I can answer some questions?” he finishes pleasantly.

Crowe just stares at the Venture-Captain and is unimpressed by his kindness.

"Fire ... hmmm ... so tell us: Which powerful and righteous demigod are you talking about? And what kind of favors do you think this fire-touched Qalkami will ask of us?" Crowe asks with his rumbling voice.

Cirri is shocked as the drunken man runs right up to her face and glares at her. Riddywhipple laughs. She's too bundled up to say much before the man returns to his seat and she relaxes.

"Oh, yes. Feathers. From all kinds of birds. Do you go bird watching? Sometimes I'll find all sorts of aerials flying about when I look for fish." Cirri mumbles to distract herself.

When the Venture Captain introduces the mission, CIrri asks an obvious question. "Do you know what favors we'll have to do? I'm not gonna do anything evil, that's for sure!"

”Crap! Sounds like something I have to be sober for.” Masayoshi pulls out an entire bottle of whiskey from his satchel and pours himself a shot from it. ”I’ve been stuck in the frozen wasteland of the Crown, so some warmth will be inviting.”

He downs the shot in one unceremonious gulp. He looks over at Cirri as she asks her question. ”’Evil’ is subjective, my dear chickadee. What is considered justifiable to one could be considered evil to another. The Society’s goals are to uncover the mysteries of the world and to make a name for ourselves—quite a noble purpose, but think about it another way: we also place ourselves in situations where we don’t necessarily belong in order to fuel ourselves by demanding compensation from those we forcibly ‘helped.’ It’s for that reason that many consider the Society as a parasite. Everything ain’t black and white, sweetheart.”

Masayoshi downs another shot of whiskey before turning to the Venture-Captain. ”And why on Golarion were we negotiating with an information broker who takes IOUs over hard cash? Has the Society learned nothing from the Torch fiasco?!”

"Not everything is, but I won't subject myself to do anything I might regret." Cirri focuses. "I don't like the idea of owing someone unspecified favors."

Esmayl smiles at Crowe. "Why, the Duke of Thunder himself, Ranginori!" he says, arms spread wide.

In response to Cirri and Crowe's other question, the venture- captain nods in understanding. “This might involve some dirty work. The contract prohibits impossible tasks, yet it doesn’t account for ethical concerns.” He takes a polite sip of date wine before adding with a smile, “Though I’d note that just as efreet often twist wishes, you are free to interpret her instructions to fulfill the letter of her request, if not always the grisly spirit. Just be careful not to warp her demands so obviously or blatantly that you invalidate the Society’s deal. The isle of Jalmeray sometimes challenges its greatest minds to outwit an efreeti, and Pathfinders are among the greatest thinkers. You be the judge based on the opportunities that arise.”

Esmayl turns his smile to Cirri and her last question. “The Plane of Fire is hot," he says, "as should come as no surprise. Zjarra has a protective dome that makes it merely warm, making it a rare place for fiery creatures to interact peaceably with combustible foreigners. Step outside the dome only at your peril.”

Cirri, I'll get to the rest of what you remember about the Plane of Fire with that check after the exposition. Remember that roll - we'll use it later.

And to Masayoshi, he grins and responds, "Friend, I assure you we would be happy to explore other avenues to the information we seek, but this has been the only one to bear fruit. Perhaps you know of another?" He sips his wine again, one eyebrow raised above smiling eyes.

He holds his glass in one hand and asks, "Are there any other questions about this mission I might shed light upon?"

"Well, I need to buy a scroll of Resist Energy. The communal kind." Cirri ponders. "Riddywhipple can cast it usually, but can anyone else use it?"

Magus life. I need a DC 25 UMD check to cast it. Ninlil shouldn't have a problem either. The scroll costs about 700gp. Do I have time to buy it?

Masayoshi scowls and looks away from the Venture-Captain, clearly defeated. ”What else do we know about this Qamimal or whatever her name is?”

When Cirri asks about the scroll, Masayoshi simply raises his hand. ”I plan on preparing for the fire myself as well.” If we have a day to prep spells, then Masayoshi will prep Resist Energy and Communal Resist Energy instead of Lesser Restoration and Cure Serious Wounds, respectively (what’s in my character profile is what I usually prep—if I prep differently then I’ll say so).

"All of this preparation is a good idea- CIrri sunburns easily. One day she went birdwatching, flew up a spire for a good look and forgot to prepare some magic to climb down. She had to spend the entire afternoon out there before she could renew her magic. She was red like a baboon's bottom!" Riddywhipple laughs uproariously as Cirri turns a deep shade of red in embarrassment. Or maybe she's approximating her sunburn, you're not sure.

"Oh! I-I'm so excited to be able to work on Ranginori's liberation! Like the smell of a flower carried on the breeze, this is simply the excellent to hear!" She tries to focus on the task at hand. "I follow the Duke of Thunder's edicts to help others. I know it's important to free our Lord of the Air, but if we can do so without too much compromise I would find that more... spiritually justifiable."

"What do we know of this Qalkami, and why does she need to reestablish herself? Does she have any particular enemies we need to know about?"

To Cirri, she says, "Oh! I already have such a spell in my spellbook. I suppose taking a scroll along as backup couldn't hurt, though. If you'd like to copy the spell, though--I'm sure we can find some time for that!"

Apparently nobody read the part where the VC says you leave tomorrow morning, so yes, you have a chance to prepare appropriate spells.

As the conversation turns to Qalkami, Esmayl frowns. “What I know is secondhand," he says. "You’d be better served learning what you can in Zjarra. That said, Qalkami’s extended family fell from the City of Brass’s good graces several decades ago or more. She’s kept her head low to avoid her enemies, most of which seem content to let her live in relative obscurity. This means she’s not bargaining from a position of insurmountable strength, but she’s hardly negotiating from a point of weakness. She could no doubt find other assistants beyond the Pathfinder Society, so don’t assume you’re holding all the cards.”

He smiles again. "Perhaps I can ease your minds about something else? Or shall I show you to your quarters for the evening?"

A Nagaji enters through the still open door, fastening his mountain pattern armor "I am sorry, I was dozing of in the sun and must have fallen asleep. I am sure my fellows will enlighten me to the task at hand."

He then continues to fasten his armor. You notice the bulk of muscles and the curved blade he wears on his back.

"I guess that's it for now." Cirri doodles some bird drawings very important notes down. "Tomorrow we visit the plane of fire."

"Hey Ninlil, can I copy some spells from your book? I wish I had more time to learn some of these spells, but this whole magus path kinda messes stuff up. I want to hit things with my staff, so sacrifices must be made."

"Oh, I'm sorry! You were asking about my identity. I love making jokes, blowing bubbles, and pranks. I do wish Cirri would loosen up a bit, but oh well."

"And you, Snaggletooth? Where do you hail from? Cirri's going to be buried in spellbooks all night, so it's nice to speak to someone in a similar position."

"Ahhhh, so then let us get a good night sleep! Tomorrow I am ready to travel to another plane! Ha ha ha! It will be glorious!" Crowe says laughing.

Esmayl sets down his glass, stands, and bows to his fellow Pathfinders. "Excellent! Please allow me to show you to your quarters, and perhaps you would be willing to join me for supper later this evening? And whatever you do, do not be late tomorrow morning - the envoys won't wait for you."

Quite possibly the second largest city on the Elemental Plane of Fire, Zjarra is devoted almost entirely to trade, and it is one of the most popular destinations for extraplanar merchants traveling to the plane. In order to accommodate these travelers, the city boasts a massive, crystalline dome that protects the inhabitants from the plane’s broiling temperatures.

Knowledge (Local) DC 25+ or Knowledge (Planes) DC 30+:
Designed to accommodate travelers from all kinds of locations, Zjarra has embassies representing a number of different planes and worlds, many of which host creatures even stranger and more alien than the Plane of Fire’s own inhabitants. The city features a diverse array of climates and conditions to support these unusual guests.

Knowledge (Local) DC 30+ or Knowledge (Planes) DC 35+:
Creatures from the lawful plane of Axis founded Zjarra, and even though the original axiomites left long ago, many of their inevitables still frequent the city, keeping the peace.

The Plane of Fire Cirri, this is where you can use your earlier roll

Knowledge (Planes) DC 10:
Almost everything on the Plane of Fire is made of fire, lava, or something else that burns. Outside of rare safe spots where powerful magic keeps the plane’s flames at bay, it is extremely dangerous.

Knowledge (Planes) DC 15:
The main inhabitants of the Plane of Fire are azers, efreet, fire elementals, magmins, mephits, and salamanders. The City of Brass, a magnificent hub of interplanar trade and the capital of an efreeti empire, is the plane’s largest city by far.

Knowledge (Planes) DC 20:
Efreet are among the most powerful of the plane’s inhabitants, and they consider themselves the plane’s rulers. Most efreet are cruel and callous, and the City of Brass is renowned for its extensive slave markets.

Knowledge (Planes) DC 25:
Most efreet pride themselves on their cleverness, and many are shrewd negotiators. Efreet are often summoned by mortal spellcasters hoping to coerce them into granting wishes, but most efreet are able to grant the letter of a wish while subverting its spirit, causing it to backfire on the wisher.

Fahd goes through his usual contacts to find any information available about the city. ”This is about the second biggest city on the Plane. It caters to the merchants. Trade is really big there. And like was said earlier, the large dome should keep us from bursting into flames due to the heat!”


Witch's Winter Holiday

As the sun rises over the desert, the Pathfinders make their way to the satrap's palace. Two lavishly dressed officials meet them, and - after confirming their identities and mission - escort the party to a room filled with a large stone dais engraved with intricate runes. "This is our dedicated transportation room," one of them explains. "It's linked with a similar room in the embassy in Zjarra, allowing transport between the two planes with exact precision."

After joining several Keleshite merchants and ambassadors on the dais, the Pathfinders find themselves suddenly in a nearly identical room - but the stiflingly warm air betrays their arrival on the Plane of Fire. As they step off the dais, a human in blue silks beckons them over.

"Allow me to be the first to welcome you to Zjarra," she says with a graceful bow. "I am Yasmine Zamara, embassy liaison to the Pathfinder Society and your host during your time here. Please, follow me."

As she guides the Pathfinders through hallways blending Keleshite stonework with the shape of flames, Yasmine continues, "You will find many creatures here that might be considered 'monsters' on the Material Plane. I assure you, they are law-abiding citizens here and I would ask you refrain from murdering them in the street. That being said, you are certainly entitled to defend yourself if attacked."

She opens a set of double doors to a bright and bustling city. Far above stretches an enormous crystalline dome, and beyond it a sky of swirling red and orange inferno. The air is hot and thick, reminiscent of a humid jungle. The lush jungle plants that seem to fill every inch of space not occupied by roads or buildings only reinforces the notion.

"I understand that you have been tasked with serving Qalkami in order to gain information for the Pathfinders," she says as she turns back to the group. "From what I'm told, it's a worthy endeavor. But you should take care not to underestimate Qalkami: she is cunning, clever, and ruthless, even for an efreeti. I'm fairly versed on the political realities here in Zjarra, and I have a few connections. If you have doubts about any of the tasks that she sets for you, I'm always happy to provide any insight I may have, especially if it means avoiding criminal activity or minimizing chaos."

She folds her hands and bows again. "Can I answer any questions for you, or shall I give you directions to Cinderstone Manor?"

Cirri spends the night scribbling spells into her spellbook until she falls asleep. RIddywhipple wakes her up long enough to escort her to bed.

In the morning, Cirri tries to learn what she can about the City of Zjarra.

"Well, at least the city is protected by a dome that turns the climate from broiling hot to merely toasty. Reminds me of the summer trips near the equator!" She grins. "Anyway, Zjarra is a trade city, and it has many embassies representing different planes and worlds. There are a variety of climates and conditions set up to help accommodate the visitors and merchants there."

"Oh yeah, I was thinking about the Plane of Fire. Unsurprisingly, it's hot. Effreet rule as the head honchos, and they have a pretty big slave trade there." Cirri shakes her head solemnly. "You will also find azers, fire elemenals, magmins, mephits, salamanders- basically if it's immune to fire, it can live there. The biggest town is the City of Brass."

"That reminds me- I need to buy that scroll!" Cirri runs off and purchases the scroll of Communal Resist Energy, just in case.

Cirri returns and dresses down a bit, using a dark blue robe to help redirect intense heat. She also has poofy sleeves and brings more waterskins than needed. Once she's in the plane of Fire, Cirri is wide eyed and taking plenty of notes, drawing whatever shapes she can, and nodding along with Yasmine Zamara's introduction.

"Don't worry, I don't normally murder people, not even in the street." She half heartedly follows along. "Are there any other social issues we should avoid, besides killing things that don't look like us? I'm sure this lady is smart, but I don't want to get in hot water over anything I don't fully understand."

Toctep, to clarify, we're in a smaller city called Zjarra - not the City of Brass.

Yasmine laughs pleasantly at Cirri's question. "I'm afraid it will be all but impossible to avoid the politics here," she says with mirth. "Favors and intrigue are the name of the game. That said, I will do my best to shield you from the worst of the maneuvering, and I'm always happy to offer advice if you have need - especially in regards to what Qalkami may ask of you."

"And no, travelers from other planes are just as safe here as the locals," she says to Toctep. "The embassy has simply had to resolve a few too many... diplomatic incidents... where a newcomer thought they were being threatened by a citizen merely going about their business. I prefer to nip such things in the bud whenever possible."

Again, she folds her hands together. "Can I be of any further assistance, or shall I direct you to where Qalkami awaits?"

Yasmine is also able to secure equipment and goods through the embassy - provided you pay upfront.

Ninlil casts an extended False Life at CL+2: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 prior to plane shifting, and will use two charges from her wand of mage armor, one on herself and one on Snaggletooth. She then uses another point from her arcane pool to swap false life for frigid touch.

Yasmine frowns slightly. "I was certain we sent all the information we have about Qalkami to the Society when we helped draw up the agreement between the two parties," she says before her smile returns. "No matter. Qalkami is an efreeti with the strength of a fire giant, the dangerous elegance of an erinyes, and most easily recognizable by the fiery scar running down one side of her face. Do not underestimate her - she is incredibly dangerous. Her extended family fell out of favor with the ruling family of the City of Brass some decades ago, and she's been living here since. She's an information broker who prefers to deal in favors rather than gold, and she has little use for generosity or mercy. Again, if you have doubts about any of the tasks that she sets for you, I'm always happy to provide any insight I may have - especially if it means avoiding criminal activity or minimizing chaos." She then points the group towards Qalkami's home and bids them good luck.

Following Yasmine’s directions, the Pathfinders locate Cinderstone Manor. As they follow a stone path through the yard of smolder coals, the party has plenty of time to take in the building’s domineering, gothic-style edifice of scorched adobe that towers three exaggerated stories in height and is topped by several spiked spires. The path ends at an ornate brass door with a knocker in the shape of a snarling hellhound, the ring cast to resemble flames pouring from its mouth.

An azer servant answers the door. After confirmed the party’s business with Qalkami, he invites the Pathfinders to a lavish sitting room outfitted with large chairs upholstered in ruddy, heat-resistant leather and tells them, ”Mistress Mishalq will be with you in just a moment.” before departing.

"Fancy. I see why she doesn't really need the money." Cirri whistles. "I think I'm pretty smart, but I'm more of a magic person than a social one."

Cirri plops down on a seat and waits.
