Letswalo is in good humour. He has acquired a fine new shortbow, and arrows to launch from it.

His good mood blunts when he is reminded of Fort Breakthrough.

"In short summary, we found the bodies of those stationed there, and an attempt by lizardfolk to frame the local halflings for the deed."

The Sheriff stared at the Northman. "I was not suggesting you go spend the coin right this moment, Thorongil. And, I am well aware of the issue with the wandering troll. Also, you have an hour before we must depart for the meeting. Not two. The meeting with the Count is important and he does not appreciate tardiness and neither do I. Please be mindful of this. I will meet the three of you at the eastern gate in an hour and we shall proceed to the count's estate"

Thorongil returns the gaze of the sheriff, but he says nothing, his eyes flat as he regards her without comment.

Turning, he gathers his companions with a glance and then exits the room swiftly.

GM Ariarh of the Storm wrote:
The Halflings whom Thorongil wished to interview all reside and work within Stone Hall. They all appear well, being they were never in any danger inside the stone walls of the inn and on higher ground. They also appear busy serving food and drink to those still settled in the dining room and merely nod and smile at the Northman upon his inquiry into their health and well being - attempting to reassure him all is well with them. He is satisfied they are not in any danger or have suffered any losses during last eve's storm or attacks.

Thorongil watches the Halflings work; his northern sensibilities annoyed as he sees them laboring. The independent nature of his folk rankled to observe men who could work to serve themselves lounging about while others catered to their whim, but he says nothing on the matter, merely glad that the Halfling are alright.

GM Ariarh of the Storm wrote:
Nooria had sat quietly, eating and drinking, during the general conversation around the table with the Sheriff. Upon Thorongil's query, she looked across at him and merely smiled, "I will. Earlier, I checked in with the healers at the Countinghouse of Abadar. Your previous female companions were there, no harm had befallen them during the course of the night, and were busily attending to the injured and circulating rations. Oliya was bickering with a drunken fellow named Theos Votto who spent the night sheltering at the countinghouse. He had suffered some minor scratches and bruises, but was attended to and so he left to return to his home right before I left to return to Stone Hall. So, it will only be the three of us attending to Count Narsus' invitation this day." Looking to Letswalo, she added, "If you're looking for weapons, then best we go see the smithy, Vethorn Valgardson. Perhaps he'll have a shortbow to sell you."

Thorongil nods his head.

"I am glad that our friends are safe; this is a good thing," he says with a smile, but it is also clear that despite his genuine enthusiasm for the condition of his friends he seems somewhat worn out from the long night.

"Even so; I wish we could have seen him off properly," he adds.

GM Ariarh of the Storm wrote:

Upon knocking, you are granted entry into the manor house via a young male servant and ushered into a formal sitting room. Already present are Count Lethar Narsus (a bespeckled man in his early 30's). In addition to the count and sheriff, the other two members within the circle of advisors are people of some influence in town: Banker Baldra Sifreth and the count's personal financial advisor, Hamsa Gadd. (Human female, 5'6", slim build, shoulder-length, straight red hair, pale skin, golden-brown eyes. Dressed in brown tight pants, brown skirt, knee-length leather boots, brown vest, green armour, rapier at her hip.)

"Good morning. Count Narsus, these people are my agents: Thorongil, Letswalo and Nooria."

The nobleman leader gazed at you keenly and then gestured for you to take a seat at the ornate chairs placed around his finely-crafted wooden desk in the room.

"Welcome to my home. It is good to finally meet with you. Please go ahead and tell us what you've discovered at Fort Breakthrough and the events that have come to pass since then."

Thorongil bows to the man and is prepared to speak, but he observes that Letswalo is addressing the Count.

Letswalo wrote:

Thorongil turns his gaze from Letswalo and continues.

"The facts are clear that the Halflings were meant to take the blame for actions of these lizardfolk," he says with a firm voice.

"Those who are friends of this colony and these lands would be wise to seek out these lizardfolk," he adds.

"Further; that they have been seeking to damage the reputation of the Halflings suggests that we should seek those people and do what we can to placate their concerns for such implications."

"Do you have any further thoughts, lady?" he asks her, curious to know what she may have to offer.

As Thorongil waits for a response, he leans back in the chair and stretches his long legs before him comfortably as his eyes stair thoughtfully at Nooria, curious to know what she will add to their opinions.

The count, through his spectacles, cast a quiet look on the three assembled agents before him and his Councillors. He silently nodded upon the words of the two male agents. The beautiful woman with the fire-red hair caught his attention and he merely and politely awaited any further words she would share with the Council.

Nooria caught Thorongil's eyes first and then noted the Count's gaze focused on her thereafter. A faint blush spread across her alabaster cheeks. She breathed in softly and then began to speak; her accented. melodic voice filling the chamber in gentle waves,

"As my companions have conveyed, it appears a local tribe of lizardfolk have attempted to place blame on the Song'o Halflings for the murder of the soldiers at Fort Breakthrough; perhaps to cause strife between the colony and the Halflings or as a diversion for some malicious intent. We have managed to vanquish four Lizardfolk in last night's fight, yet there are certainly more, waiting for word and to attack the colony. I feel we should set out to find the remainder of the Lizardfolk and address the foreseeable threat." Nooria gave a polite nod before composing herself to hear the Council's thoughts.

Count Narsus returned the polite incline of head toward the priestess and setting his writing quill down, he stood up from behind the desk.

"My hope for this meeting was to pool the knowledge of all in the room so we can decide on how best to defend the settlement and surrounding farmlands."

By his very manner and his strong belief in protecting Pridon Hearth and all its people, you can gauge that the Count is well-intentioned although perhaps inexperienced in his role as leader.

"I would see Pridon Hearth grow into a place where hard work can secure any family a legacy and land for generations to come. In this, I would like to announce that I wish to explore the jungle..."

However, before the Count could continue further, the woman nearest him, his financial advisor, Hamsa Gadd, stood from her chair and interrupted, "Count Narsus, you have suggested a fine plan, yet as leader of this colony you cannot put yourself at such risk. Such adventures should be left to those truly versed in bold inspections and explorations." A quiet, general cheer rose from the other Councillors upon Hamsa's alternate suggestion and the woman smiled and inclined her head as if humbled by the show of support. Their encouragement was enough to embolden Hamsa to continue,

"I believe these agents - adventurers - who reported the massacre at Fort Breakthrough - and now deputies of Sheriff Adaela - are the most qualified to investigate the jungle and any impending threats." Once again there was quiet sounds of approval for the idea by advisor Baldra Sifreth.

Sheriff Adaela, who had been listening to Hamsa's plan to send in her agents, quickly spoke up, "I have come to believe the Mireborn Lizardfolk could be responsible for the storm which fell upon us last eve. However, I know little of their tribe and have only heard rumours of their presence in the northern jungle. Earlier scouting expeditions of years passed have reported of seasonal camps to the northwest, near some Ghol-Gan ruins, and, to the northeast, near a bubbling tar pit; yet never any farther south." Adaela's gaze remained on Hamsa.

The financial advisor quickly spoke up again; ignoring the Sherriff, instead looking to the Count,

"Aye. I, too, believe the Mireborn have a hand in this, however, in good conscience, I cannot rule out the Song'o as co-conspirators. Thusly, I would humbly encourage our agents here to visit the nearby Halfling village first and demand answers from the Song'o."

Count Narsus appeared somewhat conflicted by the urgency to seek out the Halflings, yet he respected the wisdom of his advisors for without them he would be lost. He looked to the trio, Thorongil, Letswalo and Nooria, wanting to hear their thoughts in regard to the expedition suggested by Hamsa.

Male Human - (Gladiator 1), Bard (Archaeologist 2) For: 3 Ref: 7 Will: 4 Perc. 8 AC 18, TT14, FF14, HP 26, CMB +6, CMD 17, Init +4

Thorongil notes the silent angst between the Sheriff and this other woman – Hamsa Gadd.

Hearing that they are to be selected to explore the surrounding terrain in an effort to learn more of the threat that may harass the town is a worthy endeavor to him, however. The more facts that are discovered then the better able they will be to deal with those things which are a true danger to the community.

The insistence of the financial advisor to investigate the Halflings is something which bothers him, though he cannot wholly explain why. Both the Sheriff and the priestess, Nooria, follow deities that demand honor and integrity. To suggest that either of them would lie about what they witnessed was impossible – to suggest that they had not done a proper job in gathering details to present an accurate case to the Count would be disrespectful; yet it seemed that this Hamsa was implying it subtlety, but to what end?

Being a man of action and having little patience for subtle plans or nuances he turns and studies Hamsa with a neutral expression.

Sense Motive on Hamsa to gauge further details on her reaction with the Sheriff
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

”With respect, Lady, the issue regarding the Halflings seems to be one that has been resolved and all facts point to the fact that a conspiracy fostered by these Lizardfolk was born to delay us in discovering their true purpose.”

He glances from her to the Count.

”My Lord; you speak of the potential growth of this colony – enlarging upon its greatness, not simply for the coming years, but for generations? Surely those qualities which shall enrich the growth, stability and security – indeed, even the prestige – of such an endeavor, would require alliances with those communities already well-established. Strengthening good relations between this Song’o Halfling tribe will improve all of these things for the colony, as well as its legacy,” he adds, gambling on the hunch that the Count would be most impressed with the chance to cement his own legacy with the community, as well as encourage stability and the rest.

He turns back to Hamsa.

”I have no quarrel with confirming the facts we have discovered with the tribe, yet with the storms we have seen I fear we are pressed for time.”

”Given the first-hand testimony of myself, my companion Letswalo, the honorable priestess Nooria, as well as the excellent testimony of your own sheriff; why should we have cause to delay the investigation further by first visiting these Halflings?”

His tone is absolutely courteous, yet his meaning is clear – to suggest that Nooria or Adaela would be in error would be an insult to their experience; to suggest that they might be deceptive would insist that at least the Sheriff herself should demand satisfaction for such an insult, especially if she and Hamsa had issues between them already.

EDIT: regarding earlier Sense Motive Check - I have no idea what her real thoughts are, but it's clear that she doesn't seem to trust us, and I can understand that. But not trusting the Sheriff and (also) seeming to have issues with the Sheriff is somewhat suspicious to me/Thorongil no matter what I roll. But maybe that's because I've watched too man "Small Council Meetings" on Game of Thrones, but something about her bothers me, but I don't know what. So I'm going to play out my suspicions based only on the information posted, unless, of course, my roll reveals the real reason she is being weird with the Sheriff? But I guess I'll find that out soon :)

Thorongil was suspicious of the woman; perhaps because she was a financial adviser, and in his experience people interested in worrying about money did not often have time to worry about matters of honor or compassion – yet something about how she reacted with the Sheriff bothered him, though he was not sure what it was.

However, not wishing to push the matter too severely, he reigns back his intensity a bit.

”I do not wish to imply anything negative, of course, but your desire to speak with these Halflings first seems to be born out of something more than mere guesswork. If you have specific facts or reasons which we should first investigate the Halflings then sharing those details now would be most helpful,” he adds with a softer and more polite tone.

After all, perhaps I am misreading this. There is clearly a power struggle in this Council; perhaps this Hamsa is merely attempting to marginalize the advice of the Sheriff before the Count simply to enlarge her own position?

It is also a fact that this tribe of Halflings seemed rustic and “uncivilized” compared to the folk in this colony, further; the Halflings in the community seemed like indentured servants rather than true citizens. Perhaps her concern about their trustworthiness is merely born out of the natural distrust and contempt that folk with money often see those folk who are poor?

But perhaps there is more to this than I know? Even so; I do not have the right to push her too harshly until I learn more details. If she knows more than what she has said, it would be best for me to let her explain what information she has about these Halflings rather than make assumptions about her…

”Your pardon, then, Lady, I do not mean to seem critical. Instead, I merely wish to learn any specific information or evidence regarding why we should first investigate these Halflings. I beg you to share any further facts or details with us as it would surely assist us in our investigation,” he adds with a courteous voice to Hamsa.

Diplomacy Check to not only demonstrate to the Sheriff and the Count that he wishes the Colony to succeed and thinks that the Halflings as allies would help that; but also to suggest to Hamsa that he is not trying to be rude; but, instead, that he merely wishes to have information before visiting the Halflings.

Thorongil's Sense Motive Check of 9:

You can gauge from the the way Hamsa Gadd is treating/handling and reacting to Count Narsus that she feels she has his ear more readily than the other advisors, or that she perhaps exerts more pressure and influence on him due to her persistence. This may explain why she is confident in steering the conversation and attempting to override Sheriff Adaela's advice/voice. You don't readily trust in this kind of influence. Anything more, you cannot tell at this time.

Hamsa's face did not give much away as she listened to the tall Northman, Thorongil. She gave him a small smile before taking on a more serious visage and responding gravely,

"Unfortunately, I was part of an ill-fated exploration of the surrounding wilds, Deputy Thorongil. The Song'o ambushed my party and killed all but me. The raid happened at night before I could take my morning bearings. I cannot tell you the exact location of the camp that night; only that it was east of town. Since that terrible night, I hold little trust in the Halfling tribe. So, my suspicions are warranted, Deputy." Hamsa Gadd turned saddened eyes toward Count Narsus and lifted her hand as if to wipe away an errant tear.

From her place in the circle of advisors, Sheriff Adaela rolled her eyes at the woman's theatrics; knowing of them all too well since her arrival in Pridon's Hearth. "Count Narsus, I am mindful of Hamsa's unfortunate expeditions; however the settlement was most fortunate to overcome the recent storm's wrath this time and it was largely due to the hard work of the deputies and townsfolk. There is a much larger storm offshore, drawing nearer every day. If the Mireborn Lizardfolk have anything to do with the strange weather patterns, our priority is to seek them out first and put at end to their plans if the town has any hope of overcoming the much larger hurricane."

The Count looked between his advisors, weighing their respective arguments and rubbing the bridge of his nose where the spectacles had began to pinch.

He cleared his throat and then spoke,

"Hamsa, I am still saddened by the loss of your people and the Song'o may or may not be forthcoming. Indeed, I would see the Halflings become our allies for they know the jungles better than any of us. Deputy Thorongil has made a fair point toward forging strong alliances. The Sheriff's words have me quite concerned at this point for how much more can the town endure - being ravaged by endless storms will ruin us to be sure. So, with that in mind, I believe the priority is finding the Mireborn lair in the lands surrounding Pridon's Hearth and stopping any sinister magic they are using to control the weather. If, during their travels, the deputies come across the Halfling tribe, they may make some inquiries, as you have suggested." Count Narsus gave his financial advisor a small, reassuring smile.

Moving away from the desk to stand before the three deputies, Thorongil, Letswalo and Nooria, the Count continued in due seriousness,

"If you three agree to take on this task, I will offer a substantial reward for the defeat of the Mireborn and an end to the storms. What say you?"

M Human Spy 3 - HP 18/18, AC 15 / For: +1 Ref: +5 Will: +5 / Init: +2 / Per +8 / SM +9,+11 / Conditions:

Letswalo lets the talk sink in, then adds his own, with more passion than his companions have usually seen him express.

"With due respect, I will add that my prior profession involved a great deal of investigation of criminal and rebellious elements. The sort who aimed to stir up strife and conflict. The planted evidence at the fort reeked of the same sort of malfeasance, and I would see the lizardfolk punished for the deceit as well as for their murderous acts. While I do not rule out any possibility of halfling complicity, I find it unlikely given the circumstances."

Diplomacy to stymie Hamsa' objections: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 = 11

I surprise myself. That old fire isn't quite extinguished it seems.

"I will gladly take reward after the deed is done, and the threat put to an end."

Thorongil glances at the interaction between Hamsa and the Sheriff and notes their attitudes but says nothing.

He then listens to the Count and then Letswalo and nods his head.

"We would be delighted to accept any due compensation to aid you in the task with regards to bringing guilty individuals to justice, My Lord," he says, somewhat cryptically.

"Nevertheless, rest assured, we shall do whatever we can to find those responsible," he adds with a courteous voice.

It suddenly occurs to him to be more precise in his language.

"Tell me, My Lord, what is the nature of the reward that you are offering?" he asks, not really caring, but curious to know how the Count plans on compensating those who aid him.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Nooria inclined her head toward the noble leader and quietly added her acceptance of the venture and reward offered them. "We will do all that we can to ensure the future of Pridon's Hearth, Count Narsus."

Sheriff Adaela nodded approvingly, from her chair, as her three agents accepted the task set before them. Only when Thorongil asked the Count what the nature of the reward would be that she groaned inwardly at the man's lack of tact.

Lethar Narsus' disposition changed from one of relief and happiness upon the acceptance to fretfulness. He attempted to mask the latter as best as possible as he stood before them.

"Ahem, yes. Firstly, I offer your party the deed to a small plot of land within the town walls. The deed will remain binding only until a permanent structure is erected on the land and you live or run a business there for a period of two years. You will also receive three potions of barkskin (CL 3rd), a stipend of 500 gold pieces each to be used to purchase goods and services for your expedition into the jungle and a bird feather token in case of emergency."

The Count quietly cleared his throat before adding, "I will need to contact Baron Utilinus in Eleder to request additional gold for saving an outpost of Saragava. However, if all goes well and the Mireborn are subdued or destroyed and the unnatural storms have been permanently stopped, I would be willing to give you three thousand gold coins in total upon completion. I believe this is a fine reward for any adventurer."

Letswalo looks quite agreeable to this offer.

"That all sounds quite reasonable, my Lord. We aim to deliver, and soon. I would rather get to the business of living a quiet life once things are quiet.", he finishes with a quip.

Now, what to buy?

Hearing the Count's offer Thorongil stands and nods.

"Many thanks, My Lord," he says with a courteous bow.

"In which case I assume you would prefer that we begin at once?" he asks.

As he waits for his companions and looks at the Sheriff.

"Begging your pardon, Sheriff; perhaps you can provide us with a map so we know the best areas to explore."

He waits a moment for her answer before leaving.

If there is no further business Thorongil will leave with both Nooria and Letswalo and head to purchase gear for their mission, though if there is a map of where the lizardfolk may be, or at least, where they might be, that would be very helpful.

Realizing that time is short Thorongil turns and leaves the room.

If the Sheriff has a map, no doubt she will provide it.

If not, he will travel with Letswalo and Nooria and attempt to secure the best arrangements for their supplies for the journey.

"Yes, Deputy Thorongil. The sooner you start, the better for the colony," answered the Count in polite voice.

Hearing the question directed at Adaela, Count Narsus smiled and moved back toward his desk. Finding a rolled parchment among the other paperwork, the Count picked it up and offered it to Thorongil.

"This should help, although there is wilderness land still yet unexplored. I am certain with your party's expert skill, you will mange to traverse the areas you require. Best of luck," The Count nodded encouragingly.

The Sheriff cleared her throat and stepped forward, "If that is all you require from us this day, then it is best you begin preparing for your exploration. I shall see you to the door," Adaela inclined her head to the Count and other concillors and walked out the room with the trio.

By the open front door, Adaela advised, "The territory around Pridon's Hearth consists mostly of unexplored marshlands, tropical hummocks and grassy lowlands, with the edge of the true jungle - what we call the Jungle of Hungry Trees - beginning further east. On the map you will see my cousin's plantation, northeast of Pridon's Hearth. My cousin, Jheri "One Arm" Praet grows dika along the marsh there. If you are exploring that region, can you please check in on him and make sure he is alright. I am worried since the storm. I will pay you 300 gold pieces when you return to town, if you do this for me. I wish you luck." And with that, Adaela turned on her heel, closed the door and returned to the Count and councillors.

(Please note: Each hex on the map equals 12 miles and requires 8 hours to cross thanks to the rugged terrain (or 5 hours on horseback), and, 2 full days to completely explore (1 day on horseback).)

With no chance to offer her any response Thorongil turns to the others to see what they think.

"Regarding what gear we should purchase? I believe that depends largely on where we wish to explore first," he says to the others.

"My heart yearns for the sea, of course, and I would wish to seek out what mysteries lay upon the island to our west."

He sighs a bit in consternation.

"However, the Sheriff has made a request that we see to her family. While I do not care overly much for the Sheriff, as we have no other obligations I believe it would be wise to see on her family first."

"Further, it is close to the colony; thus, when we discover what mysteries lay there we can readily return should we need to gather more resources. Or we may elect to continue, should we need to?"

He looks at the others, curious to know what they think.

"In any case, my mind is currently bent on the prowling troll. I would see that we are outfitted with proper gear before we advance if such a creature is out there," he adds.

If we go to the Sheriff's family's house first, then I would advise we get some alchemist fire (2 bottles a piece?) as well as a bow for Letswalo. Further, rations would help, but if the place is not that far, Thorongil will likely do most of his "big shopping" after getting the details for the Sheriff and returning to the town. This way we'll have more money and - in-game - whatever we find regarding the Sheriff's family is something he would likely wish to report at once.

Nooria's bright amber gaze settled on Thorongil as she heard the Northman admit he disliked the Sheriff.

"I believe the Sheriff is a fine lawkeeper and good woman, Thorongil. I am sorry to hear you do not care for her; however I entreat you to be more tolerant for she has given us esteemed positions and paid us well for the tasks we have performed in her service. I am amiable to heading to Jheri's Plantation first and returning to resupply and head back out again. Shall we hire horses? I can ride a little and it may save us some time. "Aye, that foul thing could do with killing. I will pick up acid and flame to prepare for it. Feel free to pick them off my body and use them should I fall first.", he finishes on a morbid note.

Letswalo seeks a masterwork short bow, 3 vials of alchemist's fire, 3 vials of acid, and 30 arrows. If he cannot find a masterwork short bow, he'll go for a mundane short bow.

"As for direction, the plantation sounds a fine plan. Resupply and get further into the good graces of the Sheriff. Makes sense to me."

Thorongil frowns a bit as he considers the Sheriff.

"I agree with you completely; she is clearly an honorable woman and she also adheres to the law with the best intentions."

"However; a northman is true to his word and, once given, he performs what he has committed to or dies in the attempt."

"Even so; while I have pledged to aid the community by acting as her deputy, I have not pledged to bend the knee to her - and yes, I serve at her pleasure as a man who is committed to bringing justice to this community alone, yet I do not like being treated as if I am but a servant," he says, then shrugs.

"But I will honor your request and be more patient with her ways. I apologize if my manner has not been courteous," he adds with a sincere voice and a bow of his head.

"The plantation is near to us; if we are agreeable let us travel on foot with what gear we feel our beast can manage to carry, if we ourselves are not hale enough to manage."

Thorongil's eyebrow quirks at the comment.

Thorongil nods amicably at this.

"Well, then; let us see to your gear."

As they prepare to shop a thought occurs to Thorongil.

"Letswalo, you seem well-versed in matters of trade and commerce. What say you to the plan of this property? If we are to claim land here, as offered, how shall it be dealt with? What should be established on such land, do you think?" he asks, curious to know what Letswalo will suggest when it comes to what sort of business would be best on such property.

He pauses and glances at Nooria.

"And you, lady; do you have any suggestions on such matters?" he asks her as well.

Letswalo thinks a moment before replying to Thorongil's questions. He has now seen something of Pridon's Hearth and its people, after all.

Knowledge Local on what businesses might flourish in this place: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Knowledge Nature on what profitable flora and fauna might thrive here: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

Profession Clerk on how best to wrest good coin with this deed: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Survival on any features of this town that might be turned to profit: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 4 = 18

Letswalo's re possible business opportunities:

From your general observations of the shops, merchants and occupations of the colonists in Pridon's Hearth, you have discovered the following areas which could be suitable as business prospects for your group:

Carpenter, Lumberer, Gunsmith, Silversmith, Printer/Publisher, Milliner/Fabric & Haberdasher, Chandler/Candle-maker, Cooper (to make casks), Sugar & Spice Merchant, Accounts Keeper/Scribe, School Teacher, Librarian, Town Watchmen, Caravan guides/scouts and Tea Farmers.

Letswalo: Profitable Flora:

* Dika is very popular plant in this region. Dika are notable for their edible yellow fruit, which somewhat resembles the mango. Dika seeds are rich in a fat used locally to make both bread and a type of butter or pressed into cooking oil. The dika seeds can be ground and used as a spice to flavour bland foods. The wood of the plant is very hard and is used locally in building construction. Currently, the Sheriff's cousin, Jheri "One Arm" Praet own and runs a large and successful dika plantation which supplies the colony.
* Bananas
* Taro (corms and leaves) - Root crop that grows well in humid tropics. Like most root crops, taro does well in deep, moist or even swampy soils with plenty of rainfall.
* Sugarcane - used for sugar as a fine spice or the coalesced honey within the reeds to be dissolved in water and used as medicine to relieve intestinal and stomach issues and painful bladder and kidney issues.
* Tea Leaves - Tea grows well in semi-shade in tropical climates, away from frost.
* Herbs/Spices - Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Ginger (great for medicinal purposes and as cooking spices).

Letswalo: Profitable Fauna:

* Fish, mussels, squid
* White-Tailed Deer - excellent stock for venison
* Working donkeys - pack animals great for expeditions or transporting through the jungle.
* Spider monkeys for exotic pets
*Leeches from the local bogs/swamps/marshland - used for medicinal purposes/blood letting
* Boar - reared for cured meat, roasted meats and bacon

Letswalo: Clerking:

In a small colony such as Pridon's Hearth a clerk could make good coin from account keeping for the local businesses and merchants or from acting as scribe for those less educated in town or for local expedition parties.

Letswalo: Town Features:

* The high walls around Pridon's Hearth could be useful in offering protection - for those who want to protect their more important assets from harm or theft - plus the town itself is on higher ground so less risk of flooding. Great storage prospects. Island Town is close to the river and could be a good location for a lumber mill, although risk of flooding is higher due to being so close to the docks and ocean.

Having listened to Thorongil's reply, Nooria thought silently, I have never felt like a servant to the Sheriff. What a strange reaction from this Northman. Perhaps he has not come across a strong law-woman in his lands or travels and is unaccustomed to such.

Nooria gave a gentle smile and merely replied politely, "As leader in charge of the welfare and protection of this new colony she gives us instruction and we must do our duty as her deputies. Do not see it as servitude or her desire for us to bend the knee. She has asked for neither; at least not of me since I have come to this land. "For more specifics, Dika profits from fruit, seed, and wood. Hence, the sheriff's cousin's plantation. Bananas, taro, sugarcane, tea leaves, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger round off the flora that would earn serious coin here."

"And the beasts. Donkeys for work, leeches for medicine, spider monkeys for pets, white-tailed deer for venison, boar for meats, and fish, mussels, and squid for seafood."

"I agree that proper schooling will be needed to cultivate the minds of the future colonists. But for now, I notice a distinct shortage of clerks.", he finishes with a smile.

Thorongil does not disagree with her in any way and it’s clear by his expression that he is thinking about what she said.

At this Thorongil lets out a bark of laughter.

”It is said among my people – Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing…,” he says with a grin.

”You Southlanders are a strange bunch, my friend. The sages teach that a thing, once set in motion, shall never cease its advance unless it is halted by a force that is greater than it; a truth which cannot be countermanded – why not cleave to it with how we live our lives, eh?”

Then he shakes his head and put aside the matters of philosophy and considers the mission before them.

”But there are many things which must happen here before we concern ourselves with the imposition of unjust strictures. For now we must first attend to those,” he adds, his mind tacking to the task at hand.

Nooria wrote:

Saying nothing, he glances at Letswalo to hear his opinion.

Letswalo wrote:
"That makes sense to me. I am also in agreement."

He nods.

”That is good. This is rough country; horses may have trouble traversing the terrain without roads or trails to walk upon. This is worth considering on the journey; if the land is truly untamed we may find horses a liability if we travel over broken hills, loose rocks or flooded terrain.”

”We must consider how dangerous things may be for a mount on this journey, I think. If the land seems safe enough then horses shall certainly be helpful in the future.”

As this he loads his gear on the animal in question and prepares to leave he listens to the others talk.

He hears Letswalo’s words and for a moment his mind considers the seas and their grey uncertainty, but even as the vastness of their reach tugs on a longing within him, he glances at the clustered houses nestled within the confines of the complex and shakes his head to clear it of the wanderlust so common in Northmen.

He then hears Nooria's words and says nothing, listening to what she has to say.

Thorongil says nothing but seems to perk up at this comment, his hand absently patting the dog-eared journal in his satchel resting next to the ledger containing lore on how to better survive in the wild.

He considers Letswalo’s answer to Nooria’s earlier statement.

”Such a job would be useful to the citizens. There are many young people here that could benefit from a place to enlarge their lore. Yet imparting knowledge successfully is not as easy as having knowledge,” he says, considering this option.

Cinching the straps of the packs around the mule he turns his gaze to the north.

”Well, my friends, these are fine things to consider. Let us ponder them further on the trail as we make haste to our destination.”

If the party has purchased the gear they need, Thorongil is ready to head out. If not, what more do we need to buy; also, is that something we should RP out? If not, I’m ready to go :)

As the party finished purchasing their weapons and other gear in preparation for their trek to Jheri Praet's plantation, Nooria turned and saw a familiar face. Lifting her hand in greeting, the other woman smiled in return and lifted her free hand; gently pulling the donkey's lead with the other hand toward the party of three. As she waited for reyha to join them, Nooria turned to her two male companions and quietly informed them, "Reyha has been a help to me since my arrival and we've become friends. She came to Pridon's Hearth with the first colonists."

Gracefully moving toward you is a beautiful, tallish female; slim and long-limbed. She has an olive complexion, large, expressive violet-hued eyes, framed by curling dark lashes; long, loose dark brown hair falling down her shoulders and back, and she has slightly long, round-tipped ears peaking out from the strands of hair. She is wearing a peasant blouse and matching long skirt in cornflower blue, accompanied by pretty earrings and bracelets made of gemstones and pearls. An orange, patterned scarf sits angled across her hips; the fine tassels swaying as she moved. On her feet are ankle-high, soft leather boots. You catch her lovely scent on the breeze as she approaches - she smells of island wildflowers and possesses an innate earthy scent mingled with the sea and air. She looks to be in her early to mid 20's. General image of Reyha.

Reyha was sweetly laughing as she joined them. "Jino decided to more stubborn than usual, today. But I'm very happy we crossed paths as I was looking for you. Good day, Nooria," the Half-Elf's violet eyes were shining prettily as her gaze moved from Nooria to Thorongil and then Letswalo. "Well met, sirs. I am Reyha Balan," she said in melodic voice; her warm smile greeting them.

Nooria embraced Reyha; even with the donkey, Jino, partly in the way.

"Good day, Reyha. How fare you?" Nooria asked her kindly.

Jino's head nudged/butted Nooria's leg as if reminding the woman that she had not greeted him. "I see you want some attention, Jino-boy. Leave Nooria be now. I'll give you a carrot once we return to the cottage."

Settling her violet gaze on the beautiful Aasimar, Reyha answered her question, "I am well, my friend. Glad to see the town survived last eve's wild storm. Although it looks like rain will fall again in an hour or two. Which reminds me," rifling through one of the sacks attached to the donkey, she pulled three packages out and handed one to each of the trio, "The Halflings of Stone Hall bid me give these to you, with their thanks. They are leather ponchos. It'll help when you're moving about the rain - least you will not be left wholly sodden."

(Poncho, worth 5 sp, weight 2 lbs, This circle of water-resistant fabric (leather) has a hooded opening in the center, making it easy to slip it on or off and protecting your entire body from rain. Please add it to your respective gear list.)

"Also, they have sent this tent for your use," gesturing to the tent tied across the donkey's saddle. "You have protected us since your arrival; it's a little something to protect you from the elements as you move outside of town. We do see a bit of rain for half the day on any given day. If our strong Northman friend here would like to take it from the saddle, I'd be most grateful."

(Large tent, worth 30gp, weight 40 lbs. A large tent holds four creatures and takes 45 minutes to assemble. Your own pack mule/donkey can carry this as you make your trek on foot.)

Current date: Fireday, 21st day of Arodus. The time in game is now noon. If you mean to walk to Jheri's plantation, it will take you eight hours, which means you'll arrive by 8 pm if you leave very soon and don't stop/tarry along the way. The rain/drizzle will begin falling around 2 pm and will last until the next morning. The road/paths will become muddy/muddier. As soon as you're done speaking with Reyha, you can set out from Pridon's Hearth. Good luck!

At the arrival of Nooria's friend, Letswalo smiles a little. He smiles a little more at the gifts.

"Well met and thank you, Reyha. And Jino. I am Letswalo, formerly of Kalabuto. And I want to see Pridon's Hearth prosper, with our little group prospering with it. Know ye the lizardfolk?"

Reyha's violet gaze settled on the dark-skinned Letswalo as he extended his gratitude and introduced himself. She smiled and gave a polite nod of her head; her jewellery tinkling prettily from the small movement.

"I am formerly of Korvosa. Welcome, Letswalo. As to the lizardfolk, I have heard of them and it seems we had trouble with some by the barriers last eve. Fortunately, I have not crossed paths with their raiding parties in my sojourns into the jungle. I would counsel you to be careful as you wander outside the walls of the colony for you are new to this region. Our jungles have their own dangers and it is not wise to travel through them at night. The Song'o give little trouble, I've found, but be warned they do not like strangers overly much for they keep to their own kind."

Thorongil's eyes widen in surprise at the Halfling's offering through Reyha, but he seems pleased.

"This is a valuable gift, I thank you for it," he says with a nod of his head to her.

He takes the poncho and examines it for a moment before storing it with is gear. Then, noticing the tent that Reyha has brought he studies it for a moment.

"This will certainly be helpful as we travel," he says to her as he complies with her earlier request and transports the tent from Reyha's donkey to the back of their mule.

"Though I do not mind being wet overmuch, heavy rains can compromise the integrity of our gear. This will be a boon if the rain continues to fall," he says as he considers what Reyha has said about the weather.

He glances to the west and studies the coast thoughtfully and then turns back to Reyha.

"You say that rain comes nearly every day here?" he asks "I am used to heavy rains during the Autumn; is this much rain common in these lands year round?" he continues, curious about the frequent rain and wishing to learn more of the land he is traveling in.

He then realizes that they are on a time schedule as Letswalo responds to his earlier question.

"We are to travel north to aid the family of the Sheriff. You seem well-versed in the terrain near to us; including knowledge about the lizard folk."

"Would you care for an escort to your home as we begin our journey?" he asks, curious to learn more about her.

Thorongil would like to talk to her further, but as they are on a time-schedule he doesn't want to delay in case it can compromise the safety of the Sheriff's family. However, if Reyha's home is on the way north he will use the time that they travel to her house (or wherever she is going if she is traveling the same direction as they are) he will be happy to talk to her further.

Such fine manners, she mused silently. She gave the man a bright smile and shook her head, making the jewellery at her ears and throat tinkle again. Thorongil's eyes narrow somewhat as he considers this.

"This does not seem like normal weather," he says with a frown, as if considering the implications.

"During the night we encountered lizard-folk who seemed to be doing some sort of dark magic near to the water... Heavy rains would make this land hard for most people to live here; but rains brought in great frequency could turn a jungle into a swamp..." he adds, then shakes his head.

The idea seemed unlikely, of course, that lizard folk could be using sorcery to mold the land itself into something more to their tastes; yet he had heard tales in the north of frost giants and wintry wights who desired to use magic to cover the world in ice and snow - if such things were real, why not here in the southlands?

"If the storms are inspired by supernatural means we must be vigilant in seeking signs to discover the source," he adds the last to his companions.

"Thank you for the information, lady," he says in response.

"My mind is overwrought with many concerns and I have forgotten my manners. I am Thorongil, I am from the northlands. I am pleased to meet you and I look forward to knowing you better upon our return," he says with a polite nod of his head.

He then waits to see what she will say about escorting her; for though he had intended to do so out of a courtesy, now he was curious to know if she knew more of the troubles which surrounded the colony, especially rumors of that troll...

I'm absolutely ready :) However, I was curious to know how fast we should try to travel. If marching speed matters, I say we "hustle" before it rains. If it won't matter, we can move normal marching speed.

He glances at the sky above and studies it as they walk.

"The lady Reyha said we may have rain in an hour or two - let us make as much speed as we can while the weather holds, then. Are we agreed?" he asks the others.

Given that rain could pose problems for overland travel (I have no idea if it will, but it could) Thorongil will advise his companions to try to move at a - Hustle -

Normal walking gives us about 3 miles an hour - hustle gives us six miles an hour. It's not that much better if we only do it for an hour, but if we're slowed because of storms it could be an advantage in the long run.

On the other hand, we can only Hustle once in a while because of this: A character can hustle for 1 hour without a problem. Hustling for a second hour in between sleep cycles deals 1 point of nonlethal damage, and each additional hour deals twice the damage taken during the previous hour of hustling. A character who takes any nonlethal damage from hustling becomes fatigued.

That said; what do you guys think?

Survival to aid Thorongil: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 (Successful. +2 to Thorongil's check for total of 29.)

With Thorongil in front, using his expertise of the land and nature, and with Nooria aiding him from her position in the group, pulling the laden mule by the lead rope, the party of three and the mule began to move in a light run/jog, pressing forward and readily circumventing any bogged areas, uneven ground, vines, roots and the low canopies of the closest grove and precarious muddy pools. The pack mule was not entirely happy with being forced to move quickly along the trackless, wet grassland or through the trees, but it began to amble and then trot under Nooria's capable/firm hand/guidance on the rope. Thorongil's timely instructions and shrewd guidance very readily saved the pack mule a broken leg, which would have proven rather unfortunate for the trio. They exited the light rainforest area and moved into open grassy plains.

Thorongil, Letswalo and Nooria kept a keen eye on the surrounding land in case there were other, approaching or hidden threats to worry about. Over the one hour they were lightly running, they spotted nothing out of ordinary or untoward.

Alright, so the party has successful hustled for an hour and covered 3 miles out of 12 (9 miles remaining). This has shaved an hour off the total time it would have taken you - you'll now arrive at the plantation (barring any possible incidents which would slow you down) in 7 hours instead of 8 hours.

Nooria slowed down and reined in the trotting mule; the creature now snorting and making an unhappy sound somewhere between a whinny and bray. Nooria gently scratched the creature's head to calm it, catching her own breath as she did.

"Shall we walk now? We cannot keep up such a pace, especially the mule," Nooria said, taking deep breaths.

Thorongil's Survival:

From the gathering and darkening clouds, you can gauge that the drizzle/light rain (0.01-0.02 inch per hour) will certainly begin falling within the next hour and will grow into a moderate rainfall thereafter (0.11 to 0.30 inch per hour). You have your leather ponchos to keep off the rain from your clothing/person and you may carry forward at normal walk. Or, you may rest a while - let me know what you plan on doing. Thanks!

Thorongil glances to the sky and rubs his chin thoughtfully.

"If we continue to push ourselves we shall surely suffer the effects; yet we may make better speed... yet how fast shall it truly be?" he muses, as if prepared to make some quick calculations on the matter as he glances at Nooria for confirmation on the situation.

Then, pausing in his mental computations he turns and glances at his allies.

"Nay; overtaxing ourselves is not a wise course. There is little reason to arrive at our location a few hours sooner if - having arrived - we are too weary to lift our swords," he says with a wry smile after hearing Letswalo's words.

That said, Thorongil will take out his poncho and cover himself with it, and encourage the others to do so.

Seeing no reason to halt outright, he instead continues to proceed with normal speed and assumes his companions will do so.

Pausing at the plan he turns to his allies.

"Do you wish to rest first, or shall we continue on now?" he asks the others.

Nooria removed the leather poncho from her pack and juggling/readjusting the mule's lead rope, she placed the covering over her head and across her shoulders, as Thorongil had just done and instructed.

"Let us continue while the rain is not here. When the rain comes and falls harder, then we can decide whether to stop and take shelter or continue."

The party continue at a steady/normal pace across the wet, muddy, open grassland..

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Because of the increased and consistent rainfall, the grasslands outside of the walls of Pridon's Hearth were quickly becoming marshland.

Upon Thorongil's question, Nooria pointed to a section of the marshlands. Letswalo was the first to screw up his nose and almost gagged. Nooria pulled up the scarf around her nose. The trio noted the air was tainted with the smell of rotten eggs, and, searching the surrounding grasses/marshes, Letswalo and Nooria quickly discovered a section of the marsh swelling and threatening to burst. Swiftly moving back a safe distance, they (and their mule) waited behind a thick, fallen tree trunk until the billowing ground split apart and rocks, mud and debris came flying forth with some force in all directions. The startled mule gave a loud bray which turned into a long "Haawww" sound and tugged at the rope hopping to make a bolt. Nooria held onto its lead rope tightly and it resignedly calmed. None of the party, nor the mule, were injured, although the air was rank with the smell of the newly released gases from the surface below.

"Good thing we spotted that when we did. We would have been well bludgeoned otherwise. Let us continue watching where we tread."

Thorongil is somewhat concerned about the explosion of gasses. They had been safe of the range of the rocks and mud tearing through the air; but if they hadn't, they may have been seriously injured or even killed.

Letswalo wrote:

Thorongil grunts in assent with Letswalo's comment.

"Aye... I have heard tell of swamps of fire in my youth, but they were only children's tales... Yet rotten eggs smells not unlike the black powder smell used on the ships that plied The Shackles... were it not raining, such an explosion may have been joined by fire as well, perhaps," he responds to Letswalo.

"We must sure to be cautious if such things happen again, though luckily so much heavy rainfall shall surely stem any true fire, it is hoped..." he muses.

As the rains seem to dwindle and the mists thin out, he pauses and stares hard at the terrain before them.

"The land seems flat here and there are no mists. Yet if we can see well enough, surely any threat could see us with ease, too."

"Let us take a moment to study the area to make sure there are no other little surprises around."

EDIT: I think that, with Letswalo's check, our combined total is 27; though Nooria may be able to offer us some extra bonuses, too.

GM - kind of a silly question, but if it is a natural threat like monsters or more sulfur-like smell, is it possible that our pack animal may smell a threat, too? I mean, I'm not too worried about it as it seems we have a good Perception Check, but just more curious if we should also pay attention to how our animals react to things. I've heard that animals will often "sense" an impending earthquake before humans are aware of it; so I figured I'd ask if we should also be studying our sturdy beast just to be sure, in case the pack animal starts to get nervous about things we may not notice.

Not a silly question, Thorongil. During the exploration of the lands outside of Pridon's Hearth proper, active perception and survival (among other skills) are important and have direct consequences depending on how well or not so well you all roll. Therefore, I haven't been utilising the npc pack animal in game to signal any possible threats/dangers. Instead, I've been merely asking the players to roll certain skill checks and I narrate the outcome/s of said roll/s. If you gentlemen would prefer I roleplayed npc animals' reactions as you roam/explore the land and then have you notice and ask why in game and then make rolls to figure it all out, then please let me know. Perhaps I can employ this particular information sharing device at certain points in future. Thanks!

Nooria's Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

The highest roll was Throngil's so Letswalo and Nooria will aid him. Thorongil's Perception, with aid, totals 29.

When the party was about thirty feet from the nearest field of hummocks, Thorongil, with the aid of his companions, spotted a particularly green section of grassland, lower than the nearby hummocks, ten feet in front of him. There was collected water and mud on top and around the grassy reeds possibly due to last eve's heavy rainfall. Thorongil signalled his companions and advised they move carefully forward. Collecting a long, sturdy branch from the grass close to him, Thorongil moved to the edge of the area he noticed, although not too close, and leaned over to examine it better. There was indeed standing water, but the mud made it too dark to gauge its depth. The Northman stuck the branch into the water and pushed down. When the branch touched the bottom, he could make out that it was around one foot in depth and was indeed a shallow bog.

Thorongil's Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

With the practiced ease of a traveller or scout, Thorongil reckoned how wide the section of bog was and determined the best route to safely travel around it; and not take up too much travelling time.

Alright, so you have travelled 8 miles out of 12. You have 4 miles to go to the plantation (taking 2 hours at a normal, steady pace). Do you still wish to stop and rest at this point? And, if so, how long for? It's currently drizzling steadily and consistently, although you are not being drenched by the rain. The surrounding area is more open field - with pockets of marshes and hummocks. There are no significant trees to shelter under in this section of the hex, although you do have means to shelter via your tent. If you prefer to keep walking, then let me know and I'll move you forward. The time in game is currently 5.20pm.

Thorongil frowns at the bog in front of him as he plumbs the depths with the stick.

"The water is not deep - roughly a foot or so; but we must be cautious as we proceed," he says to the others "for it may suddenly become deeper."

"We are only a few hours to our destination; if we rest now we shall likely be there after nightfall. I would rather push forward so we can get there while there is daylight to aid us," he says to the others.

"Are we agreed in moving on?" he asks the others.

As he waits for an answer a sudden thought occurs to him and he pulls out his journal with a stick of lead he makes a notation in it about the location of the bog, and, thinking further, the location of the dangerous swamp gasses they had passed earlier.

"This would be worth knowing if they are to ever solidify their holdings on these lands, I would think," he explains.

Then, carefully folding the damp pages up he places the journal up in his pack as he waits to hear if the others are willing to advance.

Correction to the miles travelled so far - Your party has travelled 9 miles out of the 12, not 8 as previously mentioned. So you only have 3 miles to left until you get to the plantation. I shouldn't post very late at night, it seems. ;) Apologies for any confusion.

Nooria watched as Thorongil noted the findings on this parcel of wildland in his journal before answering his question.

In the distance, to the northeast, through the gentle streams of rain, you can make out the deep green of a grove of trees. You continue in a straight path for now, mindful of where you tread.

You travel a further 1.5 miles, for a total of 10.5 miles travelled. Time in game is 6.20pm. Know. Arcana DC 12:

It is a small, aquatic magical beast (3 ft long, not counting its wings or barbed tail) called a Water Leaper.

Water leapers are ornery hunters that thrive in lakes, swamps, and other marshy bodies of water. They eagerly ambush much larger targets. Against challenging prey, they make their namesake leap from the water, use their jagged sting to open a wound, and then wait for their victim to bleed out.

Smelling the creature and watching something jump from the water, the pack mule gives a loud "Heehaaa" and pulls at the lead rope in Nooria's hand as it attempts to run away.

and this time the barbed tail opens a wound on his shoulder, embedding dangerous microscopic shards into the open wound, causing him to bleed. The Mwangi man takes a further 4 pts of damage plus 1 bleed and jagged sting damage.

Letswalo's current hp are: 6/13 HP plus 1 bleed damage.

(A creature that is taking bleed damage takes the listed amount of damage at the beginning of its turn. Bleeding can be stopped by a DC 15 Heal check or through the application of any spell that cures hit point damage (even if the bleed is ability damage).)

Heal check (DC 15):

A successful examination of the wound will reveal the tiny shards and they can be pulled out carefully by a healer, which will stop the bleeding and remove all the fragments.

However, magical and supernatural healing of any kind cannot stop the bleeding and, instead, seals the fragments within the wound, increasing the bleed damage and the ability to naturally/non-magically heal the wounded to stop the bleeding.)
