Hmmm... could I trade out Elemental Affinity for Like the Wind?

Hmmm... a Sylph Investigator could be interesting... though someone else was already talking about an Investigator. Still, air-aligned Sherlock Holmes adventurer sounds like it could be fun. I'll play around with some ideas and see if a different one strikes me more strongly.

Edit: Hmmm... maybe a mad-scientist-style alchemist? That I could do... hmm..

Thanks for your interest! There's certainly a strong proclivity towards alchemy and sylphs in this world.

Yep, that looks fine to me.

Oh, a question about the campaign itself--is it likely to stick around near Hearth, or will there be a lot of traveling?

For the 10-min background, how in-depth should we get about the NPC's in step 4?

I do tailor the campaign somewhat to the strengths of the characters, and the absence of rangers and hunters means this will be a city-centered campaign, at least to start with (though all good campaigns have at least some traveling)

Just the names of the NPCs and a sentence about your relationship is fine. No need to go to in-depth.

I had a bit of time, so I threw together a 10-minute background (it may actually have taken me only ten minutes):

Background:
Step 1:
* He's a brilliant inventor and alchemist, but far too reckless and free-spirited to work in any kind of organization.
* He tends to hop back and forth over that thin line separating brilliance and madness--he's intelligent enough to keep from killing himself with his experiments, but not wise enough to realize that maybe he shouldn't blow up another lab trying it.
* He could probably make a good living for himself with his inventions and alchemical discoveries, but he has absolutely no interest in money, only in advancing science.
* He thinks all people have a place, 'as an ingredient in the grand formula of life!' His is SCIENCE!
* He actually wants to contribute to the war against the Dark, but just hasn't invented something he thinks is good enough yet.
Step 2:
* He wants to prove, beyond any doubt, the value of SCIENCE to the war effort. He's convinced there's some hidden weakness to the Dark that the scientific method (or just a lot of alchemical bombs) can discover that will be a decisive advantage in the war.
* I'd like to see some friction between him and religious elements. He's... basically, he doesn't care about religion. Yes, the gods are great and all, but they're over there doing their part. His part has nothing to do with them, so he tries to ignore them. I get the impression that attitude will cause problems, and I think it would be interesting to play with that.
Step 3:
* He was kicked out of Light after blowing up one too many labs. Somehow he never got hurt in these explosions, which he insists is due to this safety techniques, but there are those who suspect him of some sort of sabotage.
* One of his past experiments had some consequences he is unaware of. A result that may one day come looking for him...
Step 4:
* An ifrit thief, and frequent patron of his ramshackle shop in Hearth. She speaks highly of his alchemical goods and inventions to any who inquire about them, though unbeknownst to him she uses them mostly during heists.
* A fellow sylph alchemist, one of his schoolmates who thought his disastrous experiments were hilarious. Never takes anything seriously, except for things that might lose him his job in Light's alchemy labs.
* Hostile--Sylph Schoolmaster in Light whose teaching labs were the ones he blew up. She's sure he must be ruined now, but if she finds out he's well-off enough to keep experimenting she'll do all she can to ruin his reputation, because she's convinced he's a menace to civilization. Thinks he gives sylphs an even worse name.
Step 5:
* He speaks in a fast, breathless, almost stream-of-consciousness manner when he gets excited about something: "The Scientific Method yes! First formulate a hypothesis I think the explosion was a result of too much sulfur in the mixture or perhaps not enough charcoal to stabilize it or how would I test those well I could make another batch..." etc.
* He tends to not notice that he's wearing a shirt with scorch marks and that his hair hasn't been combed in weeks until someone points it out to him.
* He thinks aloud--a lot. He's absolutely terrible at keeping secrets thanks to this.

I still need to think up names for the NPC's, and obviously I'll flesh out some of the points further in the full submission, but this probably gets the gist of what I'm thinking of.

Also, I'm thinking of naming him Byron, because 1) I've always thought it sounded like it should be the name of a fantasy character and 2) It's British, and you pointed out Industrial Britain as the similar culture for Sylphs. There is, however, nothing remotely Byronic about him.

ill put in a dot. Still looking at what to choose.

Thanks for your interest! Let me know if you have any questions.

Wouldn't elementalists from the Occult guide make sense, since they're not full casters and represent one of the purer manipulations of the elements, but just limit their powers or forms of powers to one element, ala benders from The Last Avatar setting? If not, an ifrit magus sounds awesome.

A few more questions so I can get started on her personality an d back story.

How do you feel about romance popping up between players or with NPCs?

Is there a preference on sexuality? Not all GMs want to deal with subjects such as Homosexuality or even Heterosexuality. Preferring that simply stay out of the game. Is it a bigotry that happens in game?

Just how odd is it considered to have a preference for a different kind of elemental being than what you are?

Are there any specific types of weapons or fighting styles common to the Oreads?

Honestly, it's just for my convenience. I doubt there's anything wrong with them, but the three reasons I banned classes were 1) Full casters wreck settings 2) Flavor doesn't fit (like gunslingers) and 3) Classes I'm not familiar with (Occult Classes)

I have no problem with romance between players or with NPCs. Of course, for PCs you would have to figure out how the other player in question feels about it. (either through RP or just OOC). With NPCs, if it feels natural, I'm cool with it. I'm also glad you used the word 'romance' - while this isn't a PG game, I'm not going to be writing any explicit stuff, and I would expect the "door of good taste" to close on the scene when appropriate.

I have no preference when it comes to sexuality. Again, my main concern is good taste, and how the romance is presented, rather than the exact nature of it.

I'd say preferences for a different race are about equivalent to modern-day. Most people are fine with it, but you'll always have the occasional weirdos who hate things that are 'different'.

Fighting styles: There are three main monastic orders in the West Tribe: The way of the Root, the Way of the Leaf, and the Way of the Branch. Their fighting styles, are, respectively, Student of Stone, Master of Many Styles, Zen Archer (monk archetypes)

And seriously, thanks for asking. Always better to make sure everyone's comfort levels and expectations are in alignment. I welcome all questions about the mechanics and fluff of the world, as well as what kind of a story we're going to be making.

Looks good so far! Looking forward to a backstory (especially why an undine watersinger is in Hearth)

Fiordelise updated, still hashing out the background in my mind a bit. Still no gear.

I like the details you've added to Fiordelise. As a slight expansion on the background, how does she plan to reverse the family fortune in Hearth? Why did she choose to be trained as a Skald (or was it a natural proclivity?)

Alright, WIP character sheet here. Having a devil of a time finding a decent character image. Personality wise, this character is very much a 'gentle giant' though I don't have much more than that at the moment.

Side note: I swapped Earth Affinity for Granite Skin; I hope that's alright.

Granite Skin is definitely ok. One minor thing: I see ranks in 4 skills (perception, linguistics, profession, sense motive) but a paladin with no int bonus should have 2, and your free rank in profession. Like my discussion with RePete, I'm always open to corrections :)

Either way, looking forward to the background.

Favored Class Bonus. It'll be going into health from here on out, but I wanted Sedime.

Gotcha, thanks.

Should I get to play then I will bring it up again. Thank you for answering and being cool with it. As to the not wanting to be descriptive I understand. Fading to black is a good thing in those situations if everyone is not behind it. I will get to work on my Oread tonight.

Dark Archive

Hmm, did a 10-minute background, it means 10-minutes per question, right? ;-)

Also realized I managed to completely skip selecting skills.

The "free" skill point for "background skills" I've put into craft, but that was more of a childhood hobby, and probably won't advance further than the 1 rank in it. Will probably either use it to pick up further performs or switch to a profession later, if that's okay?

Fiordelise

Kallik Sisa means lightening flower and I think I like that name. Fiordelise seems very interesting, just so you know oh masked one.

And all of the Oread avatars are male! I just want a rock hard lady!

Dark Archive

Some of the Fey are passable Oread avatars, or Outsiders.

Actually a lot of the Gnome avatars seem to match how Oread's are described on the initial post.

Dark Archive

Think I've just spent too long looking at Avatars as the Avatar picker page seems to have stopped working altogether now. I get annoyed with the Avatars when I have a firm picture in my head (I get annoyed enough when i have all of google!).

hopefully i can get something up tonight after work. Slyph is kinda what i am leaning towards

I think that this is a good pool of applicants, so I'm not accepting anyone new after this post.

To be clear, anyone who has posted interest at this point is still free to make a character and a submission. Final characters are due on Monday August 8 at 1159 PM Eastern, and I'll make my final decisions after that.

I will be submitting character but will not have time to work on it before tomorrow (saturday) evening due to work.
Just wanted to give a heads up that there is still one coming from me.

thanks

Preliminary character up.
still working on story but have a few good ideas.
check profile for character info.

This is Herkymr the silly

Here is preliminary character..

I will be formating it better shortly but cant until sat probably.

Working on back stor have a few good ideas bouncing in the space I call my head.

I did use some minor things out of other pathfinder books but I also am flexible for changing it.
At bottom of my character I have listed the books and what I used from each. I can get further information if you want

Could you please give me a little more information on the East tribe? I am thinking I am going to go with having her live there but she fled in her youth. Never really at peace with the ways of her tribe and she is was to capricious, temperamental, and impatient. When combined with the odd way she looks so is just too foreign for the zealots. Defiantly a black sheep.

The Fey aspect of her blood makes her capricious like the Fey. Quickly moving from happy to sad and just as quickly to anger. Her focus on most things is iffy at best. And this includes the rules of the tribe. She regularly forgets the various rituals that fill the day.

The Sylph part of her blood makes her impatient. The Tribe is to slow. We should go and go now. She does not want to wait to know something she needs to know it now. This lack of steady patience so natural to her people keeps her in a frequent state of agitation, at both herself and the tribe as a whole.

Any issues with the Mindchemist archetype?

sounds bi=polar with a tinge of anxiety disorder. :)

It wouldn't be to hard to tie in our toons if we are both picked.

I'm thinking along the lines of the below for background on m toon.

## I was / am a jeweler who deals mainly with fancy glasses.-- last name of this toon means glass maker. I have taken on the moniker of Ibinugilus (fury glass) and combined it with part of my surname (gilus = glass) as a way to "one up" those who cursed me

## My raging is a curse..I dont like usually

## I was kicked out because when I get really frustrated the curse takes over.

## I was cursed for my ack of respect to a "holy" or special place of "something" - havent figured out what yet though

## I am to pride full to return to the place of offense and beg /ask / barter for the removal of my curse. And so I try to come to grips with it and learn how to control and make it usefull

Very interested to see the background of a sylph barbarian.

You've got the gist of the East Tribe. They are deliberate and slow, making sure everything and everyone is in its place. The rituals throughout the day are seen as important not only for their reverence to Forest, but also as the glue that holds their society together.

Being nomads in the middle of untamed lands, much of any tribe's day is simply surviving (water, food, killing or avoiding predators, etc)

Anything that deviates from the norm (different races, different gods, different points of view) are seen not only as a distraction from the everyday necessities of life, but as a potential threat to what holds them together (Forest's benevolence and their shared heritage)

Let me know if that's the sort of info you were looking for, or if there's something else you'd like expanded.

Miner Cotren: Glad I guessed that right. Wonderful! I would like some examples of the daily rituals. I will use them in play sporadically. Even after leaving her tribe they will be part of her. She just gets distracted easily and tends to forget to do them. Along with a little on the tribe structure. Who is in charge? How is education handled? At what age do children begin hunting and truly become a member of the tribe. What would it take to be exiled?

Ibinugilas akoi I am always happy to try and work PCs stories together. It can work to jump start teamwork at times. We could have easily met in Hearth before the story begins.

And yes she is a little bi-polar and has quiet a bit of anxiety. I want to use features from the two creatures I have picked for my bloodlines.

Also dotting in but I am stuck at work :P

I will research and submit an idea this weekend, if that's not too late.

And yes she is a little bi-polar and has quiet a bit of anxiety. I want to use features from the two creatures I have picked for my bloodlines.

Here are some examples:

--During hunts, many hunters keep a constant litany of prayers in their mind: "Father pull my bow, Witch fly my arrow..."

--When dressing a kill (which is pretty weird for rock animals), certain parts of the animal might be buried or left as sacrifices to Forest.

--Greetings and goodbyes often involve minor blessings to one another rather than simple "Good morning". Ex: "Forest's bounty, friend" instead of "goodbye"

--Other important parts of survival, such as the first drink of water for the day, are always given thanks, usually with a small sacrifice (a small tip of water into the soil)

--Even when hunting, if certain rare curative flowers are stumbled upon, immediate thanks are to be given, and the flower is to be taken back to the tribe's healer

--Other small gestures, such as touching the wrist twice and the heart twice when misfortune is avoided

--Briefly praying under a tree at certain times of the day

Hope this gives you a better picture of the East Tribe. Many oreads do these things to some extent, but the East Tribe is far and away the most rigidly orthodox of all the tribes.

East Tribe:

--Ruled by 3 elders, representing the Gray Father, the Dead Witch, and the Bull. Each has certain duties (such as tribal defense, care of the dead, and hunting, respectively).

--Education varies by what the child's intended role is going to be. A few years before wo/manhood, the child will be expected to start shadowing their intended role (come along on hunts, but don't get in the way until you know what you're doing).

--Adulthood is celebrated with various trials and rites, leading to culmination on the 16th birthday.

--General education (such as lessons on Great Forest) would be handled on Rootsday.

--To get exiled would take some doing. Simply forgetting or ignoring the rituals would receive punishments (extra chores, maybe even some corporal punishment depending on the nature of the transgression), but to be exiled would require one of two things:

----A deliberate, irrevocable action or declaration either against the East Tribe or for something else (this could include cursing Great Forest, saying you're moving to Hearth, killing a tribe member in cold blood, etc)

----Someone higher up in the tribe having a vendetta against you (maybe one of the elders despised you for your mixed blood, and looked for an excuse to banish you)

Thank you! That will help. I was already considering the vendetta. She is a little mouthy and oblivious so offending people can be rather easy.

Is there a limit on how young I can be?

And I am having issues figuring out the secret she knows. That is always my biggest issue with the 10 minuet background. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

10 minuets is always a lie! It is done but for the secret she knows. I will flesh some of it out and add scenes to different parts to better show her personality when I have more time. If there is anything I should alter I can do so.

10 minuet background:
• background and concept elements

1)Kallik Sisa has the pale marble smooth skin of her people. Her hair is a vibrant green that she twists into long dreadlocks. Oddly no flowers grow her hair like a normal Oread female. But that is not the only odd feature about her. She has large wide verdant green eyes and pale green spirals decorating her body. Her lips darken to match her eyes as she aged.
2) Hating that she looked so plain next to the other women of the tribe, with their bright blossoms, Kallik took to twisting flowers into her hair. But they always died. This was a source of ridicule in her youth. Children are creatures full of malice at times. Due to this Kallik has developed a dislike for the smell of flowers, that sweet scent reminds her of her inadequacy.
3) Kallik has a rapid fire temper and this tends to chase people off. She is a very guarded person and is slow to let people in, always assuming the worst. Once that trust is earned she is fiercely loyal to those that she considers hers.
4) Being raised among the East Tribe Kallik is a religious person, at least as much as she is able to. She is conflicted where her belief is concerned. Her youth was miserable because of the hyper religious behavior of her tribe. There is comfort and anger found in her beliefs leaving her conflicted and confused in her religious beliefs.
5)Kallik is constantly in motion, full of energy. Fidgeting when she stands. Tossing and turning while she sleeps. She is like a rock, yes, but a rock in motion. Rolling down a hill or thrown into the air. She is able to be silent but never completely still even if it is just a gentle sway in her stance or twitching her fingers.
4) Carving calms her and when she has free time that is what she does. Completely calm and the only movements she makes are turning the wood or cutting with the knife. Compared to her normal observed behavior this seems odd. While carving all the tension falls out of her body. Much the way meditation works for others. She seems at peace with the world. There is movement but it is all deliberate. Each slice is planned. Dramatically different when compared to the constant unconscious movement that consumes her at all other times.

• Goals

1) Kallik wants a place to belong to. To be free to have friend and family who do not have ridiculous expectations of her that she can never hope to meet.
2) I would really like to go though her struggling to understand her lineage and her magical temper. I want to see her tested.

• Secrets

1)
2) She knows nothing of her actual lineage. There is Sylph and Fey in her blood. I would like the Fey to have originated as a curse from a Fey but I have yet to figure out how. The Sylph lineage comes from a romantic entanglement. The child of that union joined the East tribe to escape the oddness of his family. That person was her great grandfather. Who never spoke of it to his family.

• People

1) Umik, her mother's father, is an older male in the tribe. He has always had a kind word for her and is the first voice to speak up and defend her. Even with the vast difference in age he is one of her dearest friends. His father was born of a Oread and a Sylph. Umik never knew of his odd lineage so this information was never passed down. Umik loved his granddaughter and showed her the compassion and patience she needs. Something the tribe and her direct family was never able to do.
2) The isolation of the East tribe and Kallik's oddness kept her from forming many friendships. The main source of companionship was found in her grandfather but Amaruq was a boy from her age group who while she did not know very well mattered to her, even if she was not aware of it at the time. Amaruq and Kallik were competitive with each other. It was a rivalry that seemed to always be there. Amaruq spent a lot of time with her grandfather, Umik, learning to make weapons. They competed for Umik attention and affection. To finish tasked faster and with more skill than the other. That rivalry was the only thing that seemed to work to get Kallik to complete a task without getting distracted or bored, at least sometimes.
3) Chula was the woman who was to teach Kallik to hunt so she could provide for the Tribe. A strict and harsh woman, Chula, was a tyrant where Kallik was concerned. Feeling that she was being punished when she was given the young girl. A test of Faith is what Chula was told when she questioned the Elders. Determined to force Kallik to come to heel the two argued constantly. It was her teacher that caused Kallik to leave the Tribe.

• memories, mannerisms, or quirks
1) In an attempt to teach her a method to focus her mind and temper her wild ways her grandfather, Umik, taught her to whittle when she was old enough to hold a knife. Kallik took to the skill gradually. She loved the shapes Umik was able to make but for weeks all she managed was to bloody her fingers. Determined not to let the older man down she continued to practice. Gradually her skill grew though nowhere near to teachers. As a gift he gave a tiny fived petalled flower carved from a red wood. Over time she has begun to decorate her plan mane with little wooden bobbles, pretty stones, and bits of leather.
2) Kallik has remarkably low self-esteem and views most social interaction with a heavy dose of fear and doubt. She was never good enough for her tribe. She could never be what they expected her to be. This will not stop her from trying to be good enough. But each failing weighs heavily on her.
3) Kallik left her Tribe after her grandfather was buried. He was the only person who did not judge her for her odd ways. The harshness of the rules seemed to bury her after his passing. She had no outlet. If she was not suffering some punishment for failing to behave correctly she was working to learn the ways of the hunt. The older woman who was her teacher despised Kallik. Willing to do anything to try to fit in until Chula went too far. Ripping the wooden flower out of her hair and telling her that she cannot pretend to be something that she is not. The younger girl charged at her teacher with violent intentions. Scratching, hitting, biting, and kicking until she got the wooden flower back. She told Chula that she was right. Kallik went back to collect her things and left the tribe. She had always had a temper to watched but this was the first time she lost control. Hoping to find something better than the bigotry of her people. She avoided the other tribes thinking that they would either be like the East Tribe or weak people. Wanting something whole different then she is used to the lone Oread goes to the city of Hearth. All species of Elen can be found there. Perhaps she can find people who do not fit like her.

From Paxx: A little background for Brinn

Fluff for Brinn:

Appearance and demeanor: Although thin and of middling height, Brinn's bright violet hair and dancing violet eyes hint at the personality within.

Background: Ever since I was a fingerling, Grandfather would say "why must you always swim against the current small fry, the Great River has a plan and takes us where it will..."

But he is one to talk. He is an unmoving eddy in the stream, never leaving his home while the folk swirl around him for his great "wisdom" and counsel. Myself, I was never one to accept the River's destiny. Once I discover one thing, I happily move to the next, and the more demanding, the better! One such thing was the art of watersinging from old Master Mirkoo, but he did not truly appreciate my expression of all its forms...apparently, encasing another's feet in ice while they sleep is considered some kind of disrespect. So he sent me on my own way, which I was quite ready to do. Now I am ready for something new, so I head the Hearth, the "City that Never Sleeps". Nothing could be more upstream than an adventure in a city full of uptight ifrit, wish-they-were ifrit sylphs, and slow-witted oread!
