Carnadine |
Round 3
Carnadine gets cut down and familiarly bleeds on the stone floor.

Yzera Hykeph |
You're going to die anyway, why waste your time fighting. If you had surrendered, we might have let you live to see your family.
Oh well, too late now.
With that, Yzera once more swings her blades, seeking to bring one up, as though to disembowel the guard, while the second goes for the juggler.

Kelvar Mylan |
I'll run down to help Carnadine as soon as someone tells me he's injured.
Kelvar continued watching for any fleeing guards, although it looked as though they had hunkered down.
DM HolyWater |
With Yzera's blow the second guard falls to the ground. "I would never surrender... to the likes... of you..." he gargles out as blood dribbles from his mouth. The corner of the room still burns but all three trapdoors are usable, though only the middle one leads to the main room. Opening it reveals Blackerly, two more guards and two guard dogs surrounding the ladder. "You've no where to run and there's no way you're getting past this door. Reinforcement should be here any second now." He grins up at you.
Kelvar Mylan |
The sounds of battle gone quiet, Kelvar walked over to the trapdoor and looked down, calling, "Is it all clear down there?"
Yzera Hykeph |
If we have oil, then we should send Grumblejack back to get 1 or 2 barrels. Kelvar has them trapped inside with his bow, Grumblejack and/or Kaath can grab some oil, while the rest of us negotiate with the guards.
Standing to the side so that she is out of arrow shot, Yzera calls back.
You have one chance to surrender. Climb up without any weapons, and we will simply bind you and leave you unconscious. All your friends and the Warden are now dead. If you wish to die attempting to be a hero, that is your choice, although I would consider it to be a very poor choice.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Rosemary Thorn |
Rose shouts back up to Kelvar. "Blackerly and his goons are on the level below us! The immediate area is clear!"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
"Surrender Blackerly! And we may let you flee from this place." she yells in as sensual and innocent a tone one can manage when yelling.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
"Or I swear, I will find you family and write the story of your foolish pride in their blood!"
Kaath the Bastard |
Dont necessarily want to be caught all alone retrieving another oil keg, so Kaath would vote to have Grumblejack grab one.
Kaath drops his rage, slices at the dead guard's midsection. Once all social options are exhausted, he carefully (to not draw fire from below) tosses the body down below, letting the entrails drop out on the guards and dogs.
Kelvar Mylan |
Kelvar climbed down the ladder, and held up a hand to forestall Kaath from leaving to get another barrel of oil. He then gestured for the others to close the trapdoor.
Azrin |
Azrin's ritual completes and a tear through space opens, allowing a large serpent to slither out into reality. It flicks its tongue at the dark elf and coils around to survey its surroundings.

Kelvar Mylan |
"There are 3 other trapdoors down in this room. Now, the center one is the only one that leads to the gate, but some of us can go down either of the other ones. Once we're down one of them," with a flourish, Kelvar pulls out the veil, "we can just open a window."
With a grin, he said, "We have Kord and Caprin remain up here. Once we make our window, they throw open the trap door and Kord leaps down upon them while we assault their flank. We'll catch them off guard and we don't have to take the time to run back to the keep and get another barrel of oil."
Yzera Hykeph |
I may be mistaken, but have the guards and dogs decided to hole up in the main entrance where we can drop the portcullis on either side of them and then just pepper them with arrows? There definitely appear to be arrow slits from either side. Also, are there murder holes or anything of that nature? It would seem logical considering the defensive nature of the prison.
Kelvar Mylan |
That would be logical. I was operating under the assumption there weren't any because the guards shouldn't be stupid enough to stand right where we can trap them and pincushion them, but if there are, I think I like that plan better.
Kaath the Bastard |
Kaath leans in close to Kelvar and keeps his voice to a whisper.
"Take a look at the others. Though our lord guides us, I wouldn't say we're in great shape as a whole....Perhaps there are better ways?"
Yzera Hykeph |
They have barricaded themselves in the room. We have three options. First, we could barricade them in more by blocking the trap door and any doors to the courtyard, then we just leave, but with guards behind us to give chase. Second, as I previously said, we could have a barbecue by dumping a barrel of oil on them. Or, third, we could simply attack them. I personally have taken a pretty good beating and would prefer not being at the front of any assault.
Getting the oil should not take long since we now control the roof and the front entrance to the prison keep.
Kelvar Mylan |
As the others discussed their options, Kelvar walked over to Carnadine, laid his hands on him, and channeled the divine energy of his Divine Favor spell into a spell that, which would cause pain to most, would actually heal the wounds Carnadine had taken.
Inflict Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Carnadine |
Carnadine blinks and rolls over on to an elbow. "Thanks, mate. Are we free yet?" He then stands up and shuffles over to join the walking wounded wondering if he should heal himself or save his last magical resources for the guards.
Kelvar Mylan |
"Not yet. We have Blackerly and a couple guardsmen beneath us, guarding the gate out. Our plans so far are either send people back to the garrison to get another barrel of oil and burn them, trap them in place to scale down the wall, or to flank them by going through one of the other trap doors and using the window to make a new entrance in. We could then have people jump on them from above and from the side. I suggested Kord take them from above. Kaath can lead the charge into the room from the side, and we can follow suit. My concern with the oil is the time it will take. I don't know how long we have until we get reinforcements."
Yzera Hykeph |
Yzera looks Grumblejack.
Want to have some fun with fire? We are going to need some oil to barbecue the guards beneath. Can you run back to the store room and get 2-3 kegs? Use the ladder in the closest tower.
She then looks to the rest.
You all keep the guards entertained, I will go back with Grumblejack, unless someone else wants to accompany him.
It should be 2-3 rounds to get onto the roof. Another 2-3 to climb down the rope to the walls. Another 2-3 to get down the tower. Probably 10 to get to the storeroom and grab the oil. Then the same to return. We are talking perhaps 5 minutes total unless we get pinned down, which is the job of the rest of you, to keep the guards and Blackerly bottled up.
DM HolyWater |
The triangles in the walls are arrow slots facing into the main wall yes, I sorta forgot about them.
You could go back the way you came or go down the west trapdoor and out that door. Probably slightly quicker. There is 1 more keg of oil left to get.
Grumblejack nods to Yzera and grins. He lumbers back with her to get the oil keg.
Blackerly replies to Rosemary's threat, "A we to trust a condemned criminal? Haha. How about you surrender and I will ensure you receive a quick and painless death instead of burning to death."
Kelvar Mylan |
So, there are arrow slits we can use to shoot down on them on this level, or do we have to go down a level to use them?
Carnadine |
Carnadine decides on healing himself.
inflict light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
last inflict light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Then, he says, "Cook them all. We can use the arrow slits, to fire on them if they leave the oven. Then, we can use the magic window and knotted rope to escape afterwards."
Yzera Hykeph |
Yzera heads down the other trap door, with Grumblejack squeezing through the narrow opening behind her. She then heads over to the prison door, running so that any light he guards have cannot be used to spot her and Grumblejack.
They will retrieve the oil and Grumblejack will give it to Kaath up through the trap door so that the flame touched one can enjoy cooking people.
Azrin |
"Burning to death is it?" Azrin responds to Blackerly with sadistic satisfaction. "By your own words then." He smiles and waits.
DM HolyWater |
No. The arrow slits are only on the walls. Not the floor.
Several minutes later Grumblejack and Yzera make it back unnoticed with the remaining keg of lantern oil. Azrin's serpentine friend has materialised and the guards and Blackerly seem happy to exchange threats and insults while they wait for overwhelming reinforcements.
Yzera Hykeph |
Yzera looks Kaath:
You enjoy burning things. Why don't we have Grumblejack smash the keg down on them, several of us can go below and use arrows against any who the oil misses. Grumblejack and Kaath, who seem to be the least injured, can then head to the courtyard in case any try to flee from their entrapment.
Is there a control for the main gate or portcullis that we have seen yet? We can check the last trapdoor, which appears to lead to a room with no other exits, to see if they are in there as well.
Kaath the Bastard |
Kaath cracks his fingers and gives Grumblejack a smirk
You ready, pal? You heard the lady. Smash, burn. Crush, Kill, Destroy.
waiting for the signal. Readying Spark once the keg is smashed on the guards
Kelvar Mylan |
Kelvar climbs down the west trapdoor and gets his bow ready, studying Blackerly through the arrow slit to make sure he can kill him quickly.
Studied Target on Blackerly.
Yzera Hykeph |
Yzera looks to Caradine:
Perhaps we should head to the roof. If they try to escape out one of the doors, we can light them up with arrows.
Head up to the roof, but leave the trapdoor open so that we can get down quickly if someone calls for help.
DM HolyWater |
Now that you have prepared your plan of attack, those of you below wait for the oil to burn. Those above set the oil alight and break open the barrel unloading several gallons of oil to fall through the trapdoor onto the guards and dogs below. Fur burns, skin burns and cries of pain are yelled along with several curses.
If you are shooting an arrow roll for that now
Carnadine |
Carnadine had prepared the knotted rope, anchored on the roof and ready to uncoil to escape the prison. His shield was stowed on his back as he waits for the burning guards to leave their oven.

DM HolyWater |
Two of the arrows hit their targets as the dogs howl and run around in circles. "I'm too young to die!" one of the guards yells in pain and runs to open the door. As soon as it is open the dogs run out of the room into the courtyard. The guard runs to the fountain and jumps in headfirst. The dogs don't seem to be that intelligent and run around trying to escape the burning. "Come back here you cowards!" Blackerly yells as the second guard sees the water and runs to join his companion. Yzera's arrow goes wide but they don't seem to notice.
Blackerly snaps off the arrow that Kelvar had shot into him and now stands in front of the double doors, out of the way of the burning oil on the floor. "I will never let you escape Branderscar!"
Azrin |
Azrin speaks soothingly to Blackerly. "Come, be reasonable. I think we all wish for the same thing."

Yzera continues firing at the guards by the fountain.
