Btw, sorry if this seems overly-complicated with the checks I'm asking for. We're all experimenting here, and this stealth-based encounter with a lot of open area is a little difficult to keep track of. I'm open to adapting how I run this type of encounter, so let me know if there's something that doesn't make sense or that you would do differently (especially those of you with DM experience).

The party, the setting, and the story are great. I'm looking forward to wandering around this world, fighting pirates, and catching exotic diseases in equally exotic locales.
My one complaint is that we haven't actually won a fight yet. Well, except for Erin and Ashak. And when you always lose, it gets hard to get back up and try again. Then again, it also makes victory sweeter, when you finally push through.

Fair criticism. Maybe I'll look for a way to throw in some "random" encounters. The pacing of PBP probably exacerbates the issue. A big part of my idea for this campaign was that there would be challenges you can't beat at first, but that you would be able to repeat until you do. You're right that I should have paid more attention to making sure these were balanced with encounters meant to be won the first time.
The members of my in-person group for this campaign did individual prequel adventures to introduce each player to their character and the setting, each designed to include an encounter that their character was particularly suited to win. I built those characters for them, so that was easier to do. I haven't managed to herd the cats to get that group into a joint session yet, but I'll have to keep that in mind when I do.
I will say that although you may not have "won" a combat encounter yet, you are gaining XP (I'm not having you track it, but I do have some story milestones in mind) and you HAVE succeeded at some things that COULD have become combat encounters if they had gone differently. If it helps, you're more than half way to level 4.

Alright hear me out. We strap Ashak's boots to Erin, they'll be big but with some extra socks and some rope they should stay on fine. Evalee summons a small aether elemental. The elemental uses telekinetic throw to launch Erin (with Chi in her pocket) straight to the flag, thanks to the boots she lands nimbly on her feet. Erin grabs the flag and glides back down on Chi's back. The rest of us distract the one guard on the west side. Pogug could charm them possibly?
Pogug
Unfortunately my DC for charm person is... 14. We're looking at a coin flip, maybe worse.
The ramp idea I put in the post is more of a Pogug-level idea, but would it be possible to have an elemental attach a rope to the pole, then attach the other end to the treeline? It would likely be a difficult climb up it, but would be a good bit stealthier.

I like it. If there's ever a time I'd feel justified in pulling out an aether elemental, this is it. But if we'd rather not use the telekinetic throw, I'm pretty sure a small air elemental would be strong enough to lift her - its light load is already 33 lbs.
whosawhatsis
I was wondering the same thing. If she leaves all of her gear behind, she should be able to stay within its light load, but even so, I'm not sure how OK I am with one creature flying while carrying another creature its own size. That seems like it would be unwieldy. Flying magically rather than using wings helps, but the fact that the creature is literally made of air seems like it would negate that benefit.
Erin Reynor
Hmm... My main thought was that if Erin were just a 30-lb. sack of bricks, then the elemental could definitely carry her, right? That would just be a standard light load. So I'm not sure how the fact that she's a creature would make her that much harder to lift. She wouldn't be able to do much while being carried, of course, but it seems like the elemental should still be able to haul her from point A to point B.

I do see your point. On the other hand, like the flying mount, I'm a little worried that it will set a game-breaking precedent. I'd be happier with a solution that required a little more creativity. I think I'd be willing, for instance, to say that an air elemental can, as a standard action when it is directly under Chi as he is gliding, create an updraft that negates the 5ft he would normally drop during one (up to 40ft) move.
Ashak the Acrobat
Ashak is rapidly proving himself unworthy of the title "acrobat". I'm trying to shift the narration to seem somewhat environmental to preserve a sliver of his dignity. I have a rather monty python-esque image of the supposedly nimble hobgoblin repeatedly tripping up and falling over.

I think it's oddly kind of fun having a character that always believes he wins - Pogug is sort of a Don Quixote esque character now that I think about it.
Can the next encounter be a windmill?
Erin Reynor
None of us have obscuring mist on our spell list, so we'll have to rely on Evalee's +9 Use Magic Device - making it pretty unreliable in an emergency.
The bloodrager spell list isn't the best for subterfuge, but Erin's probably looking at spells like blade lash, frostbite, infernal healing, long arm, mount, or touch of the sea.
Pogug
Silent Image isn't a bad idea and it's on the bard spell list so Pogug can use it. Wish we could get some Invisibility - it would work wonders (although maybe make it too easy. The +20 is no joke).

I can think of ways you could use at least 14 of the first-level illusion/conjuration/transmutation spells on the bloodrager spell list to help with your capture the flag game. Just sayin'.

It looks like several of the best options don't work in wand form, since their casting time is increased to a standard action. Spells like cheetah's sprint, stone shield, windy escape, and so on.
But okay, now you've got me inspired. Let's see...
Blurred movement to gain constant concealment as long as I keep taking double moves. Bouncy body to drop down from far above and just bounce up to the top of the tent. Break to rip a hole in the tent wall and sneak in. Expeditious excavation to dig a pit beneath it and slip under that way. Jump to boost Chi's Acrobatics bonus to even more insane levels so he can just leap up. Reduce person to help my Stealth bonus and make me light enough for an air elemental to carry without a problem.
Wait, that last one might actually work really well! Erin could shrink out in the trees, and the elemental would have a minute to lift her and Chi as high as it can. Then Chi jumps off and grows to Medium in mid-glide, the elemental sets Erin on his back, and they swoop down on the unsuspecting flag from above. Thoughts?

Let's give it a go! We should also use disguise self on Nathaniel (he's tied for second best disguise score in the party, and can't use any of the wands) to make him look like one of the guards who isn't in the area and can't contest our claim, and he can walk in the front door. (Also, Evalee can try casting from the wand a couple of times, since there's no rush.)
Pogug's and Ashak's stealth gets even better under cover of obscuring mist, is there anything else we can do to boost them further?
And we might be able to rig something up with silent image and Semsephiel's outrageous bluff, something to give him "convincing evidence." That'll take Evalee's actions too, to mantain the illusion.
Basically, I think we need as many win conditions as possible, since no plan survives contact with the enemy.

Methinks I spot a slight problem with this plan.

Well, Pogug could try using blurred movement and expeditious retreat to zoom in there and climb up the tent before anyone can spot him.
Or maybe he could take the social approach and stack on disguise self, vocal alteration, and innocence to become the ultimate infiltrator.

Palms face, slips face in pocket.
I wasn't thinking. My most recent experience with Disguise Self was a Hat of Disguise which, of course, anyone could wear. What's funny, though, is that I correctly guessed where that link led before I clicked it. I think this is the point where I complement your taste in comics as a not-so subtle way of implying that I too have good taste in comics?

I google imaged "my little pony rainbowdash" because I was looking to make a visual joke about Evalee's mount spell.
Google made suggestions as to what I could add to my search to find just the image I sought. It's brilliant algorithms learned from the best, you see, so it knew what it was talking about. It suggested, in order, "my little pony rainbowdash kiss", "my little pony rainbowdash hot", "my little pony rainbowdash starlight glimmer", "my little pony rainbowdash dead" and, best for last, I suppose, "my little pony rainbowdash pregnant".
What. The. F*~#.

Okay, so for sick curiosity, I decided to use the same search for BING instead. You know, just in case.
The results were:
-my little pony rainbow dash fanfiction
-my little pony rainbow dash crying
-my little pony rainbow dash game
-my little pony rainbow dash coloring pages
-my little pony rainbow dash sleeping
-my little pony rainbow dash plush
-my little pony rainbow dash party
...surprisingly innocent, I guess?
