Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

We can't see the distances in here. Would Ashlyn have been able to get to Jenner in a 5' step?

Yes. Ashlyn can 5ft to Jenner.

Jenner is unable to strike the troll in front of him, although Tettia's missiles do the job for him. Unfortunately its wounds continue to close slowly and the troll seems confident.

Sarine's opponent is unable to stop her hammering at him, cutting a deep gash into its thick leg. Ashlyn's magic trident glances off as Aurelian Fache leaps into the fray! His rapier stabs in just as the scrag lashes out with a huge claw, smashing into his beautiful face!

AAO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

J Bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
J Claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
J Claw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

S Bite: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 - 2 = 13 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
S Claw: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 - 2 = 8 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
S Claw: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 = 19 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Jenner's defensive posture helps him, barely, avoid all the troll's blows, while Sarine takes only a glancing blow as her opponent seems to be avoiding Aurelian as much as possible.

Party Up!

Jenner takes another cautious swing at the scrag...

All those defenses: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

And then a defensive, cautious step back.... 5-ft back, if the troll has reach I'm probably still within its reach.

"Gotta get it on land or we're cuttin' at it for no reason," the dwarf mutters through bloodied lips. AC remains at 24

"Stupid, ugly, ... poop-head!" Tettia yells out at the scrag tussling with Jenner. She speaks the words to a different spell and a cloud of shiny dust settles on the vicious creature.

glitterdust targeted a little ways behind the scrag so Jenner isn't in the AoE. DC 17 Will save or be blinded for 5 rounds. May continue to attempt to save for the duration.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Sarine's AC was 23 last turn since she was fighting defensively & such. I'm not sure that I should have taken that damage.

"Time to finish this," Sarine growls as she lunges toward the troll in front of her.

6/14 rounds of bloodrage remaining, 4/10 temporary hp remaining, power attack
Attack vs Scrag 2: 1d20 + 12 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 12 + 2 - 2 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 8 + 2 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 8 + 2 + 6 = 27

If Scrag 2 is down & Scrag 1 is not blind:
Sarine would want to move over to Jenner and help to haul him further away from the troll. Would a reposition work for that?

Reposition: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 + 2 = 30 - I'm not sure that Jenner has to resist that, but I rolled well regardless.

If Scrag 2 is down & Scrag 1 is blind:
I guess we could just have her move up to the troll and use her attack above on it?

Sorry Sarine, I missed your fighting defensively. No damage.

Aurelian and Sarine fell the troll with two mighty blows, Ashlyn's trident driving in to ensure that it will never rise again. The two warriors move across the room to flank Jenner, presenting a wall of blades just outside of the trolls reach.

Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Tettia's spell blinds the troll and it stumbles backwards, deeper into the water, thrashing and trying unsuccessfully to clear its eyes.

The remaining scrag has retreated deeper into the water. It will be up to the waists of people who follow it in to fight.

All the defensive stuff again: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 (My math was off in previous posts by 1, thanks to Sarine for catching my error... still a horrible miss though.

Under the heroes combined assault the scrag collapses and slips into the dark water. It doesn't rise again...

Out of combat rounds. The scrag has disappeared (read: collapsed) underwater and isn't moving. In fact its very hard to see because it isn't doing anything.

Assuming you intend to finish your rest
The guards remain vigilant for the rest of the night and your peace is undisturbed. However it is clear that the owners of the tower know that you are here...

You regain all spells except for any slots used during the fight with the scrags. Technically I think Tettia shouldn't regain any at all, but that feels overly mean!

The only way onwards lies up the stairs, further into the tower proper.

As much as I'd like to, I'm much too experienced a player to take that personally. ;) ;P

Tettia looks up with her new spell readied, but doesn't see a target now.

"Is it gone? Did we win?" she asks, looking around curiously.

After the rest ...

"Should we bother trying to be, you know, sneaky? 'Cause I think they know we're here."

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Sarine wakes up from her rest, still aching from the fight with the scrags the night before. She sits up with a groan and stretches before rising from her bedroll as her cat walks by her. Halfway to her feet, Sarine stops and stares at Socks.

"Wait, you can talk?!" she exclaims at the feline.

The remainder of the group catches bits of one-sided conversation between Sarine and her familiar as morning preparation continues. As the group readies to continue further up the tower, Sarine approaches them with a chagrined look on her face.

"That's a good point, Tettia. Everyone, this is Narue," she says, introducing her familiar to them again. "He has offered to scout ahead for us."

Reminder: Narue disappears if he gets more than 100' from Sarine.

"So... are we trying to be quiet, or not? Because Elizar really wants to come out, but if we're trying to be quiet he probably... shouldn't?"

She cocks her head to the side, then makes a few faces, clearly in response to something Elizar is no doubt wailing in her head.

"It's so wonderful to meet you, Narue," Tettia says with a smile. Being introduced to a feline seems to raise no eyebrows with her. "I'll request that you give all consideration to my friend, Wallace, and not try to eat him or ... or anything." She reaches into her pouch and pulls the struggling toad out.

"You be polite," she hisses at the reluctant amphibian.

"Wallace, Narue. Narue, Wallace," she says politely as if introducing two ladies at a charity ball. "I'm sure you'll be the best of friends."

brruupp.

"Don't be rude."

Tettia returns Wallace to her pouch and smiles at Sarine. "Please give my thanks to Narue for being very brave. And Wallace didn't really mean what he said. He's grumpy in the morning."

Narue finds a lot of 'big empties' with 'no mice or interesting things'. Once he says 'I could pee on this'. But the only thing that's clear is that nothing within his range is moving or alive.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

"Thank you, Narue," Sarine says after the familiar meows at her briefly.

"He couldn't go very far ahead, but he didn't see any more scrags at least. The nearby chambers seem to be clear. Let's go see what we can find."

"So the demon cat is no longer named Socks?" Aurelian asks, somewhat confused. "Is it no longer a demon either?"

Once all acquaintances have been renewed, he shakes his head.

"Aurelian can be very sneaky, but sometimes it can be better to be upfront," he says. "If Elizar wishes to come out and smash things, that might be of us. Perhaps you can persuade him to be quiet until we have started fighting?"

I say bring him out. Afterward, let's progress. Aurelian will take the lead.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Sarine winces as Aurelian asks her about the change in her familiar, "He's not a demon. Can we not talk about this right now? I'm in enough trouble as it is..."

"Let's move on. Our people are waiting for us."

Sarine is down 11 hp after resting. She's otherwise ready for action.

Ashlyn claps her hands in glee. "Oh, yes! Thanks, Aurelian!" She spends a minute drawing Elizar out of her, and when he appears she throws her arms around him in a big, goopy, hug!

"Oh! Sarine! You're still wounded. Here, let me see."

Sorry for the slowness.

With the knowledge that scrags heal as long as they're in water, thanks to Tettia, Jenner leaves nothing to chance-- he insists on kicking around under the water until he can find the limp scrag, dragging it out of the water, and seeing it beheaded with his axe before he is willing to do anything like 'go back to sleep.'

Jenner wakes with aches and pains, but he does have some grace of Abadar restored to him...

After Ashlyn's heal the day prior and the 4 hp gained from resting, I'd be at 21. 3 fervors take me to: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2) = 9 = 30/32. I'll carry on with that for right now. Throwing up longstrider on myself and swapping 'suppress charms' for 'ironskin' for today.

Jenner observes with quiet bemusement the introduction of the cat. "...Hello, Narue," he offers, warily. "Lord of the Vault, with the frog, the cat, and the ghost, I feel my beard might become hiss own entity at this rate, and whatever should I name him?"

"Well, let's go see what's ahead, then."

....... ...... okay, apparently I leveled to 5th in my offline file, as well as in the discussion thread, and never freaking updated my freaking sheet on Paizo. Well, aren't I a genius. Er, yes, that is to say, I am missing a die there, and I will get that sorted. *facepalm*

The party climbs the stairs and emerges into a great foyer, full of faded majesty. Walls once decorated with colorful murals are now flecked with mold, the discolored paint peeling off in large flakes. A strong odor of brine and musk clings to the air. However, no amount of disrepair can diminish the awe-inspiring scale of the two thirty-foot-tall statues that loom in this room, flanking a weathered marble altar that bears the seal of a star and spiral. The eastern statue depicts a robed goddess in a dramatic pose, holding a knife in the air with the blade angled down toward herself. A blindfold shrouds this figure's eyes, and she clutches a stone hourglass under one arm. The western statue depicts a young woman in robes like those of her partner, with hair flowing down to her ankles, a pair of immense butterfly wings, and a five-pointed star held in one hand over her head.

The interior doors lead to a corridor where centuries of disrepair and water intrusion have caused considerable damage. Mold blotches the walls and floor while the stink of sulfur mixes with a musky odor. A nest of filthy rags, damp cloth, seaweed, and bones occupies the corner by the northern door.

Through those northern doors lies a small kitchen now lies in ruin. Humanoid bones, strips of decaying flesh, and clusters of oyster shells and tangled seaweed cover the counters. The entire room smells of sweat and brine mixed with a tangy, sulfuric musk. A twisted nest of waterlogged cloth, partly dried seaweed, and gnarled animal carcasses fills the middle of the room.

Within the tangle of carcasses rests a single pewter cuff bearing the seal of Andoran.

Opposite the kitchen is a spacious room containing the shattered wooden frames of beds and some dilapidated, threadbare cloth mattresses placed in a pile, atop which a foul nest of animal bones, seaweed, and other watery detritus is heaped. A battered and rusted tower shield emblazoned with the spiral-and-star symbol that was on the door serves as a "headboard" of sorts. Behind it, you discover a small assortment of gemstones, worth 350 gp total.

The final room on the ground floor is a cavernous library which lies in terrible disrepair. The stone shelves set into the walls are cracked, chipped, and split, and heaps of ruined, ancient tomes lie scattered across the floor. A tile mosaic in the room’s center depicting a spiraling comet with a star at its center has been shattered by multiple blunt impacts from fragments of marble slab shelves. What few books remain on the shelves have crumbled into illegible scraps of long-lost lore.

Searching through this room will take quite some time, an hour or more.

I've given you the whole bottom floor in one go since there are no more encounters. You can spend more time here or move on upstairs...

"Do you see? It looks like our predecessors may have been here!" Aurelian says triumphantly. "It looks like they were kept as animals, or worse. Aurelian Fache could never be so cruel ...

"But there is no time, so we can search for more clues after we have finished what we came to do!"

He gestures to the stairs; as he starts to ascend, he will call again on the protection of the stones in the sword. casting protection from evil as I go up

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

After wonder at the grand statues in the first room, Sarine's demeanor turns grim as the party finds the humanoid skeletons and the Andoran cuff. "It only makes sense, but still...we had to hope."

Angered at the discovery, she is in little mood to search through the library. "We've announced our presence. It would be rude to keep them waiting further, don't you think?" she asks.

We should probably search for more traps as we go up the stairs, but as we start reaching the top, she'll cast Shield if nothing happens to stop her before we proceed.

At the first sight of the grand room, Tettia's immediate response is to pull out her sketchbook and begin quick studies of both statues. As the group moves along, her hand moves as fast as possible, adding more snippets to her recorded images.

At the discovery of the ruined library, her eyes go wide and she almost drops her drawing tools. With numbed hands she returns them to her backpack and moves forward as if in shock. She stumbles to her knees in front of a particularly sodden pile of books. With a trembling hand she reaches out to open the useless book. "All lost." She turns to look back at the others and they can see the tears in her eyes. "All this knowledge - lost." This seems to have affected her far more than the discovery of humanoid remains.

When Sarine and Aurelian recommend moving on, she nods her head mutely and follows. She doesn't continue her sketches.

I apologize, didn't realize anyone was waiting on me.

"Aye, let's meet whatever's waiting and come back to see if any of this can be salvaged," Jenner grunts, taking his usual spot behind Sarine and Aurelian as they climb the stairs. No buffing other than the already-mentioned longstrider

Two sprawling bas-reliefs decorate the second-floor landing. The interior wall is engraved with depictions of a robed Azlanti man bearing a sword and an unmarked shield, battling a colossal demonic creature in a hellish landscape. The outer wall is likewise carved with a dramatic bas-relief etched with the finest details, in this case illustrating a turbulent ocean. In the image, shattered pieces of land are spiraling down toward the center of a massive whirlpool, each with fragmentary pieces of crumbling cities atop them. A single shaft of light or energy lances up from the middle of the whirlpool to the top of the relief.

A pair of staircases wrapping along the outer walls ascend and descend the tower, while double doors embellished with images of Desna and Pharasma are located in alcoves at the top of each staircase.

Knw His/Panes DC25:
The inner wall depicts a figure that is most likely Aroden (though many of the physical details diverge from how he is usually portrayed) battling the demon lord Deskari, an event that took place thousands of years after the destruction of Azlant.

The relief on the outer wall is more open to interpretation. It either shows the destruction of Azlant (though by different means), or it depicts an event that has not yet transpired. It is clearly showing the destruction of an island landmass as the ocean floor collapses into an impossibly large vortex.

Focusing on the task at hand, Sarine casts her Shield spell for protection and moves to a set of double doors and attempts to push them open.

If I'm reading correctly, there are two sets of double doors on this landing?

Aurelian nods, sword out and ready to support Sarine should there be anything else behind the doors.

He glances behind, sure Tettia will be telling them all about the panels momentarily.

Tettia is either unable or unwilling to expound upon the significance of the carvings. She seems quite lost in her thoughts.

Yep, two sets of doors.

Both doors open onto adjoining chambers. A long-collapsed oaken table litters each of these rooms, along with the dilapidated and ancient-looking remains of several chairs. The far end of the rooms open onto another chamber.

Here, an enormous marble basin sits on a stone dais flanked by iron braziers. The inside of the basin is caked with dried blood, and dark splotches mar the steps leading up to it. Behind the dais, an etched mural depicts the goddess Pharasma with her head down, cradling the light of a single star between cupped hands. Desna is depicted standing behind her, arms wrapped around Pharasma's shoulders and butterfly wings outspread behind her. Opposite this dais is a pair of enormous stone doors engraved with arcane writing and geometric shapes.

Perception DC22:
You can hear the faint rattling of chains behind the stone doors.

The arcanist still seems preoccupied as she wanders over to the stone doors to trace her fingers over the arcane writing. She sets her bag down on the ground and reaches in it to pull out her magical spectacles. Setting the large round frames on her face, she steps back to get a better view of the writings.

Ashlyn stares at the images on the walls (in the first room) in wonder. "Wow... This inner wall here depicts Aroden––or, at least I think it does. He looks a little different than he's usually portrayed––anyway, he's fighting the demon lord Deskari.See? These events took place thousands of years AFTER the destruction of Azlant. But... they're here. Which is weird. And kind of cool, I think! Anyway, this other relief over here," she points at the other wall. "This one shows either the destruction of Azlant –– though it's being destroyed by the wrong things –– or its showing something that hasn't happened yet or is made up. Whatever it is, it's clearly showing the destruction of an island landmass as the ocean floor collapses into an impossibly large vortex."

She grins. "Ominous! Right?"

Noticing the others are already checking out the doors she blushes. "Whoops! Sorry. I'm coming."

She hurries after the others and into the next chamber. Seeing more neat carvings she checks them out with Sarine.

But, they're totally confusing!

Heeding Sarine's warning of movement beyond the door, Ashlyn holds her hands up, ready to fight.

"Ready when you are," she announces.

If we don't learn anything about the door, let's just open it up and push forward.

Aurelian nods, sword drawn and ready. He balances on the balls of his feet, ready to move should whatever's rattling prove to be a threat.

"Perhaps it is one of our predecessors, still chained up here," he suggests hopefully in a muted whisper.

The door, while elaborately carved, doesn't seem to have any particular meanings. Inside is a small room containing a chained up figure - some eight feet tall if he wasn't so hunched over. When he hears the door open he raises his head and it becomes clear that the figure is a cyclops, who has had his eye torn from his skull...

"What is this?" Aurelian asks, a rare horror filling his voice. "This is monstrous!"

"This is Aurelian Fache, not your mistress. You tell Aurelian who has done this to you and where to find her and he will make sure it's the last thing she does!" he says.

"No more tests," Sarine says. "What is your name?"

After hearing the creature's response to Aurelian's question and her own:

"We are here to find our people, other humans. Are they near or up?"

There's a chance that this thing is hostile/loyal to the witch. I'm currently thinking that Sarine would want to free him anyway, so long as he agrees not to attack them as they break his chains. If he wants to attack them immediately after, that's his choice. Andoran and all that... In any case, let's not spend an extended time talking to this guy: we have spells running.
