Everything beyond a year was gone. Her first memories were of pain, cold, and rain. She'd been found outside the village of Wicken on the verge of death. Her back had been badly burned, and her limbs were covered in dozens of small cuts. Her clothing was little more than rags and cinders, and her hair had been burned brutally short. The healer told her she was lucky to be alive when she finally came to a week later.
All that was left to her was her name, Audria. She could remember how to talk and walk, but nothing of her past. Over the months the villagers grew used to her and she earned her keep by painting and performing at the tavern. She had proven to be a lively and skilled minstrel which made her a favorite of the townsfolk.
There was that nagging feeling she always had though, that doubt that the kind, sweet girl was only an act, a mask adopted because she had forgotten her true face. She had tried to ignore it, but the ever growing tension she felt was becoming harder and harder to ignore. Was she really who she thought she was, who she so desperately wanted to be, or was it all a lie?
Audria is a small, young woman with a childlike look about her. Her hair is the color of darkly stained oak and her eyes are a bright grey like silver. She is petite, almost fairy like in her build.
She is often called a sweetheart and blushes at even the slightest of compliments. She is self-conscious about her scars, so she takes care to always keep them covered with long sleeves, tall boots and tops with close-fitting necks.
Hopefully that's enough hooks and freedom for the GM to have some fun. On a side note, once you start getting into the habit of showing and not telling in your writing, it can feel like you're a hack if you do something like above.
@Zed - Let me know if I need to flesh things out some more.

Oscar Hartwell |
Luriel please reconsider, especially given the OOC post GM Zed made recently in the discussion thread.
I agree our characters are probably incompatible. We seem to have a fundamental disagreement about the setting baked into the very core of our characters. I seriously doubt GM Zed would seat them together.

I am just shocked it was not Salom who first had his hide threatened.
But seriously, sad to see Luriel bounce out so quickly. While this isn't the place for pvp, interparty conflict can be an RP goldmine. Sometimes it's easy to take things personally, but these are just characters, and they can take on a life of their own, leading us to places we hadn't intended. That can be a very exciting thing, especially if we can focus on a common goal, as players in these adventures always do.
Gillian Flynn |
@GM Zed - Despite being enthusiastic about Gillian and the idea of the game, I think I'm going to withdraw myself from the running. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that potentially adding another long-term game right now wouldn't be particularly responsible of me.
I wish everyone else the best of luck and good games all around!

It took me forever to hit on a concept that spoke to me, but here is my submission Arvede Aristide, a Mambo (priestess) and Bokor (sorcerer). Mechanically, she's a juju oracle, though she's not going to be focused on undead creation. If selected, Arvede will provide backup melee, some face skills, buffing, healing/condition removal, and a bit of control.
I'll get over to the discussion tab a bit later this evening. Thanks for the consideration!
Drin |
Good luck all and thanks for the great RP opportunities. I hope to get the opportunity to play with you all, if not now hopefully sometime in the future. Th rp really helped flesh out my PC's personality/voice! Also, thank you Aishe(Euan) for sharing your advice/ideas via PM! It was really nice to see that this is more than a place where we can play games (which is fun) but a community that is willing to help each other!
In sum, below is the root of my submission:
Name: Drin
Class: Ranger (Trapper)
Race: Halfling
COMBAT: Switch Hitter (focused on melee), Skirmisher, Damage dealer, and minor debuffer using ranger traps at 4th level.
OUT of COMBAT: Scout, Trapfinder

I've just read the thread, after seeing it ping into the recent top ten.
I've been looking for a PbP in general, and any discussion of the Blight in particular, and this fulfilled both.
If there's still space, I'd love to apply, if there isn't, no hard feelings, and I'd ask if I could be on a reserve list, in case anyone drops out.
The back and forth on the discussion thread seems way in advance of what passes for roleplay in most groups, thank you all for a good read.
And the fact so many of you brought songs and poetry to the table made me grin, as I've been slipping similar homages into Wayfinder for the last four years.
For disclosure; I did back the Blight Kickstarter, and have the material to download, but I've yet to begin reading it, as my home group's tabletop campaign has probably got many months to go.
I'm happy to hold off reading any GM material, if required.
I think experiencing it as a player first would be beneficial to running it when that day comes.
Otto von Daniken |
Sorry for the delay, the site crashed on me, so I'll have to update this alias later.
Otto was the son of a successful merchant family, until one day his world fell apart when creditors came to recover his father's previously unknown gambling debts.
As bailiffs were removing their possessions, his father pushed a key into his hand, with a scrap of paper on which was written an address.
He was then seized, and dragged from the house, never to be seen again. Attempts by the family to have him returned were thwarted by there being no official record of an arrest, leading them to believe the men taking him away may not have been legal agents of the Crown.
With their accounts seized, and little means of earning a living, his mother and sisters pooled with him what savings they had hidden, and moved from one lodgings to another, taking whatever work they could.
Otto traced the address on the slip to a safe depositry, where his key opened a box containing a sword, a locket, volumes on geneology, and a short letter to his father in an unknown hand, telling him to keep these safe until further notice.
The sword had an interesting crossguard, in the shape of an deer or yale's antlers, but was of otherwise average quality. The locket contained a silhouette of an unknown lady.
The books were filled with the family histories of Taldan families of the last 500 years, with furious scribbled marginal notes, in several hands, suggesting these were false, but with no clue as to the writers, or the identity of the items owners.
Having few possessions, and fearing he would not be able to afford the rental on the bank's deposit box, Otto took the items. He would take them out to examine them, as he read the books, but was no wiser as to their origin. He would fall asleep with them, and found himself having vivid dreams, where he was rescuing the 'fair maiden' of the locket, or his father, using the sword to cleave through a small army of thugs, criminals, gamblers and gangsters, sent by shadowy figures, who recoiled from his shouted challenge. He put this down to stress and fanciful heroic novels, and thought no more of it, till the day he had to defend himself from a group of muggers who demanded he hand over his fancy sword. He experienced a 'red mist' come over himself, and he reportedly demanded they disperse and acknowledge their betters, before running one through with a now-glowing blade. As the others fled, Otto panicked at the dying body at his feet. Though he may be able to claim self defence, he had no funds for a lawyer, and also feared his possessions may be impounded as evidence. He fled the scene, jumped on a river boat, and sailed to the coast, where he wrote a short letter to his family to advise them he was well, and now finds himself at a loose end, looking for gainful employment, and if this allows a score to be settled with the unsavoury criminal elements, he would consider that a bonus.

And as the story teller closes the book on the first pages, a disagreeably cheerful tale about the Smiling Pig, he looks around... the audience had grown for sure, he smiles a terrible smile - blackened teeth and savagely torn lips - and throws his tankard of dirty rain water onto the fire...
"You want to hear the rest of the story? Do you Really want to hear my tale?".
And so Recruitment has closed - thanks to everyone who has taken part in what has proven to be an engaging prelude to the darkness that must surely follow... the cruel task of selecting my victims now faces me - I have a few ideas but, no doubt, it'll take me a day or so to make my final decisions.
Watch this space...
GM Zed |
Best of luck to everyone. Zed you have a lot of fun characters to mull over. Sorry for the lack of posting in the smiling pig, I had a box fall on my head at work and I have been doing minimal posting.
Yeah... wow, ouch!!! Hope no long lasting damage was sustained... next time, use a Hero Point for your Reflex Save.
GM Zed |
So, of course it was a really difficult decision to make... and, as with any recruitment I have had to leave a whole load of really great characters behind. I really enjoyed your time in the Smiling Pig and I hope some of the folks who aren't coming straight into Castorhage with me might still make some kind of appearance in the future...
So, without further ado, the Storyteller turns his bloodshot eyes towards five figures near the fire...

"Reporting!"
Thanks for taking Moira along for this adventure, GM Zed!
And thanks to all of you who showed up at the Pig and had a conversation with Moira. I have never had so much fun with an opening tavern scene. I'd be glad to adventure with any of you--maybe someday we'll meet again. Special shout-outs to Oscar and Euphemia, hope those two get to skip ahead to "happily ever after" (or find other adventures)--and to Drin, Methilius, and Velrun, I really enjoyed interacting with y'all.
