About Ian McGoon

Description Ian is an imposing man who stands six-foot-three. He is broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, and often seems like he's about to burst out of his clothing. His head is bald and he wears an elaborate handlebar mustache, of which he is quite vain. He dresses very stylishly, typically in a starched white shirt, brightly-colored cravat, dark waistcoat and matching trousers, and polished boots. He also is rarely seen without his bowler hat and elaborately-carved walking stick.

Background Born "Ian McGowan," Ian was always getting into fights as a young man. After witnessing Ian winning a tavern brawl, a promoter from Castorhage offered Ian a job as a professional bare-knuckle boxer in the Outland Circuit (seen as a "farm league" to the higher-stakes fighting rings in Castorhage proper). Not having many other prospects, Ian took him up on the offer, and he became a moderately-successful prize fighter in the outlying towns and villages, fighting under the stage name "Ian McGoon." His career as a boxer seemed promising, and he won a long string of victories, making a fair amount with the awarded purses. But after about a year of it, he found that his manager started putting him up against people even larger than him... some of whome seemed to be augmented by drugs, alchemy, or even magic. Ian started losing important matches he had been favored to win... and he realized that his manager was deliberately setting him up to lose in order to win big by betting on his opponents. Ian quit the boxing circuit in disgust. Deciding to make a clean break with his fighting career, he apprenticed himself to a successful barber in the village of Wartle, quickly becoming popular barber-chirurgeon among the townsfolk. His services include shaves (with optional hot towels), haircuts, and minor chirurgery. All-in-all, he truly enjoys his second career.
