The Gathering Storm (4e)

Game Master Rev Rosey

I liked this one, but we lost half the players to real life at a time when I was heroically busy. It counts as an honourable failure on the roster - and the only game I've ever deliberately put on hiatus.

Male Human Cleric 6

stupid clerical 5 sq range.

Gloop.

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

"Go ahead, stay together. This makes my job much easier." Another burst of flame scorches the slimes.

Scorching Burst at F13 vs GC1 and 2(vs Reflex, fire damage): 1d2 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 91d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 131d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Zareth - can you reroll your attack against G1 please. You accidentally typed 1d2. The second one is a miss.

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

Oh. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

More of cube 1 melts away and its clear that neither can last much longer. To the party members wearing cube, this can only be good news.

MAP

Kitherra - +5 AC to end next turn; engulfed - dazed and taking 10 damage
Kel
Andrus - Engulfed - dazed and taking 10 acid damage until escape
Urlag - used second wind; engulfed - dazed and taking 10 acid damage until escape
Tenja - engulfed - dazed and taking 10 acid until escape
Gelatinous Cube 1 - BLOODIED; Urlag's Quarry
Gelatinous Cube 2 - BLOODIED; marked by Tenja; slowed to end Tenja's next turn
Zareth

To a dwarf, a gelantinous cube is merely an accessory.

This season's must-have item for comfy slime-wear.

female Dwarf Runepriest 6

Kitherra's hammer rises and falls once more, the acid not seeming to dissuade her.

Word of Exchange, vs AC. 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29, on hit: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 damage and the next ally that hits cube 1 before the end of my next turn does 3 extra damage and gains 3 temp hp

HP: 40/48
Surges: 7/10
AP: 1/1
Mending: 2/2
Enc. Used: Flames of Purity, Elemental Legacy, Second Wind
Daily Used: Shield of Sacrifice
Runestate: Destruction, Allies gain +1 to attack enemies adjacent to me.

Crit! Add 1d6 ⇒ 6

Male Human Cleric 6

was that THREE crits in a row? with the DICE ROLLER?? Truly, Avandra shines down on you.

EDIT: I just checked. not three in a row, but three in one encounter, using the dice roller. I never had that kind of luck when I used it. which is why I hand-roll.

Kith emerges from the bowels of Cube 1, freeing Urlag at the same time. The floor is a mess, but neither the forgeborn or the half-orc seem much the worse for wear.

MAP

Kel
Andrus - Engulfed - dazed and taking 10 acid damage until escape
Urlag - used second wind
Tenja - engulfed - dazed and taking 10 acid until escape
Gelatinous Cube 2 - BLOODIED; marked by Tenja; slowed to end Tenja's next turn
Zareth
Kitherra

Male Elf Ranger

Kel shoots at the last cube trying not to hit his friends inside it.

1st arrow, attack vs ac, 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19, damage = 1d12 + 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (9) + (2) + 6 = 17
2nd arrow, attack vs ac, 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22, damage = 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

The floor is awash with jelly as Kel's arrows break the surface tension of the last cube and it collapses, releasing Andrus and Tenja.

OUT OF COMBAT. Take 550XP each, bringing you to 6,050 total.

female Dwarf Runepriest 6

I have two mendings available for people who need post combat healing. Surge+1d6, so, take 'em if ya want.

Kith smiles in satisfaction and then she starts to search the room.

Male Elf Ranger

Kel will take one, 1d6 ⇒ 6 extra hp and spend one more HS to get to allmost full..

HP: 44/46
Surges: 5/8
AP: 1/1

"That was entirely unpleasant. It makes me want to find more crows and pluck 'em and scramble their eggs into omelets."

2 surges spent, full health. For the amount extra I would have had to spend two either way to get even close to full. So someone else can have one.

Tenja grabs the closest crow and starts to wipe off the gunk with its feathers and cloths. "I really hope this thing doesnt have lice. I would hate for that to come up again."

Kith finds little of value in the room, but ample evidence that it was originally used as a trophy room and entrance hall for the Stormcrows. Kicking her way through the gloop, she finds the digested remains of several incautious kenku with their mundane equipment, 66 silver pieces and a potion of healing.

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

No benefit to me, thanks. Still need exactly one surge to be at full, leaving 5. Still have my AP.

Male Human Cleric 6

the acid damage was on my turn, right? or did I have to take 10 when I was engulfed? I just want to make sure I got my hp right.

"Is everyone alright? Those cubes were a lot harder than the kenkus." Andrus says as he brushes the goop off his clothes. "What did you find, Kith?" He asks Kitherra when he notices her searching the remains. "Anything interesting?"

Andrus thinks for a minute and then asks the others, "So did the Stormcrows get turned into kenkus? Or did the Kenkus kill the Stormcrows and take their home?"

"A good question. Maybe they changed into some shapechanging cult."

Male Human Cleric 6

"Truly, they have become the crows they named themselves if that is the case." Andrus muses.

Andrus - the acid damage was on your turn, so you didn't take it :)

female Dwarf Runepriest 6

"Junk. Some silver, a potion. We still have more rooms to search, maybe we'll find answers."

I'll drop one surge on me, just to be at full. Toss the potion to Urlag or Tenja? Or one of the ranged people? 11 silver each, too, we're rich :)

I can spend a surge as a minor as a cleric, so Urlag as a melee striker would be a good choice.

Male Human Cleric 6

i'm cool with giving it to Urlag, unless Kel is planning on spending several turns inside every monster we encounter. heh. ;)

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

What's the skill for kenku? If these were typical or atypical, that might be useful to know. Trying Nature, but not trained.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Nature for Kenku. These chaps look like completely normal (if you count being dissolved as normal). No signs of possession or abnormally high intellect.

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

Urlag's got one potion, and an amulet that lets him double up. If nobody else wants the new one, he'll take it, but it's not an urgent need.

I can't really tell from the map -- are there obvious exits?

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

Spending one HS.

Andrus Blake wrote:

"I doubt it. They are three Storm Crows and at least five kenku. That doesn't exactly add up."

"Still, no reason to just sit around here and wait for the place to clear itself out."

Male Elf Ranger

"Could be the kenku are just minions for the others?"

Mutters about pointy horned magic user logic. "I am not getting any younger, lets get out of here. All in agreement?"

For clarification :)

Ha! Consider it clarified. Thanks.

Male Elf Ranger

Check the door for any locks or traps.
Theivery = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
perception = 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Put me at D13.

Kel finds no traps or locks. The door is merely old, heavy and in poor condition.

female Dwarf Runepriest 6

D11

Map

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

E12, please

Male Tiefling Wizard 5

E11 for me.

The friends gather around the door.

D12

Male Human Cleric 6

"Here, I'll take that potion. I've got the materials to make my own potions, but it might be nice to have one already ready." Andrus says to Urlag.

my nature is untrained, too, but I have a better wis. nature= 1d20+6= 16. You had a better roll, though.

Male Human Cleric 6

E13 for me.

Male Human Cleric 6

"What about that pit? I wonder what it was used for?" Andrus asks as he looks back at the pit.

did we examine the pit? is there anything to see there? I am for moving along if we are done with this place, but I don't want to leave any stone unturned.

The pit is just a pit. The digging is not expert. You would judge the original purpose to have been to trap a gelatinous cube as a snare for the unwary to walk on.

Opening the door reveals another stairwell, ten feet wide and leading down.

female Dwarf Runepriest 6

"Down we go." Kith says as she starts down the stairs.

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

"Right."

Using this marching order?

Tenja and Kitherra
Andrus and Zareth - Andrus clutching sunrod
Kel and Urlag

M Half-Orc Two-Weapon Ranger 6

Yes.
