Etu immediately recognizes the two scorched, desiccated figures by their horrific miens: Mummies. Something funny about these, though - they seem to be composites of Ancient Osirian necromancy and golemcraft, riddled with inorganic matter. This means that for purposes of effects based on creature type (such as a Ranger's Favored Enemy, etc etc), these mummies count as both Undead and Constructs.

Etu also knows one thing worth knowing about gynosphinxes, and....

Etu notices that the sphinx mummy seems more concerned with the other mummies; you may be as much an unknown quantity to her as she is to you.

The sentiment seems to be mutual, as the 'composite' mummies continue to ignore everything and everyone but the sphinx.

One, propped up from behind on some kind of massive upright gurney, wheels straight forward to deliver a stiff blow...

[dice="Strangelove" slam]1d20+14[/dice]

...while the other, a barely-recognizable horror of perfectly-fused flesh, stone, clay, and gods-alone-know-what-else, rushes with reckless force!

[dice="Beksinski" slam, charge, Power Attack]1d20+13[/dice]

Both, however, wind up missing horribly - comically, even.

Montgomery, I need you to make 2 Will saves vs paralysis/mind-affecting/fear/Evil (although the magic circle can't help you where you are).

Eladrian wrote:

The last thing you did was ready an attack for an enemy who never came your way.

Why are you only rolling +2 for your Will save? No matter; between the magic circle against Evil and Etu's Sermon, you make it.

Eladrian tumbles spectacularly through the fog with the sort of panache any Caydenite would swoon for, just in time to see the sphinx mummy, near-motionless up until now, suddenly explode into retributive fury!

She wastes no time (as a matter of fact, if such a thing as "making time" were possible, she might appear to be doing exactly that) swatting down the already-badly-damaged mummy in the gurney, and manages to get a mighty swipe in at the other one, too!

The bonus vs Fear is the same but on attack rolls it's different. Sermonic is the same as Bardic, so "An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls" except +3 in this case.

The party notices that the mummies' remains are littered with amethyst fragments, dozens of which have also fallen from the wrappings over the course of the fight.

Those who filed in later also noticed that the walls along the foggy hallway had been lined with alcoves containing scrolls of ancient poetry. The sphinx takes a moment to cast a momentary, suspicious glare in Eladrian's direction before staring directly back at Montgomery with intense, unblinking eyes.

Before she can speak, however, you hear footsteps and slow clapping from behind you - both sounding as though they were made by wooden hands and feet. They are coming from a man you hadn't noticed before in the corner of the room - well, not exactly a man, but a mannequin, covered in ancient, thick robes, and with an inscrutable purple ceramic mask for a face. Feel free to make Knowledge (Arcana) checks here. It - he - begins addressing you:

Ancient Osirian:
"Well done, Jeweled Sages! Your humble servants - now and forever - beg you'll forgive us both our childish spat. It's been a very, very long time since we've been checked in on, but nonetheless, we have remained faithful to our tasks at all times...or at least, *I* have."

The mannequin's gaze shifts toward the sphinx.

Ancient Osirian:
"Saruna, why not allow the rest of us some privacy? I think they have made their preferences clear."

The sphinx looks back at the mannequin.

Ancient Osirian:
"Who can claim victory on the draught-board when every single piece has been knocked off the board by an unexpected sandstorm? I concede nothing yet, Badru. Let these strangers speak their own intent."

The mannequin makes what might be an angry or incredulous gesture.

Ancient Osirian:
"Strangers?!? Must you ALWAYS conjure riddles where there are none? You would *dare* choose not to recognize your masters when you see them? Who else BUT Jeweled Sages could have made their way here?"

The sphinx is unmoved.

Ancient Osirian:
"You would accuse me of 'conjuring' riddles - but have you not just spoken one?"

With that, the mannequin and sphinx both turn - in fact, they pivot with eerie, unnatural smoothness - toward the party.

What do you do?

Following on what Etu started Montgomery pipes in, "Some of us are in fact cohorts of the modern incarnation of the Jeweled Sages, part of an organization known as the Scarab Sages."

Montgomery recognizes the statue dominating the room as a depiction of Thoth: Osirian god of magic, writing, and the moon, and patron of archivists and libraries.

Branson recognizes the thing overhead as a malign-natured elemental being known as a mihstu. This one appears less 'mature', for all the sense that that could make, than what would be considered typical. You may ask one more question.

Kramac and Montgomery instantly recognize the being named Badru as a soulbound mannequin - Montgomery in particular happens to know a great deal about them, although this one seems like it might have a few of its own...irregularities.

When Etu clarifies that you are not Jeweled Sages yourselves, but are working on behalf of their contemporary successors, Badru seems taken aback for a moment, but rallies quickly.

Ancient Osirian:
"That would make us...peers...in a common service. Splendid!" He loudly claps his wooden hands. "Allow me to formally introduce myself: I am Master of the Archives, Badru. I am a loyal servant of the great Jeweled Sages. We can indeed be of immense assistance to one another! Since you are now here, then that clearly means that the Sages have at long last returned their interest to this place, and the time has come to reopen the library..." He swivels in the direction of Saruna, and points a condemning finger at her. "...and to finally dispose of *that* ragged, riddling, unfaithful, UNGRATEFUL thing over there!"

Saruna, on the other hand, visibly slumps at the news of your affiliations - nonetheless, her posture is otherwise less guarded than it was toward you. She addresses you in turn:

Ancient Osirian:
"Saruna now speaks, despite having long since died. A tale of blood and gems these walls would tell. The Sage asked for commitment of heart and soul; he left cold stone and a ragged hole. Which would be the greater crime: To seek to escape one's binding word, or to be bound to a word first given in false understanding? Long have I served Knowledge, and never did I ask for this," She places her paw over a deep hole where her heart ought to be; barely visible within is a purple glimmer. "But such is my fate, and I am inclined neither to deny it by my own paw..." She looks over at Badru, then back at you. "...nor to leave claws sheathed should others presume to do so for me. I now wish only two things: Firstly, that all that I have come to know, remain known, come what may. Secondly, I would make a student of my teacher, and have revenge against he who stole my heart."

Elemental features, significant DR overcome by enchanted weapons, immunity to electricity, comparatively hefty SR, and...

Wind Defense (Ex): The churning winds of a mihstu’s body automatically deflect nonmagical projectiles (such as arrows, bolts, and sling stones). All other ranged weapons (including magical projectiles and thrown weapons) have a 20% miss chance. Weapons of significant size, such as giant-thrown boulders, siege engine projectiles, and other massive ranged weapons are not affected by this ability.

"Perhaps,Kramac. I'll attempt," Etu says softly before turning back to the odd pair. Whether or not they speak Common, she'll speak in Ancient Osiriani and let Montgomery translate her words.

"I cannot say that we can dispose of her, Badru, as we have very explicit instructions on living things as they are for when the Sages return," she explains softly. Etu then turns to Saruna. "The Sages will delight in the knowledge that you will pass on, I'm very sure of this. But I'm afraid I don't understand; have you been here all this time as a prisoner? I believe we need more details. Surely with the two of you working with us in tandem, we can find a solution satisfactory to all?"

Looking to Saruna, Montgomery attempts to back up Etu, "You say you desire vengeance against your former master, however it is likely that the Jeweled Sage you speak of is dead already. The Sages were hunted to near extinction thousands of years ago and the organization is only newly revitalized by the efforts of the Sapphire Sage, Amenopheus and recently the Diamond Sage, Tahonikepsu who now leads the modern incarnation of the Sages. You say you desire that your knowledge live on, some among the rank of the Scarab Sages may one day ascend to the rank of Jeweled Sage and the Sage Jewels preserve the knowledge of all of the former holders. I myself am close to achieving this vaunted status after my years of service. Perhaps if you join the ranks of the Scarab Sages you too could earn the right to be a Jeweled Sage, such an occurrence would insure your knowledge all you have come to know continues on past you, potentially forever."

Montgomery is honestly sympathetic to Saruna and incredibly wary of whatever Sage she speaks of. He is however not a killer and honestly feels that those who have committed crimes must be dealt with through the proper channels of justice, only resorting to vigilantism when no proper channels exist to achieve justice.

Badru ignores him (though not out of any readily-recognizable rudeness), but Saruna looks over at Kramac momentarily before turning to Etu and Montgomery, whom she addresses this time in the language Montgomery first attempted to engage her with.

Sphinx:
"As a pane of shining glass, I can understand your uncouth companion, but speak to him not."

Meanwhile, Badru looks at Saruna with what might be annoyance.

Etu Free-As-Wind wrote:

At the mention of 'living things', Badru simply stares at Etu, then at Saruna, who returns his stare. After a moment that seems much longer than it actually is, both of them break out into a short bout of dry, unnatural chuckling.

Sphinx:
"Long ago, I sought knowledge alongside the Jeweled Sages; a lion guarding the library, just as they were. Of that pride of equals, one stood above the rest in my eyes: He whose stone was the color of a winter's sunset - and just as cold. The time spent in that sunset was the halcyon of my days. That was before another sun rose upon the horizon: A red, rosy sun of truth and redemption...under which marched armies bearing, for us, nothing but destruction and erasure. When they came for our knowledge, I stood with the others. My teacher bid me guard this sanctum while he sought out its deeper secrets, that he might discover one that would preserve us and deliver our treasures - or ought it to have been 'deliver us and preserve our treasures'? The barge of Thoth came and went above me many times before at last it returned with my teacher, who claimed he had found the secret of our salvation, and asked my aid. I accepted. I accepted because I did not know the price..."

She pauses, and reaches up to a dark, ragged hole in her bandaged chest. She pulls more of the wrappings aside, and those who peer closely see, inside her chest cavity, a fist-sized amethyst.

Sphinx:
"...The living heart of a sphinx."

I'm going to need to consult the other Jeweled Sages again before going any further...TO BE CONTINUED

Not entirely sure where you're getting this; as far as creature type goes, you've established that Saruna's an Undead version of what would normally be a Magical Beast, and Badru's an unusual sort of Construct.

Eladrian sits off to the side, watching the play of words back and forth between the two creatures and the Pathfinders. Finally, he joins in on the discussion through a translator.
"I too think that it seems you two are but two sides of the same coin. You desire to increase your knowledge as well as share what you know. We would be glad to assist in this, and once we are sure that no further danger lies ahead, there will be many scholars wishing to come here to learn at your feet."

Turning towards the sphinx, he continues. "And I too know your thirst for righting a personal injustice and seeking to redeem false pledges. You say that your former teacher went deeper into this place and then returned asking for your heart. Where did he go once you agreed?"

She is clearly the victim of some kind of abuse from the Jeweled Sage she once named as master. That said, Badru sounds like he at least he believes he knows how to help us complete our mission here, so I am willing to work with the group if the majority feels he is the right choice to support.
