Re "mostlymyfault": Been there done that. SO many times. Most recently our party in another game was being pummeled by a pack of baddies in the wilderness. Things were getting desperate, so my Psion Generalist lays down a Concussive Onslaught -- 3d6 per round for seven rounds over the entire battlefield (30' radius area effect power) -- metamagicked with Malleable Power to carve out a 5' exception where each of her allies were standing.
The player (guiltily raising hand) had brilliantly reasoned that this would either force the enemy to flee (or at least retreat out of the area of affect and be limited to ranged attacks, which they didn't seem to have) or be pummeled to death if they chose to stand their ground and continue the fight.
What aforementioned player failed to consider was that said "brilliant" move also trapped every member of the party where they stood lest they be subjected to the same damage. Which eliminated retreat as an option for us, and we had to stand there and continue to fight.
We won in the end, but it wasn't exactly... pleasant.
Bottom line? Dodo occurs. Blame the dice, file it away for next time, and keep on keepin' on! :o)
In my experience, it's never the dull boring fights you remember. It's always the fights where you snatched victory from the jaws (or even throat) of defeat or where someone did something so awesome that even the defeat is talked about.
I know it was a good strategy, just didn't work out right :P That was more a semi-in-character attempt to rally val. Thanks for encouragement though!
One lesson I will always remember from PFS: don't stand next to your own aqueous orb with the falchion-wielding orc inside! Ow. Luckily the oracle saved me with a breath of life scroll, but got himself killed in the process! Had to help him rez him after that :)
SO, my hard drive decided to crap out on me this weekend. Terrible timing, what with 5 projects due this week X( ugh.

Eliah, having had more than my share of bad experiences with paladins (and don't get me started on hellknights in particular), I have to say Max has been a breath of fresh air to date. You might even find him likable.
