As he's not currently needed at the ops station, Benjamin works to put together teams of scientists to dispatch to the surface of both worlds - xenoarchaeologists, of course, but also geologists to help understand the damage both worlds have suffered from stellar bombardment, and the standard complement of biologists and botanists to study the remnants of the planet's flora and fauna.

Gareb finds that the surface and atmosphere of each planet contain heavy concentrations of heavy metals, iridium and osmium in particular. This is likely a result of the bombardment. The work on the surface of the planets will have to be done the old fashioned way, with boots on the ground.

You are within transporter range of the surface of both planets. There are a few artificial satellites above each planet that you could explore with a shuttle or runabout.

This is maybe a little open ended for PbP, so here are some ideas for what sort of missions you could get into.

Gareb generated a Momentum there, so you can spend that to ask an additional question.

Characters wishing to do research on the surface of the planets are required to attempt an Insight or Reason + Science Task with a Difficulty of 1, with applicable focuses of Archeology or Anthropology.

Characters studying the life-forms and ecology of the planets attempt an Insight or Reason + Science Task with the Focuses of Biology, Ecology, or Climatology.

Characters studying the satellites should attempt a Difficulty 1 Control or Daring+Conn check to pilot the craft and a Difficulty 2 Insight or Reason +Science Task to study the satellites. Depending on the nature of the satellites, Reason+Engineering might also be useful.

You guys can form 1 or multiple away missions, filling them out with supporting characters if you want or we can just run them as parallel scenes. This is intended to be a situation to really get into some Star Trek RP.

Kestra pilots the Actium to study the satellites with Astronavigation or Helm operations DC 16 2d20 ⇒ (2, 17) = 19 nets her two successes.

"With the atmosphere as it is I'll need to go down onto the surfaces for research. There might be some survivors but perhaps not. I can be of aid with the satelites but I'd like to get a close up look on the ground."

[ooc]Perhaps two teams though sticking together could work too.

Splitting the party is a fine thing. The game builds in something called Suporting Characters, a chance to play a different character in a scene when yours is elsewhere. We could do that, though no one has been up for it, yet. We could also just run two concurrent missions, one on a planet, one in a shuttle. There will be several additional away teams offscreen, not just the missions you are leading/participating in. This isn't intended to be a drive by survey, but a more extensive exploration.

Benjamin nods to Gareb as he reads through reports sent back to him by the science teams on HIP Alpha, creating briefs to send to the captain to summarize their findings.

I'd like to use my Project Management Focus to basically synthesize the data coming back from my half of the science teams to create something to send to the captain/Starfleet. I'm guessing Science would be correct Discipline, but I'm unsure of the Attribute. Insight, maybe?

Captain's Orders (Based on what I think you are all saying): "Mr. Takezo, you will coordinate the away teams on the larger of the planets, Jok'kem, the smaller. Take Mr. th'Chiaquis with you. Assemble your teams and report to the transporter room. Kestra, you will pilot the Actium. Take T'Karra and investigate the artificial satellites. Your piloting skill and T'Karra's knowledge of alien technology should be all that you need."

I hope we can take this opportunity to really lean into the roleplaying. What is normal for these people? Without any conflict, how do you behave?

Takezo, feel free to throw out an NPC scientist or two if you like. Or I can fill in a team if you like.

"Aye, sir," Benjamin replies to the captain, already halfway through assembling his teams to investigate HIB Alpha. When the blue lights clear and Away Team Alpha arrive on the surface, he looks around the planet's desolation. "Such destruction," he says as he takes in the remnants of a bygone culture. "This is what we narrowly avoided in the early 21st Century, snuffing ourselves out with nuclear fire before learning our place in the galaxy. Let's see how close these people came to escaping their rock, team. Mr. J'dune, begin your geological survey. Mr. chim Tokkis, start running sensor sweeps on any biological remnants. I doubt we'll find anything multicellular, but life is often doggedly determined to pass on DNA, so we might get lucky. Mr. Terwil, there was a group of buildings a half kilometer away, I suggest you start your xenoarchaeological explorations there. Mr. Rigus, you're with me - we're going to investigate several of the impact craters for meteoric remains and see what we can determine about the makeup - whether they were natural or synthetic, material composition, etc. I would like reports back every half hour, unless you find something remarkable. I think it is three teams. One for each planet and one for the satellites.

This seems like an excellent use of Project Management. A sprawling examination of two planets is definitely a project. So the 4 generates 2 Successes.

I'm curious to see T'Karra try to unpack some of what she is with Kestra. If you need any help, just let me know.

As Takezo processes all of the data coming in from multiple away teams, a few things become clear:

A success shows the two worlds had two totally different sentient species inhabiting them. The smaller world clearly had a larger population as there are many more surviving structures in small groups similar to small cities.

T'karra and Kestra run scans of several artifiicial and even a few natural satellites.

In space, overall, the characters will be able to discover that the more advanced species had developed forms of space travel with fusion powered impulse drives like those used in the Federation, but no artificial gravity and no faster than light drive systems. You do detect several onboard computer systems that are inoperative. You could possibly access one of the satellites and see if its computer core has useful information.

HIP B: The larger of the planets.

Gareb finds that HIP B is about 20% land mass and 80% water. Technology here is concentrated in 6 main areas, and it appears to be the same tech that is being discovered on the HIP A. The most advanced species on the planet was radially semetrical and somewhat squidlike, at least, a sort of cephalopod with a conical head and arms that it could use for locomotion and manipulation. It seems unlikely that its arms were dexterous enough to develop the advanced technology you see here. It is also noticeable that almost all of the technology on the planet in these 6 main areas, all on land, but the creatures were clearly amphibious. They called themselves simply Us.

Gareb and Jok'kem explore a ruined complex on the largest island of a long archipelago. The skies are grey and full of fallout from the bombardment.

The wreckage is extensive and devastating. Badly damaged and weathered buildings dot the landscape, and evidence of massive tidal waves, dried sediment and long dead plant matter, cover many open areas.

There is evidence of a variety of power systems, most of them destroyed. Broken solar arrays, radioisotope thermoelectric arrays still decaying, but blasting their surroundings with radiation.

Surprisingly, there is an active fusion reactor only 100 meters away. It appears to be safe and undamaged.

Some fun information about the ships called Reliant. As clarification, we take everything on Memory Alpha to be canon for this campaign just as it is canon for the series. But Memory Beta can be useful for fleshing out details as it includes all of the novels, comics, games, etc.

Kestra is flying the Actium. It is a satellite not a ship, I was picturing a satellite and then you would have to open the panel and unbolt the core from it and then bring it back. Sure, Tkarra can be transported next to the satellite. I do not see why the pilot would go.

Yes, I mistyped that, I apologize. Tired after too much family time and loud noises today. Kestra brings the Actium within a few meters of the satellite.

I see that I have miscommunicated. When I said satellites, I meant in the literal sense that they orbit the planet. This particular satellite is slightly larger than current International Space Station. Large enough to be worthy of exploring. Not big to you in the 24th Century, but large for a satellite at their technology level.
