Spooky's Carrion Crown

This is Ariarh Kane's submission: Ileana is a Changeling Possessed Oracle with the Tongues Curse and Bones Mystery. Stats and backstory are on the profile. I just have to add a description/picture and personality to the profile (that will be done by day's end) and then she is complete (unless any blatant errors are apparent and need to be corrected). Thank you for your consideration, Spooky GM.

Alrighty, Merick should be good to go, now.

And here's my second submission!

Fluff:
"If you shut up and listen to me, we might actually get to live through the night."

There are things in the cosmos that man was not meant to know about - and few understand that better than Valissa, one of Ustalav's extremely rare aasimar births. However, she's not a shining beacon of goodness and light - at best, she's got a very dirty gleam, since she thinks absolutely nothing of doing whatever is necessary to protect people from the horrors that go bump in the night. To that end, she's researched all kinds of strange and exotic creatures, and often knows enough to advise others on dealing with them.

What most people don't realize is that in her unceasing efforts to thwart the forces of darkness, she's somehow managed to acquire the powers of something even worse than many of the horrors of Ustalav - Valissa is a rare type of Summoner known as a Void Caller, gifted with the power to call and control creatures from the Dark Tapestry. Her response to horror isn't to cower and fear and hope it goes away - instead, she simply strives to call out something even worse than the monsters she fights, and she's managed to do this without losing sight of her ultimate goal.

Those who know her well wouldn't say that Valissa is a truly "good" person. Her methods are occasionally too extreme for that, even if she is ultimately trying to help people keep their peace of mind. She's also been known to be sharp-tongued and independent-minded, and she has no real respect for any authority that she sees as part of the problem (or failing to solve the problems). However, she does have her kinder side - Valissa does what she believes is necessary, but always with the greater good in mind, and she's never unkind simply because she can be.

Other Stuff:
In general, Valissa is a much tougher person than Sana - she's the kind of character who would call up eldritch monsters to terrify a town (without hurting anyone), then work together with her friends to "slay" the horrible creature and inspire the rest of the town to take up arms and learn to defend itself properly. She wouldn't even feel guilty about taking money for it, seeing it as an acceptable trade-off for completing the illusion of being mercenaries.

The key point in her behavior is that she'd be doing it to help the town, not for personal gain. She has little patience for foolish farmer NPCs, and her idea of Diplomacy is describing - in detail - what will happen if the horrors of the night catch someone and they haven't done exactly as she's advised.

Very different feel from Sana, but fun to play in her own way, sort of a "Your problems are getting solved whether you like it or not" thing. Incidentally, I haven't posted the Eidolon's stats, but it's a Small Size quadruped with a bunch of Skilled evolutions. Not good at combat, but excellent as a sneaky scout.

@Maia: Your profile could use a little tidying up, it's kind of messy to read the giant opening paragraph and your sheet.

Okay, first roll call time. The following categories are just to sort everyone out by general roles, for party balance, and only characters with both backstories and character sheets finished are added to the list.

Arcane:
-Dr. Stefan Von Herzog, Human Wizard (Necromancer)
-Maia Silndra Rose, Aasimar Wizard
-Valissa, Aasimar Summoner (Master Summoner, Void Caller)

Divine:
-Ileana Cercel, Changeling Oracle (Possessed)
-Sana, Aasimar Oracle of Yog-Sothoth (Dual-Cursed)

Martial:
-Merick Renarin, Human Warpriest of Pharasma

Skill:
-Spugnoir, Half-Orc Vivisectionist.
-A few Inquisitors in the pipeline.

While of course a GM is supposed to be somewhat impartial, I will say that in the Skill role, Inquisitors and Bards would definitely shine and potentially one of each would prove useful. Just something to think about.

I put up Spugnoir, Vivisectionist alchemist.

Oh, whoops, missed that. Ammending list.

And now I'm suddenly having visions of a Bard playing a cheerful, upbeat tune as a swarm of eldritch monsters descends upon the forces of evil... XD

here ya go, spoiloered it all.

Would you allow the bolt ace archetype from thee ACG for gunslinger? It uses crossbows in place of firearms.
Debating between that and an investigator.

@Spooky GM: Ileana is finalised now (all details are on her profile). :)

@mcridill: As my opposition to Gunslinger is more in the guns themselves, I will allow Bolt Ace.

I would like to put this character in for consideration. It has been used in a very brief Carrion Crown campaign before (to which also Maia belonged), which has come to halt on the very next in-world day after our arrival in Ravengro.

The character was created for a different campaign but should be according to your rules. (I just noticed I already dropped her to point buy 20 from originally point 25, so no adjustment necessary.)

CG female sylph cleric of Calistira

The name of the main account is Feuerrabe.

Narah!

*curtsey*

Hello, fair maiden of the elvenfolk.
And hello, Val, handsome devil in a black dress.

(Val is Maia's raven familiar, in case anyone wonders. He speaks elven.)

I think I may retool this character to apply for the campaign. Shouldn't take a lot of effort, and I think she might fit fairly well. It'll be this afternoon probably before I have the time though.

Here's Evan Goodridge, Cleric of Shelyn for your consideration. The idea is nothing bad has ever really happened to Evan, till today, and his world will be turned upside down in true horror film style. To avoid stepping on toes I decided to focus on him being lucky instead of being Harrowed.

Evan Goodridge:

Background
They say that when each child is born, the gods flip a coin and wager on the outcome. If the coin comes up heads, the child's life goes one way. If it comes up tails, the life goes the other way. Evan's coin landed on it's edge, and stayed there.

Despite a humble beginnings, the fates have smiled on Evan. He never got sick and he was the sort to make fast friends wherever he went. Although his family traveled often, good fortune was Evan's constant companion. Where others may find a the occasional discarded copper drab, Evan would find a golden crown.
And when it came to games of dice and chance, well people often thought Evan was cheating but they could never say how. By the time Evan was a teenager, his father had become a successful wool merchant and a patron of the arts. Evan grew up sheltered from the world, surrounded by bards who did their best to put dreams in the young mans head. Joining the Temple of Dena seemed an auspicious way to give thanks for gifts of luck and plenty. Evan found his temperament to be well suited to the teachings of Desna, and he happily extols the virtues of her teachings to all and sundry.

Purely by chance Evan met Professor Lorrimor, while traveling with his family. He had the misfortune to bump into the distracted professor when leaving a shop in a hurry (he was going to be late to evening worship). The Professor would have been angry, except that several large roof slates fell where he stood not a moment before. Lorrimor hugged the bemused young man and thanked him profusely for saving his life.

Description
Evan is a handsome young man about 6ft tall, with deep blue eyes and pale skin. He has blond hair, cropped short in a fashionable style. He is armed with a simple Glaive, and a ready smile, the weapons favored by Shelyn.

Personality
Evan is warm, open and perhaps overly trusting. After all he's got no enemies, the world is his oyster and well what could possibly go wrong? Later on if Evan survives, he'll find hidden depths and rise to become a grizzled monster hunter.

Party Roll
Buffs, Divine Magic (likely super important in this AP), extra damage through AOOs which may protect squishy wizards from martial creatures somewhat.

Note if there's a bard in the group I'd drop evangelist and pickup a second domain, and maybe switch to Desna.

I'm withdrawing my inquisitor Kerk Jenkins and replacing him with Kith Jeoava. Teacher's pet and Bard.

Kith Jeova Backstory:

The good Professor spent a lot of time outside Ustalav visiting instituions of learning. I met him on one of these trips outside of that infamous region when he visited the Kitharodian Academy in Taldor , the bardic college that is my alma mater . He wished to have access to some of our older archives. The request, from such an eminent figure, was of course granted without hesitation and I was assigned to assist him in finding whatever he needed and for anything else he might require.

It is a testament to him, and not in any way a slight to the Kitharodian Academy, that those three weeks were by far the most fascinating and interesting ones I spent there. His depth of knowledge of Ustalav, its history, denizens, politics, geography... anything and everything really was astounding and his passion for the subject shone in his every word.

His trip was frutiful as he found the old tomes that he was looking, some obscure works on how Ustalav architecture changed during the time of the Whispering Tyrant, and we kept in contact through correspondence while I finished my studies. I must say that his passion for the region rubbed off on me a bit and my studies and training after I met him have taken on a much more Ustalavian flavour. News of his death arrived just before my convocation which , needless to say, put quite the damper on my happy day.

I have resolved to pay my respects to travel to Ustalav to pay my respects to him. It would be wonderful to see the region that he was so passionate about as well. I've assured my friends that I'll be back from Ravengro within two months. I'll also leave to his estate the old tome that I dug up in my own research which I wished to gift to the Professor when I had the chance. It's an ancient work purpoting to be the true version of Whispers of the Immortal that truly recounts how the Whispering Tyrant rose to his power. I must admit though that his comments on the monsters and such of the region never quite sat well with me. It just seemed like hyperbole and exaggeration from an otherwise excellent and grounded researcher and academic. There is no way the place could be nearly as horrifying as he said.... could it? I'm starting to have some very disturbing dreams though as I get closer to Ravengro. Visions of writhing dead flesh come to life. Rotted teeth feasting on marrow from broken bones... I'm sure it's just my imagination.

I've put in a minor hooks with an ancient tome on the Whispering Tyrant that he found and wanted to gift to Professor Lorrimor giving him odd dreams. Also he's a Taldoran (Taldor started the Shining Crusade which bound the Whispering Tyrant) who worships Aroden (The Dead God who originally killed The Whispering Tyrant). Don't know if those qualify as hooks but I thought they were nice touches.

Been trying to think of a good hook for this. I have a few ideas. I've always wanted to do a paladin, I might submit one since you seem short on martials. That seems naturally to fall into the tough-guy monster hunter rather than a vulnerable character that might have a more interesting story.

Do paladins need a specific deity? Would probably be Desna or Chadira Zazuristan (however you spell it) if it matters.

Yeah there seems to be an awful lot of casters, I was half wondering about submitting a Paladins or a Barbarian myself.

BTW Densa as CG seems an unlikely paladin patron.

Wolfwaker wrote:

The entry in the core rule book does not necessarily suggest that paladins revere a specific deity. Paladins adhere to a code and principles of righteousness and so forth... In fact it doesn't speak of religion at all. Some GMs might consider it implied in their ability to cast divine spells, however.

The likeliest choice for a paladin in general of the gods mentioned in the Core Rulebook (if only a brief list, they are not described there) is Iomedae. LG "goddess of valor, rulership, justice and honor and coincentally the youngest goddess in the pantheon.

Then there is Torag, a dwarven deity of forge, protection and strategy. Most likely choice if your character was a dwarf, I suppose.

Iori (LN) is extremely popular with the Vudrani people and very often revered by monks... though one might argue that paladins might strive for self perfection on some level as well.

I think the most obvious choice for a paladin in this particular campaign is Sarenrae, however. The true good goddess of the the sun, redemption, honesty and healing. Fierce enemy of all undead.

Apart from gods, there is always the Empyreal Lords, however. They are not strictly gods, but the most powerful of the celestials. In some ways it seems more fitting than actual gods, since they are servants to the gods themselves and the commanders of the armies of heaven (and Elysium, Nirvana and so forth...) Whereas gods are more concerned with their own matters at times, Empyreal Lords fight evil.

For a female character Falayna might be a good choice. (As a matter I did create a paladin of Falayna specifically for a Carrion Crown campaign, but chose to apply with a different character.)

Ragathiel might also be worth a look at...

Well, there are a couple more Empyreal Lords who have paladins listed as typcial followers, but that would lead to far now.

Again, unless the DM asks it, you don't strictly have to be a paladin of a particular god.

I am not sure who you meant with Chadira Zazuristan, but if it's Caydan Ceilean, that's a highly unlikely choice (which is of course just my opinion, an each to their own). Caydan Cailean is the drunken god, good, but undisciplined and constantly loaded. He is of course an outstanding adventurer... but it's rumored that the reason he rose to godhood was to... <euphemism>win the heart</euphemism> of Calistria, the goddess of lust, trickery and revenge, whose temples are in many ways brothels. Not sure whether he did. (Yes, I realize that Narah is a cleric of that exact goddess, but then she doesn't claim to be a paladin in any way and would highly amused if anyone called her virtuous. She wouldn't laugh out loud, of course, just smile a mysterious smile.)

Desna isn't really a bad choice, but she's a chaotic deity as well, while all paladins must be lawful.

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8

Chaldira Zuzaristan is a minor halfling deity, alignment NG, known for luck and impetuosity.

The best thing about her is the religion trait that lets you reroll a failed save once a day.

I see, my mistake.

Have you considered worldly orders, such as the Eagle Knights?

Pharasma seems like a great fit for Carrion Crown though I see no reason why Desna wouldn't be a very interesting choice as well.

Grand Lodge

I'm having a difficult time coming up with a background so I'll withdraw my submission.

Really interesting. I'll have something up by tomorrow.

@Wolfwalker: By the rules, Paladins don't need to specify a deity, and unlike Clerics, deciding to champion a general idea is not the weird exception and doesn't require a GM's aid to get running. You could easily make a Paladin whose quest is monster/undead-focused and eschew any specific religiosity. Narah's suggstions for a possible deity are solid and have a few on-theme ones, but there's nothing wrong with going general. Being a holy warrior still has "holy" in there though, so consider a character who at least acknowledges which deities his mission is in line with. I'm flexible fluff-wise on top of that, so go about it however you'd like and it should be fine.

Dotting for interest. Would consider a Shaman of some sort probably, although I have not had the time to really read through the thread to see what others are proposing.

Also dotting -- got a few ideas rolling around (my last Carrion Crown orphan was repurposed, so I have to start again..)

Gonna go ahead and withdraw from this here awesome campaign. I got accepted into another game, and I don't want to spread myself too thin.

Best of luck to everyone else though, as I know you guys're gonna have an awesome campaign on your hands! :D

Sucks to hear, but have fun with the other game.

For everyone else, one kind of semi-requirement: be well-behaved and don't read spoilers meant for everyone else. I'm adding a lot of spooky additional material to the first book (which will hopefully keep things on edge even for those who've been through it), and a fair bit of it will be targeted to someone specific. So don't go peeking at what everyone else is experiencing and take in only your character's version of reality.

This is the submission for shrodingerscat...i changed 2 skills (craft weapon to craft armor and got survival instead of ride). If anything else doesn't look right, please let me know and I'll fix.

Crunch, backstory and appearance can be found in the profile page.

Thanks.

Got this character for CC, if you want to get a look

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8

OK, going to submit a paladin. I like to have the characters follow a specific deity--it helps flesh out the character. Still trying to decide on the race. The Sacred Shield is pretty neat (instead of smite evil, he halves damage to allies within 10' from his "target" and he gets +Cha to AC) but it gives up channeling, so that choice might depend on the party composition (if there was anyone else who could channel energy).

Channeling is kind of meh on a paladin unless you're a sacred servant or hospitilar (and then only for healing). Smite is awesome however :)

Silver Crusade

I will be submiting a cleric of Sarenrea in a bit, so there is that.

So, completely overhauled the alias and made Fauniel's alias into this one. I submit Zahur al'Rani, a hungry ghost monk with an oath of vengeance against the vampire who destroyed his village and took his sister.

This would be my first monk ever and thought the concept was wuite fun once I came up with it.

Was learning toward a medium-archetype Witch, but then had the idea of a haunted Bloodrager (thinking crossblooded undead and infernal - the taint of an infernal pact lich in the bloodline).

Figured both would fit right in thematically.

Ironically I don't think Witches do very well against occultish enemies. Most of their potent abilities mess with living people.

@Spooky can you please share some feedback with us, so we can better tune our submissions?

Thanks!

Orannis here!

This profile has all of Maryska's crunch on it. Fleshing out her backstory is going to take more work, but what I've put up there is the meat of it and now you can know how she'll contribute to the party mechanically when you're picking your submissions.

I'm pretty fond of her, so I hope she has your eye!

Oh, I did have one question about a "custom" item.

Maryska would certainly carry a bludgeoning weapon for the sake of dealing with skeletal undead and the like. A light mace doesn't fit her aesthetic at *all* for me though.

I was wondering how you'd feel about her having a telescoping metal baton? It would function exactly the same as a light mace for all intents and purposes (1d6 bludgeoning, threat on a 20, x2 on a crit, etc.), though if you felt inclined to let me have fun with it we could say it gives like, a +2 on Sleight of Hand checks to conceal. My real concern, however, is the "look".

@FangDragon: Unless somebody is doing something particularly wrong, I don't really chime in on backstory matters. My silence and being added to the roll call sheet is my ersatz thumbs-up. And channeling usually isn't too good on Paladins, but in an undead-heavy campaign that may change a little.

@Maryska: Considering a club can pretty much be "a thick piece of scrap wood" (hence its cost of zero), we could definitely say it's a metal club. Maybe make it mechanically and cost-wise up the alley of a sword cane?

Arcane:
-Dr. Stefan Von Herzog, Human Wizard (Necromancer)

XD A Bard, an Inquisitor, a Summoner, and a martial type (Bloodrager?) might provide a surprisingly good balance for a horror campaign...

Here is a character that was created for a CC campaign that got dropped due to other player's inactivity very early in the game. Would love to get him back into this AP. Thanks for your consideration.

Given that posting has slowed considerably, I'm considering closing recruitment early; potentially tomorrow at around 6 or 7 EST. If you haven't finished yet and need more time, please say so; I'm fine extending things to Sunday if someone needs it to finish their character. Otherwise...

Silver Crusade

I was going to submit a second character, I would ask to extend it to at least about 12AM Saturday night.

(I'm planning on lurking during this PBP -- I'm new to PBP, just joined my first, and want to broaden my gaming via PBP experience.)

I'm working on my inquisitor right now, I hope to be done today.

Here's Feth's submission. She's a gnome empiricist investigator (I don't know why I put inquisitor instead of investigator before)
