Victor "Vic" Lofliss
Vic slowly approaches Jack.
Here allow me.
He unrolls a weathered leather case that display small pockets with multiple finely crafted tools. He selects a small saw and sets to work disabling the trapped chest.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 4 = 24
Jack Speed-Runner
assuming victor didn't disable it, I assist
sleight of hand: 5 + 2 + 1d20 ⇒ 5 + 2 + (9) = 16 I assume 5 is your sleight of hand number, and 4 is your thieves tools number as you have double proficiency with that?
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
This would be a straight dex check, not a sleight of hand check, but its good enough either way
Vic can spot the trap on a closer inspection. The snow is holding up the heavy chest on two piles of stones. It the chests weight shifts( from being opened, moved or the like) or the snow was removed, causing it to slide forward it would trigger. The rope could be detached and with some help from the stronger folks, held, as Vic reties it to the tree, removing any chance of it being triggered.
Once that is done the chest is safe to open and inside seems to be piled with stolen gear, you would guess came from the dead and stripped guards. You find five sets of leather armor, three sets of studded leather armor, a well made chain shirt, two light wooden shields, seven longswords, two handaxes, a dagger, and three light crossbows with a total of 25 bolts.
Tursk Krune
Tursk frowns at the sight of all the gear.
"The thought that these guards were taken down so easily is beginning to unnerve me. We need to be prepared. All of you, go through the leathers, I beg, and if you can move about in the heavier weight, take it and feel no shame in donning another's armor. We have no time for shame. Only survival for ourselves and home matters now. The same goes for their weapons."
Anyone wearing light armor should grab a studded leather. Funnily enough, the chain shirt is a medium armor in 5E.
Barl “the Boulder” Skein
"Here lemme grab that for you!" Barl imagines that everyone is looking on with admiration at his great strength while he lifts the chest so that Vic and Jack can undo the trap.
Seeing the chain shirt, Barls eyes widen. Anyone mind if I take this? My hide armors have gotten a little ehh.. ripe. Keep forgetting to wash them." Anyone that has been within a few feet of The Boulder within the past couple of days know this to be true.
"I'll take the hand axes too if there is no objection!" Barl pick one up and attempts to shave the hair from his face to test the edge. An action completely wasted since he is freshly shaven.
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
A few of you gathered some of the gear from the chest, but most of it remains left behind in the cold. Most of you are bundled up to the ever increasing winter weather, Barl and kat are well under-dressed for such weather, yet seem fine with it. You push onward thought the boarder forest and the snow grows deeper, and it falls from the sky as if the dead of winter.
You follow the path to were a windswept gully carves a path though the snow covered trees. You slush though the snow that is halfway to some of your knees. The wind howls and its frozen breath bites at any exposed flesh upon your face. As you make your way though a soft cascade of snow falls from an overhead branch,it hisses softly as it hits the ground and then a thing is among you.
A white scales snake-like thing with an over-sized head and a greenish gas exhaling from its very toothed an wide open mouth falls upon Barl

Eldritch Blast: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 61d10 ⇒ 8

Vic slips in nimbly and attempts to stab the snake-like creature with his rapier.

dmg: 1d8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 3 + (1) = 12 as he tries to stab with this rapier. that is a good hit too, low sneak attack dmg, but still max on the d8 there.
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
Round in in progress
Barl swings Ulga down, connecting with the vile Snake thing as Kat tries to connect with a blue bolt, but the snake thing twists out of the way and she only manages to remove bark from a distant tree. Vic tries to land a blow but the thing dances out of the way, right into Jacks blade and he digs into the snake thing.
The Snake-thing turns on jack, dropping him, Helen keeping back fires off a bolt, but like Kat before her she just ends up burning some trees.
A Nature check will work here, not an Arcane check. Even with a base Int check, Kat or anyone else will note its coloration and the fact you have never heard the hunters speak of it to know this is not native to the Boarder forest.

Round 1
Tursk wastes no time as he immediately draws his mace and tries to smash the creature. But his aim is awkward and merely glances off it.
Mace: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Katarina "Kat"
Round 2
Kat fires off another bolt of energy at the beast... or rather, at the same tree she hat hit moments before, sending bark and pieces of branches flying into the air.
She stares morosely at the carnage done to the tree for a second. Why can I not control this? What good is magic if it does what it wants instead of what I tell it?!?
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 61d10 ⇒ 6
Seriously? 2 1s in a row? :P
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
Tursk draws and swings his mace, but does little more than scatter snow as the Snake things curls and slithers away. Olybrius joins in and slashes away with his sword but catches nothing but air.
round 2
Barl gets in another solid hit as Kat and Helen both fire off bolts. Kats once more kills a small tree as Helen roasts the snake-thing , already hurt by Bars hit. What is left in the melting snow is a burned and very dead, snake- like thing. Jake meanwhile lays unmoving in the snow.
The snake thing is dead and Jack has one failed save.

Tursk Krune
Tursk observes Helen skillfully stabilize Jack.
"Well done." He then closes his eyes and chants to Old Dead Eye for his healing warmth to embrace Jack.
A 10 stabilized Jack.
Cure Wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Hmm. Not much. But at least Jack is back on his feet.
Helen Gardamum
Helen gives a slight start at the sudden magical healing. "Oh! Well, that does certainly seem more helpful than anything I've ever learned to do. Good work, Mr. Krune. Now then, should we press on, or do we need to rest here a bit?"
Dunno whether anyone needs a short rest to spend HD. If we do rest, I'll cast mage armor first and then get a spell slot back from the rest, but if not, I'm good with just pressing on.
Katarina "Kat"
"Yes, glad you're better! Trusk is good at that sort of thing, looks like. Whether wagons or people!" Kat smirks then pokes at the dead creature with a stick before tossing the stick aside and glancing at the others. "I'm ready too. Think we're gaining on them at all?"
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
With Jack back on his feet and no other threat in the area, you leave the burned corpse of the snake-thing behind. In time you climb back out of the ravine and are once more among flatter land in the forest. The trail is still easy to follow and the snow is growing deeper and the air even colder. Soon you are among the trees, but theses trees are not empty. Feathered bundles of strange fetishes hang from the lowest branches of the trees in this part of the forest, swaying in the shifting wind. All seem to be stuck trough with small pins, holding pieces of leather bound around them.
Tursk Krune
Tursk takes a moment to study the odd fetishes.
Intelligence: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Victor "Vic" Lofliss
Vic also approaches the fetishes to see if he can discern their origin or any reason why they may be here.
Intelligence: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
These are strange. Hey, Boulder or Helen, ever see anything like this in the North?
Keeper of Forbidden Lore
The fetishes you notice are not what you first thought. They are small frozen corpses of birds, pinned together by long , slender pins with tiny fletching along its notched rear. Near everyone gathered around the fetishes, Helen and Kat can tell they are the work of a very small folk, the only thing that makes sense is tiny fey of some type as nothing larger than a rabbit crafted "arrows" so tiny. That gathering is cu short by high pitched , child-like laughter echoing though the forest and a hail of tiny arrows falling upon you.
Both Helen and Kat are stuck by the tiny arrows, they feel the tiny chill of winters grasp as it pores into them. Barl is missed by the in like arrow as it buries itself into a tree near his left eye

Cast Thaumaturgy for small ground shakes.
"You dare profane this tree with your cruelty? This forest and all in it, belong to Old Deadeye, to Erastil. And you trespass in his domain? Murder its creatures, not for food, but for sport? And then you attack us? Here? You will leave this place now!"

Round 1
Tursk start by threatening to bring the wrath of Erastil down upon who ever is shooting at them, hi threats seems to have no effect. Kay now racked with cold she rarely has felt spots one of the small creatures, a tiny winged, blue skinned humanoid, flirting around the trees. Even shaking she hits the creature with her icy blast, but that does not seem to drop it. Vic gets a clear shot, but totally misses one of the tiny winged beings as it flies about the branches.
Helen does not have a good view at all but fires off a bolt into the trees, scorching some branches but none of the attacker. Jack draws his bow and fires at the attackers, but the things are darting in and out of the trees too fast. Olybrius, only has javelins but he throws one as best as he can at the darting forums. His attack at lest grazes one of the tiny forums.
This time, the tiny attackers seem to target Helen and Kat. Both are stung once and feel the icy burn once more.
Ok here is the layout. You are all pretty close to one another, the attackers are tiny winged humanoids darting back and forth though the branches of the trees. As these guys are flying in and out of the trees here is what we are going to do. If you make a DC 10 perception you get a clean shot at them. Otherwise they will get cover. If they try to hide, this will change but right now they are simply shooting at you all.
