Background:
Barl grew up in Asleifar, a whaling town in the Thanelands region of the Land of the Linorm Kings. His father, Asmund, a whale hunter, usually wasn’t around and his mother perished while giving birth to him. This left the task of raising young Barl to his older sister, Ingrid. She did what she could, but Barl was a handful. Barls ultra competitiveness and carefree attitude toward authority, kept him in constant trouble. His usual antics were, racing other kids across the roofs of neighborhood homes, seeing who could stay submerged longest in the frigid waters of the steaming sea or who could sneak on to a ship in the port and come back with a trinket.
It was this last bit that finally landed Barl in trouble that he couldn’t get out of. Late one night, the young Ulfen was dared to board the Galleon of a merchant from nearby Kalsgard. He actually made it as far as the captains quarters before been caught with a small brass looking glass. The merchant wasn’t quite as forgiving as many of the other ship owners had been when catching the neighborhood kids. See, the looking glass turned out to be magical, and very valuable. The trader demanded from Barls family a weregild, set at the outrageous price of 1000 gold pieces. Not only could Asmund not afford to pay the price, he was so fed up with his son at this point that he probably would have refused anyway. So Barl was to become a servant of the merchant until such a time that his debt was paid in service. Barl did what any honorable young man would do in his place. He tucked his tail between his legs, stole a horse and ran as far and as fast as it would take him.
In the years since, he has been working his way across Avistan, taking odd jobs, delivering packages, guarding caravans or whatever else he could manage. He’s made it all the way to Heldren in this manner, where he recently sold his stolen horse and has taken up a room in the Silver Stoat.
Personality: Barl gained “The Boulder” nick name as a young kid. He was always proud of it since he figured it was in reference to his great strength. Truthfully, it was “That Barl is as dense as a..” Barl has matured a bit since his days in Asleifar. However, though good natured, he remains carefree, boastful and over confident.
