Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Collaborate!

What classes or roles are needed/useful for this AP? I've never played it. I have looked at the Player guide.

Also, what are our starting criteria?

I know we are limited to Core rulebook classes (and presumably races), so that means Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Half Elves, Half Orcs, Halflings and Humans for races and Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer and Wizard.

I'd love to play an elven spell lobber (wizard preferred to sorcerer), but that might be too weak out of the gate. An alternative might be a bard.

How min/maxy do we want to go?

And what are our starting stats and cash? Almost all of the games on this board seem to be 20 point buy in, but is that a default or just a majority choice?

All that being said, if the party needs a half orc barabarian, that's what I'll play.

female human commoner 1

Most APs seem to be pretty careful to include something for everyone, and I think the Player's Guide is a free download, so that's where I'm starting. That doesn't really tell us much. Hm.

So I'm all for letting you play the half orc barbarian.
I figure you get dibs, since you posted first.

Depending on the needs of the party I will play...
A cleric of Sarenrae (race as yet unknown) for divine
An elf wizard (probably divination) for magic
A human rogue for skill
A human paladin for melee
A ranger for missles

Apparently, I'm after playing fairly standard classes as a novelty, but what does our GM say re: archetypes?

The story will come once I know what I'm playing.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

I have a Halfling Rogue I would like to play, made specificaly for RotRL. Solid background tying him to Varisia and Sandpoint.

I have played the AP before, but never made it very far. Like, a few encounters and that's it, each time the game has died, often due to the GM disappearing.

Dairkal has the Swashbuckler archetype from APG and an alternate race trait from the ARG. Neither are a must, but both really help the concept work, particularly the archetype.

Even if they aren't allowed, I would still like to play Dair, as I have grown rather fond of him, despite all the games he's been in dying out.

I'd rather not play the half orc. If I get dibs then it would be an elf wizard, lol. In order of preference, I'd rather play wizard> sorcerer > cleric > rogue > bard > ranger > druid > fighter > barbarian > monk.

Monkeygod wants to play a rogue. Nylissa, are yours listed in order of preference?

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Mousestalker: I don’t want to influence the way everyone wants to build their party, but I can answer your question about point buying:

point buying:
The point buy system helps you scale the power of your Character to the setting. For example, breaking a strong door (like your front door at home) is DC18, whether you are gaming in the real world (low fantasy) or on planet Barsoom (high fantasy). If you use 15 points, your character would probably have to kick this door several times before it bust open…just like a big police officer might in the real world. If you use 20 points though, it’s very likely your character will smash that door on the first try. So the point buy system helps you scale your character’s power to the game setting, either toward realism or kicka$$ness… whichever you are after!

Cash: let’s roll for it. If the result is less than the average, you may take the average. If the result is greater, you got lucky! And you should buy the first round of black ale’s at the Red Dragon Inn!
Let’s make archetypes allowed. I’m not familiar with them all but I’m a quick study. Whatever makes the game more fun:) I just might need to ask a question here or there about how the rules apply to certain archetype mechanics.
As for my two cents, it would be nice if your character’s backstories held out some hooks I could use to pull them into short side adventures that develop your characters. I think that’s fun. Old enemies? Heartbreaking romantic tragedies? Expelled from the tribe for believing it possible to tame dragons instead of kill them?
I’d also like to know if all the PCs know each other. Did you all arrive in SandPoint via the same ship voyage? Were they all captured from their various villages by the same slave-smuggler group and aided eachother in a harrowing escape?
Oh, and I almost forgot…
Monkeygod:
You will kill a dragon this time…or at least try!

YAY! Thanks for letting me in!!

I'm playing a rogue in another game so something else'd be good... Willing to fill any holes in the party. I'd like to see other's preferences since I have no real preference.

For the moment I see:

Monkeygod: Rogue
Mousetalker: Wizard
Nylissa: Any
Hymenopteryx (me): Any
Edward Sobel: Yet to join

So assuming the arcane and Skill slots are filled I'll probably go (in order of preference) with:

Ranger --> Druid --> Fighter --> Barbarian --> Cleric --> Monk

(Most likely human, ethnicity dependant on class)

For point-buy, since we've got 5 party members, maybe the 15 point-buy would be best?? (I like the more realistic sub-optimal end of things).

For background I always like to link backgrounds with as many others as possible... whether siblings, childhood friends, sweethearts or whatever.

If I go wizard, then elf is the logical race, which is great as elf is my favourite race. A very logical deity for an elf to follow is Desna. If memory serves, Desna has a bit of a following in Sandpoint, something about a festival? So a devout Desnan would be a bit of an itinerant and would be attracted to Sandpoint.

I adore plothooks and inter-character ties. Let's have lots of them!

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 8/Magus8(Kensai,)/Investigator8(Questioner)

So this is Dairkal. As I said, he's a Swashbuckler Rogue. The mechanics are nothing crazy.

A different DM wanted to know why he was a swashbuckler, which is pretty due to him being a daring, acrobatic performer. He didn't really think that was enough reason for him to be a bit more martial than a normal Rogue.

female human commoner 1

Looks like we have wizard and rogue covered. Allowing that Hymenopterix will play a ranger, I'm thinking pretty strongly about a cleric (I've moved to Desna for the moment) or a front line barbarian or fighter type.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Hymenopterix thinks 15 points is good, but looks like Dairkal is built with 25pts. Let's split the difference: 20 point buy. Dairkal, can you find a point or two to come down? That would allow our two casters enough int and spells per day that you all aren't sleeping in dungeons every few hours to recharge.

So just what i've heard so far...
Monkeygod: Swashbuckling Halfling Rogue
Mousetalker: Spell lobbing Elven Wizard
Nylissa: Cleric of Sarenrae the Dawnflower?
Hymenopteryx (me): probably Ranger
Edward Sobel: If no show when we are ready to start then we will sally forth with 4 players.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Nylissa, I mean Desna the Luckystar not Sarenrea... I posted before I saw you had updated:)

female human commoner 1

@ Owlbeard
Heh, don't count your chickens.
I'm working on Desna, but Sarenrae's not out of the running. Nor is Cayden. Or ... well ... this is why I never play clerics.
I'm also looking rather fondly at a fighter build at the moment. Nice, simple, whacking people with a sword...
It also depends on the ranger, whether its a melee or a shooter or both.

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 8/Magus8(Kensai,)/Investigator8(Questioner)

Owl,

Is my alternate race trait ok? Its Adaptable Luck in my Statistics section of my CS

I'd probably go with a switch hitter if we have 5 - otherwise I'll go with a strait fighter?

Here's my first thought => Tinuviel Surana, elf wizrd

Tinuviel is from Magnimar where her parents work as wizards for hire. They are unusual for elves in that they are not especially aloof. Tinuviel's mother is renowned in the magical community for her savvy business sense and ability to spot a commercial opportunity. Her father is also practical but is more skilled in spellcraft than commerce. They both travelled extensively earlier in life though they have mostly settled and stayed in Magnimar for the past decade, sending Tinuviel on the road in their stead.

From a very early age Tinuviel has borne the nickname 'Boo' with some stoicism. She never introduces herself as 'Boo' but somehow someone always shows up and addresses her as that. Then everyone stops calling her Tinuviel and uses her nickname instead. Tinuviel is tallish, slight with white hair, green eyes and clear milky skin that bespeaks decades of living inside. Like her parents she isn't especially aloof or stand offish.

Tinuviel arrived in Sandpoint a month ago. She was sent by her parents to see if there are any business opportunities. Tinuviel's non-magical aunt and uncle live in Sandpoint, so she has been staying with them. They are spinners, weavers and tailors. In short, they make and sell clothes.

Tinuviel is a devout Desnan and adores butterflies. She usually has a butterfly in the form of a hair clasp, broach, pin or design somewhere on her person, often more than one. She tries to stay as clean and tidy as traveling permits. She always smells of soap and sometimes flowers, though neither scent is ever especially strong.

female human commoner 1

I'm going to go with the cleric most likely to be snarked at by the optimization builders.

Unless Edward joins us desperate to play a cleric, and then I'll hop onto a fighter.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Dairkal, the alt race trait is fine since it's on your character sheet. It looks cool.

Hymenopterix/Nylissa, I sent a PM to Hedgeknight to see if he wanted to join as a melee character since Edward Sobel didn't show up. That might help you guys decide.

Tinuviel looks cool. Very Tolkeinish. Does she have a darker side at all? Is there any conflict in her background? Is she running away from a marriage arranged by her father or something?

I've got your first encounter ready to go, so looking forward to everyone rolling up their PCs.

Female Elf Wizard, 3, Per +4, Init +3, AC 13, Fort +2, Ref +4, Will +1 (Familiar: Raven) HP (18)21 (3/8 acid darts)

Tinuviel is a fairly upbeat young wizard, so she isn't especially dark. Bad things have been happening to her family for almost ten years now. It could be the sheerest of coincidence but Boo's family has been dying off in numbers over the past decade. Why that is, I couldn't say.

One elven wizard, ready and eager to go!

female elf cleric

(aka Nylissa)

After boogering around with builds and roles and blah blah blah, I came up with the min/maxers nightmare. An elven cleric of Desna.

We'll see how she does.

Now, to write a backstory.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Sandpoint Map Link and Map Key in the Campaign Info thread...From the AP. Read as much or little as you like, whatever makes the game more enjoyable.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Thanks for the invite, Owlbeard! I'll bring in a meat shield for the group. Will get to work on it and join up in a few.

Male Dwarf Fighter/2

Here is Thumparr Ironfist - Dwarven Fighter from the faraway Mindspin Mountains. Please take a look at him and make sure he is ready to go.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

HaHa...Awesome! Welcom Thumparr. We are doing 20 pt buy and looks like you are 25. Other than that, you are a game-maker. Thanks!

He started with a Con 13 and Wisdom 10 and Charisma 12 and with the adjustments for a Dwarf, he has his current stats. Which, I think, he is off by one. Check me to see if that is correct and I'll adjust.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Oops...you are right Thumparr. I got lazy and posted too quickly.

Which i'm doing again right now! Probably cause i'm excited for the game!

Anyway, that means Dairkal is fine the way he is too. No adjustments needed.

I see Menelei's back story is starting to come together...awesome conflict! Can't wait to see your final version of the story. I'll sign off now and read every bodies stuff more carefully.

Still waiting for a Ranger from Hymenopterix.

Hoo Hoo. Bye.

Working up a ranger now - sorry for the delay. No Internet at work, followed by an Xmas party. Still a bit hung over.

female elf cleric

Dwarf Fighter
Halfling Rogue
Elf Wizard
Elf Cleric
Hungover Ranger

I think this is going to be a great party.

Female Elf Wizard, 3, Per +4, Init +3, AC 13, Fort +2, Ref +4, Will +1 (Familiar: Raven) HP (18)21 (3/8 acid darts)

Hungover ranger sounds like such a great character concept!

@Menelei- agreed :)

Thought i posted this last night,...

Meet Eyotah of the Shriikirri-Quah, Female, Half-elf (Half Shoanti) Ranger (Skirmisher/Horselord)

Cash = 5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 2, 5) = 15 x 10 = 150 = 175 (average)

Now to do equipment and background and appearance. Anyone want to link? (maybe one of the elves?)

Female Elf Wizard, 3, Per +4, Init +3, AC 13, Fort +2, Ref +4, Will +1 (Familiar: Raven) HP (18)21 (3/8 acid darts)

@Eyotah, Boo (Tinuviel) is a traveler and the scion of two merchant wizards. She's gotten around. It's likely they've seen each other.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Indeed. And curious that Boo seems to always see Eyotah in the towns she visits--just before a relative of hers dies...One has to wonder!

But Boo doesn't know about Eyotah's quest. She is tracking something. An nameless horror not even she has yet fully understood!

Disregard if you don't like:)

Looks like we are almost ready. I'll activate the gameplay thread and you can dot in. Let's be patient with each other's post-rates during the Holiday.

Hidey Ho, Merry Christmas to everyone!

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 8/Magus8(Kensai,)/Investigator8(Questioner)

Just a reminder, Dairkal has been staying at the Rusty Dragon for about three months now.

female elf cleric

Menelei could easily know Eyotah or Tinuviel. She has just arrived recently, but it would not be too strange for her to have met Dairkal, either at the Rusty Dragon or out and about. He would know her as a cleric of Desna by the purple swallowtail embroidered on her sleeve.

It's even possible that she slapped a heal on Thumparr after his latest brawl. She has only ever met one dwarf before him, but she finds his belligerence highly entertaining, as long as it's just a friendly drunken brawl.

wow I have totally missed this thread never knew it started...

the character I was looking at playing is this one

he is currently listed as playing another game but that game is only Temporary as I will be assuming DM duties in that game.

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Edward I checked out that Campaign your character is in. It's run by one of the funnest GMs on the boards, miniGM. I think you should stick with it. I don't think I can handle more than 5 players right now. I'll send you top invite to the next game I run if you want and make sure you make it to the discussion board.

Background and equipment are done - appearance and personality to follow soon...

Background:

Twenty-three seasons past Shaddah, a sixteen year-old woman of the Shriikirri-Quah (Eagle clan) of the Shoanti, fell pregnant. Shaddah had not exchanged promise-vows with a man of the tribes, and speculation about who the father was abounded. None in the Quah expected that the child, when it was finally born, would bare the delecately-pointed ears of a half-elf. The child was given the name birth name of Eyotah – The Shoanti translation of the common name for the elven community that the tribe had traded with nine months before – Crying Leaf.

From birth Eyotah did not fit in with her peers. In addition to not having a father (Shaddah would never reveal his name to her daughter) Eyotah was marked as different from the other children of the Shriikirri-Quah through her slow aging, hypnotic eyes and pointed ears. Throughout her childhood Eyotah tried to prove herself to the elders of the clan, and grew slowly into an excellent rider, tracker and hunter. Despite her efforts, however, Eyotah could not match her peers, remaining physically younger than them, not even developing into a true woman when they were already undergoing their name-quests or even having children of their own.

Finally, when she had reached the age of 22 summers, the elders relented to her pleas and allowed her to submit to the test. Eyotah left the clan alone carrying only a waterskin, a flint, tinder and a small knife. For days she roamed the plains, shadowing a herd of wild horses, intent on finding the perfect beast. Eventually she managed to bond with one of the noble animals and struck-out for the old ruins where her naming cermony was to be performed. On arriving, however, the clan was not to be found. Eyotah waited for a day before setting out to find the group and eventually, cresting a rise in the endless plains, came across their remains – the whole group had been killed, and the tracks made it clear what had been responsible – a giant.

Eyotah built a pyre and delivered her family and friends to the spirit world. After this she wandered. She visited (for the first time) Crying Leaf, but found that the elves there treated her as a savage. Making her way south, she managed to get work as a scout on various caravans, journeying as far as Magnimar in the South to Brinewall in the North. Sometimes working as a scout, sometimes merely travelling. Now she has found herself in Sandpoint. She's heard that there's a festival coming soon and their might be the chance of work....

Slightly altered to go with Owlbird's suggestions..

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

We've moved to the gameboard!!!

Dot in wherever you want in Sandpoint. The dwarf and the wizard decided they were at the Rusty Dragon (map 37, see campaign thread for link)

female elf cleric

Menelei kicks the gate open and rushes through, screaming "Go! Go! Go!"

I just needed to get that out.

That's what the discussion thread is for, right?

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

HAHA...the gate swings open and you find eight goblins sitting around a fancy-nancy decorated table in the graveyard.

Tea anyone? they say:)

female elf cleric

One lump or two?
I need a bludgeoning weapon for that to work. Stupid goblins and their stupid tea.

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 8/Magus8(Kensai,)/Investigator8(Questioner)

Dair reaches into his trusty sack of holding and pulls out a mallet, which he then hands to Menelei on the sly. "Here ya go doll"

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

Yes, but what does Dair do in the real game???

Chickens! Open the gate:D

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Er...do we need to move these last few posts to the game thread?

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

I'll post to keep the game moving, but no body's told me they've gone through the gate / over the fence / back to the Red Dragon for a drink...

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

I can see most of you are checking the game frequently throughout the day. I will post big DM info once a day or so as agreed, but if you have questions about your environment, whether an option is available, how high a wall is, or if you want to do an extra perception check or anything--I check the boards several times a day and will answer with quick info for you. When all else fails don't be afraid to make an assumption about how high a wall is or something. What idiot DM won't bonk players for trying to make the game fun and move the story along?

I really did laugh out loud at Menelei's discussion post. That was funny. Maybe a goofy game is what everyone is after?

female elf cleric

no no no ... I just had to step ooc to break the tension

Perception +300 at night when finding mouse

These two encounters are complicated, I know. But they really set up the adventure path and provide a big dose of XP. There will be time in the sandbox after this:)
