Each of you arrive at camp delta at different times over the course of a few days. you are taken with all your kit to one of the half dozen drab, Vietnam era buildings on the camp any of which could be shacks, offices or . You can see a small military airport in the distance to the north.

As you enter the building with your escort of two armed American marines, both of whom have arms bigger than most tree trunks, you see a sign identifying the building as part of the Interdepartmental operations training school. The escort takes you down stairs into a basement, then to a sub-basement where there is an elevator.

As you get on the elevator one of the escorts says. "This facility is an off the books fallout bunker from the cold war. Anything short of a nuclear missile hit within 100m of the bunker will not destroy it."

The elevator descends for what has to be at least 10 levels before coming to a stop.

The doors open and you see the most well constructed controlled access point you have ever seen. A half dozen remote weapon systems connected to either a M16 automatic grenade launcher or a 50 cal machine gun are visible, The walls are made of steel plates and the only reason you can see that there is a door is due to the larger seam between it and the adjacent panels.

"The room can also be flooded with a variety of substances if necessary."

The door opens with a hiss and you enter a tiny room, separated from a control room by a half inch of bullet proof glass. A second steel door prevents you from leaving. Inside the control room are another 2 marines, each as jacked as your escort.

"Ah, one of the new candidates, here is your ID pass. Keep it on you at all times. Not that you are going to be leaving the facility frequently."

The second door opens and your escort takes you down a hallway labeled accommodations. They stop before one of the doors.

"This is your room, your ID pass will open the door. The mess is on level two. The Col will call for you when all the new candidates have arrived."

An hour or so after the last of you arrives, the intercom in your rooms activates. "All new candidates report to briefing room 2 in 15 minutes."

---

The briefing room could comfortably hold a platoon of soldiers but other than all of you there are only four other people, A British WO 1st class, a Canadian Master Warrant Officer, an Australian Major and an American Colonel. A huge conference table dominates the room and a large screen is at one end.

"Greeting gentlemen, please sit. I am Colonel Anthony Stevens, CO of the Special Tactical Assault Regiment, this is Major Wells, A Coy commander, RSM Hull and Sgt Maj Grazani. You are probably all wondering why exactly you are here. Your message didn't say Special Tactical Assault Regiment exactly did it."

He turns and activates the screen. A map of the world comes up and starts being populated by triangles of different colours.

"Our world is at war, gentlemen. Right now we have no real idea exactly what we are at war with, as they do not mount conventional attacks on targets. But to many weird things have started happening across the world for it to all be co-incidence; fortunately most incidents have been kept out of the media so far. We will determine what is causing these occurrences and stop them. Until further notice you are all part of Alpha Company, Special Tactical Assault Regiment. Before I continue are there any questions?"

The flight from Heathrow was long and uncomfortable, and after retrieving his weapons and kit from the diplomatic bag at the embassy, there was yet more travelling to be done.

Arriving at the dishevelled looking base, Mark gathers as much information as he can, trying to memorise the layout and looking for obvious defensive weaknesses, before the Marines escort him down to the lift.

The deep levels are well defended and reinforced. Mark takes his ID badge and clips it to the neck of his t-shirt. "Thanks," he says, and follows the Marine to his room, which he enters without further conversation.

Mark sets about organising his kit, stowing his weapons and equipment in the lockers provided. He makes his bed and lies down to sleep, following the advice he received in Phase 1 training all those years ago to sleep whenever you can, as you never know when the next opportunity will be.

Awoken by the intercom, Mark looks around for some way of replying. Seeing no 'send' button, he shrugs, straps his holster to his right thigh and slides the HK Mark 23 into it. Leaving the room, Mark makes his way through the quiet corridor to the briefing room.

Mark sits at the front of the briefing room, pulls out a notebook and pen, and listens intently to the colonel's words. Looking up from his notes, Mark raises his hand. "Sir, how do you define weird?"

Male Elf Alchemist/ Level 1

Jack does not have any questions at this time.

Spending most of the trip looking at structural integrity and weak spots Roger grins like a kid in a candy store when he sees the automatic defence system "Note details for 'build later' Lema." he says to his companion. Almost twisting his head off looking at it as he walks past it.

He clips his ID badge to his trouser pocket absently and tries to sleep off a bit of the jet lag while they wait.

At the meeting Roger looks up as if his mind has been elsewhere and says: "I'm sure we'll just ask stupid questions at this time without more data. But could we get the reports of all the known incidents after the meeting to look for common elements?"

"From what we can tell there are several different patterns within what we believe to be attacks. At this point we could be missing entire patterns of attacks or adding unconnected events. But all files we have will be available after this meeting."

Pete eyed the establishment, it was a sight to behold. Now it might have been his general like of movies and action, but the entire situation screamed "BIG". At no point does any government, especially multiple countries, levee such funds unless its meant to be secret and overall quite important. Not like this at least.

The rest of the time was fairly standard, he cooperated as best he could, rather not give the secret organization reason to scrub him early. He knew that much.

About the time he was cleaning his nails with small knife, his attendance was announced and he approached with much hustle. The room filled with less than 20 odd persons, definitely odd. He peered at each face, some even came from other regiments, though he was just an officer.

Listening intently when it came to questions, Pete asked the obvious, " Do we know the armaments of the Enemy, sir? And if I may, does our designation have anything to do with the similarity that was placed in one of my favorite arcade shooters Area 51, sir? S.T.A.R.R. was their acronym. If so, what is the likelihood of casualties, sir? "

"What we know is based on hersay. This foe has the ability to shut down any cameras not equipped with military grade EM protection. The foe seems to avoid locations that would have any decent security so it is more random encounters with police patrols. They talk of energy weapons that are roughly pistol sized. You know what senior brass is like, everything has to be a good acronym. We are at war solider, casualties are likely, especially at the start as we don't know what we face. But we can't sit by and do nothing."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

Pete straightens up very attentive now, " Then I guess it goes without saying that everyone here will make our deaths worth it at least. Now, I may not be high on the totem poll, sir, but may I speak frankly? The fact that we have unknown reports of exactly what the enemy is means any report should be put under consideration. I used to be part of a local police force. I can tell you that its a pain in the ass to lie about things. If they say there are energy weapons then I guess it may be time to think about researching countermeasures. I have SWAT training with the best of them, so be at ease the rest of you, I'll get the first taste of their weapons. Maybe we'll get lucky and I'll bring one back for you all to play with. Sir. "

Pete goes to an at ease, adding the sir as an afterthought.

" So... when are we leaving? I suppose I'll get time to get 'chummy' with the other fine soldiers here? "

Pete Carlton wrote:

"I don't want any of seeking a to die for your country. Your job is to make whoever these sons of %^$#@! are die for theirs. I am not discounting the reports from police, just that right now they are incomplete and contradictory. I am sure you are aware of how the mind plays tricks with our memory in stressful situations."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

Pete raised an eyebrow, then laughed and shook his head, " Ah, sorry sir. I have a morbid sense of humor sometimes and its hard for newer folks to catch it. I'm not looking to die anytime soon, my record should show that. But I've always had the mindset, ' Expect the worse and you won't be surprised when the time comes. ' Regardless, Energy weapons are a hell of a lot of mental stress to just make up. And you said yourself, the job has to get done. "

Mark sits quietly as the other newcomers express their opinions. Reassured by the presence of another Brit, who has an air of Special Forces about him, Mark notes that the American seems loud and gung-ho. Typical Yank, first question is about their guns, and he already wants to die for the cause, he thinks, making notes about his observations of the Brit and the American.

Jack listened to the questions and answers, then decided to speak up

Sir, based on the limited data we have, have we determined an optimal location for our first recon mission? Are there any fundamental ROEs we need to take into account at this time? Aka if we confine the target to a building, do I have the green light to take out a rocket launcher and send the target party favours? Or for now is it more of an "observe and report?" What sort of toys are currently at our disposal?"

ROEs were always a pain for Jack, they usually slowed down his ability to kick a door in

Alright, lets go down the list

At the first comment of her escort, Anna mutters
"I feel safer already..."
To her companion Jessica.

To the rest she just silently nods and once given her ID Badge Clips it to her belt before heading to her room and dropping her gear off and, upon hearing the message, wastes no time heading to the briefing room.

"Alpha STAR? I like it..."

Then, clearing her throat to speak up:

"Colonel, if I may? These...oddities...have we been able to recover any...samples? Anything tangible? Surely one of these encounters has ended with material evidence being recovered? Anything?

"DNA that looks nothing like anything any scientist has ever seen. It shares only 1% of its genetic code with any DNA we have previously seen. Taken from a sample of green blood that was coagulating in front of the forensic guys. Oh, and burn marks where their energy weapons hit a solid object."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

" Oh, we got a smarter one here. Most things dont have green blood. "

YES I GET TO USE THE LINE!! If somewhat modified...

"Well, If they bleed, we can kill them at least..." she ponders.

"But these energy weapons? What kind of damage did they deal? Will our gear be able to protect us against that kinda stuff? I've watched my fair share of Sci-Fi and laser weaponry can deal some nasty damage and I sure as hell dont want to get disintegrated."

"Well gentlemen it was good to meet you but unfortunately my work never ends so I must be going. RSM do you have any points."

The RSM steps forward.

"Give em hell boys."

The CO and RSM leave.

The Coy commander then begins to speak.

"No rest for the wicked troops, we are still severely lacking in men so you go on your first mission in 2 hours. Due to lack of manpower we can't even respond to all the potential sites."

"Right now there are three places that you could go. First, a bit north of here in Kansas where animals have been dying in weird ways. About 50 kilometer radius to the deaths, and isolated old farmstead is perfectly at the centre of the circle."

"Second is just north of the Canada-US border in the national parks of southern Alberta. Our Satellites have picked up images of a strange craft setting down in the forest. We believe one of our enemy's aircraft is trying to deal with some maintenance issues."

"Last, several isolated hamlets in the Yucatan Jungle have had all their inhabitants disappear. Our analysts believe they know which hamlet will be attacked next."

"Think carefully gentlemen, most of these missions are time sensitive and we won't have a chance to respond to at least some of the others in time."

Anna White-Campbell wrote:

I propose the landed craft, that sounds like where we'll get answers as to what their capabilities are, especially if it's down for maintenance.

"hhhhmmm..."

"I dont like it anymore than you buddy, names Anna by the way - pleasure to meet ya, but I'm not one for jumping head first into an Op that'd be part Evac, part Rescue, part King of the Hill in the Yucatan Jungle versus an enemy we know nothing about who have, for all intents and purposes, laser guns."

"Sucks to say but I'd rather jack one of their rides, reverse engineer the goodies aboard it and use it to blast them back to wherever they've come from."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

" Pleasure to meet'cha Anna, I was just talking ethics is all. Y'know, want to save people and all. But sometimes the logical choice is too great " He places his hand out to shake.

" Glad to see a tough woman around. And someone prettier than As-Oof! " A smaller woman sharply jabs him in the stomach, " Besides you Ashley. "

Reconnaissance Specialist | Callsign "Spectre"

Mark stands and moves over to the others. "I'm Mark. Nice to meet you," he says, holding out his hand and shaking each of theirs in turn.

"Our main issue at this time seems to be lack of solid information about this mysterious new threat. Investigating this strange craft would likely be the best way of gathering intel. Knowledge is power, and all that."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

Mark feels Pete grip particularly tight during his handshake. To test his grip or as a friendly gesture its hard to differentiate. " Sup Mark, looks like we are going to be real close. So, if thats the ticket, we should learn what we all like to carry and shoot. Or not shoot. "

Reconnaissance Specialist | Callsign "Spectre"

Bloody Yank, Mark thinks to himself. Guns, guns, guns, seems like that's all this guy thinks about.

"Before I came here, if it came to firing my weapon it likely meant that the mission had failed. I've got an M4 in my locker for when things go really wrong, and this," he points at his thigh holster, "is for quiet work. I accept that we need to carry weapons, we're soldiers, but there only so much information you can gather from the dead."

Male African American SWAT Close Quarters Weapon Specialist | " Diehard "

'Probably thinks he's better than me or somethin' " Right, Right. I see you are one of those types, but that's fine. Just dont get on me if I happen to be a bit different. When I was sent in and had to discharge a weapon, it was to do my job and save other lives. I actually don't use my guns much though.. I use a blade. "

Pete thumbs over to where you assume the room is. " Hit them hard, hit them fast. Don't conserve when that can be a life. That's how I lived. "

Female Human Paratrooper Medic

To Pete:

"Well, Seeing as I'm a Medic, I have a bit more stake in wanting to see casualties brought down to their minimum what with it being my job but I'm also against unnecessary waste of life, y'know?"

Clasping the outstretched hand.

"Well thats kind of...*cringe*ooh..thats kind of you to say." reacting to the hit.

"But, uh, it looks like you might be spoken for already, eh?" She says, winking to the newly-introduced Ashley.

And goes around shaking the hands of those who offer.

"Pleasure to meet you, Mark, I'm Anna."

"This is Jessica, by the way, my assistant." pointing her thumb back to her companion.

"Well..."turning back to the others"At this stage, any specimen is better than no specimen and I don't think Command is going to be oh-so-picky about what we bring back so long as we do. Hell, I'd LOVE to get my hands on something that has 99% Unknown DNA and conduct some tests!"

Reconnaissance Specialist | Callsign "Spectre"

"Different is good, mate. We're all here because of our different skills. I'm glad you're happy to mix it up close and personal, I've never really been keen on using my knife. I've got one, well two actually, but I'd rather keep them in their sheaths. I'm glad we're working together," he smiles, to show he means no offence.

"Hi Anna," Mark replies, smiling kindly at Jessica. I agree, anything we can bring back, tech, living specimens, dead bits, whatever; it's all going to provide intel that we just don't seem to have right now."

Male Human Dude

Nice to meet you all. This is Bob, he isn't overly chatty.

Bob nods

We're all (aboot) action in the field followed by a drink or twenty at the bar. After we finish with whatever mission we're (aboot) to face, I know plenty of good places in Alberta that serve a mean moose burger and poutine if you're interested.

Jack chuckles

A world without moose burgers..... is a world not worth saving

Bob nods

"It would seem a decision has been reached then."

The Major then gives you a few more details including:

-the exact location the craft went down
-the satellites lost the craft once it landed
-rough size. The craft is an ovoid about 10 meters long, 5 meters wide and 4 meters tall.

"Captain Dodger will be your pilot. Your helicopter will leave in 1 hour 45 minutes."

Ashley gives a nod and a wink shaking both Anna anad Jessica's hands before shoulder checking Pete and greeting the rest, Pete chuckles. " Heh, she just caught me off guard. That's Ashley Chun, been with a few drug raids and bad negotiation rushes together. She is still salty about being one year my senior but having a lower rank. It's because I'm more stupid is all. " Rubbing his midsection though you know its half in jest.

Looking over to Mark he gave an abbreviated nod, " I don't get, er, time to interact with... People from other places. Detroit isnt well known for its mixture of races. But hey, you all are part of my squad, so we can get over that. Just don't mistakenly shoot me in the ass okay? "

Giving the double point at Jack and Bob, " Y'know I hunted moose when I was 14, ornery sumb@@!%es. Never had a burger though, I'll have to join you in one later. This 'facility' looks like it got everything you can think of. "

" Looks like we gotta suit up though. Alright Ladies, time to Lock and Load! *Rick Flair* WOOOOOOO! " The battle call rings down the corridor as Pete takes a light jog to his quarters. Ashley waits until he is much outta sight to shake her head.

" I promise he's been potty-trained and broken from the bottle, so do make sure he doesn't hit his head when we land? My job is hard enough as it is, with wonder-boy mucking it up. Seriously though, word of warning, Pete looks all childish, but he's brutal. Hope none of you are squeamish. " The woman cracked her knuckles and then headed off.

As the Coy commander mentions the downed craft Roger's head WHIPS up and his eyes go wide and an equally wide grin spreads across his face

"No fu$king way..." Lema says as she looks at him

"Like I said, there's nothing I can't fly, they brought me here to fly the unflyable" Roger squirms in his seat like he's got a mouse down his trousers until they start discussing which mission to take. "Downed aircraft, downed aircraft for the love of queen and country"

As people start to make introductions Lema goes around and introduces herself and starts chatting, to Jessica she says "I can't believe this, Roger bet me on the way over here that he'd get to fly an alien craft, so we made a bet ...if he's the first human to fly an alien craft I'll need to shine his boots till the day I die ...and then my children will."

Roger walks to the group grinning as he introduces himself.

"Hi Mark, I'm Roger, good to meet you, I think I've seen your face around Credenhill, nice to finally make your acquaintances" the SAS HQ is in Credenhill

"Hi Pete I'm Roger, good to meet you, I'm a blade man too, but given the chance I prefer a nice tank or fighter jet" he pats him on the shoulder. "Ashley, good to meet you too, Chun, that would make you Cantonese? Is your family from Hong Kong or Guangdong? I've had some specialized tech made for me in that area in Dongguan" Roger is the type to look for the interesting sub-plot

"Good to meet you Anna and Jessica. I hope you guys can offer us some local's info on what to expect there"

"Good to meet you too Mark, I don't think I've had a moose burger yet, I look forward to that"

"I've never seen anything I can't drive, so I look forward to seeing the downed craft, I'm also an engineer and demo specialist so I really look forward to seeing this new tech"

Female Human Paratrooper Medic

" As much as I'd like to play tour guide and all while we're in a National Park but, I gotta say, I'm not from around those parts so I won't be all that helpful, hah! Besides, Forest is Forest. At some point they all look the same. More or less..."

"Also, turning to Jack"Glad to see another Canadian here. At least he'll know some spots around where we're going."

"Now, I'd like to stay and chit-chat but, seeing as we've not got less than two hours before we ship out, I'd like to take some time to unpack, freshen up, eat a bit and gear up if y'all don't mine. I'll meet you all on the launch pad or whatever."

And Anna leaves to go do what she said she would.

"Roger, you're SAS right?," Mark replies. "Good to see another survivor of Selection. Look forward to working with someone else who's mainly fuelled by tea. Speaking of which, I'm off to the mess hall to get some before this whole thing kicks off."

Mark heads off towards the mess hall, looking for some tea.

"I'll join you Mark, we'll need to refuel for the trip. Lema, be a dear and prep our gear before we head out. Join us in the mess after so you can read the reports over." Roger rustles her hair and heads off with Mark. Lema smiles and heads to their quarters to make sure everything is good to go.

Sorry guys, I was out playing Mordheim with some buddies.

The only patters you notice fit one or more of the following of the following profiles:
- incident happened at night
- incident happened in an isolated area

- electronic recording devices fail for no explicable reason
- multiple people or animals disappear without a trace
- computer systems have been accessed and all files copied

Having gone about your tasks before the mission you make your way to the hanger where you are greeted by an American Air Force Captain standing beside some kind of large stealth helicopter.

"Hey guys, names Powerline, I will be your ride for today. We have a sweet ride for you today, just last week I was a test pilot on the program for it. Now both of us are here. It is the latest in stealth technology, flies as fast any other chopper and even has padded seats and in flight entertainment."

Once everyone and their gear is loaded into the helicopter you take off, a hole opening at the top of the hanger to let you out. The flight takes about 2 hours and the only entertainment is Powerline's crazy flying.

eventually he comes in over the intercom.

"You guys are going to have to fast rope it. Not even I can land in this bush."

As you get in position you see that the forest is thick here will little in the way of clearings. All you can see to the horizon is trees, hills, mountains and some snow at the tops of the mountains. It is currently about 2 hours before dark.

Everyone give me a +20 agility check.

Pete was decked out in what everyone saw was a red and black tiger stripe motif on his equipment and tactical outfit. His helmet was full visored covering his face. An actual sheathed Longsword adorned his lower-back along with an M16 with a cross and a shotgun. He swings down with the best of them, similar to when he had to burst through windows on a raid.

" Got it! "

Mark joins Roger in the mess hall for tea, or at least an American approximation of tea, and a review of the data available so far. He then returns to his room to grab his gear. With his HK Mark 23 on his thigh and his M4 dangling from a three-point sling, he strides out to the flight line.

Boarding the chopper with the others, he picks a seat and settles into it for a nap. The crackle of the intercom wakes him two hours later.

When a space clears Mark makes his way to the door, grabs the thick rope in his gloved hands, and slides down.

Ag 42+20: 1d100 ⇒ 61

Been too long since I've done that, he thinks, as he manages to land without snapping an ankle or crushing one of his squad mates. He moves away from the rope, pulls his Mk23 from it's holster and starts to scan the LZ.

1d100 - 20 + 10 ⇒ (95) - 20 + 10 = 85

My agility score: 31 (I factored above the 10 penalty for best with plates)

Jack's Loadout:

-Rocket launcher (emergency button)
-Auto shotgun
-Mono knife

Slots:

-Shotgun ammo reload (3 mags)
-Rocket ammo (+1 bonus round, 4 rounds)
-Grenades, photon (x1), frag (x2)
-Data slate (forward thinking)

@Browman, does heavy get the three reloads as per other weapons? That would mean between Bob and I, we have a total of 5 rockets... (one with weapon, three with slot, bonus with heavy gunner. Please advise.

After Powerline refuses to let Roger fly the bird he nonetheless enjoys the flight immensely thanks to Powerline's crazy flying.

agi test: 1d100 ⇒ 26 Agi 40

Do we get -10 for flak armor? If not 3 degrees of success, otherwise 2. If I can I try to stabilize either Anna or Jack as we descend.

Do we know where we are and where our supposed downed craft is?

[dice=Agility Test] 1d100 So. I have Agility 36 +20 for test = 56. So. yeah. Off to a good start.

However, I have a Clip/Drop Harness as part of my gear and the Catfall Talent. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo if those can help me in any way not eat s$%+ on LITERALLY MY FIRST DICE ROLL I'd be grateful.

But, otherwise, SO glad I got a Photovisor for Night Time Stuff and have Blind Fighting woo!

With the harness you take no damage but it is a less thsnthan graceful decent.

Unfortunately you fall 3 meters. Since I don't have my book in front of me and I want to keep things moving I am going to say you d10 -toughness bonus damage rather than what the book says so things do get delayed by half a day.

1d10 ⇒ 6
