Oooh. I did not know that we were limited to a discovery check OR an influence check. I went back and read the discussion post on the mechanics and see that was clearly laid out. At least I get to keep the good roll. I will most definitely not be wasting my chances on discovery though anymore.

GM Nowruz wrote:
Only Analia Frostburn and Umbrato are allowed one check (influence or discovery) in this phase. You are up!

Umbrato, you are still up! And I think we lost Analia Frostburn. Do you want continue with 5 or recruit another player?

Hmmm ... I know there a players looking for games so let's recruit another player. And the end fight is not easy I think. ;-) But it is your decision.

I asked a player but if they don't join we continue with 5. Umbrato, you can still make your check but I will continue now.

Journey to Pariol Island

The journey to Pariol Island is straightforwards and efficient, and you arrive on time in the early evening, having watched the sun go down from the quarterdeck of the Sterling Sapphire. The whole journey is an eight-hour party.

See map of Pariol Island on slide 4. The port is at the east of the island. In the centre are pavilions. North of the pavilions are guest cottages. At the far north of the island is a chapel. To the southwest of the island, a burned down "summer house."

The Sterling Sapphire docks on the east of the island. The docks look newly constructed. A cadre of Shafar's mercenary guards keeps watch, and you are ushered off the pier. Servants take the guests luggage.

A newly paved path leads into the island. It is lit by oil lamps, on posts, at regular intervals. Liveried servants direct you. The sound of romantic lute-music fills the cool night air.

WELCOME PARTY

As you reach the centre of the island you see a group of beautiful silk pavilions. More liveried servants bring yet more wine. An elegantly dressed woman of middle age greets the guests as they are showed to seats in the main pavilion. She has olive skin and long, straight black hair, and is dressed in a formal crushed velvet dress that accentuates her form without being inappropriately revealing.

"Welcome, welcome honoured guests! Tonight, and tomorrow, we celebrate the marriage of my beloved eldest daughter Michellia. We honour our contract. We honour our family, and the family of the groom. We remember what makes us strong. We give thanks for our friends and our allies. But there will be time enough for speeches! There will be food and drink to last the night through! The wedding ceremony begins at dawn, my friends. Vroclaw assures me it is much easier to endure without a hangover, so of course I have ensured that remedies are provided in your guest quarters!"

THE NIGHT BEFORE

There are now five players to influence in the next phase :

Nigel Aldain. You have uncovered Nigel's weakness. Mention his marriage, and influencing him is easier. No influence, yet.

Alexander Bedard. You have no influence, yet.

Hamaria Blakros, mother of the Bride and Matriarch of the Blakros family. New player in the scene.

Jeon Raeng-Woo. You have discovered his drinking weakness. Mention his marriage, and influencing him is easier. No influence, yet.

Rubaani Shafar. You have no influence, yet.

Influence phase: welcome party (1/3) is about to start.

Hamish the Bard wrote:

With his failure to gain any insight he simply offers his most useful skill to the mercenary guard commander, "you look like someone who appreciates order and productivity. I've got a little trick here I can show to get everyone moving to the same beat." He clips on his drums and pulls a couple sticks out, starting an impromptu performance.

Influence Check w/ Perform: Percussion + MW drums: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 2 = 30

(Diplomacy is a +10, so you could just use that if the drums are a bit over the top.)

Example

Warning! SHIRTLESS MALES IN THE VIDEO!

Hamaria's gaze moves about as she keeps tabs on all her guests—whether to ensure no one has an empty goblet or for some other, more politically motivated reason, she gives no indication.

When she hears Hamish's great performance she walks over to you.

"Pathfinders! I am so happy you could make it! My family greatly values our mutually beneficial relationship. Hamish, you are quite the performer. Have you seen the bride yet? Michellia is preparing for the ceremony with her handmaids. It's bad luck for her to be seen the night before the ceremony you know. Michellia and her twin sister mean the world to me, of course. It is a shame that Eleanir could not be here to share her sister's joy, but she is off adventuring in Garund with Imrizade and her other cousins."

You have won over Hamaria! No further efforts needed. I allowed this to affect Hamaria as she is concerned with the whole ceremony and wants people to have a good time ... so a performance like this is great.

GAINING INFLUENCE: Diplomacy check (to be genuine), an Intimidate check (to frighten the NPC into submission), or an appropriate Perform check (to entertain and amuse the NPC).

Terrance is going to further try to influence Jeon Raeng-Woo by one of the best ways the infiltrating alchemical lab-rat knows how; Drinking.

Having some more wine from the servers that are tending to everyone, he goes to Jeon and offers him another full glass. "Come on, lets celebrate! Ain't every day we get to watch two fancy-pants nobles get hitched, Amiright?" As Terrance pours both of them glasses to drink. Holding up his glass to cheers, he clinks his glass with Jeon's and offers a real moment of comradery!

When Jeon is drinking his glass, Terrance uses that moment to instead pour half of the contents of his own glass into a flask for later, in order to break down the chemicals and figure out what this booze is made out of, maybe sell it at his own business!
Sleight of Hand Take 10 for 22.

"Ahhh now thats the good stuff! I could learn a thing or two about brewing this kinda goods! You should join me for drinking at my own shop in Isger sometime- I got the best little place to make all kinds of brews! My assistant, Momoko, is this wonderful little doll who knows all about blessing the wines of Aroden or something like that." He chats him on and on about his shop in Isger.
Influence Check: Take 10 on Bluff to pretend to actually be getting drunk and being friendly. End result is 17.

Nigel's smooth exterior does not hold up to Kolris' subtle scrutiny, and the curator practically jumps at the chance to speak in his area of expertise rather than his family.

"Ah, well, the museum is, of course, one of the family's greatest achievements. It was formerly the base of a powerful wizard. Now, it is the foremost private collection of antiquities in the Inner Sea. I'd wager my collection rivals that sealed within the vaults of your Grand Lodge, master, er... you have me at a disadvantage I think? Oh well, I just wanted to make clear that I am fully supporting the extended cooperation with the Society!"

"Very good! How I wish I could also take art as my only purpose. I have to test my blade against against the spawn of the abyss but more often than I like against thieves and bandits! You wish to know how your Society can foster the cause of Freedom? Show all these so-called 'nobles' that they are no better than anyone else! We have no kings in Andoran. We exiled all those 'nobles' who would not join with the cause of Freedom! Nobody deserves to be held above other people merely because of the circumstances of their birth! The symbol of the open road is emblazoned on the front in a similar golden color to contrast the red. A meticulously shined wayfinder is the only jewelry or accessory visible.

What is considerably more noticeable, however, is that this pathfinder is decidedly monkey-like. Mosi favors Terrance with a wink, oddly grateful that he isn't the only one with a hairy face.

"Mosi is my name, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I do apologize for not being on the boat with you. I returned early from another mission and Valsin sent me off before I hardly had a chance to sit down in the hopes I could catch up to you. And it seems I have." he smiles and now bows to his new team. When he stands back up, he leans on his staff and looks each of the pathfinders up and down, measuring them as they are certainly measuring him.

Ok - So in regards to peacebonding. Mosi generally carries Shuriken and a quarterstaff. He is happy to leave the shuriken behind, and will use the quarterstaff like a walking staff (a la Gandalf). If asked to peacebond it, he will frown, but comply without incident. This restriction is honestly not much of a restriction for Mosi! He has a few knowledge skills (History, nature, and religion) is a pretty good sneaker, a fantastic climber, and is pretty perceptive. Diplomacy is one thing that he isn't very good at actually, so I'll try to stay out of your way on that. He is very chatty though, so feel free to ask him anything!

Mosi lets out a small gasp of delight at Terrance's song and dance. He cannot help but saunter over to see what is happening.

"In my travels I once met a band of gypsies. Desna may not be worshipped here, but she must be smiling! When it comes to dancing, I honestly have two left feet. This looks like too much fun to miss though. C'mon Jeon Raeng-Woo, I'll bet you haven't danced like this since your wedding day!"

Mosi quickly finds himself stepping along with Terrance, laughing along with the trio as he tries to keep up with the beat.

Syl'las dancing is helping to steady Woo and together with Woo and Mosi you clearly see that you have won his heart. A little dizzy and also drunk Woo looks at you with a smile.

"You Pathfinders are great at a party! My work is quite boring ... but this is fun!! Here! Have another glass of the 4701 Iadaran chablis, it's chilled to perfection! Let us enjoy this wedding ... and all its wonders!" He takes a swig of the fine elven wine and smiles at you broadly.

It is now past midnight, and the 'welcome party' shows no sign of winding down.

The Paracountess Zarta Dralneen glides over to you whilst you are conferring. In a quiet, breathy voice she murmurs to you.

"Oh my darlings, don't look now but we have a latecomer! Tancred Desimire! That deviant viper! Advisor to the Imperial Throne, and cousin of the groom. One of the most powerful men in the empire. How I would love to see him humiliated here! Oh but be careful darlings, Desimire is truly venomous..."

Dralneen slinks away and starts whispering in the ear of a handsome young guest before you can respond. You scan the room, and see the man that she must have been speaking of.

Desimire is a middle-aged man with carefully trimmed black hair and a distinctly retreating hairline.

The Chelish noble is dressed in fine black attire and looks on at all the activities around him in sinister amusement.

Half a dozen guests have already surrounded Desimire, eager to speak with him.

Influence phase: welcome party (3/3) is about to start.

There are now six players but only two to influence in the next phase :

Tancred Desimire. Very late to arrive, but obviously comfortable amongst the nobles and potentates. There is always a crowd around him.

Alexander Bedard. You have minor influence, yet.

"Well met, citizen!" Bedard's grasps the chance to speak of his homeland.

Did you choose your parents? Did you earn your natural gifts? Is it not unjust, for one man to have enough to feed and house twenty whilst his fellows starve in the streets?" Bedard is in full swing ...

Hamish walks over with a smile, "did I hear you talking about freedom and equality? That is right up my ally!"

He introduces himself with a firm handshake and continues, "Hamish is the name, servant of the Lady of Graves. Now, from my knowledge of her teachings it is quite evident that all are equal in the end. And if all are equally judged in the end, why not do the same while we live?"

Waving up at his obviously not enough elven and not enough human ears, "plus, if I let the circumstances of my birth effect my confidence then I wouldn't be worth much at all!"

"Hey Syl'las, I'm gettin' some bad vibes from that guy." Terrance says while looking at Tancred Desimire. "He just seems, I dunno, creepy." Terrance takes a long pull from his tankard he acquired after singing and dancing, eyes never leaving his target.

"I'm gonna try to get a read on him. Watch my 6'." He then heads on up to Tancred. "What strikes your fancy, Mr. Tall-Dark? Little brandy, bourbon, champagne? Maybe a bit of the good ol roulette of cocktails?" And he holds out a flask or two of cocktail concoctions he calls Oatmeal Cookie and Four Horseman.

Terrance notices that Tancred is at home in social environments, and
he does a good job of seamlessly moving from different gaggles.

After some listening and observing Terrance believes that Tancred Desimire is ambitious to a fault, and while he has moved quickly up the ranks of the Thrune government's bureaucracy, he can be easily angered if somebody brings up certain reminders at how far he has left to climb.

During the wedding, he probably is most easily placed off-balance by mentioning Paracountess Zarta Dralneen or his brother, Aglorn Desimire. You hear during one of the more private conversations that Aglorn was a member of the Aspis Consortium, and was killed by a team of Pathfinders in the isolated demiplane contained within
the Hao Jin Tapestry.

Zarta tells you all that Tancred holds no ill will against the Pathfinder Society for his brother's death, believing Aglorn made his own bed by joining the unscrupulous Aspis Consortium.

He does, however, blame Dralneen, whose representatives among the Pathfinders left behind a token of the paracountess's ire ... he believes that the Pathfinders planted a letter on Aglorn's body decrying the House of Thrune, and putting Tancred at risk of reprisal.

Kolris nods at Hamish as he arrives. "Ahh, Hamish; join us please! Mr. Bedard here is on the Andoran People's Council. Most prestigious, and he's been telling me the most delightful tales!"

Returning his attention to the Andoran, he bolsters Hamish's efforts. "Isn't it funny, here we are at this elaborate noble wedding, and they seemingly have no clue that our ideas would undermine their society if seen through to the logical conclusion." The elf bursts into boisterous laughter.

After Hamish and Kolris appraoch Bedard and speak to him, you see a servant approaching him and handing him a note.

Bedard reads the note, and his face reddens. He screws up the piece of paper and clenches his (rather massive) fists.

"Is this some kind of sick joke?!" he almost shouts.

Then he shakes his head and turns to Hamish and Kolris and looks at them intently.

He continues to talk in a lower voice: "Everybody here is with those Hellknights and Blakros! That bastard Kastner has put this servant up to this! He knows how I feel about Michellia! He's invited me here just to humiliate me!"

Other guests nearby overhear Bedard's outburst, and mutter to each other. Many of them are grinning.

Bedard continues talking to Hamish and Kolris.

"At least you understand me ... you understand that I had to come here to make a difference!"

"Ahhh, I see there are movers and shakers at this party." Mosi steps into a conversation that Tancred had been having with a group of Taldan nobles. The information relayed to him by Terrance buzzes around in his head, while he tries to figure out how to best use it.

"Do you even know whom you are speaking with gentlemen?" Mosi asks two men who appear to be content with their buzz and their proximity to powerful people. "The Desimire name is infamous in the inner sea. They attack each day with an ambition unknown to mankind." he smiles, raising a glass. "Destined for the upper crust is what I heard, am I right Tancred?" Mosi feigns a deep interest in the percieved power of the Chelaxian noble.

"What is your title now? I don't want to be rude and address you with the wrong moniker."

Mosi's smile appears just like the two fanboys next to him, hangers-on who just like being in the presence of power. Secretly he smiles at his own cleverness at possibly getting the man to admit his relatively low station in front of a small crowd.

Kolvis and Hamish are surprised when Bedard does not want to stop talking

"Ah, my boys, I bet you want to hear the story of the People's Revolt?"

Bedard smiles, and puts his thick arm around Kolvis' shoulder.

"It was 4669. 48 years ago. I was but a babe in arms. Accounts differ as to what exactly happened first, but what is certain is that both the merchant class and the working class refused to languish any longer under the yoke of House Thrune! We emptied the prisons, and freed all the slaves. Since that blessed day, no Andoren has endured slavery! Following the wisdom of Jubannich and Hosetter, we united as one people! We demanded and won our freedom! In unity and fraternity, we rejected the rule of corrupt aristocracy. And unlike those Galtan brutes, we did not seek to kill our former lords. Instead we offered them equal citizenship, and many accepted. The rest were exiled. The lands and properties that the old masters had expropriated from the people were redistributed for the common good. Now, we enjoy Common Rule. I am but one of 350 elected representatives who sit on the People's Council. If I fail in my duty, my equals, the free citizens of Augustana, will replace me at the next election. You know, my boy, I feel strongly that you would flourish in Andoran. Perhaps you even have the makings of an Eagle Knight."

Bedard continues to regale you with stories of the People's Revolt, and the heroism of the Andoren Eagle Knights, for as long as you listen. When he suggests that he would be willing to sponsor you for a visit to the Eagle Knight, you know that you have won him over.
