Psycho Mantis will cast Hypercognition before attempting one of the knowledge (engineering) checks. In addition to giving him a +6 insight bonus on the roll, he completes the check five times faster than normal (unless it would take 3 rounds or less, in which case he does it instantly)
Psycho Mantis focuses his mind, collecting all the of the miniscule bits of data that he has observed in his own interactions with the portals, as well as those he has gleaned from his more technological companions, and synthesizing all of it into a mental picture of what he needs to do.
Knowledge (engineering) w/Hypercognition: 1d20 + 8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 6 = 22

Psycho manages to rebuild one of the power dampeners in a little under 1 minute (7 rounds).
Just as Psycho and Dimble finish rebuilding their power dampeners, Tig-0 looks up from his computer terminal. "New data files available. Data file update: Lord Karamoss ordered the destruction of the Forge and the entire Red Redoubt! Override code: 'Karamoss-α-1-1-9-α-α-4-7-β' confirmed. Deactivating interdimensional failsafe. Maintenance units: New command protocol: Priority: ONE. Reverse portal stabilization; Prepare portals for energy overload; Forge core meltdown imminent. End subroutine."
With a few keystrokes, Tig-0 deactivates the failsafe that had been keeping the portals from opening to the Plane of Fire. At this, an alarm klaxon sounds loudly in the chamber. (SFX)
I'm going to go ahead and put us into rounds.

Barth moves 40 feet, drawing his double barreled pistol as he does so. (move action; both barrels already preloaded with Adamantine Paper Cartridges)
He then starts growling ferociously as he takes aim (free action Rage; standard action fire both barrels)
Left Barrel, Touch: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Right Barrel, Touch: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 (*phew*, that was almost a misfire)

Right Barrel Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Tig-0 takes 17 points of damage from Barth's double-barreled pistol.
@ Barth: My reading of Up Close and Deadly is that you must spend the grit in advance. You then get 1d6 extra damage on a hit, or 1d6/2 damage on a miss.

The ability has conflicting wording. On the one hand, the first sentence reads, "when the pistolero hits a target, she can spend 1 grit point to deal extra damage on a hit", which tells us that it's a choice the gunslinger makes after hitting a target. But then the next sentence reads "if she misses, then do this", which wouldn't be possible if the first sentence were true.
That being said, since it's totally not clear, I'm fine with however you wish to rule it. I've adjusted Barth's statblock accordingly.
Until I get Dexterity to damage and a magical firearm, that Deed is my only damage boost =(

Since Tess was ahead of Barth in the original initiative order, can I use my Fortune hex to allow him to reroll one of his attacks if he chooses to do so? If not I will use the Fortune hex on Psycho to allow him to reroll a d20 if he chooses this round.
Tess uses her Fortune ability, increasing her teammate's chance of striking the traitorous robot!
| GM "The Fox" |
@ Tess: No, the way I run initiative is that it is open. If you are in the same block, you act in the order you post (unless your post specifically says that you are Readying or Delaying until a specific condition). Basically, everyone is delaying until they post. My understanding is that this is pretty common in PbP in order to keep the game moving.
But the good news is that Barth is targeting a Large creature who is blind (so no Dex or Dodge to AC, and a –2 penalty) with a weapon that resolves against touch. :) I think Tig-0's touch AC is around 7 right now.
You can use your Fortune ability on a different ally, or on Barth for next turn, or you can do something different if you'd like.

You also need to be within 30 feet of your target. I moved you 5 ft (as a 5-ft step) so that you could target Harmonius. And I am declaring that your Cackle is on the Fortune you put on him instead of Barth. So Barth's Fortune has ended, and Harmonius has Fortune for 2 rounds.
