Amsheagar
|
Amsheagar looks around the room, seeing if he can see/smell anything else.
Perception: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (13) + 30 = 43
| DM Kludde |
The dagger is magical. Amsheagar investigates the room, and finds a word written on the mosaic floor, nearly faded but written in blood: "Abandoned".
+1 mithril dagger
Glaurung of Anfauglith
|
"Well we are looking for "a dagger befouled". This must be it. If you're all too pussy, then let me." Glaurung pulls up her sleeve and reaches in to retrieve the dagger.
Jebediah Heliotrope
|
"What, you mean this dagger?", Jebediah says, flipping it from one hand to the other. "I agree, it probably is the 'dagger befouled'. That said, it is a +1 mithral dagger, too."
Nalshene
|
"What is this 'plus one' that you mention?" :-P "Magical" is what I'd usually say in-character.
"In any case, if we've found the dagger, we're one step closer to our goal. Let's continue."
Nalshene looks around for another exit from the room, and heads over to it, waiting for one of the more melee-focused of the group to barge through the door.
Amsheagar
|
Amsheagar mews until someone comes over and notices the word written on the floor.
| DM Kludde |
Anything you want to do here, or shall we move on? If so, where to next?
| DM Kludde |
This is one of six identical small sepulchres. Rough, black iron gates bar the arched entryways, and inside Jebediah sees that each internal wall has nine stacked interment vaults, a total of twenty-seven in all. At the centre of the crypt is a limestone sarcophagus, bearing a faded inscription.
Amsheagar
|
Is this the inscription that Amsheagar is trying to point out?
Nalshene
|
Oh! Sorry Amsheagar.
Before leaving that room, Nalshene notices Amsheagar standing in a spot and meowing at the floor. She walks over.
Perception: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (14) + 23 = 37
Linguistics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Pad The Pyro
|
Perception, smoke goggles: 1d20 + 24 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 24 - 4 = 23
Pad attempts to find a lever or mechanism to raise the black iron gates bar to the arched entryway.
"Anyone find anything interesting?"
| DM Kludde |
There's two carvings: one in the chapel (which reads 'abandoned') and one faded one at the base of the sarcophagus in the sepulchre ('E')
Jebediah has a good look at the faded carving, but only manages to make out the obvious: "Adellus". The iron gates can be opened by disabling the lock (DC 30).
Pad The Pyro
|
Pad checks for traps after briefly removing his smoke goggles and replacing them with his sighed enhanced goggles from his Handy Haversack. Then, he slides the smoke goggles on and disables the lock with masterwork thieves tools.
Trapfinding, t10: 10 + 24 + 7 = 41
Open Lock, t10: 10 + 31 + 2 = 43
I just realized that Eyes of the Eagle wouldn't stack with smoke goggles. I will adjust perception check unless stated otherwise.
| DM Kludde |
Pad doesn't find any trap on the entrance, and disables the lock with ease, enabling the opening of the fence.
Amsheagar
|
Amsheagar, feeling a little silly looking at every nook and cranny, runs through the opening to the fence and quickly dashing to the left to avoid ambush that might be waiting.
| DM Kludde |
Even thought crypt was only locked with a metal gate, the air inside is surprisingly stale, and smells of something unspeakable.
I'll need a Fort save from anyone who enters
Jebediah moves in, along with Amsheagar, and a through look on the base of the sarcophagus in the middle shows that the writing has indeed completely faded. Jebediah can only assume that the inscription was an epitaph for 'Adellus', the only word still readable.
The other alcoves list members of the Adellus family, listed by initial only: H.S. Adellus, D.D. Adellus, J.F. Adellus, L. B. Adellus, R. M. Adellus, G. R. Adellus, J. E. Adellus, R. W. Adellus, G. H. W. Adellus, W. J. Adellus, G. W. Adellus, B. H. Adellus...
Jebediah Heliotrope
|
Well, I guess that includes me...
Fort: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (5) + 17 = 22.
"Looks like there is nothing here. Let's move on."
Satisfied that there is nothing in this building, Jebediah moves on to the next building.
I have moved my icon on the map to indicate which one I mean.
Amsheagar
|
fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 ... fml.. it's not my day for re-rolls
Sorry Jeb, just moving things on.
Glaurung of Anfauglith
|
Fort: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Glaurung lets out a cough as she enters. "Bit stale in here, isn't it? So," she looks about at the crypts, "this is their line, huh? Any of the initials look familiar to any of you?"
Pad The Pyro
|
Pad follows his companions into the stench. He activates his wand of Air Bubble (1 min) assuming they warn him of its effects before he enters. He will activate it on others upon request.
Fort save if applicable: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Wags finger at dicebot.
| DM Kludde |
The initials should look familiar to the players. Who can guess what the initials of the Adellus in the middle are?
The absence of a further identifier on 'Adellus' implies that these graves are quite old, from before the time that the branches were established.
The stale air affects Nalshene, Glaurung and Amsheagar. A dry coughing overcomes them, and soon a debilitating curse takes its effect
Damage, to Str and Cha, Amsheagar: 1d6 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 6
Damage, to Str and Cha, Glaurung: 1d6 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 4
Damage, to Str and Cha, Nalshene: 1d6 ⇒ 41d6 ⇒ 5
All are also exhausted
The effects takes 1 minute to set in, and that's when you first notice the curse's effects (other than the stale air). I think it's reasonable that that is the point where Pad can start casting air bubble.
Jebediah Heliotrope
|
I have Life Bubble running; would that have worked against this?
Jebediah looks on in concern as three of his allies are overcome by something, and start to melt away in front of him.
That is one vicious curse - I mean, thanks to Exhaustion, Glaurung alone effectively just went to Strength 5 :-/
"Pad and I seem to be proof against whatever this is... Perhaps in future, when looking at the smaller buildings, at least, not all of us should go in at once...?"
Still happy to move on to the next building, as indicated.
Nalshene
|
Nalshene, having taken some serious damage to her abilities, pulls out a wand and casts her only charge of lesser restoration.
Lesser resto for Cha damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
She also becomes fatigued instead of exhausted.
"I apologize, friends, that I do not have more of this magic available. If any of you do, I would greatly appreciate having more of my strength restored as well. I'm still feeling a bit woozy.
Ouch. Even after getting back to only Fatigued, Nalshene is at effectively 0 Strength right now. She isn't taking any penalties to her spellcasting, though, which is more important in my opinion.
Pad The Pyro
|
Pad produces one scroll of Restoration.
"I've been saving this for a rainy day. The question is who needs it more?"
Any more lessor restorations in the party's resources? I thought I had a scroll with 5 lessor restorations, but I do not.
Jebediah Heliotrope
|
@Nalshene: The penalty from Fatigue or Exhaustion is exactly that - a penalty; that means that it can't reduce you below Strength 1; which is good, because at Strength 0 you are paralysed...
Shinkeer Aswander
|
Fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Shin moves into the room, and begins to see his companions react to the air. "I do not have any restoring scrolls, but I could cast a spell granting you the strength of a bull."
Amsheagar
|
I thought i bought another scroll of lesser restoration after i used my stash a few scenarios ago.
The tiger that is Amsheagar shakes as if he is dislodging water, but other than feeling uglier he is not effected too much by the spell.
Glaurung of Anfauglith
|
Thanks Pad! I usually buy several scrolls of lesser restoration but I hadn't played Glau in a long time before these games and it seems I forgot. That should completely fix Glau up I think.
"Oof!" Glau begins coughing uncontrollable, becoming incredibly weak. "Oh, thank you Pad. I have smelled some might awful things and people before, and huffed quite a bit of. . . well, anyways, that was some foul air. I'm feeling better now. Phew! I owe you one, Pad. Maybe we can exchange some fire later, if you know what I mean."
Pad The Pyro
|
"You're welcome! You can repay me in pastries that next time we walk past a decent bakery. We better follow Jeb before he loses us."
Pad recites divine incantations and activates his Restoration scroll on Glaurung (3 round casting time).
UMD scroll DC 27: 1d20 + 27 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 27 + 2 = 41
UMD, ability score DC 14: 1d20 + 27 + 2 - 15 ⇒ (2) + 27 + 2 - 15 = 16
@Glaurung: Which ability score did you want restored, charisma or strength? You only get one per casting, but you are no longer exhausted or fatigued.
Glaurung of Anfauglith
|
Probably Str for now. 4 Cha hurts but 6 Str damage almost takes away her ability to melee entirely. Thanks!
"Well, if that's all it takes, sure thing hon. But I owe you quite a few pastries then."
| DM Kludde |
Life bubble would have protected you, yes, unless Jebediah touched anything.
The next building is very similar, and the air is similarly stale. Another big lock bars the fence, and inside are more alcoves like the previous one, filled with Adellas names.
Jebediah Heliotrope
|
If nothing stands out as particularly different, Jebediah will move on to the next building (position updated on map). Again, if nothing stands out as different about that building, he will move on the next building (the larger one to the left of his current position).
| DM Kludde |
The next smaller building, is much like the previous one, but the three buildings in the back are somewhat more interesting. Clearly newer, these building have been constructed after the Adellas' branches appeared. Each of these buildings is similar, and each is essentially empty, save for a 10-foot medusa’s face, carved on the floor.
The west most building is crafted of green marble, the entrance carved to mimic the maw of a ravenous lion. Its carving depicts the howling medusa crest of the Sardisi clan.
The middle building is constructed of pale granite and decorated with numerous bas-relief carvings of nautical scenes from the Grand Campaign. The carving depicts the mocking medusa, its forked tongue extended.
The third building is of gray basalt, and unlike its sister buildings is plain and functional in design. Chiseled above the entry arch is the phrase, “The Living Make Their Plans; the Dead Watch, Amused.” The carving depicts the cross-eyed medusa.
Amsheagar
|
Amsheagar prowls along, sniffing at oddities. active perception is 40 and scent.
Glaurung of Anfauglith
|
Glaurung hangs back and lets the others check it for safety first, after the snafu last time.
| DM Kludde |
The crypt smells musty and stale, but doesn't contain the peculiar funk of the previous locations. Amsheagar doesn't notice any traps.
Pad The Pyro
|
Pad continues following behind his companions. He casts Detect Magic and scans the area. "It feels like we're all waiting for a ghost or medusa to suddenly appear. I better play it safe and scan for invisible runes."
See Invisibility is already active.
Nalshene
|
Nalshene pulls herself up onto Narshala's back, grunting from the effort with her Strength severely sapped. The two of them then follow the party into the crypt.
Perception: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (12) + 23 = 35
| DM Kludde |
The dead watch amused, or so the inscription reads, as the adventurers carefully make their way into the large building. Pad an Nalshene stand back, observing, and Glaurung and Shinkeer wait as well. It seems like nobody dares take a step forward.
Amsheagar
|
Amsheagar pads forward, and looks around at his team before proceeding further. He will stop if anyone says anything.
