Frightened:
Frightened
A frightened creature flees from the source of its fear as best it can. If unable to flee, it may fight. A frightened creature takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. A frightened creature can use special abilities, including spells, to flee; indeed, the creature must use such means if they are the only way to escape.

Frightened is like shaken, except that the creature must flee if possible. Panicked is a more extreme state of fear.

The crisp chill of the Arcadian Ocean can be clearly felt as it sweeps across the fetid waters of Riddleport Harbor and onto the city streets, and the briny air inspires recent memories. Only a few days ago, back in Magnimar, Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch detailed the covert mission from behind the oaken desk in her office. "Lissala is the Thassilonian goddess of runes, fate, and obedience," she explained. "Her followers are wicked and secretive, but they can be bought for the right price. The Aspis Consortium offered that price. In exchange for creating a back door into the Hao Jin Tapestry — a museum demiplane that we Pathfinders thought was entirely our own—the Aspis Consortium promised a river of wealth to the secretive cult. The Pathfinder Society ejected the Aspis Consortium from the Hao Jin Tapestry and the Consortium defaulted on its contract with the cult of Lissala. As you might expect from followers of a goddess of duty, the Lissalans are irate at the Aspis Consortium for defaulting. Tensions between the two groups are at their breaking point, and I need you to finish the job."

"Vidrin Jenk is a silver agent in the Aspis Consortium, newly arrived in Riddleport and anxious to prove his worth to the organization. The Aspis Consortium recently purchased the Barracuda Cartage company, and Jenk operates out of the offices there. Jenk plans to patch up relations with the cult of Lissala, which is well hidden somewhere in Riddleport. To help him, Jenk requisitioned a group of Aspis Consortium specialists—all bronze agents led by a mysterious troubleshooter named Thestil Shadowtongue."

At this point, Venture-Captain Heidmarch slid several bronze badges across the desk, some flecked with blood. "Those specialists aren’t going to make it to Riddleport. You are. I want you to pretend to be the Aspis Consortium agents Jenk requested. Do as he asks, but only to keep suspicion off of you until you find out where the cult of Lissala is hiding. Once you know that, I need you to do two things. First, sabotage the Lissalan safe house as completely as possible. Second, throw the blame for the sabotage onto the Aspis Consortium. How you complete these tasks I leave to your discretion, but I want you to keep murder to a minimum. One of the Lissalan cultists is feeding us information, and I don’t want to risk you killing this valuable source. Furthermore, we want the Lissalans to remain alive so they can turn their full ire against the Aspis Consortium. Once you’ve accomplished these two mission objectives, return here."

Heidmarch smiles broadly. "Welcome to the Aspis Consortium. Any questions before you leave for Riddleport?"

A rather serious-looking bird-like humanoid stands still and quietly in one corner. His dark brown plumage, streaked with black stripes, gives him effectiveness camouflage in the shadows. He is dressed in simple short robes, although under them you can see the glint of silvery chain mail. Other than a well-made crossbow hanging from his belt, he does not appear to be carrying other weapons. Except for his razor sharp claws and beak, that is.

He listens intently at the captain's briefing, until she passes the badge, and even he can't help but break out into a grin. To sabotage the works of the vile organisation of snakes... Well, no better task than that.

Nonetheless, he does not throw his natural caution to the wind. He looks at Heidmarch from the corner of his eyes. "Would it not be easier to simply let us know the identity of this informant, so we do not accidentally remove your asset? Or you suspect we might fail in our operations and not wish his or her identity exposed should we crack?" Not that he intends to murder anyone so there's little risk of harming this informant doing good work, but he does wish to see how far he can push Heidmarchh.

"Also, I trust you have some other group to stop the snakes hired by Snaketongue? Most unfortunate if two teams should turn up."

A tall human with wavy auburn hair down to his very broad shoulders leans lazily on the wall at the back of the room. He's wearing a crisp military uniform with a round, silvery shield covered in runes slung on his back. "Don't worry, Bro, I, like, think those badges totally belonged that other team. I'm most experienced with all this spy stuff now, so I'm starting to get the hang of how things like this work." He pushes himself off the wall and flashes Kazu a friendly, toothless smile as he approaches the desk for a closer look at the bronze badges.

Eadric's once handsome face now looks a little like someone took it apart and forgot where all the pieces go when they put it back together again, his nose has been broken in multiple places and he has a single cauliflower ear. However, he moves with a certain bouncy cheerfulness that implies he isn't the bruiser his face suggests he is. "Is there anything we should totally know about these things, Sis? I mean, like, do they have names and stuff on them, or if they come in other metals and stuff?" He asks Heidmarch as he pickis up a blood flecked badge and turns it around. "I think bronze is most excellent and all, but silver is way nicer."

Now Now darling, no need to worry about that. The Snakes always have some bruisers around in case somebody isn't ready to pay the price they want... so long as there is somebody around for the talking.

Walking forward is a tall, astoundingly beautiful person, though you can't quite put your finger on whether they are male or female. They are dressed in a beautiful red silk dress, and their flowing blond hair reaches down to their mid back. The person steps up to Eadric and gives him a kiss on the cheek.

Wonderful to have my favorite burly bulk of muscle again darling. I hate when they separate us... but such is the life of the pathfinder no?

They pick up one of the badges and hold up a hand to snap their fingers. Suddenly, they look very different. Instead of astounding model beauty of before, they now echo forth a different kind of beauty. Their skin has darkened like they've spend most of their life in the sun, small scars from mirade battles pepper their body in armor and uniform that is... just slightly to revealing for it's purpose. All in all, they now look more like a beautiful roguish vagabond.

Infiltration is my specialty after all boss. Do we have any intel on Jenk themselves?

Tenibri laughed at Cypher's transformation. "You make it look so easy!"

Having grown comfortable around much of this crew, Tenibri's hood has been down, allowing the tattooed, deep indigo skin to almost stand on display. The hood will go up and remain up as soon as the group ventures into public, but for now, the white dots that form the tattoos almost seem to dance across his face as he makes his way forward to grab his own badge.

He seems to like the questions that have already been asked, and waits for Heidmarch's answers.

Totally for got about these.

History 15+ or Religion 20+:
Lissala was the Thassilonian deity of runes, fate, duty, and obedience. Her worshipers are generally sadistic self-flagellants who believe that self-inflicted pain opens the mind to enlightenment.

History 20+ or Religion 25+:
Lissala taught the seven virtues of rulership to Thassilonians, but these virtues became perverted under the runelords to reflect the seven mortal sins. At that time, Lissala’s worship grew more secretive and more sadistic. Many scholars assume that Lissala, like most Thassilonian gods, is no longer worshiped.

History 30+ or Religion 35+:
Lissala may have created rune magic. Her followers commonly use runes and glyphs, including rune-carved guardians akin to golems.

The Aspis Consortium is a supranational trade organization with shadowy leadership and a reputation for ruthless trade practices.

Local 15+:
The Aspis Consortium hires countless common mercenaries and merchants. Bronze agents hold the lowest rank of actual membership in the Consortium. Bronze agents are overseen by silver agents, who are in turn overseen by gold agents. A gold agent usually administers affairs in a large city or small nation.

Local 20+:
The Aspis Consortium has made several loans to power groups in Riddleport, including the three primary temples. These loans were drafted with intensely legalistic language and included steep interest rates, which the temples are often reluctant to pay, further entrenching them in debt.

Local or Religion 15+:
Riddleport’s primary temples are the Publican House, a tavern-temple of Cayden Cailean; the House of the Silken Veil, a brothel-temple of Calistria; and the Fish Bowl, a temple of Besmara.

Local or Religion 20+:
The Publican House is the tavern-temple of Cayden Cailean. All are welcome in this crowded, rowdy
drinking hall, except for cyphermages. Gambling and drinking contests are common at the Publican House.

Local or Religion 25+:
The Besmaran priests at the Fish Bowl are rumored to perform blood sacrifices on those who have displeased the Pirate Queen. These sacrifices often involve feeding victims to dangerous sea creatures.

Unphased, Heidmarch gives a quick response. "It would, but they remain secretive. The simple answer is that we just do not know who they are. We know something of them, but not much: The informant is a cleric, is probably human, and has been feeding us reliable intelligence. We don’t know any more than that. That’s one reason you shouldn’t indiscriminately kill everyone in the safe house." She takes a seat again, and continues. "I have full confidence in your abilities. If this was not the case, you wouldn't be here to begin with."

Kazu Chuko wrote:

She raises an eyebrow and puts her finger to her chin, looking at the badges she provided. "No, they will not show up. Your colleague is correct to assess the origin of the badges in front of you."

Eadric Brightcoat wrote:
"Do they have names and stuff on them, or if they come in other metals and stuff?"

"We know that these badges are issued in at least three metals. Bronze, silver, and gold. Each of these metals indicates a rank-like status in the Consortium. Bronze are the lowest of pawns with actual membership. If your badges were silver or golden, you could be asked questions to which you would likely have no asnwers to. In order to preserve the ruse, that is not desirable. You will notice that one of these badges is more ornate than the other ones. I suggest whoever wishes to imitate Shadowtongue carries that specific badge."

"We are not sure at this point, but we know it involves several major temples in Riddleport. You will simply have to ask him directly. Thestil Shadowtongue has a reputation for being an all-around troubleshooter concerned with anonymity. Since Jenk requisitioned a team with diverse skills—just like the group of you—you should be prepared for anything."

She pauses before continuing. "Before you depart, I want to make sure you understand that we are not interested in a bloodbath. If the Consortium suffers several suspicious deaths at the same time the Lissalan safe house is sabotaged, it will implicate a third party. I can’t have that. Play nice and don’t blow your cover.", she pauses and continues after a brief moment of thought: "A special mention in regards to Virdin Jenk. The man must report deteriorated relations with the Cult. It is -imperative- that he remains oblivious to our involvement. Preferably, do not kill anyone if you can help it. If you absolutely have to, make it look like an accident."

The Aspis Consortium’s headquarters in Riddleport is a dilapidated compound showing signs of recent repair. The cartage company’s main building rises three stories above the filthy streets. Behind this main building stands a coach-house large enough for four wagons. A weedy yard is enclosed by a high brick wall, but the large wooden doors to the yard stand open to admit new business, even in this evening hour. Beside the doors, a wooden sign reads, Barracuda Cartage. Under New Management.

The yard in front of the building seems busy with a dozen or so workers loading carts with a large shipment of fine sailcloth. Overseeing them are six thuggish mercenaries, who approach you as you stand near the entrance.

"Something you need?", one of them asks while they all give you an examining look.

PG, Cypher... PG. Not that I mind, but you know - gotta be careful around these things.

The man looks Cypher up and down as if looking for something, slightly confused. Actually, more than one mercenary does. Two of them at the back of the group whisper to each other, contemplating on Cypher's gender.

Did I mention that Riddleport is also known as the City of Cyphers? Because it is also known as the City of Cyphers.

Hesitantly, the man responds - "Perhaps a chat over some ale later. For now, let's keep it business-related. This way, please.", he turns around, lifting his hand to indicate a diraction. Unsurprisingly, pointing to the warehouse. "You guys watch these workers. I'll escort mis...", he stutters, "Erm, Shadowtongue and their crew to Jenk. I'll be right back."

Moving through the yard and the building, the man tells you that they operate on a strictly need-to-know basis, so he can't provide much information. He give you some of his own observations of Jenk - that he is a busy man, and there's more to him that meets the eye. Perhaps he keeps a facade of an ignorant merchant, but that's just the guard's opinion.

Mere minutes later, you find yourself on the second floor of the Barracuda Cartage building, outside of Jenk's new office. And it looks the part. Not the way it is clean, but mostly empty. A simple table, a few chairs, several cabinets and early decorations here and there. Jenk himself is sitting at his desk - a snappish, sharp-nosed administrator dressed in the elaborate finery of a merchant-prince. He stands behind a desk strewn with contracts and ledgers, doing his best to read multiple papers at once.

He looks up from the papers as the mercenary knocks on the door frame, and goes with a simple "Yes?" as a response.

"Shadowtongue and their crew, Boss.", the mercenary introduces you. Briefly, but to the point.

Jenk drops his papers and stands up, inviting you in. "Ah, yes - at last we meet in person. Come sit down?", he gestures towards a few chairs he has in the office next to the wall opposite of his table.

Get your bluff on.

They walk over and sit in a chair, crossing their legs but leaning back and spreading their arms.

Forgive the paranoia. You don't spend your life handling things without considering the possibility of being handled.

As the others (Presumably) "Check" the office for things, Cypher continues.

This is the crew. Less you know about them, the less you can blab under a Abadarian Paladin's Circle of Truth. You've seen our credentials, so you know what we're capable of. So, tell me what the job is.

Helme does a cursory sweep of the room, and takes a place to the right of the doorway.

Let the entertainment begin. This fop doesn't stand a chance against Cypher and their skills. If that doesn't work Tenibri is a good backup.

The party quickly searches the room. Not like there's much to search through anyway. The place is clearly freshly refurbished, or is about to be, rather. Besides the table, chairs, one cabinet, and the carpet, there's not much else to look at. Jenk eyes you curiously as you do your search spiel, and approaches "Shadowtongue". "Pardon my curiosity. Could I see your badge? I hear it is quite intricate."

Cypher, roll a bluff for me, while you are at it.

Eadric does his best to look like he's done this hundreds of times before, checking for hidden traps, spies, or assailants. Woah, this guy's office is boring! Would the use of magic here be suspicious? Either in respect to Riddleport's customs or the behavior of the Aspis Consortium?

If it wouldn't seem suspicious for the Aspis to have a caster along, Tenibri casts detect magic as a part of his search. He otherwise remains silent and tries not to stand out, allowing Cypher to do all the standing out that they need.

Little known fact: if you misspell their name, the Aspic Consortium seems far less threatening.

Aaaand this is why I'm a diplomancer, so that I can still be smooth on a crit fail.

Cypher pulls the badge of Shadowtongue out and nearly fumbles it. An embarrassing misstep by anyone else, but Cypher does their best to play it off as a flip of the badge to show off.

I only have the best. The best badge, the best crew, the best work.

Hah! Way to pass a DC 20 Bluff check, right there.

Jenk observes the badge, and seems mildly amused. "Very nice, indeed. Custom work?", he starts asking questions, but realises time is of the essence. "You know what - we'll talk about that later. You are here for a reason after all."

He dismisses the mercenary and invites you to sit down. Jenk himself returns behind his table but remains standing until everyone else in the room takes a seat. "Some of you may know me, some of you may not. My name is Virdin Jenk, and I run the Consortium's operations in Riddleport. Since this is not some backwards settlement, you can imagine I am a busy man. Especially now, since we recently acquired this building."

He sits down and quickly glances over you while continuing the briefing. "But to the point. We were having trouble with one of our contractors recently - the local Lissala cult. I intend to remedy this situation. We will do this by presenting them with a few gifts to show some good will on our side, and by showing that other religious organisations in Riddleport are already cooperating with us. We've lent out a large sum of money to three temples here in Riddleport, so there's that. However, their payments are slightly overdue, and the interest on all these loans is overdue by now. Fortunately for us, we have other sources of income here, but it might prove useful in regards to the Cult of Lissala. To show we are on the divine's good side in Riddleport, I would like to collect objects of religious signifficance from the three local temples with debts towards us, and gift these items to the Lissalan Cult. As I mentioned, I am a busy man, and I can not collect these items. I have already sent missives to these organisations to honor their debts. I have not heard back from them as of yet."

He reclines back into his chair. "This is where you come in. You will go to Publican House to acquire a sacred mug, the House of the Silken Veil to obtain a magical dagger, and the Fish Bowl to pick up a magical bicorne hat. All of these are of religious sgnifficance, and the temples in question know which items we're interested in, but if you wish, I can give you the details directly." Jenk leans forward again, and sets his elbows on the table, and assuming a more serious look. Not that he was not serious up until now. "Since I have not received a response from the temples so far, I can only assume they are reluctant to part with the items. This is not surprising, however. Some coercive negotiation might be necessary. A deal is a deal, however, and we have contracts on the loans signed with all of the organisations I mentioned. We have a right to claim these debts back, be it in form of currency, or otherwise. But you know how law works in Varisia - slow. Doubly so here, in Riddleport. And I need the items here tonight. Is everything clear?", he looks over you again, expecting you to ask questions or to leave.

Cypher raises an eyebrow.

I assume that since you plan to continue business in the area, smash and grab isn't acceptable, but we have appearances to keep up... I assume the occasional kneecap may be sacrificed if necessary?

Cypher gives a cruel smiles... it's frankly kinda disturbing to see on the enchanter.

The gods work in mysterious ways after all.

Giving a moment for Jenk to answer, Cypher continues after.

Who are our contacts at these places of worship? More specifically, who knows and was present for the signing of the loans? Religious types tend to fold easier when they know they are in the wrong rather than letting them delude themselves. Also, details on the items themselves... wanna make sure we don't get pawned some cast off trash to try and avoid giving up what they hold dear.

Tenibri is struck by the... similarity... he sees in the Aspis leader. This could be a Pathfinder Society mission briefing. Just how different are our two organizations after all?

"What can you tell us about the Lissalan Cult? My mum had told me they didn't exist anymore. Thassilonian, right? How long have they been operating here, and how big of an organization are they?"

Eadric smiles as Cypher asks their questions, occasionally emphasising a point or two with a crack of his knuckles, parroting the words, "Smash!" and, "Kneecaps!" He has no questions of his own, however, and just spends the time listening and planning. Ha, we can totally do this! Trash a room or two, pick up the wrong gifts, and it'll be, like, most excellent to botch a burglary or two.

"The dagger is an enchanted one, and shaped as a wasp's stinger. The handle is a leather one, with a black base and yellow stripes. I hear the blade itself is very intricate with ornaments or engraved writing.

The hat is the one and only Besmara's Bicorne. It's a bicorne, old-looking, but in perfectly working condition. It has all the features you would expect from a hat belonging to a Pirate Queen - black, jolly roger and all that, no pompous decorations. It's nothign fancy, but it is of signifficance to the temple in question, naturally.", Jenk leans against into chair again.

"The mug is - well, it's an old, battered metal mug. Nothing special about it, other than the fact that it can fill itself with clean water on command a few times a day. Again, nothing fancy, but symbolic."

Jenk looks over to Tenibri with a condescending manner, then back to Cypher and speaks.

"Apparently, Lissalan worshippers are still around, although not as numerous as in the past. We know very little of the local cult. They're being quite secretive and we weren't able to track their representatives after our meetings. I assume some magic is involved. The simple answer, though hard to admit, is that we don't know. At least for now. I should have more information on their safehouse later today. I have contacted another Aspis agent recently, and they always deliver."

Cypher nods and stands up.

Certainly. We'll work as quickly as possible to retrieve the items. We'll be back soon. The fees, of course, will be standard operation fees, especially for something as simple as this. Good day.... we'll be in touch. Come on fixers, let's go.

They wave to the others to walk outside, and as they are walking away from the building, look at the others.

No loose lips team... let's find someplace we can talk...

-----------------------------------
Once they find a alleyway or someplace far enough away to have a conversation, Cypher looks at the team.

Well... Seems simple enough. Go the the priests, talk them into giving us the items, or at least somehow coming up with convincing fakes, and give them to Jenk. Anyone have any objections to just going to the priests and playing aspis types? I highly doubt we'll actually have to break any kneecaps...

After hiring a ferry to get to the other side of the river, you soon find yourselves on the northern edge of Riddleport. The locals happily point you in the direction of the establishment in question. To no surprise, the 'temple' of the Accidental God is an actual tavern. The Publican House is a sprawling building of rough-hewn wood and weathered shingles. Large bay windows of leaden glass provide an expansive view of the river. Loud cheers issue from the tavern, as does the sweet smell of spilled ale.

Several intoxicated patrons lift stools and tables stacked with metal cups brimming with ale. The interior of the Publican House is spattered with large puddles of ale and broken furniture, bot nobody seems to mind. There's nobody behind the bar, but people lifting stools and tables are being overseed (to an extent), by a bearlike man with meaty fists and a notched sword swinging at his hip.
