The passage the priestess takes you down is just wide enough for you to squeeze through, and low enough that the taller among you must keep your heads down. It is cut through the bedrock the city is built on, and after several minutes, it comes to an end. A ladder leads up, through a trapdoor in the floor a small, one room house built of stone bricks. The door is bolted shut, and the windows shuttered. A thick layer of dust covers broken furniture and a faded old carpet.

Outside, you hear a woman wailing for a moment, but the sound is cut off abruptly. The sounds of fighting and the howls of fell beasts seem distant, as though the fighting had not reached this area. Under those sounds, you hear a low, steady roaring, and the smell of smoke confirms your suspicions. Few in Thebes built in stone. The houses of the common people were of wood and reed. The city is burning.

"We must reach Azizi's wine shop, near the western caravan gate," Aurora whispers, when all have assembled. "It's only a few blocks from here, near the beggar's bazaar."

She eases the bolt back and slowly pushes the door open. The night sky glows orange as the city burns. Though the fire is still distant, long trails of smoke wind along the streets, and embers drift down. You are in the midst of the shantytown that lies behind the temple hill, at the edge of the western desert. The houses around you are flimsy shacks that will burn easily, and the street you are on dead ends at the cliff face of Temple hill. To the west, it bends out of sight a few ramshackle structures down. Only a few people can be seen, hurrying away to some other place.

Damage to Trekos: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Trekos pauses in his exultation, the damage of the day settling into his spirit. He looks at his companions and realizes for the first time how badly some of them are injured.

"My friends, forgive my focus on my own fortune. Allow me to give you the blessing of Hermes, and restore some of your strength before we go further."

Variel:
You venture into the street, and seeing that it reaches a deadend to the east, advance carefully as far as the bend. Fifty feet down the street, you see an intersection. A desperate man carrying a bundle of his possessions runs into the intersection, and is cut down by a scimitar. Through the billowing smoke, you see a half dozen skeletal shapes milling about in the intersection, carrying cruel blades.

Across the street from where you are, there is a narrow alley that leads between two of the rundown structures.

We're going to have to wait for Trekos to build his character now.

On hearing Ali's question, Trekos looks slightly shamefaced and says "My teachers at the temple have always scolded me for not studying enough, I'm afraid I have no knowledge of such things. I fear I will be learning through experience - but such lessons always stick better, eh?"

Haven't picked up any knowledge skills yet, so Monster Lore doesn't help me. Next level! Variel?

As you confer, the sounds of battle continue in the distance. The roaring of the fire gets closer, and you feel an unfortunate breeze from the north carrying thicker smoke, more glowing embers, and the stench of burning flesh. Somewhere in the sky overhead, you hear the sound of immense wings flapping, but when you look up, all can you see is smoke.

Knowledge: Local 20:
The beggars bazaar and the caravan gate are straight down this street. You would be able to see it from here if it weren't for the billowing clouds of smoke. They alley takes you out of your way, to the south.

Not a huge deal, but do try to restrain the impulse to use player knowledge.

"Skeletons? They do not bleed. They can't be killed, only battered into pieces," Aurora whispers, looking a little pale at the thought. She seems to notice the tip of her javelin still glowing, and the light disappears, leaving you able to see little more than one another's outlines in the smoke and darkness.

"I can call it back," she whispers.

I know it says I can make untrained knowledge checks to identify the creatures of my favored enemy, but I'm not sure if that means I will know anything specific about them. I'll make a roll and wait for confirmation of what I can get from it.

"I have been attacking them when I could, but I have yet to face any head on..." Variel pauses and thinks.

Sorry about that. I normally do a little better than that.

Male Elf Ranger(Skirmisher) 1

After hearing what Aurora has to say Variel nods. "If that is the case, I may not be of much use against them with my bow or sword." Hearing the sound of the wings he adds, "I'm not sure that that could be, but it doesn't bode well. We must act quickly. Which route will we take? Around them, or through them?"

Trekos, Hermes be praised. That does feel better. What do you all feel about an ambush? Not wise to leave enemies at our back, neh?. Ali looks from one to the other.

Perhaps using the flat, wrapping our blades or the very scabbards themselves.

On hearing the advice of Priestess Aurora, Trekos sheathes his blade and reaches for a smaller weapon hooked on to the back of his belt. It is a smallish mace, its smooth metal shaft broken by the stylized forms of two snakes twining around it, their shining backs and rearing heads forming rough knobs at the business end of the weapon.

"If the creatures can only be destroyed by battering them, then let us batter them, and we'll see how they enjoy meeting the caduceus of Hermes. And if we can take them by surprise, all the better."

female human commoner 1

Variel:
In addition to what Aurora said, you also recall that skeletons are unaffected by cold and many other forms of attack, including those that attack the mind or the general fortitude. (since it is your favored enemy, you would probably know this, I expect).

Ali:
Modifying your weapons this way will effectively make them improvised weapons. -4 non-proficiency penalty to attacks, critting at 20/x2, dealing bludgeoning damage with the ordinary dice for that weapon.

With the priestess's light out, you are in Dim Light, causing a 20% miss chance to those without Darkvision. She will light it again upon request, or if combat begins.

"I could cause a coin to glow with divine light, we could use it to draw the skeletons near without using you as bait, Ali. I will not be able to heal you again until I have time to rest and ask Hermes for his favor again."

Cast Light on a copper piece and throw it into the street, to attract the skeletons? The heroic option of Ali as bait works too, just offering an alternative.

Trekos dips a hand quickly into his belt pouch and pulls out a coin, commenting "Ach, a gold piece! Well, if it works, I'm buying our lives cheaply."

The coin in one hand, Trekos raises the other hand and rubs the tips of two fingers briefly together. Tapping the coin with his index finger, he quietly says "fos" and a light shines brightly from the coin for an instant before he closes his fist around it.

He passes the coin to Ali, keeping its light hidden as he does so, and says "Draw them in if you can, and we will strike. If they are too many, throw the coin where we can see its light and we'll all make a run for the alley Variel saw. At least a fight in a smaller street will keep us from being surrounded. Thank you for trusting me. Now, hide and forget hope. It's time to execute. I will draw them in, hopefully past your positions. Use me to flank them.

Ali moves towards the street, not yet using the coin-beacon.

Busy night, but I managed to make at least a functional map that we can use. I'm sure there's a better way, but not tonight. You're all bunched in a lot more that you probably are, really, because I didn't leave much space on your side of the corner. Lesson learned.
The Intersection

rolls:

Alekto 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Ali 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Trekos 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Variel 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Aurora 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Skeletons 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Assuming combat begins, Alekto and Variel act before me, then I act, then you all act, then I act, etc.

Male Elf Ranger(Skirmisher) 1

As Ali begins to move down the street, Trekos looks up to the heavens, briefly touches his forehead with the four fingers of one hand, and reaches out and touches Alekto on the shoulder, whispering "odigia". Cast Guidance. +1 on a single attack roll, save or skill check of your choice in the next minute.

Trekos then ducks low and darts across the street to hide in the mouth of the alley, his mace in his right hand, his sling held ready in his left.

Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

female human commoner 1

To be clear. Using the flat of your sword, wrapping your blade, calling it a truncheon, or otherwise altering your slashing or piercing weapon to do bludgeoning damage and get around the skeletons DR will work, but not well. Since it is not what the weapon is designed for, it is treated as an improvised weapon (-4 to hit, same damage dice it would normally do (but bludgeoning damage), crits on 20 for x2)

As Ali moves down the street, bashing his weapon against his shield, the skeletons take notice. The bones rattle as they march down the street towards you. They seem intent on Ali at the moment.
