Mines of Madness - D&D 5th Edition (Inactive)

Game Master wicked_raygun

A really fun adventure (For the DM, at least).

Btw, I am quite happy to go through as well, just being characterful...

No, I get it. You guys have been great roleplayers throughout this entire endeavor.

Male Human Rogue (Thief) 3 | HP: 0/21 | AC: 14 | Ini: +3 | Passive Perception: 14 (Darkvision 60ft.) | Saves: -1 STR, +5 DEX, +1 CON, +4 INT, +2 WIS, +0 CHA | Shortsword or Shortbow +5 (1d6+3)

For all you guys know, we could already be dead, teleported into solid rock or thousands of feet up into the air.
But from a gameplay standpoint, being separated is really bad.

Everyone is wearing metal aren't they?

HP: 24/24 | AC: 18 | Init: +0 | Saves: Str: +1, Dex: 0, Con: +2, Int: -1, Wis: +5, Cha: +3 | Hit Dice Remaining: 2d8 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Save DC: 13 | Spell Slots Remaining: 1st: 0/4, 2nd: 0/2

I believe Alton and Vasayo are wearing Leather Armour.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

Well let's shove one of them in front and get to business.

- INACTIVE (finished campaign) -

My melee weapons are metal.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

Yeah, but how often are you using those?
I know! Someone hit them with the diamond pick!

HP: 24/24 | AC: 18 | Init: +0 | Saves: Str: +1, Dex: 0, Con: +2, Int: -1, Wis: +5, Cha: +3 | Hit Dice Remaining: 2d8 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Save DC: 13 | Spell Slots Remaining: 1st: 0/4, 2nd: 0/2

Randal is only carrying the handaxe as a backup in case bludgeoning doesn't do the trick. I'm not that worried about the -1.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

I was carrying it as a ranged weapon until I realized my firebolt cantrip had the same average damage.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

As a sidenote, I just realized I have a battleaxe, not a warhammer.

HP: 24/24 | AC: 18 | Init: +0 | Saves: Str: +1, Dex: 0, Con: +2, Int: -1, Wis: +5, Cha: +3 | Hit Dice Remaining: 2d8 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Save DC: 13 | Spell Slots Remaining: 1st: 0/4, 2nd: 0/2

I had a look back though the lower map and we haven't been through any coos able rooms. It's pretty much been one long hallway.

HP: 24/24 | AC: 18 | Init: +0 | Saves: Str: +1, Dex: 0, Con: +2, Int: -1, Wis: +5, Cha: +3 | Hit Dice Remaining: 2d8 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Save DC: 13 | Spell Slots Remaining: 1st: 0/4, 2nd: 0/2

Just read back a little to remember what area 22 was. Let's not forget we found those three healing potions in the rotting backpack.

I vote Vasayo, Randal and Derval each hold onto one as we seem to be in the melee taking the most hits. What does everyone else think?

Maybe Vasayo should take two?

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

I may need some help understanding the exact situation.
I thought Vas was in a room with only one entrance/exit, and that was through the obsidian door with password "glitterdark" (which no longer works). I also thought that room had a knife and an altar, and that, having no currently available entrance/exit, the knife could not be moved from the room (nor could Vasayo).

It sounds now like I'm being told this "glitterdark" door is easily bypassed and we can freely enter/exit this room through another means, but there's some third door we're trying to gain access to, and for some reason we've left Vasayo alone in that room to figure it out.

Male Human Rogue (Thief) 3 | HP: 0/21 | AC: 14 | Ini: +3 | Passive Perception: 14 (Darkvision 60ft.) | Saves: -1 STR, +5 DEX, +1 CON, +4 INT, +2 WIS, +0 CHA | Shortsword or Shortbow +5 (1d6+3)

We went through the secret door that opens with the word glitterdark. We went through a tunnel and came into the altar room, which at first only I entered. When I removed the dagger the secret door behind us was sealed and on the other end of the room, an obsidian slack blocked any further advancement. So basically both exits are sealed and we are F'ed. Only once we sacrifice someone, the obsidian will vanish, or so it promises.

Oh! Well that clears it right up.

@GM: I think you wrote willing sacrifice, so murder doesn't seem like a legit option here. I'm really surprised the spell worked on the Glitterdark door. The dungeon isn't terribly evil after all ... maybe.

I have to do something now. I want to see the end of this dungeon and to be honest, I never imagined Vasayo to keep on living this long.

Thank you for the very enjoyable adventure and I hope you like Vasayo’s last official post. (I as his player will keep on reading nevertheless and will harass you with witty comments to the best of my abilities.)

Don't worry, Vasayo. This is D&D. Death is mostly an inconvenience here. I just wanted to see if someone would take the plunge, as it were.

Stay tuned for my next post. You haven't finished with the Mines of Madness yet. :-)

In my experience with the scenario thus far, I will rise a ghoul at best and be banished to float in this place as a ghost for all eternity at worst. This place is pure evil and madness, this will be fun :D

Poke. Poke. Just wanted to see if you guys are still with me?

I'm there, but as I said, Vasayo has no intention to leave his perfect hiding spot :-D

Anybody feel lucky and will poke the golem? Another idea would be breaking the crystal that's blocking us with the diamond pick. I'll back you up :-D

I was thinking the diamond pick idea myself. Let's give it a whirl!
Though I probably should have detected magic on it by now. Oh well.

Is there some kind of prize at the end for most times at the brink of death? Vasayo is bound to win :D

Hey all I'm on holidays this week and headed for the beach. Posting may be spotty, I will do my best.

I had a bit of hope that we would beat this thing but now...

You're not dead, yet, Randal. And neither is Grith or Derval. So there's still a chance to pull out of this for you.

But, sadly, we say goodbye to Vasayo and Alton. You guys have been amazing. Thank you for taking on this nigh-impossible challenge. Honestly, I didn't think any of you would even get this far.

I hope you guys can cheers on the others from the Discussion tab until this wraps up.

And, seriously, you've all been great sports about this whole thing.

This was fun. I'm glad I got the opportunity to try 5e. :-) Thanks for the ride, eh?

It was great fun! I really liked Vasayo in the end. I guess he will make a return as an NPC in my Forgotten Realms Campaigns :-D
I really enjoyed the ride and well, we knew from the start how this would end.
Let us know if we got close to killing this thing or if it regenerated or whatever

It was an epic way to go, man. I'm going to miss all of your characters.

You know, this PBP might be the first 5th Edition game played on the Paizo website to completion. Granted, "completion" in this case is a relative term, but still.

Where can I get this module if I want to run it for my friends?

I tried to find the Mines of Madness .pdf online but no dice. It was originally given away for free as part of the D&D Next playtest. Since then I haven't seen it for sale anywhere. I'll make a point to setup a Dropbox for it later tonight.

Fun fact: If you Google "Mines of Madness" this campaign is like the third result.

Awesome! Well, not the part with us all dying, but given the nature of this adventure, we were dead men walking.

I found the adventure somewhere online for free the other day, I'll see if I can dig up the link.

I found it

Vasayo was evidently a Jedi Master before he died.

And, holy ***! Randal, my man. That was insane. That couldn't have been scripted better. Take another inspiration point and a freaking bow.

That was awesome! I imagine this being Randals origin story, telling how he became the somewhat cynical and brooding priest main character in some action movie.

Nah, no jedi master, just an ordinary ghost, haunting this place until some adventurer finally makes it to the bottom of this cave, finding the forever stone.

...and many, many apologies for my low posting rate. I posted less than half of the group average. :-(
I don't plan to taking on another pbp whilst working full time for a while.
