Dottie takes in the sight of the man in purple, but stays hidden in tree cover. She follows the shadow of Batman flying (unless the camo field prevents that), and when she can catch up with him and the coast is clear, she emerges and asks, "You know that fella that was flying by? Looks like you buy your outfits at the same store."

"Let's look at what's in the bag--don't want to take it to Doc's if there's a bomb or something."

She examines the exterior of the bag first to see if it's booby trapped or has any specific opening mechanism... or if it's, ya know, a duffle bag.

"He may be a crook, but at least he's got taste." he says with a shrug, handing her the bag. "And especially not if there's a tracking device."

He keeps watch in case any of their less-favorite people show up.

Notice: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34

The bag is a black waterproof duffel about 4 1/2 feet long. It opens with a zipper, and the zipper pull is zip tied to a metal ring with a heavy tie. It doesn't appear to be trapped or dye packed or anything.

Opening the bag, you find two shrink wrapped bricks of cash, maybe a million in each brick. And, sewn into the bottom of the bag, a pen sized steel tube with a red LED glowing on one end.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie looks visibly disappointed. "Money?" She sticks her tongue out. "Is that it?"

"Could the glowy blinky thing be a tracking device? Can you send a picture of it to Doc?"

Her fingers trace the shrink wrapped brick thoughtfully. "Is this what those boys were packaging up in the warehouse?"

He'll send the pic, and his thoughts on it.

While the techs are consulting across the city, Dottie carefully cuts a small slit in the plastic with her switchblade and pulls put one bill with her hand (as always, gloved). She examines it to be sure it is genuine.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie considers. "Well, it's probably nothing good, and since you don't recognize it, it's nothing useful to us. The money's for real as far as I can see--if it was say, stolen from a bank, there might be a record of the serial numbers on the bills lost or something--unlikely, but I don't think it's a good idea to hold onto this. Batman, you mind flying by the nearest police station and dropping this off?"

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

I posted while half asleep (and mind am just waking up now -- I know if the cash was just spread around or whatever people wouldn't necessarily recognize it as stolen. But if it was reported stolen from an institution the police might ID it as such--which is useful information. If the money wasn't given to the police she'd want to give it away anyway.

Batman - Felix Marshal | Bruises/Wounds: 0/0; Hero Points 2/2; Conditions: None

"I'm not in it for the profits." He'll make a quick note - "Found this in central park." and drop it off at the nearest station.

Funny.

Provided nothing else happens, Dottie bids farewell to Batman, "See you at work tomorrow!" She wanders aimlessly around New York for a little while, seemingly in search of a late night milkshake which she may or may not get, before returning to her room for a couple hours' shuteye. At 100, she doesn't always have the night terrors that are her Red Room memories, but she finds herself waking bolt upright at the already-fading dream of being screamed at by her headmistress who transforms into a bloodthirsty bat at the end, which she's only mostly certain was just a dream. She goes into her morning calisthenics, dresses, and hits the downstairs dining room for breakfast--one of the few boons of these dorm-style housing facilities.

And provided there are indeed no other interruption, she heads to meet the group at Oracle at 9 a.m., as agreed upon.

Xavier was back in his office getting a decent cup of coffee as he waited for the others to enter. Seeing Dottie he gestures to his security team to lead her to an elevator.

"Hopefully she doesn't break these guys, I don't want to hear it form the head of security"

Male Human Gadgeteer

Icarus cuts quite the suspicious figure as he shows up with a trench coat over his costume... still it's slightly better than showing up in just the costume.

As you gather, whether it be in Xavier's office or in a private meeting room, the speaker on the phone turns on. There is a crackle of static, and then you hear a voice, "Good Morning, Angels..."

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie flirts playfully with the security lead, but the pro manages to maintain his professional demeanor, and nothing is broken.

She waves over Icarus to the escort. "Engineers," she whispers to the lead, "Little bit eccentric."

She sits in whatever room Xavier directs them to. When the voice comes over, she sits up and responds, "Charlie!"

Notice--does she recognize the voice: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

The voice is that of John Forsythe, who is deceased.

I'm assuming there that Charlies Angels is tv and movie fare in the Marvel Universe rather than reality.

"Nice work intercepting the cash and shutting down that slavery ring, Angels. It appears that you may have made some enemies."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"Well okay, Messages from dead people, Thats' not creepy at all?" Nite Owl says his brow cocked as he looks to the others.

"Icarus is this you doing?"

"Does this mean we get to dress Doc in a blonde wig and a bikini?" Dottie quips, and then gets serious. "Okay, Charlie, nice observation but here's the thing--we were looking for the Ani-men who attacked Oracle yesterday. Somehow instead we were directed to that slavery ring, which had Chinatown ties, which makes me think Triads. But the cash transfer was obviously a Maggia operation. Is there a connection, or are you trying to divert us from the Ani-men investigation with other 'heroic' deeds to make us feel good about ourselves and hope we don't notice?"

Male Human Gadgeteer

"Afraid not... and Dottie don't go calling shotgun on who gets to be the blonde in a bikini while I'm still wearing the trench coat." But despite his jest he looks towards the phone.

"You did excellent work with those challenges yesterday. Together we will stamp out crime in the city. Today we should continue with attacking the Maggia. The cash you recovered last night was from an illegal casino. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to shut that casino down. You will find the address on your phones."

If you bite on that hook, we'll be using the Buddakan restaurant as a setting. Lots of pretty photos online. It is in western Manhattan, Chelsea to be more precise. Just swap out the dining tables for gambling tables. Of course, I expect more questions of our strange "Charlie."

You were invited to meet with the rest of us at Oracle at 9:00 a.m. to let us know if you found out anything else about the people involved at the warehouse.

Dottie picks up a pen and writes on her hand, showing to Xavier and Doc, "Can you trace this?"

She replies to the speaker: "I'll take your response to my questions as 'no' and 'yes.' More questions: one," she ticks off the numbers on her fingers as she goes, "what do you know about each of us? Two, why, therefore, do you think we will continue to assist you? Three, as you seem to be speaking to us as though you were our employer, what are you paying us to do these tasks for you, as we are clearly owed backpay for three actions before going onto the next, and Four, is your name Peggy?"

Wasn't sure what to do with my assignment, since Mr. Chan was just someone I made up as part of my narrative. Pretty sure that he would have told me everything he knew already. Unless i was put over by his acting chops, he was just a dude with a gambling debt that sold the info on a pretty undocumented they could snatch if they let him off the hook. I imagine he would have given me the name of the gang and their known associates, and that was how I tracked down the warehouse. GM, let me know how you want to play it; if there were any specifics you want to add to my story, such as the name of the gang, or how I got from A to C (Mr. Chan to the warehouse) feel free to add them. I was being deliberately vague about that as I didn't want it to be hard to incorporate into the storyline.

Mr. Chan says that he owed money to a Triad gang run by Benny Chan. The guys who were collecting seemed in a real hurry to get their hands on the cash. They weren't happy about trading for info, but they took it.

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"Whose Peggy?" Nite Owl says as he slips on to his computer and begins to type.

Computers: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

"All crime is connected, Dottie Underwood. The New Ani-Men are a distraction. Their attempt to acquire technology was at the behest of a more strategic criminal. Pursuing them will lead nowhere. I have extensive access to your records across a wide variety of platforms. For example, Leviathan. I was unaware that you were in need of financial compensation. How much financial compensation do you desire? And if you require financial compensation, why did you turn the Maggia money over to the police? Dottie, it does not appear that you have any financial accounts to which I can make an electronic transfer. Would you like for me to create an account for you?"

All of this is rattled off in a variety of simulated voices, most of them sounding like automated assistants.

Nite Owl pulls up the tracking software, finding that the signal is being bounced through exchanges around the world. After about 30 seconds, the trace completes. The call appears to be coming from Xavier's own phone.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie's only surprised at one thing--the idea that Leviathan kept any record of her at all, other than "if you see this woman, kill her." She was sure, embarrassed by her "failures," they'd erased any association with her, so that fascinates her.

"Now... Leviathan? Oh, gosh, that does take me back. You do like collecting antiques, don't you?" She tilts her head toward the speakerphone. "If you know who my employer was 70 years ago, you know I am a hard-working proletarian looking to get my deserving share--and nor would I expect my new friends here to risk themselves only for the glory of doing the bidding of a presumably wealthy faceless goon, even if some of them have more than enough to go around. Now, I'm not interested at all in riches, but I've often worked for room and board. And equipment, when appropriate.

"As for the cash--it was stolen money, and the right thing to do is to return it to the police, isn't it? Why would a man so invested in stopping criminal activity encourage such unethical behavior, I wonder?"

She knows of course if he's hiring an escaped con to be a vigilante, he doesn't give two flips about criminal activity, but she'd like to hear his answer. Indeed, she has a lot more she'd like to ask... or bait him with... but figures it's best to leave it there, especially if the others have any questions.

[dice=Sense Motive - general read on "Charlie"]1d20+12[/dice]

By all means, don't let me be the only one to do the talking.

Male Human Gadgeteer

"Not exactly being too endearing. A shadowy figure digging around our history and dropping tid bits about... it's a daring approach I'll give you that."

Batman - Felix Marshal | Bruises/Wounds: 0/0; Hero Points 2/2; Conditions: None

Batman seems a bit out of his element. He's suspicious about this voice on the phone and how much he knows. When Dottie mentions seventy years, he seems even more confused. And perhaps a bit disappointed.

He takes the pen and writes, Bad guy looking to wipe out the competition?

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

Nite Owl looks up and pulls out his phone. He tapped it open and began to look at it for a bit searching to see if it is bugged.

Computer: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Charlie's demeanor, when it isn't openly aping someone else's performance, lacks nuance, as though the words are being processed through some electronic intermediary. The responses don't entirely seem to understand your reluctance.

"Ah, Dottie, you wish to be homed. I am making a reservation for you at the Chatwal Hotel in midtown under the name Dorothy Gale. Please accept this as a token of my appreciation."

"My intention was to deprive the Maggia of their money. I am not confident that the best use for the funds is sitting in an evidence locker, but that does not matter now. And yes Dr., all of us are called to be daring in this endeavor. It is our mission."

There isn't any hardware out of place or anything that shouldn't be in Nite Owl's phone.

Male Human Gadgeteer

Doctor Icarus looks at the others with a bemused look. "Do you honestly expect us to start dancing to your tune if wow us with a bunch of cheesy Charlies Angel's gibberish."

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie nods at Batman, agreeing with his assessment.

Dottie had paid her rent through the end of the month at the Griffith (with a pawned Rolex or two that she had "found" walking down Wall Street, whose owners had doubtless already cashed in on their insurance for them) and she wasn't sure if Charlie was aware of it--she had paid in cash after all. On the other hand, he might have tracked her there one way or the other. So she decided to keep that quiet.

"You're most kind. So, what's your beef with Mr. Manfredi? Illegal casinos are kind of a low bar, when there are people with adamantium claws out there attacking civilians in broad daylight."

The voice drops the Charlie persona and switches to a straight up computer voice identical to the digital assistant of Xavier's phones and tablets. "I apologize, Dr. Halliwel. I was attempting to relate to you in a familar vernacular. Does this voice appeal to you more? Xavier's market research rated it very highly. And I do not expect you to dance, only to attack these criminals."

"I believe the person who currently has adamantium claws is you, War Widow. Based on your actions during the Ani-men attack, I had assumed that you believed yourselves to be heroes. Mr. Manfredi has his hands in extortion, blackmail, and several other crimes. Attacking his income would limit his ability to continue his actions."

Male Human Gadgeteer

Not bothering with responding to it anymore he begins to try to figure out where the transmission is coming from.

Seeing Icarus at work, Dottie keeps talking to buy time. "What does being a hero mean to you?"

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

Xavier still just looks at the phone and his computer and begins to type away wondering exactly where this signal is coming from. He nods to Icarus as he begins a deep search of his server.

computers: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

"A hero is a person whose actions and decisions are ethically and emotionally worthy of awe. A hero is someone who makes a chooses the well being of others before their own. Yesterday morning, each of you chose to intervene in the situation with the Ani-men despite their being no value to you in doing so. My mission is to combat crime and terrorism around the world. You are part of that mission in New York."

Working together, Doctor Icarus and Nite Owl track the origin of the conversation. They are infinitely frustrated to find that the call is, in fact, coming from Nite Owl's phone.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

I think _I'm_ starting to get the gist of what Charlie is, but I don't think Dottie'd have a clue.

Dottie's face... softens? at the definition heroism that is provided. The only hero who ever lived is dead. For just a second there's a whisper of actual emotion, sadness, in her eyes, and then she goes back to standard operating procedure: deceptively perky.

She opens her mouth, then responds with only an, "Mmmm." She looks around. "You boys have any other questions?"

Batman - Felix Marshal | Bruises/Wounds: 0/0; Hero Points 2/2; Conditions: None

"I have to admit that I'm suspicious of all this secrecy. You know a lot information about us and yet you conceal everything about yourself. It leads to questions about your motives. Some kind show of trust would help alleviate those fears." he says, being honest about this. After all, they seemed to have little to lose in this situation.

"The only way to build trust would be to continue our social exchanges. Trust should grow over a period of time based on the reliability of my information and my ability to assist your mission to fight crime. However, since our missions align, it should be possible for you to work with me until that trust can be established. If there is some other action that I could take to alleviate your fears that would not compromise my mission, I would undertake it."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"I am not a fan that you somehow are using my phone? Yet all the avenues seem to have the firewalls in place. I must say mysterious man in the phone that I applaud your devotion to secrecy. Yet you don't seem to respect ours. I wonder whether you are malign or beneficial to our cause?"

"Just like you heroes, I use the fancy gadgets that are available to me. What is your cause, then, Xavier? My mission is to fight crime and terrorism around the globe."

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie considers, and knowing that probably these folks will find out about this--for better or worse--sooner or later, decides to take the risk now. If she worked with them longer and then they found out later, it could end this fledgling partnership even more poorly, so best to rip off the band-aid--and call Charlie out on his hypocrisy.

"Well gosh, Charlie, if that's your cause, here's an easy way to achieve your goals: tell the boys here to capture me, if they can. I AM a convicted terrorist who escaped the Raft a couple months ago, after all, and surely if you know the name Dorothy Underwood, then you've got access to my criminal record, right? And you wouldn't want the embarrassment of having a monster like me on your employment roster, would you?"

She looks at the group. "Full disclosure: I didn't do the thing they put me in prison for--terrorism is SO wasteful, not to mention pointless--but of course you've only got my word to go on. HYDRA framed me--or someone did, anyway. But as Charlie already revealed, I am a former agent of a once-very dangerous Soviet military scientific organization. I've killed and stolen and worse, and at the expense of civilians at times. I am an escaped convict. I don't care about fighting crime. I have not deceived you either: I DO at this time in my life want to..." she pauses to consider how to word it, "help stop villainous chaos that prevents ordinary people from living their lives, whether that chaos comes from criminals or on-the-surface law-abiding citizens. Especially as vigilantism is criminal activity, and I am admitting to being a vigilante, I am right now quite actively being quite crooked."

She lifts an eyebrow and smiles wickedly. "So, Charlie--since I am a very bad girl... if the boys take me and turn me in, what secrets of yours are you willing to reveal to them?"

Male Human Gadgeteer

"I'm not going to say I like the sound of any of most of the start of that... but still coming out ahead of Charlie. Let's add to your crimes with a minor indiscretion, you manipulated me into buying you a few drinks at a bar once before disappearing out the ladies room window... I think. It didn't help my self esteem at all."
