Rasil Bathbone, Gnome Archaeologist (Bard) 1

Rasil has decided that adventuring in the wild isn't for him, and has turned his attention to the mysteries in Magnimar.

Rasil Bathbone:
Captain Percival offers Rasil a plump cushion for the chair to bring him to a comfortable height for conversation. Once the gnome is situated, he starts.

"I've heard of you, Mr. Bathbone, though I'm not sure if we've met or not. I see you mentioned on your application that you've done some work for the Watch already. Tell me, what was your most memorable moment working with the Watch."

Rasil's Reply:
The gnome strokes his mustache before saying, "A merchant in the Marches had inventory go missing from his warehouse mysteriously. A constable of the Watch was familiar with me, and asked if I could lend a hand."

Rasil dropped his hand to the chair's armrest and leaned forward before continuing, "I really know my way around Magnimar, you see, and so I was brought in to consult.

"Well, it turns out that some local thieves had dug into the warehouse from the sewers, and were using an empty crate--one that they'd cut open the bottom of--to hide that hole."

The gnome leaned back again. "It all came down to noticing the scuff marks around that crate. I understand the thieves were apprehended shortly after.

"It wasn't very exciting, but still, quite memorable for me."

Dwuręczny Wążdrań Half-elf Hexcrafter (Magus)1

Lady Tracy Shannon, daughter of Governor Dell Shannon. Aristocratic rogue and soon to be wizard. Human character by Darklighthitomi.

Response:

Removing his hat and settling into the chair opposite Captain Percival, the ranger begins: "It came to my attention while on a job in Leipstadt that your City Watch was in need of individuals with certain skills, which I just so happen to possess."

Shifting slightly closer to the table,
Perc. check on muffins/pastries 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26, Perc. check on Captain Percival 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
he continues:

"You see, Captain, life in Ustalav numbs people to what you might consider 'supernatural' occurrences to an extent. I understand that those types of occurrences are precisely the matters for which you're recruiting investigators. I can also assure you my tracking skills will far exceed your expectations. I come from a family of expert trackers, though I've strayed from their path as swamp stalkers and bog walkers in favor of a more cosmopolitan lifestyle. Never could stand the bugs anyway."
"As for my motivations for venturing so far afield? Let's just attribute my presence in your fair city to serendipity and fortunate circumstance. The tales of Magnimar's generous government employee benefits certainly didn't make leaving Ustalav any harder, either."
Reinhold chuckles.

Barin Orcbane reporting for duty

Simza's Reply:
Simza waited quietly in her seat in the small room, full of nerves and excitement. This was finally her opportunity to join the ranks of the watch, and while she was disappointed that these interviews were being held in the Pediment Building, rather than that monument which had so inspired her, but she was not dicouraged. It may not quite have been her lifelong dream but it had certainly become so after she had been cursed, and gifted by the whims of the gods. She took a pastry from the table but did little more than nibble at it occasionally beneath her veils, careful not to get crumbs on herself or otherwise ruin her appearance. She stared around at the other waiting applicants, wondering if some day soon she might get to work with them, a thought that made her smile.

When her name was at last called she stood hurriedly, before taking a moment to settle her heavy clothes around her and walking with a calm grace she didn't feel into the adjoining office. She seated herself lightly on the chair before the stern looking Captain's desk, and then almost fell off of it when he leaped up and bellowed out the door. Her flush was noticeable despite the veils as she settled herself again upon the chair, as was her condition; though fate had at least been kind enough to spare her brow, one of her eyes at times proved slightly lazy, or else developed a tic, which was likely not aided by her nervousness.

"Thank you sir." her soft voice emerged from behind the veils, which disguised, but not quite hid a slight rasp to her voice; a glance to the swiftly arrived assistand she hoped communicated a similar sentiment, and despite that it was hidden an upturning of the eyes showed her smile. She sipped lightly at the water as the Captain set it in front of her, her veils fine enough, and the girl having had enough practice that she was able to drink without shifting the veils at all. Several more sips followed as she sat in silence, nervously waiting as the Captain read her application.

She calmed a bit when the captain started the interview proper, though she was a bit surprised at how blatantly he stated some-or perhaps even most-Varisian's dislike of officials and the watch. "Well Sir, to be perfectly honest, it was not the watch that drew me in at first, so much as it's building. If I may ask a question of you, do you know the history behind the construction of the Arvensoar?" she asked, her tone polite, and while she didn't appear completely relaxed the girl seemed a deal more confident, her voice stronger now that the waiting was done.

Dwuręczny Wążdrań:
Captain Percival glances down at his sheet, looking slightly flustered. "So it's Dwur-...Dwury-...Dw-...uh, Mr. Wa-..., Waz-..., Mr. W. Welcome! It doesn't say here where you're from. From where do you hail, and what brings you to join the Magnimar City Watch?"

Big OM, Human(Shoanti/Varisian) fighter.

A friendly man working for the city watch, a former bouncer and dock worker looking for a way to give people the opportunities his parents had.

Current applicant compilation:

Rasil Bathbone: gnome bard
Dwuręczny Wążdrań: half-elf magus
Simza Caumlo: human oracle of life
Barin Orcbane: dwarf fighter
Krojun Hora: human fighter
Lady Tracy Shannon: human rogue/wizard
Grigory Reinhold: human urban ranger

It's an interesting mix so far.

Lady Tracy Shannon:
Captain Percival is polite and courteous as he waves Lady Shannon into his office. "My Lady. It is a pleasure to speak with you today. Most of the aristocracy tend to seek out commissions with the military, rather than the Watch. I apologize, I am not familiar with your family. I see you mentioned here that your father is the mayor of your town, but you didn't say which town. I know the mayors of Sandpoint and Turtleback Ferry, and neither is a Shannon. Not that it truly matters, I suppose. What's important is that you are here now, and seeking a position in our new special investigations unit. Tell me, what skills would you bring to this unit?"

Barin Orcbane:
Captain Percival offers the dwarf a small smile of familiar greeting when he opens his door to Barin, but a few lines of tension tug at the corners of his eyes. "Come on in, Mr. Orcbane. Please have a seat. First, I know it's not exactly why you're here, but I still want to keep you informed, we haven't had any worthwhile leads into your uncle's disappearance. We haven't given up hope, and all I can really say is that there's more going on here than one missing blacksmith."

He pauses, glancing at some papers, clearly stalling as he figures out exactly how to ask the next question. Finally he looks up and says, "I've already seen some of your skills, and know your tenacity, both good things in this line of work. What I honestly need to know from you, Mr. Orcbane, is if I give you this position, can I trust you to hold to it and the cases put before you, and not go AWOL on me with the single-minded determination to find your uncle? I need to know if I'm going to be putting your team members in danger by having a distracted dwarf with big weapons in their midst."

Krojun Hora:
Captain Percival offers Hora a small salute before beckoning him into the office beyond. "Officer. Please come in. Have a seat." Percival waits for the man to sit before continuing. "I have some very impressive performance reviews here, Officer, from your sarge. Good commendation of your combat skills, bravery, and several notes from your superiors on your ability to think things out and not resort to brute force when the cause for it is not there. Looking over these records, you seem on the fast track to Constable by the end of the year, and Sergeant within five. Why would you want to risk that shining career path to switch to a brand new, highly-scrutinized, and politically unpopular unit such as MSI?"

Rasil Bathbone:
Captain Percival nods as Rasil tells his story. "Yes, it's often details like that, details many Watchmen fail to notice, that can solve crimes. Any thug can chase down a suspect and beat their brains in, can't they?"

Grigory Reinhold:
"We have generous government employee benefits?" Percival asks, his face like stone. "I hadn't noticed. So you're here looking for a big pay check?" His tone doesn't say either way whether the captain thinks that's a good thing or not.

Simza Caumlo:
Percival looks taken aback by Simza's question, and shuffles papers for a few moments as he formulates a reply. "The Arvensoar? No, sorry, I know little of its history, other than that the stone for its construction had been quarried from the Irespan itself. But the Arvensoar is not a City Watch building. It's the main fortress for Magnimar's army. Are you sure it wasn't the military you wanted to apply to?"

Rasil to Captain Ilar Percival:
Rasil smiles. "Now captain, those 'thugs' also perform a valuable service. After all, they've got longer legs than I do! And sometimes chasing a suspect is necessary. I'd like to think that we all have a part to play in insuring Magnimar remains a safe environment."

The gnome strokes his mustache again. "Surely even 'unusual' cases must call for both brains and brawn?"

Rasil Bathbone:
"Indeed. Especially the unusual cases. Part of the requirement for any team member with a unit such as this is that they be able to fulfill both functions."

Percival reaches beneath his desk and thumps a rather large crossbow on top. Rasil can't help but notice that it's both loaded and pointed at him. "So I'm curious. What would be your plan to think your way out of stopping me from filling you with holes?" Percival picks up the crossbow, his finger near the trigger.

Barin's answer:
For a moment it seems Barin may choke hearing the captain's words, his face becomes bright red, his hair amost bristling. Then with visible effort, the dwarf composes himself. When he spokes his tone is icy cold:"I'm a dwarf of the Orcbane clan. We pride ourselves with the quality of our trade and workmanship. In the long history of our clan there have been very few people who questioned that. You don't know me, so you have the right to ask that kind of question before deciding about giving me a job. So know this: if you give me a job I'll se it through, or I'll die trying. It's true I need to find my uncle, but as long as I have your word that endeavour to be one of your first priorities I've got no problems about working for you and the city of Magnimar. Of course I'll want to be informed about the investigation on my uncle's abduction, but I'll also do my duty!"

Barin Orcbane:
As the red clears from Barin's vision, he sees Percival slowly remove his hand from beneath his desk. He nods as he takes the dwarf's oath of loyalty. "As I said, there's more going on than a simple disappearance. I can't promise you that you will end up on the investigation yourself, but I can promise you that it is far from closed, and we are no where near giving up."

"So other than smashing heads, what skills would you bring to a unit such as MSI?"

Rasil's response:
Wide eyed, Rasil said, "Why would I want to think my way OUT of stopping you? Shouldn't I be thinking of a way to stop--WHAT'S THAT!?" He exclaimed while looking over the Captain's right shoulder.

Rasil uses his spell-like ability (as they have no noticeable components) of ghost sound to make a loud cracking noise, like the wall was breaking.

Rasil then dives to the floor in an attempt to put the chair between himself and the crossbow.

Rasil Bathbone:

Will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Percival chuckles, and Rasil hears the sound of the crossbow being put away. "Very nice, indeed, although if I may suggest, next time, something more believable like a knock at the door might be more appropriate. Please forgive my rather unorthodox questioning. I beg of you to return to your seat and I promise no more theatrics."

Grand Lodge

Reinhold's response:

"Benefits of any kind beat scrounging for work tracking down necromancers and investigating mysterious disapperances all over Ustalav," the foreigner explains. The benefit of knowing I have a steady source of work and income centered in Magnimar rather than following rumors and whispers from Vieland to Caliphas would be enough to make my trip worthwhile, not that I wouldn't gladly accept the hyphothetical 'big pay check' you mentioned..."

Grigory Reinhold:
"Well, when you get yours, let me know so I can expect mine, too. So you have experience investigating mysterious disappearances? Tell me about it."

Rasil to Percival:
Rasil sheepishly picked himself up off of the floor, and returned to his seat. "I'll keep that in mind, Captain."

After settling back in, he added, "So, what's next?"

Rasil Bathbone:
"Next? I'd love for you to tell me what skills you have besides keen eyes and gnomish magic tricks. I'd also like to hear about what you did for a living before throwing in you lot with the Magnimar City Watch."

Grand Lodge

Grigory to Percival:

I erroneously used a 25-point buy instead of 20, fixed my stats accordingly by dropping DEX by two points and adjusting associated skills.

"Generally the disappearances were straight-forward enough... 'Little Susie was out playing and wandered into the woods, my husband went looking for her and he's been gone for several days.' Of course Little Susie turns out to be a changeling lured away by hags -- shocker, I know -- and the rescue part of the 'search and rescue' comprises the majority of the mission."
"I still preferred those types of jobs to the alternative,"
the ranger mutters, his gaze briefly shifting to the floor and his right hand making a subtle spiraling gesture over the left side of his chest. "I don't know how familiar you are with the lore and legends of Ustalav, Captain, but let's just say that by the time I was called in to investigate many of those disappearances there wasn't much left to rescue at the end of my search besides my own hide."
"Luckily I learned early on to sort out the details before traipsing off after my quarry... an approach some of my kin could stand to adopt, but that's really here nor there."

The Lady's Response to the Captain:
She enters and sits, then, politely but proudly, responds "Marbleton, a quarry town at the south end of the Fogscar Mountains. We have the only green marble quarry in Varisia."

She studies the captain, then his office as she speaks.
Perception check, the captain 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Perception check, the office 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Does she know of the captain's family?
Knowledge Nobility 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

"I am currently studying wizardry, in the military I would not have much time for such studies, however, in the watch I will be able to continue my studies. Besides, this group you are forming will be focused on the supernatural which I find fascinating.

As far as what I can provide, I have already studied much arcane lore and I have quite a talent for noticing things others do not want noticed. I studied leadership and tactics under Former Major Brushgarden. I can also go places where commoners would be unwelcome and I have had plenty of experience dealing with angry merchants, which I suspect is a common thing for the watch.

By the way, you said you know Kendra Deverin? How is she doing lately? It has been a few years since I last spoke with her."

Rasil's Response:
"Well, I've already told you that I know my way around Magnimar, so I'll say that I'm pretty good at talking to people. I can also be quite sneaky when need be. Plus, I know a little bit about magic, and can even put people to sleep or heal minor injuries.

"I've also learned some tricks from a 'locksmith' friend of mine, so I understand the basics of putting a trap out of commission--" Rasil paused for a moment before continuing, "or opening a lock. At least in theory."

The gnome stroked his mustache again. "As for prior work? Well, I grew up wanting to be an explorer, but my first time out didn't go so well. So instead, I just stuck to doing odd jobs around town, mostly finding lost items for people, that sort of thing.

"Lately, I've been tapped to help with the Watch, mostly just a few constables that know me, on a freelance basis. The last few times actually scored me some silvers, but I find myself intrigued by the mystery involved. I guess I enjoy puzzles!" he finished with a smile.

Rasil Bathbone:

"I see," Percival says as Rasil confesses lock-picking knowledge. When Rasil finishes, Percival opens a drawer in a cabinet behind him and pulls out a small chest. Fiddling with a few things out of view behind his desk, he plops the chest down on the desk, and says, "Open that." Fishing inside his own coat, he pulls out a set of masterwork thieves' tools. "In case you didn't bring your own."

Simza Caumlo (revised from earlier):

Percival looks taken aback by Simza's question, and shuffles papers for a few moments as he formulates a reply. "The Arvensoar? No, sorry, I know some of its history: the stone for its construction had been quarried from the Irespan itself, resting spot of angels, Magnimaran-Varisian unity, stuff like that. But the Arvensoar is not a City Watch building. Sure, we have a garrison of Watchmen there, and use the Summit-Shore shortcut like the army does, but it's mainly a fortress for Magnimar's army. Are you sure it wasn't the military you wanted to apply to?"

Simza and the Captain:
"As has half the city." she agreed to the Captain's observation of it's building materials, a smile hidden behind her veils. When the Captain asked if she was sure she had meant to join the watch, not the military Simza just nodded. "Yes sir, but as mentioned on my form and that you've likely noticed yourself, I have a certain affliction that would likely preclude such service. My hope is that it will not entirely eliminate my chances of serving the city."

"You see it was my affliction that inspired me to apply, however indirectly. When it first struck I was confined to my bed, and so I spent many hours staring out over the city, and grew curious of it's landmarks of which I had a good view. My brother obtained for me a book about the founding of Magnimar, and in it was the tale about the construction of the Arvensoar." she explained, a bit disappointed when he simply brushed over the story she had found so inspiring. She had been all ready to recount it for him if necessary but she decided to simply push on. ”The story of Ordellia Whilren and the spire inspired in me a desire to one day walk and serve within the walls that grew up there. I’ve learnt since that the watch is based elsewhere but even so, the desire to serve never left me. My body is frail and I am not skilled in fighting, but I think a position in your new unit will provide that opportunity for serving this city, and perhaps a chance to walk the halls of the Arvensoar one day. I have studied hard the last years, learning medicine and alchemy, and have been graced with the divine ability to heal, and experience and interpret visions. I am young but eager and I hope that you will accept my application.” the impassioned young Varisian leant back then, realizing she had been edging forward in her seat, and took several calming breaths, waiting nervously to see what the Captain thought.

Grigory Reinhold:

"Hopefully, you won't find any hags within the walls of Magnimar. How much experience do you have in large cities such as this one?"

I noticed that, but wasn't going to say anything until if or when Grigory was selected. :)

Lady Tracy Shannon:

Tracy doesn't notice anything about the captain or his office which suggest he's anything but what he seems: a career officer, probably of common birth. She's never heard of the Percival family.

"The same for me. I haven't seen Kendra since she moved to Sandpoint, and the troubles with her town keep her there, unfortunately. I understand the Sandpoint Heroes brought her here with them once last year, for a private conference with the Lord-Mayor, but she didn't have time to reconnect with old friends. I'm told she's well, however."

"So you're studying wizardry. At the Stone itself, or one of the other smaller wizardry schools here in Magnimar?"

Krojun response:

Krojun takes a seat after returning the Captain's salute.

After stroking his chin for short while he answers Good question sir, I think I am just tired of being told to leave cases open just because they are "special". After a brief silence he continues, My parents moved here to start their life together, everyone should be safe here. Pausing shortly and winking, Besides it sound fun

Simzi Caumlo:
Percival nods. "Yes, I can see that you are not well. Divine inflictions such as yours are not common, but I have heard of the phenomenon before. My primary concern would be that if I did give you a spot on this team, field work would still be expected, in fact, required. You may find yourself in the middle of a melee, possibly magical. Can you handle yourself in such a situation? How could you contribute?"

Krojun Hora:
"Fun?" Percival asks, his face dead pan and not indicating either way if he thinks that's a good answer or not. "I can certainly understand the frustration that must come from not being able to close cases because you lacked the resources. Tell me about some of those cases that got labeled 'special'."

Barin Orcbane:
Barin seems sincerely puzzled by the question:"Other than... well I can get people to talk... after a fashion. Weapons are an hobby of mine, so I know a lot about how to use them, and I can help teaching. And I know my way around dungeons and underground locales. Besides that I won't shy away from an arrow directed to a camerade... I can break heads... if needed. But I also know how to take a blow. And besides all that... I don't give up, period."

Rasil to Percival:
"Well, hmm. Those are mighty nice tools. Much better than what I've got. I'll use them."

Rasil stood and cracked his knuckles, while examining first the chest, and then the tools. He then carefully set to work on the lock.

Rasil uses his Disable Device +6, +2 for masterwork thieves' tools. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

Edit: If that wasn't good enough, Rasil will try again. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Edit: That was worse: I'm going to use his racial Eternal Hope ability for an automatic re-roll (must use new result). 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Edit: Third time (as the re-roll doesn't count). 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

I'll stop now... Apparently the dice roller doesn't like me. :P

The Lady Speaks:
"I am studying at the Stone of the Seers, though I do spend time talking to wizards at some of the others on occasion."

Having looked around she relaxes a bit, now just watching the captain.

Captain Ilar Percival:

"Certainly different." Krojun elaborates and continues, "Two cases spring to mind.
The first one was just weeks after I joined the Watch. One of the girls from my former work was killed, sadly it happens in her profession. However it was gruesome she was literately torn to piece, her chamber looked like an animal had been butchered. Her last client had been a minor noble from Vista. We were told that he was ill when we came to ask questions and denied access. The case was closed the same day, however I learned from one of the patrons of "The Salty Rose", a servant, that a cleric had visited a there were rumours about a disease or curse.
The second was more recently. I was approached by a beggar from the shadow, he was clearly frightened, babbling about some sort of monster by his usual sleeping spot. My partner and me decided to give it a look and walked back with him, where we were attacked. At first it looked like humans, but now I can't be sure, perhaps they had the plaque or leprosy, they sure looked sick. One thing is certain that inquisitor sure saved our hides. He ordered us to leave it alone and the brass agreed."
Sadden by the memories of his friends demise he paused.

Simza and the Captain:
Simza's nerves abated once more as the interview continued, glad that the captain was willing to continue the interview. It was proving to be something of an emotional roller-coaster for the young girl despite how brief it had been so far.

"I am prepared to fight to defend the city and my fellow watchmen, I have some small skill with a sling and have practiced with a few weapons, mostly simple ones such as a mace and morningstar. I have also mastered a spell to enhance simple stones to strike harder whether thrown or slung."

"My primary contribution however would be more in the nature of magical protection, enhancement, and healing-both magical and mundane, including the ability to channel positive energy similarly to a cleric. As I mentioned before I have some ability as a seer, which can provide me with some incite in battle and out, and though it is currently limited to circumstances in which I will be involved in within the next day, I hope that my abilities will increase as I gain experience with, and grow more accustomed to the duties and tasks required of me."

Grand Lodge

Reinhold to Percival:
Scanning the Captain's demeanor and shifting slightly in his chair, Grigory runs his hand through his dark hair and begins.
"Growing up near Karcau, I made frequent explorations into the city as a youngster. After leaving home, the majority of my time was spent in Karcau and later, Lepidstadt. Neither city can match Magnimar in size. My travels did occasionally take me to my homeland's larger settlements, Caliphas and Ardis, but never for more than a few weeks at a time. To be honest, it may take me a few days to get my bearings and familiarize myself with 'alternate routes' through the city, but after that initial adjustment period I'm confident I'll be as comfortable here as any native son."

Dr. Alex Penela, Human Expert (some "girl" who is interested in finding causes of deads without magic when possible)

Feel free to shoot me and my fetishes out of the topic if you want. (Dr. Alex Penela)

Dwuręczny Wążdrań's Reply:
I've had it butchered worse than that, but....Drań is just fine, Captain. He pronounces it just as it's written. A flash of a grin dances across his face as he says this. I most recently hail from Riddleport, a fact I keep tucked in my tunic if I can. I came to Magnimar as sellsword, perhaps to even peddle a spell or two, but as I was searching for opportunities, you're name was on everyone's lips. Even those that openly loathe you say that you're a fair judge of character. I admire that in others...an even, un-biased worldview. I feel I could keep things balanced here under such a leader.

Lantern Lodge

Altered my char, I missed the fact that i need a +1 BAB to take proficiency with a whip, so i changed that feat to dodge.
why do i need a +1 anyway? doesn't make sense, but its there.

Lantern Lodge

The Lady continues:
"I figure the divination spells will be helpful to the MSI though I study many other magics as well , that is also another reason why I am joining, my father pays so much for the school that I do not much "spending" money to use for some experiments and crafts I would like to try."

She looks around particularly at the desk,, looking not for out of place things but for things that tell her about the captain, does he have family pictures, paintings drawn by a child, particular cigars, display cases, is there a window, etc
perception, doubt I need it but just in case.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Also, she is looking for how well the interview is going(does he seem like he is simply entertaining a noble or is he seriously considering her?)
sense motive 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Barin Orcbane:
"No, you do have tenacity, no doubts here. So is that the role you see yourself fulfilling with this group? Protecter, motivator, and head-smasher?"
