the town of Torch has put out the call for adventures and brave souls. The bright purple flames that erupt from the center of town, power its skymetal forges, and give the town it's name have been extinguished. The town council has sent numerous expeditions in to the strange metal ruins found below the town, but none have returned. As you answer the call for more souls, you are told to meet at the town hall. There you are greeted by a old dwarven woman, her white hair secured in looping braids behind her worn face. Gold earrings and rings are matched with a blue and gold dress that barely hides the muscles that years of working the forges have given her. She leans on a bright warhammer, clearly also made of some skymetal. She looks over the newest would be saviors and mutters, "We may be scrapping the bottom of the barrel here" and then louder and more directly at you "Ahh, so glad you could all make it, as Torch is in need of your help. Tell me who you are and then we can get down to the business of what we need done and what the pay is."
Fal the Reborn
'I may not have ears like you, but I can still hear...' Fal mused internally. No, no... be nice. These are the folks dad and Val have to work with. The least he can do for them is to be polite to the other folks around town. "Good to see you too, councilwoman..." Fal forced out, though he clearly wanted to add something else to the topic.
The kobold looked up at the others assembled, assessing them for a moment before smiling and nodding. "...I appreciate you guys signing up to help me. I know it's dangerous, but it means a lot to me... name's Fal Baine." At the mention of pay, Fal, frowned, shaking his head. "I don't care about the pay. I just want to find dad and get him back to safety. If we can find out why the fires have gone out, all the better. But..."
Gringe

Gringe smiles at the Dwarf with a toothy grin." I am Gringe!" she says. she then begins pulling several of the bones hanging off of her and introducing them as well. "This is Salli, this is Grein, this is..."
Gringe continues to introduce the bones, but seems to be doing it more for herself than to actually introduce them.
seeing Fal, Gringe jumps in joy. "oh, you a kobold too! you no need to worry if you die, i Keep your bones nice and clean"
she returns to naming off each of her bones.
Teodoriga
The barefooted android woman entered the town hall, scythe in hand. A wooden holy symbol of a songbird hung from her neck while a choker made from mistletoe and holly was wrapped around her neck.
She paused for a few moment to straighten her loincloth and then walked up beside the kobold named Fal. She hadn't seen the kobold in a long time and a small smile crept up before quickly fading.
"I understand you wish to reward us but such actions are not necessary. I was...raised in Torch by Khonnir Baine just like Fal here. I have heard that there were troubles here but I did not realize how severe they were until now. We will do all that we can to help you. I do wish to ask if Khonnir Baine is alright."
Gorin Ironblind
"I appreciate that two of the others feel that we need not be rewarded for this endeavor and I would love to offer my services for free but... blood, steel and powder do not come cheap, as you yourself well know Elder!" the broad Gunslinger bowed his head with respect to the Dwarven woman.
"I have worked the forges here and have worked the forges of distant lands and all of them are fueled by gold. I am glad to be home, though my parents are not here to welcome me. I had hoped to take up their trades and work at the Torch but now... this is a bad time and we need to look in to it. Pay the cost of the munitions I use and that will do for me. Pay me enough to craft a newer, better weapon and I will do anything you ask!" He smiled as he idly toyed with the skymetal torc he wore around his neck.
"That is of course if my employer will allow it..." Gorin said dryly, glancing over at Maxwell, arching one thick bushy eyebrow, causing his goggles to tilt comically atop his head.
Maxwell P. Silver
Maxwell was standing almost behind Gorin, Close enough to the entrance he came in from to make a quick break, but not so far as to seem out of place from the group of adventurers.
As the two kobolds and Android introduced themselves, his eyes betrayed sheer terror, and his lips were pursed tightly.
He finally bent down after Gorin's introduction to have a muttered conversation with his Dwarven friend;

"Right, well then, lets get started. As some of you know, my name is Dolga, and I've been put in charge of the situation, in that I am the only one who wanted to deal with it directly. It’s been eight days since the flames that give our town its name have gone out, but only seven since the first explorers braved the new tunnels Khonnir discovered. Khonnir himself led his second foray into the caves just a couple of days ago—and he has yet to return. There’s an underwater passage connecting them to Weeping Pond. Khonnir noticed a large number of human footprints on the pond’s banks—he was there the day the fires went out testing the water to ensure it hadn’t suddenly grown more toxic—and he realized that a sizable group of people had entered the pond but had not emerged. We need you to enter the caves, rescue or retrive Khonnir, and find out what you can about why the flames have gone out. Have any questions before you get to work?" Dolga looks willing hopefully at the five adventures before her.

perception(to detect Max): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Gringe doesn't stop naming her bones...
noticing the strange man, she turns to max. "hello! What a 'dread-cult-plot'?" she stares at the man with wide eyes for a moment, but turns away before he could respond.
she looks at the dwarf woman and in a strange tone she asks:" do we get supplied with any equipment before we set out? at least a fraction of our pay? or do you have so little faith in our party that you won't even bother?" her voice is strangely smooth compared to before. she stares at the dwarf, pressuring her with a gaze intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
her gaze is intense, and her dragon-like features are strangely acute. the bones hanging of her seem to gaze our of their eyeless sockets and the sound of bone-on-bone is as soft as morning wind-chimes.
Gringe

Gringe turns and looks at the Android. "I mean no harm. I only want a bit of insurance. I'm no good at talking to people" Gringe blinks twice and smiles dumbly. "Gold is glittery, shiny and sweet, helps buy drink and pleasure." her voice has returned to the raspy tone of a kobold. she mutters incoherently to herself.
must stay me, others not nice...others not nice
Teodoriga
Teodoriga was a bit puzzled by the female kobold's words.
"I am unsure of how gold can buy you pleasure. Isn't pleasure something that is physical and usually involves the sensations of two or more individuals? Gold can most certainly buy one nourishment and refreshments but using gold to purchase something that can merely be gained through simply asking another seems illogical to me."
The android was trying to figure out what the kobold meant.
Gringe
|
Gringe giggles at Teodoriga, "silly, no-bone robot! pleasure is drink, and a good bottle, and bones... she turns to her large salamander, sligi. "yes, Sligi i will tell her that too... eventually. she has no bones right now..."
the cave salamander stares at Gringe with a blank expression.
Teodoriga
"I'm afraid you're mistaken. Androids do in fact have bones, just not the way you're familiar with. Still, we are able to eat and drink and even well, have pleasure like organics. Still, I'm puzzled as to why you believe drink is the only form of pleasure. I was under the impression that pleasure involved...physical mating for lack of better words."
At the mention of the word robot, the Druid's face turned into a frown.
"Again you are mistaken: androids are not robots. We are, in a way, a perfect merging of both the organic and mechanical."
Gringe
|
Gringe glances up at Teodoriga. the look on her face is confused.
" I am kobold. Only Kobold i find can 'mate with' it him" Gringe points at Fal. "but me no like his bones, too... not bones" gringe then pokes Teodoriga's leg. "you right, drink not only pleasure... treasure is too... I think we need pay attention to dwarf lady. quit talking about... 'mating' at this time..."
gringe turns back to Sligi "shut up Sligi. she not need know that!
the cave salamander is eating a nearby fern...
Gorin Ironblind
Gorin made to answer Max reassuringly before the Kobold addresses the man. He stares at the Kobold as she then proceedes to threaten the Dwarven woman. He was about to speak up then before the interesting Android lady spoke and eventually he gave up as they began to discuss pleasure and bones and everything else. He sighed before shaking his head and looking at Max.
"The man who is missing might know something about the plot Max, if there is one. We should find him and ask. I'll keep you safe as ever. And if I don't, well we have our escape plan, right?"
With that Dorin stands and bows to the Dwarven woman. "Your leave then Elder to go prepare?"
Maxwell P. Silver
Maxwell is almost hypnotized by the Kobold and Android's argument about ...bones. He snaps himself out of it, and addresses the councilwoman.
"Well, Dolga-" He squints "-If that is your real name- it seems my lifelong desire to not die and my current mission are at an impasse. You may be unaware of an even greater danger currently plaguing your city!"
Maxwell side-steps from behind Gorin, much like a crab, and closer to the dwarf ahead. His legs are long and skinny, giving him a gangly and clumsy sense of movement. With one arm tucked behind his back, he does not let this detract from the seriousness of his speech;"You see, I arrived at torch, not with the intent of re-igniting these torches, but because of foul rumors in my investigations, that the DREAD CULT OF XALGHUL have set up shop in your fair city!
"So, surely it can be no coincidence that my investigations into their foul schemes would lead me to your city in the midst of a mysterious tragedy-"
He whips around, coat billowing behind him, to point a slender finger at one half of the group "-Or that these three, who I believe are HIGHLY SUSPECT, would show up to 'save the day'!? But- My man Gorin is correct. It seems our objectives might be intertwined! Unfortunately, I have important business in the city! So, if I am to go on this mission, I will need in my employ some sort of squire, to act in my absence! I'm sure you can spare man or woman to run simple errands?"
Gorin Ironblind
Gorin smiled apologetically at the Council woman, shaking his head and sighing before turning to Maxwell."But wait... Max, who can we really trust? Anybody the Elder assigns to help you could be part of the plot. No, safer by far if you and I run our own errands, hey? Don't worry lad. I'll carry your stuff for yah and all."
Fal the Reborn
Teo... it was good to see a familiar face. He hadn't been with Khonnir long before she left, but he knew she was just as much part of the family as he was. His inclination to give her a hug was squashed when he remembered that, being an android, she might be susceptible to his powers... better to not chance it and risk hurting her.
Fal tilted his head somewhat dumbfounded at the discussion between the other kobold and Teo, but the weird investigator, Maxwell, was an even stranger sight... and as for his bodyguard, the dwarf... well, he seemed sensible. But the kobold folded his arms, tilting his head a bit and closing his eyes.
"I remember dad talking about his concern that the pond might be toxic... but he never mentioned footprints." No doubt he didn't want to worry him or Val... even so, he would've liked to know. "However... that would be the first place to check out. We'll need a center of operations. Dad's place should be good. Would let me check on Val regularly too... I'm sure she won't mind. Don't load up on supplies just yet. Going too far in is dangerous. Better to scout ahead, make regular returns, assess the state of the ruins and once far enough in, set up a base of operations inside. That way we can fall back if needed and recover, as well as avoid damaging anything we retrieve. We should move now, while the day is with us. Operating at night has it's benefits, but risks as well."
Fal blinked as he felt himself rattling off a list of procedure they should follow. He... he wasn't sure how, but it came so naturally to him. As if he'd done this hundreds of times before. But... he'd never gone down into the ruins, not even with Khonnir... and Khonnir never talked about his process of making expeditions.
...how did he know all this?
Gringe

Gringe turns to max again and smiles. " I hope we can become good friends!" the bones hanging from her rattle as she says this. she then turns to Gorin, " your friend crazy"
Maxwell P. Silver
Max looks at Gorin, his eyes wide and angrily stern as he says through gritted teeth "Gorin, I must INSIST we get a THIRD PARTY to go on this PARTICULAR ERRAND." He gives a subtle nod (well, subtle for Max) to try and indicate there was something more to this request.

Dolga sighs, the says "we gave what supplies we had to the previous expeditions so we have little to offer except the reward, 3000 gold coins to each of those who bring back Khonnier safely. I would suggest using his inn as a base of operations, so you can keep an eye on Val as well, poor girl. Finally, our cleric of Brigh has agreed to cast a spell to allow you to breath underwater for a time, so you may access the caves."
Gringe
|
Gringe turns back to Dolga, "Oh, good! Water-breath helps a lot to get to caves underwater. I think sligi needs spell too, but he salamander so may not need it." she pauses for a moment and looks at sligi as if he's speaking.
the salamander belches as he finishes his fern.
"that's what i was thinking!" gringe shouts loudly. Sligi so smart... what of the water being deadly? I don't want bones to get hurt..."
Fal the Reborn
Fal nodded, smiling. "Agreed... not that she isn't a tough one herself. But it would make me feel better. It's not a question of room, just... we don't want to take over everything." Fal quirked an eyebrow at Maxwell, but just presumed her was being... uhm, strange. Satisfied with his own goals, Fall headed for the door, waiting to lead the way back to the inn if needed.
Teodoriga
Teodoriga nodded in agreement with Fal.
"I'm also concerned about both Val and Khonnir, as well. I believe we should check on Val to make sure she is alright. I fear foul and wicked things are setting things in motion."
She eyed the human named Maxwell, puzzled by his peculiar behavior.
"I believe good sir," the android says to Maxwell, "that whatever your goals are here, it might be beneficial to you to aid us as our goals might be connected and resolving both will help everyone, yourself included."
The druid also looked at the dwarf as well, but couldn't figure out anything to say.

The Foundry Tavern is dead as you arrive, a strange state for one of the most popular drinking halls in Torch. The wood walls of all three buildings, the tavern, the foundry, and home of Khonnier, are all slightly damp from a past storm, but of more concern is the screaming of a young woman coming from around the back of the tavern, and the sound of wood being broken.

Upon hearing Val screaming, the mostly emotionless Druid's face is covered with fear and terror for the safety of her older sister. As she enters the tavern, she spots the strange robot.
"Careful! It seems we have an uninvited guest," the android warns the others.
Fal the Reborn
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Fal was glad to be home, even if the place was quiet. Without Khonnir, the place simply wasn't as lively... but his thoughts were shattered as he heard Val scream from around back. "VAL!!!" The kobold was instantly off and running towards the shout around the building, skidding to a halt as he spied the robot, snarling and baring his fangs.
His instincts kicked in as his only concern was drawing the thing away from Val, wherever she was. "HEY! You rusted hunk of scrap! Pick on someone your own size!" Picking up a nearby rock, Fal hurled it at the machine, hoping to grab it's attention and lure it his way... not that he had a plan for what to do after that, but...
Not sure if we can make combat rolls yet, but I'm guessing I'd need a throw to see if I hit the thing with the rock... which I think is an improvised weapon, so... yeah.

Gorin follows Max and the rest of the group, even though the Dwarven elder had given him next to nothing and no real incentive to do so. He could sell his talents anywhere, for more than 3000gp. The woman barely acknowledged him or his partner, or anyone else for that matter. It was like she was some sort of wooden puppet just sticking to the facts. It probably had to do with the loss of the man and the stress she was under from the torch going out. He could forgive her that.
Anyway... as he stood there, staring at this weird metal contraption, he sighed before swinging his gun towards the robot and sighting down its barrel. "Don't worry lass, Gorin will save her!"

The strange white construct turns towards you, screeching. Gorin's bullet dents its shell but fails to penetrate, as does Gringe's rock. The sound of the gun shot reverberates throughout the air, temporary covering up Val's voice. As sound returns you hear her say "Fal, Teo, so gald to see you. You have to stop that thing, it went crazy as soon as I got the power on." The crossbow bolt fired by Maxwell slices into the shell of the robot and several of the lights go out, and the arms seem to be moving slower. The robot begins to approach the party, closing to within ten feet of Fal. It seems to be saying something in a strange language. The side of the tavern that the machine had been dismantling groans but seems to be holding up, though the wall will need to be replace. You see a flash of blonde hair as Val rushes out of the building and dashes behind the foundry, taking cover.

On contact, the the machine will likely start to break and crack under his touch, trying to maintain as much direct physical contact with it as possible. As lighting strikes the strange machine, it groans and ceases it movements. Val leaves her hiding spot and grabs on to Teo in a running hug. "Thank you so much, I'm not sure what set it off, but I couldn't get it to stop" She brushes some dust off herself, and cranes her neck to look at her adopted siblings new friends. "So who are these folks? Are they going to help you and Fal find father? If so I guess they'll need a place to stay, but might need a little dusting" She motions back to the tavern, as the dust from the robot's rampage begins to settle. "Anything else you need? Otherwise please hurry, I'm worried about dad"

Maxwell's eyes narrow as he tries to get a read on the woman who just walked out before them. He does not lower his crossbow.
"So, you three- he indicates towards Fal and Teodoriga as well "-seem to go way back. BUT, truth be told, I don't trust any of you as far as I can throw you."

Walking over to the damage done by the robot, Fal starting placing his claws on things, as they slowly started to reassemble themselves. (Constant castings of Mending to fix things up.)
As he worked, Fal's fringes perked up, looking back at Maxwell with a smile... and a quirked brow. "Dad adopted us all. Val first, then Teo, and then he found me in the ruins below a good while back. Teo left to continue her work, but I stayed with dad and Val. He helps run the town, really smart man."
At the questions, he titled his head, trying to recall if anything weird had happened before... "...I don't think so. Then again, I usually stay in the back. My abilities and... well, everything, kinda scare people, and I don't want to drive away customers."

Gringe looks at Maxwell. you possibly throw Kobold very easy. we very lite... only around 50 lbs Gringe smiles and picks her crossbow bolt up off the ground.

Teo smiled a bit and returned Val's embrace. Occasionally the android displayed signs of emotion which she always wondered if such emotions were a connection to her past.
Teo nodded in agreement with Fal saying, "Yes that is true. Although I never did like the fact that you stayed in the back out of sight as you contributed just as much as Val and I did. But yes father did train us well. I do hope we find him. I shudder to think of what he has encountered below Torch. I do regret leaving now, even though I had left with father's blessings."
She cocked her head a bit in puzzlement at the female kobold, trying to understand what Gringe was saying.
Gorin Ironblind
Gorin arched an eyebrow at the female Kobold and nodded towards Max, "You aint seen his arms if you think he could throw 50 pounds."
He turned to the young woman and inclined his head to her, "Well lass, it is a good thing you are safe. Do you mind if I take a look at that there automaton? I have a bit of a way with metal. I might find nothin but I'd like ta look at least."

After catching up with Val, the cleric of Brigh for Torch arrives, ready to cast water breathing upon the group. He leads you all to the shore of the Black Hill lagoon. "Brigh, maker goddess, please give these brave heroes the ability to travel beneath the waves and find what ale's our city." Finishing this prayer, he touches each of you. You can feel the magic inside you. "The spell will last you a day, and then I will have to cast it again. Please be quick.". With that he motions to the lagoon, and you descend into the water. After a short swim you arrive in a cavern. Dampness hangs in the air of this cave, condensing into heavy moisture on the slick, stone walls. The calm, dark waters wind around to the east up north, along a stony, soot-scarred beach. A five-foot-high ledge sporting several stalagmites rises to the east, beyond which a low-ceilinged cave beckons.

Gringe slides out of the water atop her cave salamander Sligi, she takes a deep breath and smiles. Smells like home, she sighs.

Fal stood up from his work, smiling at Teo and bowing his head. "I appreciate that... but I don't mind. I think I do my best work out of sight."
Havig a chance to chat and reassure Val that everything would be alright, Fal followed the others out to the water and once able to breath, followed alongside them into the caves. Clambering onto the inner shores of the cave, Fal took a good look around, assessing them place for all the possible ways to secure it.
"Hrm... we should set to the side so we are not caught between either the water or the caves, should anything come or go. An alcove would be helpful, we could set up a defense there if needed. But let's scout ahead slightly. Anything out of sight would be helpful." His yellow eyes pierced through the darkness, as his mind once again questioned how he knew what to do so quickly.
A sense of deja vu crept over him. He had done this before. Not this place exactly, but this delving into ruins. Perhaps he... dreamed it? Somehow?

Maxwell sloshes out of the water, mortified at a breast pocked filled with soggy, ruined cigars. He desperately tries to light one up, but it wilts pathetically between his fingers. He discards it.
Already irritated, he side-eyes the bone-clad Kobold on his left "You must have suffered some amount of dysentery in your youth."
Going back to the business of the cave, max strokes his chin thoughtfully.
""Hrm... we should set to the side so we are not caught between-"
He's interrupted by the Kobold on his right, who not only parrots what he just said, but continues on, seeming to have lifted the thoughts directly from Maxwell's skull. Max stares daggers into the back of His.
Maxwell finds himself very at odds, with no route that wouldn't lead to an embarrassing social faux pas. On one hand, he could confront Fal, but since the creature was ignorant to the fact that Maxwell was even speaking, would only serve to further embarrass him.
