"Alright gang, it looks like old man Jenkins is gathering ingredients for some dark ritual again."
I have an idea for a Cypher game about a mash up of Scooby Doo, and similar shows, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. At this point it is just an interest check. I am thinking of four people and one strange mascot. The mascot will have their own set of foci to draw from. I have not yet created the Campaign sheet. I am open to suggestions about ways to tweek the details, such as number of players. I am also looking for suggestions for a name. Cyphers will likely be subtle only. The strange special gear will all be Artifacts.

I would be interested in a Cypher System game if you'ed be willing to run. An Adept or Explorer would be a good choice for me.
I am debating with banning adept, but allowing the magic flavor. Thus, you could start with magic, but only as a dabbler.
Alright, there definitely seems to be interest. I should have the Worksheet and any other rules finalized by Monday at the latest. I would love suggestions for the name of your group.

RECRUITMENT
Players: 4 people for the gang, plus one mascot.
Length: Two weeks, unless there is a drop off of new applicants, or there seems to be a large demand to start early.
Character Creation: See rules in Campaign tab. Please note that Mascot foci are not list as of posting this.
Posting Expectations: At least once a day during the week, only once needed during the weekend. More is encouraged. Please note that I will have little access to the internet Monday, Thursday, and some Fridays during the middle of the day. I will be attending Gen Con, but will have internet access during the Morning and Evening.
Please feel free to ask me any questions.
EDIT: This is the most fitting version of Scooby Doo.
Tanya Barnett |
Ok well here is my character, Tanya Barnett. She is a Guarded Adept who Commands Mental Powers. In short she is a Psychic paranormal investigator with strong Romani heritage as a source of her ablities. Of course this works out after all as Gypsies in Scooby Do tend to have odd powers and in the 13th Ghosts of Scooby Do, you've got people with outright magical powers. Of course Tayna is rather subtle with her abilities although she can use her powers offensively if needs be.
Now the question is, what kind of Scooby Gang are we going with? Teenage investigators or Adult Paranormal Investigators as both are viable in the continuity of the series.

I have several ideas bubbling around in my head... one of the ones I have for a mascot would require GM okey dokey.
Nohwear - what do you think about Resides in Silicon from The Strange: In Translation for a robot/droid/drone?
Not a deal breaker, especially if you don't have the source, as I have several other ideas.

There is actually an existing focus in a strange supplement that works excellent for a drone character. It is called "Resides in Silicon" where you are actually a floating drone character. Good choice GM.
As for my Cyphers:
1d6 ⇒ 5 and 1d100 ⇒ 3
Reflex enhancer level: 1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 1 and 1d100 ⇒ 68
Temporal viewer level: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
1d6 ⇒ 4 and 1d100 ⇒ 39
Density level: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Looks like the one issue I'll have making a bird is coming up with a way to have flight, since Cypher (rightly) makes it quite difficult for characters to fly. Of course, I only have the base Cypher rulebook and the Numenara rulebook, so there could be something in one of the others that would help.
But if my raven mascot gets chosen, we should definitely call our group "Nevermore To Be A Mystery". Because it rhymes *and* is a literary reference. :D
Almonihah |
EDIT: I feel silly, I just now got the rhyme.
It's a bit off for being a proper couplet. It just needs another syllable in the second half. :D
I haven't had time today to think up my raven racial descriptor properly, but it'll probably be something along the lines of this:
-some points Might pool, Might disability
+some points Speed pool, asset on Speed defense from small size
No equipment (because... well, what equipment is a raven going to have?)
Flight
Using cyphers will probably take some creativity. :D
Almonihah |
Okay, putting some numbers and flavor to it:
Raven descriptor:
A Little Wimpy: As a small bird, you're not particularly strong or tough. You get -3 to your Might pool.
Everything's Harder When You're Small: It really is. Increase the difficulty of all Might checks by one step.
Swift Wings: You're a quick little bird. You get +3 to your Speed pool.
Small Target: Most people aren't used to aiming at a raven. You have an asset on all Speed Defense tasks
You Can Fly! You are a bird, after all. Your normal movement is by flight.
No Hands: You'd be surprised what you can pull off with a beak and talons, but they're not as good as hands. This also means you have no use for equipment, and thus do not have any.
Almonihah |
It's a pretty slight rhyme, I have to admit. Though I was thinking I could make the syllable count work out by using the old poet's trick of smashing syllables together:
Ne'ermore to be
A Mystery
Anyway, I'll probably have my raven this evening. Though the problem is, if I've counted right, that will leave us with two mascot submissions and less than four human submissions.
Pam Hyle |
Pam Hyle - Inquisitive Speaker who Would Rather be Reading
Pam is fascinated by true crime, forensics and horror literature. She saved up her allowance in high school and cobbled together a poor girl's evidence collection kit, including finger prints, a phenolphthalien blood test kit and an impression kit. Her senior science project on forensics was sufficient to gain the attention of several local colleges, and land her a pretty good scholarship to a private school.
Pam is completely absorbed with horror literature, forensics, her schooling and field hockey, but has heard some odd rumors about cattle mutilations the next town over and is interested in going to check it out and see if she can out-think the small town police.
GM Hands of Fate |
I am running 2 Numenera games and a The Strange game on myth-weavers.com. There are three other games starting up there; Star Trek, Supers and A modern fantasy game. I think it will ge more popular once the organized play rules come out.
Considering I never heard of it before February, and now it is my game of choice, might take some time to build a following.
