"All this time spent searching for the beast and once we've got the opportunity to face it, we hide atop some...machans. I know the tiger could easily pounce on us if we just stand in the clearing and all, yet still..." mumbles Darathys to Beckett as he waits for the beast to appear.
Anticipating the tiger's appearance, Darathys keeps a firm grip on a javelin as he waits for the beast to pop up.

The Baron immediately recognizes the voice as that of the count. "Something is off, he never refers to me that way. I sense this is some sort of trap, be on guard!"

Beckett fires an arrow across the clearing from his machan, a perfect shot that imbeds deep in the creature's flesh. Ninn pulls out a purple gem, bathing the area in light, and you can now clearly see the creature. It has the head of a badger with a wide mouth full of sharp ridges of bone instead of teeth. The hooves are that of a stag, yet it has the haunches and tail of a tiger. As Ninn retrieves the stone from her pack however, the 'tiger' takes the opportunity to sink It sinks its bony mouth into the her leg, dragging her to the ground in the process. With little room to manuever, the Baron Rudyahm drops his musket and pulls a kukri out of its sheath on his hip, slashing at the creature, drawing a spurt of blood. In return, it tears flesh from his arm, knocking him off balance in the process.

Darius fires a bolt from his crossbow, which hits the creature square in the shoulder, before jumping out of his machan. Darathys throws a javelin but the distance is too great and it lands at the foot of the Baron's tree. Riceak asks for Shelyn to aid Beckett, who jumps out of the tree and then calls on his divine powers to heal the party. Ninn does a bit of her own healing, tapping the Baron with a wand, though the crocotta bites her in the process. Bomande again lashes out with his blade, but can't quite connect, though the beast tears another chunk of flesh off him.

Darius calls on the magic powers of a wand to grant him extra speed as he and Darathys rush towards the Baron's machan. Riceak tries to do the same, but his foot gets tangled in the rope ladder as he climbs down. Beckett fires off another arrow which strikes the creature square in the ribs. Ninn tries to protect the Baron, healing him and distracting the crocotta so he can return to his feet. It works, and he uses the opportunity to stand up and quickly climb down the ladder, away from the cramped machan. The beast gives chase though, scampering down the tree, and again tearing into the Baron and slamming him to the ground.

The AoO didn't even cross my mind when I posted that. I blame the lack of sleep.
As the crocotta tries to scamper down the tree after the Baron, Ninn takes the opportunity to land a swift kick to the creature, hitting it right on the spine and breaking it's back.
Out of combat!
Baron Rudyahm looks to be in decent shape, considering the creature was able to bite of a few sizeable chunks of flesh. "I thank you, friends. If it weren't for you being here, that...thing certainly would have had me for dinner." He take a few minutes to inspect the corpse. "Clearly this is the creature that wiped out the my previous expedition. I was obviously quite wrong in thinking it was a tiger. But this scar here," he points to the left flank, "is right where I shot it five years ago. Though I was not able to manage the killing blow, I still consider this hunt a success. And none of it would have been possible without you. You have my gratitude, and for that, I will guide you to the temple that your Society seeks."
You have the option to continue straight to the temple, rest here for the night and leave in the morning, or rendezvous with the Count and continue with the rest of the hunting party as well.
Sir Ninn de Hawtey |
"Baron Rudyahm, I beg your parole. It was wrong of me to steal your kill, especially after you had fought so valiantly. I merely intended to stun the creature and make safe your repositioning maneuver, but I am a poor paladin, and an even poorer monk."
"I failed to maintain unity of thought and deed. Though my intent was good, my deed has hurt my sworn companion. I have dishonored myself in your eyes, and seek your forgiveness. Please, set me some quest, that I might regain my honor."
Beckett Lorovox |
"Fear not, young brother," hoping the noble monk will rise, "for things could have been far worse, . . . and I feel tha' there will be plenty of opportunity fur ya to prove you bravery and might to come."
"Let us all take a moment to consider what could have been. Not only to ourselves, but what danger this "tiger" might have done ta anyone else tha' happened to stumble upon it's path." he says, as he begins to set a fire pit and craft a pit to cook upon.
"The natural world is a dangerous place, af'er all. A lesson that's easy to forget when we look upon the grand monuments of the various cities of humanoids. You know, before now, I'd only heard stories of these creatures. And now, we the salt of the earth, dine on crocotta steaks."
"But we won. The good Baron got his revenge, after so many years. We survived. And the wilds are that much safer for it. We,. . . all of us, should be please. It was a clean kill."
GM Turmoil |
You rest the rest of the night and get a late start the next day. As agreed upon, Baron Rudyahm leads the party to the Urapangi Lowlands to the location of the temple. A large freshwater swamp dominates the Lowlands, making travel through the region difficult.
The temple is dedicated to Ragdya, a Vudran god of monkeys. The site is almost completely overgrown by vegetation, and only bits and pieces of its brown sandstone exterior are visible from the outside. The weight of the massive roof and the passage of centuries have caused the ceiling to collapse near the building’s center. The interior is dimly lit by light
pouring in from through the encrusted vegetation.
The Baron shakes all of your hands, showing his gratitude for saving his life. "I thank you for accompanying me on my hunt, and as promised, I have shown you the way here. But I will not venture any further with you, I do not trust this place, and I am much too old to be out exploring such a temple. I will wait nearby in the jungle for your return, do not worry about me."
Riceak Hawklight |
The cleric thanks the Lord for his company and asks Shelyn's blessings upon him and his group.
Beckett Lorovox |
I'm honestly okay either way, so I'll go with what the rest of the group prefers.
Thanking the Baron for his aid and directions, Mr. Lorovox takes a good look around before entering, commenting on the irony of the place being dedicated to Ragdya after our own little monkey encounter and hoping that this means Ragdya isn't going to be angry with us entering the temple.

"Thank you, Baron. It was a good hunt. Now, to the temple lads" Darathys is eager to explore the site and is the first one to enter it.
Darius Leroung |
Before entering the ruin, Darius will cast Longstrider on himself. He gives Ariaan the command to "stay" outside.
Darius chuckles at Darathys's impulsiveness. "The ruin isn't going anywhere, Darathys. Be careful, or you might be the first to discover a pit trap!" He laughs.
Darius goes over his inventory and readies a journal, inkpens, measuring cords, pitons, and a curious, obviously magical twelve inch iron bar (a Traveler's Anytool, from a Chronicle).
"Hopefully the jungle has kept this place isolated enough that we're the first to lay eyes on it."
