Hello!
I will be flying out on Thursday, Oct' 5 (tomorrow) and then back on Monday, Oct' 9, and will be out in the Romanian countryside in between those dates.
I've arranged to have Internet access, so I should be able to post a couple times a day.
But I am giving this warning, so, in case I go dark, it'll be because something went wrong, so just bot me for those days if it happens.

Everybody's PC info updated?

I've finished my slides. Need some info from each of you:
1. Player name (as you'd like it to appear on your chronicle sheet).
2. PFS # for your PC.
3. Day Job roll.
4. PC level when we start.

@Honey: PC and animal companion will each have his or her own initiative roll. If you don't object, I can just automatically delay the better initiative roll until the worse one. Also, when you have a spare moment, can you please create a tagline for your PC?

Makes life a little easier for the GM.

Looking forward to starting first thing Friday.

Hello. I moved Ptehp to be second in a single file behind Gweld, if you don't mind. Gweld's AC is a little bit higher when under the effects of a Mutagen, he's sometimes winning initiative and likes to charge, as well as he'll probably be on the constant lookout for traps.

PaperDrake,

You're right, in a combat situation. However, at present we're out-of-combat, so my understanding is that Zavubak is good-to-go.
I double-checked the rules. Using Skills and Taking 10 and Taking 20.

I don't presume to know all the rules in a game published by a company that adds several new source materials each month, and I welcome being corrected when I'm wrong.

If you can point me to the source of your understanding, I'm happy to take a look.

The "if" is the trigger, the "then" is the action.
Then make your rolls for each.
I'll trust the players' integrity until I have a good reason to feel that trust has been misplaced. The cynical alternative is a game I'd rather not play.

As Ptehp cracks his whip, the dragon strikes again
Dragon's Bite AoO

Just to make sure, that is a normal attack or an AoO?

Because what I've read in the FAQs is that using the Scorpion whip within 5ft. does not provoke (and it threatens) since it is being used as a Light (Performance) Weapon.
It provokes when used as a Whip at 10 or 15 feet (and does not threaten).

And I thought Fervor is an Su which does not provoke.

Just to know how to adapt if those do provoke.

Grand Lodge

Curse of the Crimson Throne | Gallows of Madness

The AoO was for the attack with the whip.
I believe you regarding the scorpion whip, but can you provide me a link to FAQ entry you’re citing? Makes my life a lot easier when I’m on the road.

Sorry to cause problems...
Here's the link and the text from the FAQ @ that link.

Link

FAQ:
Scorpion Whips: How do scorpion whips work? There are several published sources of scorpion whips, and they seem inconsistent.
Change the last sentence in the Ultimate Combat scorpion whip's description to say "If you are proficient with both scorpion whips and whips, you can use a scorpion whip in either the normal way, as a typical light performance weapon, or as a whip. When you use a scorpion whip as a whip, it is otherwise equivalent to a whip, but it deals lethal damage and can harm creatures regardless of their armor bonus." This change will be reflected in future errata.

What this means is that the scorpion whip is normally a light performance weapon with no other special weapon features, but that someone with both proficiencies can also use it as a whip, in which case it acts precisely like a whip in all ways (one-handed weapon, attack out to 15 feet, provoke an attack of opportunity, can use the Whip Mastery feats, etc) except that it deals lethal damage and can harm creatures regardless of their armor bonus.

posted May 2015 | back to top

I have proficiency with the Scorpion Whip as Warpriest (favored weapon of Goddess Selket) and with Whips as the alternate trait (switching out Orcish Weapon Familiarity for City Raised) that gives prof' in longswords and whips.

Basically, for Ptehp: he threatens 1 sq. around and can attack 1 sq. around w/o provoking (Scorp' Whip) and can attack @ 10 & 15 ft. (Whip-like) but provokes (and he does not threaten @ 10 & 15 ft).

NOTE (that does not concern Ptehp but just FYI): you could use Weapon Finesse for the Scorp' Whip part (light weapon) and the Whip part (Finesse-able 1 Hand Weapon) to attack (and thus have Dex' to Dam' as a U-Rogue for example) ; but cannot use Power Attack for for the Scorp' Whip part (but could for the Whip part)

@Gweld: What makes Piranha Strike work with a Longsword?

Grand Lodge

Curse of the Crimson Throne | Gallows of Madness

Gweld's build makes sense to me.

Champion's Finesse
At 1st level, a daring champion gains the benefits of the Weapon Finesse feat with light or one-handed piercing melee weapons, and he can use Charisma in place of Intelligence for the purpose of combat feats prerequisites. A daring champion also counts as having the Weapon Finesse feat for the purpose of meeting feat requirements.

1st Level Feat: Weapon Focus (longsword)

Bonus Human Feat: Slashing Grace (longsword) choose one kind of light or one-handed slashing weapon (such as the longsword). When wielding your chosen weapon one-handed, you can treat it as a one-handed piercing melee weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a swashbuckler's or a duelist's precise strike), and you can add your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to that weapon's damage. The weapon must be one appropriate for your size. You do not gain this benefit while fighting with two weapons or using flurry of blows, or any time another hand is otherwise occupied.

Feat Piranha Strike Prerequisites: Weapon Finesse, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: When wielding a light weapon, you can choose to take a -1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (-50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and for every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by -1 and the bonus on damage rolls increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before the attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage. This feat cannot be used in conjunction with the Power Attack feat.

Slashing grace makes it one-handed piercing and adds Dex to damage. To have Slashing Grace, I have Weapon Focus with longsword, and instead of Weapon Finesse I have Champion's Finesse from Daring Champion archetype that explicitly counts as it for prereques, and also grants the benefits of Weapon Finesse, which is Dex to attack, to one-handed piercing, which is a longsword.

I understand all that, and was not asking about it, since it makes sense and follows the rules and all...
My question was simply: how do you get Piranha Strike with a Longsword?
Other than Effortless Lace (which is not PFS) I do not see how the Longsword can become a Light weapon, and would be happy to know how if there is a way.
It's just that, as you both just posted: "Slashing grace makes it one-handed piercing" and "when wielding a light weapon" you get Piranha Strike...

Jet lag, Guiness, and Jameson are clouding my brain here on the Emerald Isle. I apologize for not catching the leap in logic, when I first reviewed Gweld's build.

So, Gweld how would you like to proceed for this scenario? The simplest solution for now would be to just drop the Piranha Strike penalty on your attacks and bonus on your damage.

That's fine, Ptehp. Would hate to go with playing it wrong for long. The build is still legal, just not working. I now need to spend 10 Prestige for two retrains, but will replace the Piranha Strike with Power Attack without issue. That should give the same overall result.

GM Lorenzo, yes, let us just proceed with me not using the Feat.

I'm starting to have a lot of questions to how this fight plays out as well. I hate to be the one complaining about the rules, but it seems like PbP's slow format brings it out of me.

- You can't 'ready' out of combat. Even if you could, if you use readied action, you move in initiative order to be in front of whoever provoked your readied action.

- If Yellow charged, he couldn't choose which square to end up in. He moved to the one directly up from Gweld to give himself and Red the flank, while the closest one was the diagonal up-and-right, and when charging you must go the shortest path.

- Gweld somehow lost 15hp this round, while Yellow missed, Red attacked for 9 and tried to confirm with a total attack roll of 18, which doesn't confirm against him.

-Ptehp was the one who said he was going to open the door.

If I were paranoid, which I am, I'd start thinking that somebody's out to get Gweld specifically.

I think the terminology Lorenzo used is what is throwing people off. The fletchlings likely didn't "ready" outside of combat. I'd bet my last gold piece that he's simply following their Before Combat tactics (which is exactly what he should do) and that it must have said something along the lines of them ambushing you if they knew of your presence, which the fletchlings did. In essence, it's a surprise round because they're aware of you're presence and you are not aware of theirs until after you've been shot by them.

No one's out to get you, Gweld. Lorenzo is one of the fairest GMs on these boards.

And I think I said we should move to open the door, but waited, because Ptehp was asked to move back from the front row in the party-order, so I did not want to change that order by moving up ahead (since I felt that would be like going against what we had decided on).
But I don't mind taking point - or not.
Just let's decide how we do things (I imagine that since Gweld is in first spot on 1 sq. line, means that it was considered Gweld opened the door).
And I am saying all this without any kind of problems or animosity or whatever: I'm fine going first, or 2nd, or even 3rd (the whip's reach makes it less of a problem).

Well, I'd hate to sound like I carry any animosity as well. And I hate to be the one who complains on how the game goes, since I'm also the one who got his build wrong for a couple of weeks.

Curse of the Crimson Throne | Gallows of Madness

We're in the middle of what's left of Hurricane Ophelia. We might lose power shortly, and no one knows for how long. I will continue to post as long as it's possible. If I lose connectivity, I'll post again as soon as we get it back.

We're in The G Hotel in Galway. There are worse places to be in a hurricane.

We're scheduled to leave Ireland and return to Seattle on Thursday.
