At Warren's direction, the four of you backtrack downstairs, go across to the west side of the Great Hall, and find a way into the front entryway where the other half of the rubble is. At the bottom of the pile you see what looks to be an unconscious male aasimar.

The man matches the description of Garreth, the town healer and buyer of the rock you were looking for. He is terribly injured, covered in blood and bruises. One of his legs is partially buried in rubble, and the corresponding foot is pointing a direction it shouldn't be capable of. He seems unnaturally emaciated, like his life energy has been partially drained.

For all that, he seems to still be alive, but just barely. He wears fine chain armor, as well as a necklace bearing a holy symbol of Sarenrae (goddess of healing, redemption, and the dawn). A scimitar (Sarenrae's favored weapon) lies on the floor near Garreth's limp hand, its edge thoroughly bloodied.

Well...there's our necromancer. Guess Warren was wrong all this time eh... Garnult quips as he moves forward to heal the man Heal Skill: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

In a look of surprise Warren mutters, "Warren?!?!? I would of thought he'd blame the lawyer!"

Warren moves to strike the man if needed with his weapon. "Don't forget what we found upstairs in his lair. Those weren't the trappings of Sarenrae but her rival Urgotha."

The man's eyes slowly open as he regains consciousness. Surveying his predicament, he raises one eyebrow when he sees Garnult's holy symbol.

"Noble cleric of the Forgefather, prove yourself," he says without stirring from the ground. "Channel the positive energy of your god through that holy symbol."

Garnult scoffs Prove meself? You prove yerself first. I'm the one what woke you up!

"Well, I wasn't exactly awake to see who woke me..." he begins, but then sighs and closes his eyes. "Okay, I think I've still got one of these in me."

The symbol of Sarenrae glows for a moment, and you all feel a healing warmth pass through you.

Channel to heal living: 1d6 ⇒ 3

You see his wounds improve a bit, and Garnult in particular easily recognizes this as channeled positive energy.

"Alright, satisfied?" Garreth asks. "Now it's your turn. And remember, even the most wicked of clerics can still prepare healing spells, so I need to see some positive energy flowing before I know I can trust you."

Garreth looks confused and leery at being called an elf, but once he sees the effects of the wave of healing energy, he seems to relax a bit.

"Thank the Dawnflower," he says, then nods to Garnult and adds, "As well as the Forgefather."

Surveying the group, he begins to speak: "Thank you for assisting me. My name is Garreth. Who might you be, and what are you doing this deep into the ruins? It's not safe—" Suddenly, he gets a look like he just remembered something awful.

"Wait, the gravespawn! I wasn't able to kill them all, did you see any undead creatures on your way here? I think there were three that attacked me that I wasn't able to kill yet. They haven't escaped into the village, have they?!"

He speaks rapidly, with panic spreading over his face as he struggles to pull his mangled leg out of the rubble so he can stand.

Also, you guys have explored all the relevant parts of the ruins. There's technically a couple of unexplored rooms on the far western side, but they don't matter.

Yeh, we rekilled yer damned "gravespawn". I calls em skeletons but... Garnult gives a shrug that suggests he thinks the "elf" might have suffered some brain contusions.

What were ya doin with that stone? We thought ya was a necromancer because you bought one.

The injured man breathes a sigh of relief at hearing that the undead have been dealt with, but his eyes go wide at your mention of the stone.

"You mean the one I bought in Zunberg?" he asks. How did you know about that? I only just got back last night! Unless..."

He pauses a moment, seeming pensive and worried.

"Have you found necromantic stones recently yourself?"

At the mention of the shrine Garnult grumbles Yeah? What about that?

Garreth gives you all a quizzical look. "You picked the locks? Why? I had those doors shut for everyone's safety." He pauses to pull his mangled leg free of the rubble, wincing a bit as a he does so, then attempts to use his scimitar as a cane to help him stand.

After a deep sigh, he continues. "Okay, it sounds like there's some confusion. Since it seems nobody's in immediate danger, I'll explain. I found these ruins years ago. As you've discovered, it was originally home to some Urgathoans," Garreth says, pausing to spit on the ground. "They've been gone for centuries, so I cleaned out enough space to set up a sort of clinic and laboratory so I could take care of the people in the village. I knew there could be hazards, so I locked up everything I wasn't using and put up signs."

He wobbles a bit, takes a deep breath, and then resumes speaking. "A few days ago, something fell from the sky and landed in the lake. Given this village had already barely survived one plague due to contaminated water, I investigated by dredging up the fallen object. It was a dark rock, ordinary-looking, but painful to touch. Basic divinations revealed powerful necromantic magic, but no details. I couldn't find anything helpful in my collection of books, so I travelled to Zunberg for further research. While there, I discovered—and purchased—another nearly identical item, which I brought back along with a few books for further study."

At this point he lowers his head, as though in shame. "I let my curiosity get the better of me. Trying to discover the nature of a pair of necromantic artifacts, and knowing I was in an Urgathoan ruin, I went looking for clues. Problem is, the first room I explored was full of dead bodies on beds, and they started animating all on their own. I'm guessing it has to do with proximity to the stones. They all attacked me, and although I destroyed most of them, I'm not much of a fighter. I stalled two of them behind a door and thought I had a moment to catch my breath, but then another came through a hole in the wall. While fighting it, the floor collapsed, and that's the last thing I remember."

Tolbert:
You're confident that he's being completely honest and genuine.

Oh, also, go ahead and level up. Normally I'd make it an overnight thing (in-game), but there's no more encounters before then and the weekend is a good time for leveling. Don't forget that juicy 4th-level stat bump!

Male Fighter 4| AC 20 T 13 FF 17 | HP 53/53 | F +7 R +4 W +6; +1 v Fear| Init +3 | Perc +7

"We've encountered three of these stones. They are very powerful necromantic items. The thieves guild in Zunberg has sold two of them. One to you one to us. Hence us following after you to make sure it wasn't put to bad use. We found one our way here. I think these should definitely be kept out of graveyards." Warren then chuckles at the end.

"Oh dear," he says, "That's troubling, especially considering... Well, first let me..." he pauses and casts a couple of spells, and some of the color comes back to his skin and his features seem less emaciated. "Now then, have a look at this."

Reaching into a satchel, he carefully removes a cloth-wrapped item, which he opens to reveal one of the necromantic stones, this one oblong, like two fists side by side. "Look carefully," he says, and you notice a hairline fracture running roughly across the middle.

"The two stones I acquired, when brought near each other, snapped together like pieces of a puzzle. I don't think these are individual items we've been finding, but fragments of a whole."

Spells and Consumables Dwarf Cleric 6 | Init -1 | HP 59 | AC 22 (20) |PP 13 ||

Wouldn't it be dangerous to combine them then, ya know...adding to it and all? Garnult says

Female Human Archaeologist 4 | Init +2 | HP 28/35 | AC 19, T 12, FF 17 | Fort +4, Ref +7, Will +4 | CMB +7, CMD 19 | Perc +8, SensMtv +5

"Do the attached fragments reveal anything? Is there any writing?"

Looking at Garnult, Garreth shakes his head. "I didn't try to combine them," he says, "I laid them both down on my workbench so I could dig a book out of my backpack, and suddenly they snapped together like a pair of magnets. Once united, I couldn't get them apart again."

The man then turns to Cassidy. "Good thought, but no writing seems apparent. However," he continues, turning the object in his hand, "look at this end: there's a bit of a smooth patch. I couldn't figure out what it was at first, but now I'm thinking it's one of the outer pieces of the object."

Garreth puts the stone away again so he can use both hands to support himself on his sword, then asks you to come with him to his laboratory. Once there, he retrieves a proper crutch from underneath one of the workbenches, then pulls a document from the fallen bookcase. Spreading it over a workbench, you see that it's a map of this region.

Garreth places a pin in the nearby lake and says, "This is where one of these stones fell." He then places another pin in Zunberg and adds, "This is where the other of these two stones fell. Now, I've got a bad feeling: where did the rest of the stones you've encountered fall?"

Pointing out the locations (Woodhaven, the mayor's estate, and the forest), Garreth places pins there as well.

"Do you see what I see?" he asks. Looking at the arrangement of pins, you do see it: the impact sites form the beginnings of a semicircle. From Woodhaven, an imaginary line drawn from site to site would curve up and to the right, passing through Zunberg, cresting in the forest, and beginning to come down again at the lake.

"Do you realize what this likely means?"

"Are you thinking more fragments fell in areas that would complete the circle. That's an awfully contrived arrangement."

"Well I'm not saying a perfect ring or anything. Let me put it this way: right before one of these chunks fell into the lake, I heard a sound in the distance like a clap of thunder. Did you? I'm guessing you did, and my theory is that whatever it is that these are pieces of was—for whatever reason—detonated in the air, and the fragments came raining down."

Garreth pauses a moment as you all recollect that afternoon, then continues. "If I'm right, then that means there are a lot more of these pieces out there. And that sounds like trouble."

Male Fighter 4| AC 20 T 13 FF 17 | HP 53/53 | F +7 R +4 W +6; +1 v Fear| Init +3 | Perc +7

Warren lets Garnult's insult slide and says, "I agree with you. It does look like they are forming a circle and the rest need to be found before they cause more problems. I wonder if there are any inside the circle. I did hear a clap of thunder before these stones fell."

Female Human Archaeologist 4 | Init +2 | HP 28/35 | AC 19, T 12, FF 17 | Fort +4, Ref +7, Will +4 | CMB +7, CMD 19 | Perc +8, SensMtv +5

"Oh dear this isn't good.

I do wonder what the original object was and what would happen if the pieces were rejoined."

"I don't know what would happen if they were all put together," he says to Cassidy, "But I'm also not excited about the idea of them being scattered all over the countryside to be claimed by anyone."

Garreth goes quiet for a moment, seeming deep in thought. Presently, he speaks:

"The fragments must be found, or this whole land could be thrown into chaos. I can't go myself, as this village needs me. Besides that, I don't think this leg will ever be the same, and I'm really more of a thinker than a fighter or an adventurer. However, if the four of you are going to go after the stones, I will aid you in whatever way I am able. What say you?"

He then looks at Tolbert, "And I don't want to hear any mention of remuneration or any other fancy or plain words meaning you are expecting payment!"

He then asks, "The question is what do we do with the pieces once we get them."

"Well, the botany business isn't going anywhere, and I sure not exploring for rare plants on my own, knowing these objects are out there.

But I agree with Warren. We need to figure out what to do with these stones once we find them. We can't carry them all with us. Perhaps we can store them safely somewhere or figure out a way to effectively destroy them." Than muttering to herself, Cassidy says "I wonder if we can find a silver sword imbibed with basilisk venom..."

Hey, no world-crossing! ;)

"Excellent!" Garreth says. "Now, let's see: I've got a bit of magical gear that will better serve the world in your hands than mine. Here..."

He begins handing off gear, identifying each item as he goes.

Gear includes a Ring of Protection +1, a Cloak of Resistance +1, a +2 WIS headband, and a set of +1 elven chain armor.

"I know it looks like a lot, but I made most of it myself. Call it a hobby. Speaking of which, I would happily support you with ongoing crafting work, keeping your gear up to snuff over the course of your coming ordeal. In fact, I see you have what looks like an adamantine scythe blade there. (From the armory earlier.) It's not too different of a shape from your sword, Cassidy; I could probably finish a conversion by nightfall. Or," he says, turning to Warren, "With a bit more time, I could fashion it into something like what you're using. Which would you prefer?"

"Thank you very much Garreth. That scythe blade would make an excellent sword for either of us. I would not mind having an adamantine weapon but I do believe in ladies first if you would like an adamantine sword, Cassidy. I do need to pick up a bludgeoning weapon though if we are going to run into more skeletons.

As for the other items, I think the armor would go great on Cassidy and the headband for Garnult. Tolbert would you prefer the ring or the cloak?"

"No objections to you having the ring, Warren. I think I would like to have an adamantine weapon, and I would like the armor too. I already have a cloak."

"Right then, I'll have the blade repurposed into a katana before you leave in the morning," Garreth says happily. "First, though, I should probably go out to the village and introduce you all; folks will be alarmed when they see me so injured, and I want to preemptively make sure they know you're on our side."

Garreth leads you all back out of the ruins and into the village. As you approach, several people notice you and react loudly to Garreth's appearance, seemingly ready to punch your lights out or die trying. Garreth quickly talks them down, explaining that you all saved his life and that it's a miracle you showed up when you did. Wanna guess what would have happened if you hadn't taken the shortcut through the woods? ;)

The villagers' ire turns to relief and gratitude, and before long you're being offered fresh pies and "the best home cookin' you ever dun had". Garreth explains that you'll be leaving in the morning for something very important (though he leaves out the gruesome details), and that in the meantime he'll be working to help you get ready. The old man you met on the way into town is put in charge of coordinating sleeping arrangements and assembling supplies for your journey.

@Garnult - Though there are no dwarves or proper smithies in the village, Garreth happily offers his copy of "Dwarven Metalworking Basics," which he says he's already memorized. He apologizes for the notes in the margins (written in celestial), but the book itself is in dwarven, and even has a chapter titled "When All You Have is a Warhammer" for maintenance on the road. That's enough to let you fit your armor as an ongoing project. :)
