5e 101 for OSW
So now that OSW has worked out how to cast spells in 5e, and how weapons work, and skills...let's move onto to rests and healing.
Looking at the information HERE
After a short rest, I can use (spend) up to 3 HD (as a 3rd level character). This gives me my HD dice + Con as healing.
After a long rest, I regain ALL my hit points and a number of spent HD, equal to half my level.
Is that right?
And do I get all my spells back after a long rest?
All of that sounds correct, including regaining all expended spell slots after a long rest.
Just want to try and help with the visualization of the "cubic-ness" of this stone tunnel.
Imagine you had like a bajillion d6's. Imagine that they range in size from "barely bigger than a grain of sand" to a couple of feet across (and perhaps larger, later on).
Now, imagine that you could make them all weightless (so you can arrange them however you like in space) and ethereal (so they can overlap with each other). Then you arrange them to form a structure, but do so rather haphazardly (not bothering to line up edges or have the cubes all rotated the same, etc). Then you turn them all solid again.
The result of that would look kind of like what you're encountering here. Hopefully that's at least somewhat "visualize-able".
Female Elf (Water) Druid 4 | HP 27/27 | AC 15 | Init +3 | Scimitar +5 [1d6], Spear +1 [1d6/1d8] | Spd 30ft | Per: +5 | SAVES: Str +0/Dex +3/Con +1/Int +2/Wis +5/Cha +2 | Spell save DC: 13 | Spell Atk Mod: +5.
Woah....sounds....edgy. ;P Love the sense of all those planes jutting everywhere. Who would/could make such a thing? ;)
Female Halfling Copper Draconic Sorcerer 4 | HP 27/30| AC 16 | Saves: Str+0, Dex+3, Con+4, Int+0, Wis+0, Cha+6 | PasPercpt10 | Skills: Arcana+2, Deception+6, Persuasion+6, SleightofHand+5 | Init.+3 | SpellAttack+6 | SpellSave14
That does sound interesting! I wonder if that's a strange gnomish creation? Guess we will find out soon enough!
FYI, tomorrow is my 10th anniversary, so Jiggette and I are taking a long weekend out of town. I'm unlikely to be able to post much (if at all) during that time.
Half-Elf Rogue 1 | HP 16/16 | AC 16 | Fort +3, Ref +8, Will +6 | Perception +6
Half-Elf Rogue 1 | HP 16/16 | AC 16 | Fort +3, Ref +8, Will +6 | Perception +6
I'll use one HD during the short rest.
1d10 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Female Elf (Water) Druid 4 | HP 27/27 | AC 15 | Init +3 | Scimitar +5 [1d6], Spear +1 [1d6/1d8] | Spd 30ft | Per: +5 | SAVES: Str +0/Dex +3/Con +1/Int +2/Wis +5/Cha +2 | Spell save DC: 13 | Spell Atk Mod: +5.
I'll use two:
Short Rest: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 7
So I have up to my level to use for all short rests combined until a long rest?
i.e. next time I take a short rest I'll only have one available, and any more short rests will not provide any more HD worth of "rest healing"?
Yep, and when you eventually take a long rest, you'll recover spent HD equal to half your level (rounded up).
Female Elf (Water) Druid 4 | HP 27/27 | AC 15 | Init +3 | Scimitar +5 [1d6], Spear +1 [1d6/1d8] | Spd 30ft | Per: +5 | SAVES: Str +0/Dex +3/Con +1/Int +2/Wis +5/Cha +2 | Spell save DC: 13 | Spell Atk Mod: +5.
So a long rest gets me 3d8 + 3, and if I have spent any short rest HD I recover up to 2 HD of those to spend on the morrow.
And if I don't spend any I will always have 3 to use the next day.
Is that right?

Luckily I don't have to use a short rest yet. So I'll save mine.

A long rest completely refills your HP. It also refreshes your pool of hit dice, up to half your total.

Howdy everyone.
I'm leaving tomorrow with my family for a long vacation and won't return home until July 17. I will have intermittent Internet connection. Even so, I will have intermittent time for Pbp as the family does vacation things. So, please bot me as necessary.
cheers
PS My vote is the same as Naia. The player would go through the portal, but the character says that the player can go himself if he's so interested.

Finlogan can go first. Then maybe Wraith. Followed by the rest.

I'm going to be traveling out of state to visit family for the next week, starting by spending all day tomorrow driving. I'll probably find time to post here and there, but it may be erratic.

Aaaaand I'm back! To my surprise, I didn't get much chance to check on PbPs while I was out, but I'm working on them now.
Relatedly, prior to going on vacation I messaged Wraith to ask if she was still around, since she hadn't posted in two weeks. She hasn't replied, so unfortunately she's no longer part of the campaign.
That leaves a 4-PC party. As we advance toward the resolution of this arc, be thinking about what you'd prefer: to continue with a party of four; to recruit a new fifth PC; or to let the campaign resolve at the end of this arc. Feel free to discuss back and forth here in discussion.
In the meantime, I'm going to retcon Wraith out of the current fight, removing her opponent and moving Gwen over to where the rest of the action is.

I vote to resolve at the end of the arc.
Please continue to bot me as necessary, because combat posts are challenging on my phone.

*Jiggy - I've really liked the "New Isle" (Ila Nova - Avonali) and enjoyed the NPCs. The combats have been evocative and exciting, especially the homebrewed tweaks to crits involving blobs. Given the freeform nature of "strangers across the globe meeting to play" I have found too many PbP's hidebound or cleaving too close to RAW. So bravo for not only an entertaining but innovative game. I do hope I can play in another of your games in future. But likely not 5e, or if so, I really have to play not-a-druid. Thanks though for providing me a space to get to love nature/primal elves all over again...
Okay, we'll go ahead and wrap up at the end of the arc.
Thanks for the feedback, Oceanshieldwolf. If anyone else has feedback, I'd love to hear it (even negative feedback, as long as it's specific and clear enough that I can use it to improve).

I've had fun with the game. 5E rules still feel weird to me...I suppose I've played PF so long, that I may never change with that. But you were very patient with my ignorance, and I really appreciate that, while I was fumbling through things!

Woah. Wait. Wait. I didn't think resolve meant dissolving the game. I love this game! I only meant to resolve the recruiting for new players. I hope that may change some votes.
Cheers
PS. Chalk it up to me being on vacation and reading comprehension issues.

Oh. Ok, I'm staying in. I really do want to wrap my head around 5e.
It is really weird, the system is touted as being "simple", but perhaps like Teo, I'm finding PF gets in the way of my understanding. What is even more strange is that I've been playing since 1e/the early eighties, so by rights I should be au fait with different systems...

Alright. I'm back home. Had two coffees, so I want to apologize for my miscommunication. It was not intentional. I just misinterpreted "resolve" in relation to the issue of new players and campaign.
Please let me reiterate: I love this game! I'm truly enjoying learning the 5e rules. Jiggy is making the game mechanics comfortable and easy.
The story is very interesting even it feels a little linear at the tactical level. I feel that Jiggy will tailor the campaign to our characters. However, I think our characters are still not terribly cohesive yet as a team, which inhibits Jiggy's ability to tailor.

Female Elf (Water) Druid 4 | HP 27/27 | AC 15 | Init +3 | Scimitar +5 [1d6], Spear +1 [1d6/1d8] | Spd 30ft | Per: +5 | SAVES: Str +0/Dex +3/Con +1/Int +2/Wis +5/Cha +2 | Spell save DC: 13 | Spell Atk Mod: +5.
I feel Jiggy has tailored the game to some characters (i.e. mine) very well indeed. ;P
As for cohesion - we are disparate as a group - an elf prince, a wild nature elf emissary, a halfling sorceror and a showy warrioress (I'm guessing at this point Wraith is exeunt). There isn't really much to bring us together, which feels realistic to me. Tactically we aren't working as well as we might, nor are we particularly close on a personal level. Naia feels some kinship with Fin because a) he is, like her, an elf and b) he has made an effort to befriend her. Teo and Gwen are merely puzzling to her and she kinda lumps them in with "strange people I have met outside my homeland". She does however trust them to have her back in a fight, and though they are strange counts them currently as her "far-distant-cousins-by-proximity" - a form of pragmatic current-clan-by-convenience.
BWAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!
Oh man, what a miscommunication! Ha! Right then, we'll be continuing the campaign. So should I start a re-recruitment for a 5th party member, and hope to insert them between arcs? Is that what's wanted?

Without the gimp, Fin is ready to take point. Naia, ready?
By the way, if any of you have input on the candidates for our new party member, let me know. (Sorry Naia, but Timias withdrew.)
I'm currently leaning toward Crisischild's submission of a noble paladin, Alessandra. Could have some good connection with Fin (as a fellow noble) and Gwen (as a fellow heavily-armored fashion-nut). What do you all think?

Hey everyone. I look forward to playing with you all and taking 5e for a spin. Profile's almost done. I'll finish her backstory and stuff when I have a real keyboard. Had to do some unexpected traveling and I'm between laptops, but I should be able to answer any questions about Alex you might have.
I'm not a big fan of spells, so if left to my own devices I'll mostly use spell slots for smite or offensive buffs but if there's any particular spell anyone wants just let me know. Cure wounds, obviously.
Thanks for the opportunity, Jiggy.
